I typically prefer local businesses especially in Asheville to chains, but this one gets a pass because it's quite good. I've purchased many rubs, salts, spices, and sugars from them over the years and all of them have been amazing. I especially like their smoked salts. I like to bake giant chocolate chip cookies and sprinkle them with the smoked salt crystals to give them an extra layer of flavoring. You can taste anything you want such as the salts or sugars or rubs, just ask one of the associates to help you. You can smell anything you like yourself by just opening the jars and taking a nice whiff. Many items come in bags and some come in shakers. If you get something coarse you can ask for a grinder top that goes on your shaker for when you want smaller particles. I love the butchers blend general purpose seasoning for many things. My kids love the cinnamon sugar shaker with a grinder top....the put it on everything and we frequently run out. In addition to salts, spices, and sugars they have a huge tea selection. And before you scoff at the prices, just remember it takes just a tiny amount of these high quality loose leaf teas to make a cup of tea. Teas that you buy in the store are not fresh and are harvested too early, commercialized, and it requires a lot more to get the flavor you want. So these tiny bags of tea really do last a long time. I like to look up ancient tea and herbal blends online and then buy all the components here and make my own teas to try and then adjust the recipes to my liking. They often have some free samples of tea and other items to try hot or cold in the store, just ask. For me this is a store I always stop at when visiting Asheville. read more

I recently stayed at the Hilton Inn and every morning my friend would walk by this store on the way to the Clean Juice shop. It felt like every time we walked by we mistimed it as it was always closed. On the last day in town we finally were able to get in and I am so happy that we did. It has been a long time since I have been in such a nice tea shop. Their selection of loose leaf tea is impressive! And the lady who works here is so nice, friendly, helpful, and informative. She provided a card so we could order tea in the future once we ran out of what we purchased. Their selection is gigantic. This shop has the foundation of most cooking with oil, sugar, salt, and a large variety of herbs and spices. There was so much stuff it is impossible not to feel a dash overwhelmed! I found myself wandering back and forth staring at everything trying to think how much I could fit in my suitcase. I love popping in here for smells: enchanting aromas whether you're looking for cooking spices or tea leaves. They have a massive selection and a variety of sizes so you can get exactly what you need. Personally, I'd come only for something new or exotic because the prices are STEEP (pun intended). Check them out right in the center of downtown Asheville; you may need Google Maps as they are just a tad hard to spot squeezed in with all the other shops. My wife and I love the quality and selection of loose leaf teas at The Spice & Tea Exchange, unfortunately their South Park Charlotte location has recently closed. I was in Asheville for work and decided to visit the location there to get some tea(s). I got there just as they were closing, at least I thought but the doors had already been locked. There was a young lady working that night who was named Irish. I told her that I came all the way from Charlotte, she kindly let me into the store and provided excellent customer service. I've lived near Biltmore Park Town Square for years and I always walk by here. One day, I was on my way to Earth Fare to get some herbal teas and I thought, wait, isn't there a tea shop in Biltmore Park? So I pulled in and sure enough there it was. It's a sweet little shop with walls lined with jars filled with amazing teas, spices and honeys. Justine (I think was her name) greeted me warmly and asked if she could help me out. Yes, please! I asked about caffeine free teas and she showed me a selection, asked me some questions and opened a few jars to sniff a few tea jar lids. And wow, these loose leaf teas were amazing! I ended up purchasing 3 teas and an infuser. I was tempted to buy some spices too, but I wasn't sure what I needed without looking in my pantry. Of the teas, the Lavender Peach is my favorite. It's fragrant, floral and fruity, but not overpowering when brewed. I love the White Champagne Raspberry, a white tea too! I haven't tried my Goodnight Sleep Tight one just yet. They sell the teas by the ounce and once you buy it, they weigh it, package and label it neatly. All in all, this place is a great find for tea and spice lovers. For 3 teas and an infuser, it was in the $20 ish range. I thought that was a fine price considering the service and we're not buying teas in tea bags here off a shelf. I'm not sure how I missed reviewing this place as I've stopped by on numerous occasions. The Spice and Tea Exchange is a high quality store packed to the rim with all kinds of spices. They mix the spices right there in the store. The first time I was there I bought rose flavored sugar for my daughter's daily tea. There's actual rose petals in the sugar! They packaged it beautifully and I chose a pretty silver spoon to go with. Pre COVID you could open all the numerous jars of sample spices, seasonings, teas, salts and sugars. Now they describe what things smell like and while it's not the same they do a great job! I am, however, looking forward to once again opening the jars, smelling the goodness and imagining what I can do with the next meal. My last visit i was there because I ran out of pumpkin seasoning and ran over to pick up some of their blend. I make great pumpkin pies but this spice took it to the next level. I will NEVER use anything else! Fun store and a little pricey but definitely worth it!! read more

