An interesting space, this large brick building merges several restaurants and other businesses. The part that is a health food market contains an esoteric selection of local goods and niche brands for special diets. Prices were quite high, and one sale item I found wasn't discounted initially and so had to be corrected (and to be honest, still wasn't correct after being manually adjusted down). Some of the items were quality things that I would want regardless of location, and I doubt there's any real competition for this sort of thing around here, so if you want some vegan items or local lettuce, it might be worth stopping in. read more

I don't normally write reviews. I was taught that it was better not to say anything if you don't have something nice to say but I am so disappointed that I feel like it's worth saying something. For awhile my mother and I would go here and pick up vitamins, tea, and little things that caught our eye. There was a helpful employee that had advised us well several times and so we made a habit to go when she was working. Well she hasn't been there on the past 2 trips and instead we've been treated to some of the bad service that several other reviewers have experienced. All I can say is it left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think we'll be back. Additionally when I tried to contact the business through their website they couldn't have even been bothered to respond. This is the worst store I have ever been to, in this town at least. Well, it is very hard to get to. First off, the parking is very tight and then you get up the stairs. I almost fell trying but still they don't feel safe. Then you get inside. The young woman at the front was just on her phone. She did not look up at all to greet me or say a thing. I looked around for a bit and did get a few things but after seeing how much it was the young lady who checked me out laughed at me when I said I would have to put it back. I am on a pension and dont have a boat load to waste but I wanted to give this place a chance. There had been a thing on the news about it and normally when a place is highlighted on there it is for good reason but not this place. She made me feel so unwelcome and it just was not good. I told my grandson about it and he said that he had heard some not so great things about this place and the other stores inside, so I guess it is not just me. He told me some quite bad experiences his friends had had there. There is some place called the Hen House (I did not see it ) and he said a young lady he knew had paid over $10 for a glass of orange juice. I almost fell out of my seat. I got some eggs at the grocery part and they made me feel very ill and I tested them ( I always do this as I lived on a farm when I was younger) and about half floated to the top. Was just so baffled by it all. I would like to just go to the farmers market and let that be that. I have never been laughed at. There the woman was on the phone and what was on there was a little much. It seemed to be a website with half dressed young men. I used to, way back when, work at a shop but kids today do things that are just shameful. I will not be back. I have already started to take the vitamins I got but they are past expiration already. This is a bad place that you should say away from. I have heard some very bad things about this place. I would rather get my food somewhere where they treat you like a person and are not just on the phone. The place also looks under stocked. I was going to ask why but didn't get the chance to. I also can't believe the prices of some of these things. One of my grandchildren lives in Charlotte and the prices are high there but not as high as some of these things. I am shocked. I don't get why things are so much. I have never been to the old store but everyone I have talked to says it was worlds better than this one! I have gone in twice since they moved into the newly renovated location on main street. It is pretty depressing in there. I normally think of health food stores being cheerful and unique. I miss the two ladies that used to work there. They were nice and helpful. The flow of the store is bad, a lot of wasted space. They are poorly stocked. They have like, one of everything (but just one, like one bottle, one box, one coffee press..) They literally stock stuff like the coffee filters that you buy at walmart...I'm confused. Where is the natural healthy foods? It's a lot of dressed up expensive junk food. Not a lot of whole ingredients. Everything is like in a cubby. It was weird. I went in once hoping to find some ingredients for a Mediterranean meal I was making. I left empty handed. The next time I was looking for some gifts for a few people on my list. I also left empty handed (mostly because I could find the same exact item cheaper elsewhere...or there was just one item). It's a lot of hype for nothing. They have a lot of cheap (not in money but in health) frozen foods. They have almost no middle eastern food ingredients. It's just a barren landscape of nutritionally deficient offerings. I am a little confused by the kids stuff too. It's not natural, it's not organic. It was stuff like a polyester princess gown and some generic story books. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

So much variety in this quaint shop! Loved their selection of organic foods and the apothecary is exceptional! They have some really nice gifts and the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. I find BHM to be well-stocked, responsive, and a good neighbor. I live in the Historic District, and it has become of my version of the corner store that I used to shop at when I lived in much larger cities. Since I have complicated dietary needs and cook a varied menu, I often need items that the larger chains don't carry. I can often find it at BHM, and they are always happy to attempt special orders. Initially when Blue Hills was "Whole Health Center Natural Foods", it was a sheer pleasure to shop in. Sure it small, but had everything I needed, always in stock and consistent pricing. The employees were incredibly knowledgeable, from herbal remedies to organic pasta. When the location and ownership changed, things went downhill rapidly. Prices began to fluctuate within the span of 3 to 4 days, the stock was often not replenished promptly and it seemed as if the store were doomed. Thankfully one of the original owners stepped back in to rescue and rename it Blue Hills Market. Sadly, the situation with available items, constant high turnover of employees, and price gauging seems to be increasing. It's hit or miss if you make the trip to this store if a specialty item will be in stock, or IN DATE. I've often had to trek back to Abingdon to return items that had expired three weeks previously. When I inquire about a new product, it's hit or miss if the person working, except for one of the owners, is knowledgeable about it. Items have often been Googled on the employees' phones to retrieve the information. There's an increasing issue with a brunette female employee with glasses, curly hair, who has made inappropriate remarks regarding customers after they leave, saying "if a product is not in stock, tell them it's on backorder and just get them out of here to keep the line moving." When I questioned her about an item that had quadrupled in price within the last week, I was told it was "double the strength". I took a photo of the product, compared it to the one I have at home, it's exactly the same. As much as I love to support local business, there's too much damage done. The products that are carried here, including apothecary, are found at a fraction of the price at almost all local grocery stores and thank goodness for Amazon. Respectfully, don't misrepresent food and herbal items to your customers. Owners and management, please train your staff fully, and advise them not to falsify potency information on herbal supplements. Get it together. Namaste. read more
