    Carpe DC Food Tours
    Maria P.

During a work trip to DC, we were set up with a walking food tour with Carpe DC Food Tours in DC's historic U-Street Corridor. I loved that it was something that I probably wouldn't have considered initially, but actually ended up really liking because of the historical background/significance and I was able to expand my palate while experiencing local food that I wouldn't have even thought of trying while in DC! We all met up at Ben's Chili Bowl for some of their famous half smokes, then headed down the street to Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant where we got down on some big combo platters paired with injera & honey wine. No great tour is complete without desserts and so we ended our evening at the trendy Tico DC restaurant for some margaritas and tres leches cakes. In between each stop we were given a history of the buildings, the city, the people etc.. and as someone who took history classes for all my electives in college, I really appreciated all the historical details. Overall, I enjoyed myself. It was my first time experiencing a progressive dinner type of tour and now I want to try more. It would have been nice to know how much food to expect in the beginning so that we could pace ourselves accordingly, but I may have just missed those details? I thought it was the perfect amount of food without going overboard and the tour gave me a deeper understanding of the city and how things came to be in that specific neighborhood. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the city.

we took the a shortened version of the U St food tour for a corporate event in the evening and it was such a fun experience. our guides were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and also culturally respectful. we were all pleasantly full, and there were plenty of accommodation for our dietary preferences.

This tour is a triple play: eating, exercise and information. Stefan and Mary are amazing story tellers. Some of the details that will stay with me are: * The founder of the 9:30 club gave R.E.M. their start, but refused to allow The Police to place because she didn't like the song, "Roxanne." * Phyllis E. Wheatley was a cool chick who loved to empower women. * DC alleys are so much more than shortcuts. There is a rich history behind them. * Etete is a term of endearment for the chef at Etete's, who cooks for Stevie Wonder when he is in town. * I want to meet the owner of Eatonville and hug him for Bus Boys & Poets, not to mention the fried green tomatoes at his other restaurant. I would suggest wearing comfortable shoes since there is walking in between restaurants. This tour is for anyone who enjoys the flavors of area restaurants and has an interest in DC's history. Being a DC resident, I was surprised at all the treasures that had been under my nose all this time. I appreciated having a vegetarian choice at every restaurant. My favorite item was the vegetarian chili at Ben's Next Door. I also really enjoyed the Ethiopian items at Etete. If a lentil is involved, I am there. If I ever took another tour, I would bring ziplock bags and a container to carry any leftovers I could not finish. I plan on revisiting all of the restaurants on the tour and taking advantage of all the really cool things that the U Street corridor has to offer. I give the tour guides two forks up!

My husband and I had a very positive experience with Carpe DC Food Tour. We felt the price was worth the whole experience. We were very full at the end of the tour and learned a great deal about the U. Street area. The tour started on time at 11:30 and ended right around 2:30 p.m. The pace of the tour was awesome. It began and ended near a metro station which was very convenient for us. I would highly recommend this tour to friends and family. I plan to book this tour again with a group of friends to share the experience. I recommend paying extra for the alcohol to taste some different/local beers/wine.

Although I've lived in DC for the past 8+ years, I've (shockingly) never been to the U Street/Shaw neighborhoods. The Carpe DC Food Tour was a great introduction to the area! I had so much fun exploring, learning the history and culture, and eating my way through this vibrant neighborhood. I loved how every aspect of the tour was very well thought out and planned. We began and ended the tour near 2 different Metro stations, which was super convenient. I also loved the VIP treatment that we received. At every establishment that we visited, we were seated and served our food immediately - awesome! :) The restaurants we visited on the tour, and the food / alcohol that we tasted, were: 1) Ben's Next Door - Half Smoke with chips + Chili Fries / DC Brau beer 2) Eatonville - Fried Green Tomato / District Common beer from Atlas Brew Works 3) Fast Gourmet - Beef empanadas 4) Etete - Vegetarian platter (to share) / Ethiopian honey wine 5) Mockingbird Hill - Surryano ham / Sherry 6) Bistro Bohem - Apple Strudel / Pilsner beer I also loved visiting the various sites that we stopped along the way, including the African American Civil War Memorial, Howard Theater, and the Duke Ellington statue. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and I definitely hope to come back to the neighborhood to do some more exploring myself. Thank you Mary and Stefan!

I took the food tour in the U street and Shaw neighborhood. The tour was well organized, engaging and educational. The food places that I got to try were perfect. Had a great time, it was well worth the money. I look forward to trying more food tours with CarpeDC.

