Grew up in Abingdon but left too many years to count. To say that this town has changed would be an understatement. The level of restaurants that call it home is truly respectable. On this visit we tried to get into The Tavern but alias, we could not. After having great drinks there at the bar we walked across the street to try out The Summer and the Cellar and although Tavern would always be my first choice, this establishment runs a very close second. Let's break it down: Atmosphere 4 Stars: we found the name was very fitting to the vibe in a very good way. It's a small intimate experience that exceeds expectations. The amount of work that must have been done to make this a viable and outstanding place to dine shows itself throughout. Service 5 Stars: our waiter waisted no time to make us feel at home. He was very attentive to my wife's wine needs and allowed her to taste several before committing. He was involved without being suffocating. His knowledge of the menu was spot on. Food 4 Stars: they excelled. We started with the bread which I would strongly recommend. My only "ask" is that they provide olive oil. We had the wedge which was very fresh. Main course was the NY Strip. Cooked to perfection and very flavorful. We did not have desert. Selection seemed uninspiring and limited but after that meal, we were cool with that. Value 5 Stars: all this for $110 plus tip. In nashville it would have easily would have stung the wallet for over $150 or more. Overall we were very satisfied wirh the entire experience. Plus there is the bonus of the roof top which we indulged for drinks before dinner. I have definitely aged and matured in the years since living here and it's great to see that this wonderful town has done so with grace and style. read more

We finally had time to go to Summers Roof and I was pleasantly surprised. It was sunset so the view was stunning! The food was better than I expected, though my husband thought his serving of seabass was rather small I thought the plate looked nice. My wedge salad was great and our cocktails were good. The Beet Carpaccio was to die for - beautifully plated and a tasty balance of sweet, tart, savory and nutty flavors. I chose to pair it with a glass of Sangiovese. We have been frequent diners here, but no longer. We had a less than desirable experience here last Thursday night, celebrating a birthday of a dear friend and there were six of us, with a reservation for one of the igloos on the roof. That part of the experience is hard to beat. However, service was very slow, the menu on the roof is now different than the cellar, what a mistake on their part. They were out of the one steak on the menu, replaced by a tough piece of T-bone steak. I ate a burger, not the kind of place we frequent to have a hamburger. Overall, very disappointing! We have a reservation for the rooftop again in January, but cancelling that today. This was absolutely our favorite place to dine, but we are done now, a very embarrassing experience with our friends. Their first and last time there as well! Good luck! read more

Had dinner tonight at Summers Cellar. Overall it was one of the best meals I have had recently in our area. We had two small plates, my wife had the French Onion soup as her main and I had the pasta. Every dish was delicious. My pasta was perfectly cooked with a light tomato sauce over fresh pasta with wild mushrooms and Italian sausage. John was our server and he was a consummate professional. Just dined at the roof restaurant. The food was good but not outstanding. I had the salmon which was well prepared and flavored but there was a triangle of what was supposed to be cornbread but was so dry it was inedible. Tempura vegetables well flavored and dipping sauces very good but batter not the smooth Japanese batter you would expect but very good. Like most other places, there is a dirth of servers but the two there were hustling and doing a good job. The roof has a wonderful view of Abingdon and environs and the the decor was pleasant but sparse - I liked it!. Went there to celebrate an engagement! They were very accommodating getting us rooftop seating. The drinks were delicious, however, they were served one at a time. We ordered appetizers, finished them, and waited a long time for our food to arrive! Everything was good, but pricey. If you plan to charge these prices, you need to step up your service!
