There are a handful of trendy, Western-style sushi spots in North County, but I was craving something more "traditional," and Blue Fin definitely hit the spot. The lunch nigiri sets are a good value and tasted super fresh. We also ordered the hamachi kama which was delicious (it takes a bit longer to cook, so it came out about halfway through the meal). We go back every other week and love the vibe here. My favorites are the Blue Fin Roll and the Cali Roll. The fried oysters and the mushroom special are delicious. One of our regular orders is Stuffed Orange as you can call it. It is like a stuffed tomato but wrapped in salmon as opposed to tuna. Same spicy scallops inside. Soooo good. We get like 3 orders. I don't know if Hooked On Sushi has changed management, but you either accept Uber Eats orders or you don't. You cannot leave it to the customer to guess if their order will make it or not. This used to be my favorite sushi place in Encinitas, and it is no longer after three times, I ordered sushi for delivery for my kids, and three times, the order was canceled without a phone call or notice of some sort, so I had to scramble, finding out an hour later, that the order was cancelled because the restaurant could not fulfill it? It was salmon sashimi, rainbow roll and cucumber rolls. Truly disappointed. Like I said, they should just drop delivery if it is going to be a guessing game for the customers. read more

One of our family's favorite sushi spots. Whenever we visit San Diego we always make a point to include a stop in Encinitas for Blue Fin Sushi. One amazing thing that sets this place apart is the attention to detail, not only in the preparation and presentation of the the dishes, but also to the customer's preferences. Once we became regulars and the chef's started realizing the dishes that my wife and I would order, they'd start tailoring the sequence at which the dishes came out so that my wife and I wouldn't be waiting in between our various dishes. We felt so appreciated that they realized this without us even mentioning it and we were absolutely amazed by the service! My Wife and I love coming here for our sushi fix. Truthfully I've tried all sushi in north county san diego. This place is authentic with chefs from japan who have lived and experienced the culture. Updated review: After giving this place several chances, they really blew it tonight. I put in my order at 5:48pm, they said it would take 1 hour and 15 minutes for my sushi, which is absurd, but ok, maybe they are extra busy. Keep in mind Temaki Bar in Encinitas has had my same order ready within 15 minutes many times, and other places under 25/30. I arrive around 7pm, so almost 75 minutes later. I don't see our food ready, except for our hot food that had been sitting. Strange that they would make teriyaki chicken, and baked sushi before the Nigiri and Sashimi. They said it may be another 10 minutes, which turned into 20, then 30. In total now almost 2 hours since I placed my order. They have 4 chefs and not that many people sitting. I see people come in to eat, sit down, and get their food before our order is done and this is after 75 minutes already. We paid $259 for our order, and when we got home, they forgot one persons meal, added Wasabi inside the nigiri after telling them to please not add any wasabi 3 times, and all of the hot food was completely cold, and sushi soggy. Such a disappointment, and normally I would have complained to the manager but the new employee at the front was very very nice, so I felt bad, but this was a horrible experience. This is the 3rd time they have been extremely late, and messed up my order, and added wasabi between the fish and rice, which is unpleasant to say the least. I then drove all the way back to get my missing food and they tried to charge me for it! They gave us someone else's order by mistake and we threw it away because nobody wanted it... It's safe to say I'm never going back. At least the one employee was really nice. read more

Went here for dinner with wife - we ordered a first round of dishes then ordered a second round - but the order never showed up since the waitress didn't put it in. We sat around and when the roll didn't show up, asked for the check, paid and left. Then, next day I noticed my credit card had been charged twice for the same amount. Went back to the restaurant and showed them the double charge. They took my details and I got a call back after a couple of days apologizing for the duplicate charge and I was promised a refund in 6-10 days. I waited for two weeks and when the refund still didn't show up, had to dispute the charge with my credit card company and still waiting for a resolution a month later. Also noticed that the waiting staff was drinking beer during the entire service. I know it customary to send a drink to the chef in sushi restaurants- but it seems like the entire staff was drinking the hour or so we were there for dinner! In any case, not an overall pleasant experience for us - never going back - would suggest that folks who have been here recently look at their credit card statements to make sure they weren't overcharged read more

First off, this isn't somewhere to go if you're looking for decent prices for your entire family. It's more on the expensive side but if you go in with that in mind then you won't be disappointed. The sushi is top notch and the fish is prepared very well. The udon was a hit with the 1 year old who is very picky in what he eats. I could've kept ordering sushi if not for the kiddo getting bored and wanting to run around. This place is also dog friendly with some outdoor seating and why we will be coming back, along with a beautiful ambiance. They have heat lamps if it gets chilly also so you don't have to worry about being cold outside. Regardless if you're inside or outside, the servers always come and check in multiple times. It always baffles me when you're at a restaurant with higher prices and the server can't even come out to check if everything arrived then expect a 20% tip. Immediately, as I opened the door and walked in, I was greeted by the most pleasant hostess Michelle. Her service was outstanding, very pleasant and attentive. AND that made the food taste even better than it already did! I cannot even tell you how I felt going in but I felt great going out. My husband had teriyaki chicken, rice, and shrimp tempura, both excellent. I had spicy scallop, a spicy tuna hand rolls, and the albacore special. They were all excellent. Had a Sapporo edamame. The food is quick, fresh and good. Some of the items aren't the traditional preparation but this place stays busy. On DoorDash, takeout, belly up to the bar, or seated...they have all the options available. It's a small place and in a strip mall but it can hold its own to stand alone spots. read more

Five stars for the quality of taste and selection of their sashimi! I put off coming to Blue Fin due to its lackluster Yelp rating compared to other nearby sushi places. Perhaps Blue Fin remains outside of people radar also because of its location. Compared to other fish eateries, Blue Fin is not along the coast, nor next to shopping areas like Homegoods etc. The only dislike about Blue Fin are the sushi rolls because those consistent of too much rice. The kampachi sashimi here is consistently melt-in-your mouth. They have a more unique selection of sashimi. Yes, they have the usual standard maguro and even hotate that is increasingly offered in local Japanese sushi places, but look to their handwritten seasonal fish availability menu inside the restaurant. The appetizer selection is also more varied than most sushi places in North County. For example, I have not had the maguro and potato appetizer for years because I cannot find this dish anywhere. We visited this Japanese sushi restaurant on Saturday the 27th and the experience was absolutely outstanding. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt authentic and welcoming. As someone who has always loved Japanese culture, I truly felt transported to Japan. The restaurant offers an excellent and wide selection of sake. We were perfectly guided in our choice by Aden, who took great care of our table and made the experience even more enjoyable. The sake was delicious, just like every dish we ordered. Despite the restaurant being very busy, the waiting time for the food was surprisingly short and everything arrived fresh and beautifully prepared. My husband chose the bento box, while I ordered several sushi rolls, all of them delightful. I am a big tuna lover and the tuna I had here was without a doubt one of the best I've ever tasted, with outstanding quality and flavor. The staff is extremely friendly, smiling and professional, making you feel comfortable right away. It was our first time here, but we will definitely return.