U Street Food Tour: excellent food, nice variety, history of city as you walk to restaurants, great picture opportunities of outdoor murals, good to have guide in this part of town.

Hands down this was one of the BEST tours I've ever experienced. This was a food tour combined with a DC history session. It was much more than I expected. Stefan was a true professional and articulated the history in a nonbiased, very detailed manner. Stefan's passion exuded and kept me interested in every word. The tour started at Ben Chili's Bowl and we went to MatchBox, Habesha Market, Fast Gourmet, Glen's Garden Market and Calabash Tea & Tonic. I did individual reviews on each of these businesses and will not go into much detail now. I named them to give you an idea of the places we visited during the tour. This is a walking tour that allows you to see the beautiful artistic scene of U Street and feel the vibe of the current neighborhood. The tour would be great for families as well. If you're ever in the DC area, please take this tour. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Turned out to one of my favorite gifts as the tour opened our eyes to places we have not tried for one reason or another, plus got a little history and learned a couple of things. Terry was our Tour Guide, he was awesome and very knowledgeable of the area, the history and the food. It was a walking tour, Terry kept a pace that everyone could enjoy, did not rush, explained each stop in advance. He also seemed to have a great working relationship with each of the stops staff. We were seated quickly at each spot, and did not have to wait long for our food. Each spot served enough to give you a taste of the menu, and each stop was very good. The Mexican food was amazing, and one dish in particular will bring me back sooner than later. The crazy thing was most of the ingredients are not on my favorite list, but together- Bam !!! That was the cool thing about the tour, took us out of comfort zone, and exposed us to selections we normally would not have tried. Definitely recommend this tour, Terry was the best, and not just because he is a fellow Nats Fan- LOL. My wife who never does group photos did not hesitate when another participant said "Hey, group photo" she jumped right in. Just a nice relaxed way to explore new foods, when visiting for the first time or as a long time resident. Find new go to spots & possibly make new friends.

When we went to book online we had issues but called the number for assistance. The gentlemen we spoke with was SUPER helpful, patient and friendly! We met at the designated site and the drivers were all on time. Joel, our guide was phenomenal. I wish I could remember his name but I do remember he was Portuguese and said his name was Joel. He was extremely informative on so many facts about DC and the United States. He was also hilarious. He kept the tour very interesting by discussing so many details about all the monuments. It wasn't overwhelming where you couldn't enjoy the time either. I also didn't feel that he put any pressure on anyone as far as making it back on time. We ran a little late and he was so graceful about it. This is the one thing in DC we will definitely do again. Thanks Joel for making this experience fun and enjoyable!

I will give credit to the male guide for trying to hustle us in quickly while he passive aggressively informed us that the carts would be in tandem so being split up would be no big deal. My son is extremely shy and we were looking forward to spending quality time together on the tour that we paid almost $150 for. In my book, that was not acceptable especially without any forewarning that being split from my family member, no less a young teen ,may be the case. On top of the fact that every other person there were seated with their party. He said he would issue me a refund and it should go back in 2-5 business days. And then to put insult to injury asked my son if he was going to cry as we parted ways. How the heck is that an appropriate thing to say given that this was completely not his fault. Cancelling the tour we looked forward to for weeks was already disappointing enough but to make a remark like that instead of simply apologizing was insulting. Please retrain your guides in customer service and appropriate communication. This was not it. 1 week later, I received an email this morning saying they are not able to issue me a refund even after their own tour guide told me he would. THIS IS NO BETTER THAN A SCAM who doesn't care about people. What a joke and huge con artists.

My hubby and I really enjoyed it! We arrived 20 mins early and the guy checking us in said that the tour may start early, but looking at his check in list, it seemed like it was bc almost everyone had arrived. There were 2 separate grps & only 20 ppl in ea grp. At 1st I was bummed that the 6 stops weren't places that were only choc, but it ended up being a great experience, getting a taste of other things with chocolate in it, like bread, cupcakes, caramels, and fudge, as well as chocolate bars and bon bons. We also enjoyed our guide, Linda. She was bubbly (but not sickingly), knowledgeable about the area and our stops, careful about getting us to our destination safely, and good about moving us along but not rushing us. Only complaint....1 of our stops was closed for the thanksgiving weekend. Great Food Tour should've either checked with each stop bc if the holiday, and the closed stop should've notified the tour company. We weren't made aware of the closure until near the end.
