Even as a local, the Georgetown Food tour was a blast! Here's why. 1) Tour: It's three hours long, but stopping at four places for bites broke up the walking. It was the perfect balance of walking around the neighborhood and eating good food while sitting and resting. They pay full price for the food at each stop and even give a 20% tip. Each stop gives a full portion so come hungry and ready to learn. 2) Guide: We had Jim and he was the perfect balance of personable, interesting, knowledgeable, and passionate. He clearly knows the city well and is a foodie himself. He did an excellent job of teaching this local some new facts and giving tourists a more holistic view of Washington, D.C. 3) Mission: The company is local and gives back to a non-profit called Bread for the City with every tour ticket purchased. A food tour is a must when visiting another city so we booked the U Street Food Tour through Blue Fern Travel. Our stops are below: Ben's Chili Bowl to try their original chili half-smoke Habesha Market & Carry-Out to try the special veggie combo Colada Shop to try a picadillo (beef) and guava pastelito Ice Cream Jubilee to try a scoop of ice cream My favorite stops were Ben's Chili Bowl and Colada Shop. If you look on the website you can see where your tour dollars are going so I liked that. During our food tour the history piece was really long in-between the second and third stop and the third stop was right next to the final so I think there could be a better balance to that especially during the colder months. I did the coctails and jazz FIZZ tour on U street and had the best 3 hours with my friend! The local spots we visited were amazing both food wise and drink options! During a work trip to DC, we were set up with a walking food tour with Carpe DC Food Tours in DC's historic U-Street Corridor. I loved that it was something that I probably wouldn't have considered initially, but actually ended up really liking because of the historical background/significance and I was able to expand my palate while experiencing local food that I wouldn't have even thought of trying while in DC! We all met up at Ben's Chili Bowl for some of their famous half smokes, then headed down the street to Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant where we got down on some big combo platters paired with injera & honey wine. No great tour is complete without desserts and so we ended our evening at the trendy Tico DC restaurant for some margaritas and tres leches cakes. In between each stop we were given a history of the buildings, the city, the people etc.. and as someone who took history classes for all my electives in college, I really appreciated all the historical details. Overall, I enjoyed myself. It was my first time experiencing a progressive dinner type of tour and now I want to try more. It would have been nice to know how much food to expect in the beginning so that we could pace ourselves accordingly, but I may have just missed those details? I thought it was the perfect amount of food without going overboard and the tour gave me a deeper understanding of the city and how things came to be in that specific neighborhood. This tour is a triple play: eating, exercise and information. Stefan and Mary are amazing story tellers. Some of the details that will stay with me are: * The founder of the 9:30 club gave R.E.M. their start, but refused to allow The Police to place because she didn't like the song, "Roxanne." * Phyllis E. Wheatley was a cool chick who loved to empower women. * DC alleys are so much more than shortcuts. There is a rich history behind them. * Etete is a term of endearment for the chef at Etete's, who cooks for Stevie Wonder when he is in town. * I want to meet the owner of Eatonville and hug him for Bus Boys & Poets, not to mention the fried green tomatoes at his other restaurant. I would suggest wearing comfortable shoes since there is walking in between restaurants. This tour is for anyone who enjoys the flavors of area restaurants and has an interest in DC's history. Being a DC resident, I was surprised at all the treasures that had been under my nose all this time. I appreciated having a vegetarian choice at every restaurant. My favorite item was the vegetarian chili at Ben's Next Door. I also really enjoyed the Ethiopian items at Etete. If a lentil is involved, I am there. If I ever took another tour, I would bring ziplock bags and a container to carry any leftovers I could not finish. I plan on revisiting all of the restaurants on the tour and taking advantage of all the really cool things that the U Street corridor has to offer. I give the tour guides two forks up! read more

He does it so effortlessly you begin to wonder if walking around DC is something he does every hour of every day. You will walk. You will eat. You will drink. You will learn. My husband and I had a very positive experience with Carpe DC Food Tour. We felt the price was worth the whole experience. We were very full at the end of the tour and learned a great deal about the U. Street area. The tour started on time at 11:30 and ended right around 2:30 p.m. The pace of the tour was awesome. It began and ended near a metro station which was very convenient for us. I would highly recommend this tour to friends and family. Although I've lived in DC for the past 8+ years, I've (shockingly) never been to the U Street/Shaw neighborhoods. The Carpe DC Food Tour was a great introduction to the area! I had so much fun exploring, learning the history and culture, and eating my way through this vibrant neighborhood. I loved how every aspect of the tour was very well thought out and planned. We began and ended the tour near 2 different Metro stations, which was super convenient. I also loved the VIP treatment that we received. At every establishment that we visited, we were seated and served our food immediately - awesome! :) The restaurants we visited on the tour, and the food / alcohol that we tasted, were: 1) Ben's Next Door - Half Smoke with chips + Chili Fries / DC Brau beer 2) Eatonville - Fried Green Tomato / District Common beer from Atlas Brew Works 3) Fast Gourmet - Beef empanadas 4) Etete - Vegetarian platter (to share) / Ethiopian honey wine 5) Mockingbird Hill - Surryano ham / Sherry 6) Bistro Bohem - Apple Strudel / Pilsner beer I also loved visiting the various sites that we stopped along the way, including the African American Civil War Memorial, Howard Theater, and the Duke Ellington statue. Update: I recently went on a second Carpe DC food tour with the DH. We took the Georgetown Tour with Stefan and LOVED it! The tour included: donuts, falafels in pita, fried green tomatoes, bahn mi sandwiches, and pastries. Everything we tried was easily 5/5 on it's own, but it was awesome to get to try all of it on one day. Not to mention Stefan is a history whiz! The DH and I grew up in the greater DC area and we both learned a ton. Stefan provides an account of popular architectural styles, churches and religions, diverse positive historical figures, as well as some of the nitty gritty of history, such as the slave trade. Great experience, highly recommend it! read more

I will preface this review by saying I have been on several food tours in major cities prior to this one--2 in New York, Chicago, Portland, and Seattle. As the rating defines a 2 star review, "Meh. I've experienced better." Here's why: * This tour (U street) was significantly pricier at ~$68. I paid significantly less on all of my other food tours and they all lasted longer and had more total hearty tastings. This U street tour had 4 stops and no more than 1 mile of walking. As a comparison, my tour of Chicago's best pizzerias drove us in a bus over 20 miles, gave us very good in depth history of the area, and fed us several amazing tastings. All this for less money. As another comparison, my tour of New York's Greenwich Village district was also less expensive and had a lot more tastings and coverage. * This tour had a couple of mediocre tastings. Out of the 4 tastings, the kale salad at the market seemed like an afterthought, it was pretty basic and nothing special when you take into account you are on a food tour and should be experiencing something extraordinary. The Chili Dog and Fries at the first stop were OK, but nothing to write home about. The Ethiopian spot was actually pretty good, but probably not the best in the area. The tea spot at the end was actually solid though. All in all, if you are only taking us to 4 spots, they better be the best of the best in that area. 2 of the 4 spots if you look them up on Yelp only have 3.5/5 stars in terms of average Yelp rating. These were my 2 main gripes, here are a few other things of note: * It seems like this company recently hired new tour guides. The guide we had, though she was a nice lady, she seriously lacked enthusiasm. If you are leading a tour, a level of charisma is expected so the guests can feed off of that energy and be excited for what's ahead. Again, she was nice, but all of the other tours I've been on had a passionate, interactive, and enthusiastic guide in comparison. * Some people may feel awkward sharing food from the same platter at the Ethiopian stop. Sure it is the way Ethiopian food is eaten, but you are not eating with several of your closest friends here, everyone is basically a stranger whose hygiene habits you know nothing of. The guide did mention that she could get us a separate plate to eat on, but it seems like this shouldn't be something you offer, it should be an option that is already on the table. That way the people that are uncomfortable sharing food the traditional way don't have to specifically ask for a separate plate, they can just reach out, grab one, and continue with the sampling. * The tour was significantly shorter than the timeframe mentioned at the time of booking, about 45 minutes shorter. * The tour guide asked us to write "reviews" at the beginning of the tour and mentioned a scheme where if the company gets "x" amount of reviews (I forget the exact number), at the end of the year, they will donate "x" amount to a cause. This inherently doesn't sound like a bad thing, but asking for reviews before the tour has basically even started is kind of off-putting, especially when your connotation is for us to write a positive review. Sure, you want your business to grow, but it should be because you are actually running a 5 star show and getting actual unbiased reviews. Yelp has a page of guidelines that literally says you shouldn't ask your customers for reviews. I personally am not against businesses asking for reviews, but it shouldn't be asked with the expectation of a positive review and before the service is even performed. These are my honest thoughts and my intent is in no way to hurt this business, I hope they can improve in the future and take these comments into consideration. Thank you. read more

Stefan was a true professional and articulated the history in a nonbiased, very detailed manner. Stefan's passion exuded and kept me interested in every word. The tour started at Ben Chili's Bowl and we went to MatchBox, Habesha Market, Fast Gourmet, Glen's Garden Market and Calabash Tea & Tonic. I did individual reviews on each of these businesses and will not go into much detail now. I named them to give you an idea of the places we visited during the tour. This is a walking tour that allows you to see the beautiful artistic scene of U Street and feel the vibe of the current neighborhood. The tour would be great for families as well. Took the hubs to eat the streets for an anniversary trip. So excited to walk the streets of D.C., get to know the history, the people and the culture, all while tasting some of the best dishes that represent this neighborhood. The U Street tour is wonderful. And Stephen was a fantastic tour guide. He was so knowledgeable about the restaurants we visited - talking about their history, food, and why they are important figures in the community. Stephen talked to significant buildings and people who made (and are making) the neighborhood what it is. My fiance and I had a fantastic afternoon with Stefan in our food tour of the U st. and Shaw area. We had been to the area only once or twice before, in the dark of night, so I really never was able to see the gem of a place we were walking through very well. But man is it worth your attention! And Stefan makes it phenomenally more interesting in his extensive knowledge of the area. I don't think we stumped him on any questions! So to break it down: 6 Stops 1. Ben's Next Door -- you get a half smoke chili cheese dog and a small handful of chili cheese fries. We had had something from the Ben's Chili Bowl in Rosslyn, VA some months prior and been pretty bored. But this time around it was much better. I am now convinced we went on a bad day for the cook, and we will try it again thanks to Carpe DC! 2. Eatonville -- an absolutely beautiful, fun place that did the best fried green tomato I've ever had in my life. We live in NoVa, so making our way to the U st area is not a trivial thing. But we will defiantly be going back for this place. 3. Fast Gourmet -- I would never have stepped foot in this place without Carpe DC, and it is awesome that they found it. We had a fried empanada, which in and of themselves, I LOVE. Who doesn't love wonderful pastry dough filled with amazing everything!? This one was stuffed with corn and smoked ham, which doesn't sound especially exciting, but oh my goodness! I don't know what they did to that corn, but it was amazing! 4. Etete -- Yet again I'm so glad I had this tour as an excuse to get me to try Ethiopian again. After having a bad experience once before I might never have stepped foot in one again without this. The server was kind of a shit, she never looked at us and literally never said a single word to us, but we had Stefan, and so it really didn't matter that she sucked. Service aside, the food was great. Etete was named the best Ethiopian in DC for multiple years running. We had the vegetarian collection which was spectacular! 5. Mockingbird Hill -- This place was super fascinating. A sherry bar, which in an of itself might throw most people off the tail. Sherry? Isn't that that gross alcohol you cook with and would NEVER dream of drinking on it's own?? Well yes, but it is also apparently a very flexible alcohol that allows for many flavors and wonderful tasted to be infused along with. This place redefined sherry as a fortified wine, and I will look very forward to going back and trying one of their flights. We had a smoked ham tasting here which was delicious, but a bit too salty to be eaten alone for me. I wish it had come with a tiny bit of cheese, or tomatoes, just something to pair with the very strong meat. A fantastic stop on the route though, glad they included it! 6. Kafe Bohem -- the dessert of the whole route, I wish this adorable little Czech cafe was closer to my home. I would just love to go there and do my homework or jun hangout with friends. Very comfortable, welcoming, and bright. The apple strudel was pretty dang good, as Stefan described: the apples have been cooked in such a way to almost caramelize them and turn them into apple butter. If it had only been slightly toasted it would have been breath taking. :) Over all a fantastically enjoyable afternoon wandering a neighborhood of my own home city I had never gotten to experience like that. All the food was great- it was a wide mix of flavors, and the alcohol pairing rocked! I tried some new beers, and discovered that I love Sherry. The tour guides were super knowledgable, between each location we continued a lively discussion about the history of U street. I found Carpe DC Food Tours on Groupon. I was lucky enough to be the only "tourist" who had signed up for that day, so I got an intimate experience with Mary. Mary was great; she knew a lot about the black history of DC, and I learned new bits about history while expanding my knowledge on other bits. If you can, do take time to learn about Mary and her husband's inspiring journey towards beginning Carpe DC Food Tours, if possible. I had no idea what to expect from the food I would eat. My mouth and my tummy were both elated as every dish I ate was excellent. I got to try out some new spots, as well as some new foods from spots I had been to previously. I loved the U Street / Shaw Food Tour! As a vegetarian, I get usually a little anxious about getting enough to eat with a veggie option, but everything was delicious and I left the last stop completely stuffed to the gills. We went to some great places - a few I had always wanted to try and some I never knew about. Stefan and Mary did an awesome job picking out the menu from each place too (especially the beers)! My friend and I did the Carpe DC Happy Hour tour and the only down side was that it was our last night in town and we could not further explore the places we went and all of the wonderful sounding suggestions we received. The tour involved 3 stops at local eateries/bars. Each location was unique it its story, atmosphere, and what food options they had available. In between each stop we took a little detour to a historical site that you generally would not come across in your normal travels. Even though it was raining, and we saw/heard the occasional bit of thunder and lightening, the walk was enjoyable and interesting. Amazing tour and evening. Can't speak highly enough about it. This was the first food tour I've ever been on, so I went into it not really sure what to expect. Having worked in restaurants for several years in Philadelphia, I was really excited to see what a DC food tour had to offer. All that being said, Mary and Stefan have built a truly incredible experience-- whatever expectations I did have, it exceeded all of them. Not only did we try a diverse range of really amazing restaurants -- the food was fantastic and the portions were perfect -- but they incorporated interesting, fun, and historical information about each DC area and each restaurant. In the end, you learn a lot about the city and it's history through it's food culture and well-planned stops along the walk between restaurants. And you get to eat really, really well (and drink too, if you want!). I've been local to DC for a few years now but I discovered several places that I hadn't known about before and that I will definitely be going back to. Mary and Stefan are the best kind of tour guide -- fun, super friendly, and very knowledgeable about the food and history of DC. Our tour guide was a young girl, super nice and charismatic, but clearly did not have the training to lead a tour. She didn't know what Old Ebbitts was and had no suggestions for dinner later. We hit some great stops, but did not get to taste the best of what each place had to offer. We noticed she ordered the cheapest thing on the menu per person AND THE GROUP HAD TO SHARE A BEER. That was weird. If we had a different tour guide, it'd still be two stars because she wasn't the issue. read more

Great food tour that was equally delicious and educational. I took the U Street tour. There was a lot of walking but it was perfect since you got to walk off what you ate. I enjoyed every spot, especially the corn empanada at Fast Gourmet. I was kind of disappointed in our last stop which was a tea/coffee shop. This was suppose to be a dessert spot but I'm sorry I do not consider zucchini bread and tea dessert. I wished it was an ice cream/pastry spot instead. I was expecting a little different kind of tour. In some ways this was better than I was expecting, in some ways it didn't really measure up. I was expecting a tour of DC's unique-to-the-area or artisanal foods. We got one DC specialty (a halfsmoke) which was great, and the chili cheese fries that came with it were awesome, as was the locally made beer. The second stop was very good Ethiopian which was served with a new-to-me Ethiopian honey wine so that was fun, but I'm not sure how it's a DC specialty. The third stop was a so-so Italian deli which fronts a very cool venue, but Italian isn't a DC specialty and I didn't get the impression they were making any of their meats or cheeses from scratch. The fourth stop was a little tea shop that was very cute, had great tea and vegan/vegetarian desserts, but again I'm not sure how this is a specialty of DC. The true star of this tour is the history of the area. I wasn't even aware when I signed up for the tour that the area was historically black with a fascinating history. It was really great to get to know this little area of DC and its history, and I'd visit at least two of these places again if I were in the area, but the tour itself wasn't what I was expecting. read more