Soooooooo much selection. Anyone who takes cooking seriously should stop by. If I ever replenish my spice cabinet this is where I'll start. I came in looked for some flavored salts and some paprika, I never thought I'd have so many choices in such a little place. The alder smoked salt is awesome. Amazing with salmon. And then the paprika, depends on your preference. There is Spanish or Hungarian, smoked or sweet, this or that. For the culinary inept they also have spice mixes. You can have all the things you would need for a pizza sauce in one little baggie. The tea selection ain't bad either. I came here shortly before closing time so didn't have too much time to browse, but I did enjoy perusing the many rows of spices, teas, pre-mixes (the korean mix!), infused sugars (the blueberry sugar smells heavenly) and various tea accessories. I like how they display each tea with a jar of the actual tea leaves and the staff encouraged us to open the jar and take a whiff. I ended up purchasing the raspberry lavender lemonade mix ($7) which comes with a bag of raspberry infused sugar, and a bag of dried lavender. My friend bought it from here and made it for me in the past and it was honestly THE best lemonade I've ever had. The lavender and raspberry balance the tart lemony flavor perfectly. read more

This shop is adorable. You feel like you're being wrapped in a delicious smelling hug when you walk inside. They have a huge section of cooking spices and spice blends, as well as a similar section for baking, and another for tea! I wanted to buy everything, but I would have gone broke doing so as the prices are a bit high. The staff was super friendly. The place was hopping, even on a weekday evening. I could have spent hours opening the glass jars to smell (which you're allowed to do!) and reading the descriptions on their unique tea blends. This Spice & Tea Exchange was on the larger size. It was very clean and well organized. The staff was very friendly and helpful is assisting with pouring out and packaging the quantity of tea that I wanted. They did participate in the buy 9 ounces and get the 10th free. The prices for the tea were relatively cheap when compared to some other tea companies I usually purchase my teas from. By far one of their best teas is their Coconut Oolong Tea, which I highly recommend for tea drinkers looking for a soothing and smooth tea. read more

It's difficult to find a wide range of bulk spices in my home city, so I was impressed by the variety of offerings at the Spice & Tea Exchange. I was especially happy to find asafoetida, a pungent spice typically used in Indian cooking, as well as Vietnamese cinnamon and a couple unique chili powders. The two (2) employees were very helpful while I browsed and sniffed, and offered us free samples of green tea mints when we checked out. A few things to note: 1) The employees will measure out the spices for you, just bring the jar to the weighing station, 2) Don't pass over the store's special blends and gift boxes, if you are looking for a distinctive gift for family/friends, 3) Purchase at least one (1) type of flavored salt (I recommend smoked alderwood!), and 4) Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are a spice newbie. read more

This shop is my happy place. Even if I don't have any tea or spices on my shopping list, I have to stop in whenever I'm nearby to fill my lungs with the scent of blueberry sugar and sriracha salt. The Spice and Tea Exchange is less of a retail destination and more of an experience. Don't be shy; ask questions and smell yourself silly. The employees are consistently kind, knowledgeable, and helpful without being pushy or pretentious. On my last visit, we were tempted by the "buy six, get the seventh free" offer and took the opportunity to try several new-to-us products. We walked away spending $50 in sugars, salts, and spice blends. It may feel a bit expensive, but the unique items and high quality make the price worth the investment. In closing, a tip I picked up from personal experience: skip the tiny packet of truffle salt and buy yourself the glass grinder instead. In an attempt to be eco-friendly and save a bag, I carried my truffle salt in my purse after my purchase. Within a few hours, the unmistakable smell of truffles was embedded in the fabric of my handbag for weeks to come. Think about it...canned food vs fresh? Same thing with your herbs, spices and teas. I'm currently enjoying the International Black Tea and the Lemon Tea which came in a gift pack with lemon sugar. I also was thrilled to find Zaatar a middle eastern spice blend, pre-mixed. Will go great with hummus or used as a dry rub on meat. The teas are awesome...literally exactly the way I like my tea: doesn't punch you in the face, smoooooth and mellow but with a richness of flavor. Nearly brand new spice shop in downtown Asheville has everything you might need for cooking at home... I always prefer to buy my spices like this, in bulk... they're almost always a lot cheaper than at the grocery store... And often times more fresh than those jars that sit around for months on end. The staff here was very friendly and helpful... they knew a lot about their products and were eager to suggest to sample this or that. Such a great selection! I love that they let you sample the salts. My friends ended up buying the ghost pepper salt which I was too scared to even try (judging from their reactions, no thanks). We bought some truffle salt which was very well flavored. My favorite truffle salt company stopped making/selling it and not all the truffle salts taste the same, but this was closest to what we love. I love just perusing through this shop, and the pre-packaged mixes for drinks and dips is such a great idea! I've been to a Penzeys Spices before and The Spice & Tea Exchange is in the same boat. Penzeys definitely carries a wider variety of spices and herbs, but The Spice & Tea Exchange makes up for that by having a tea selection. The tea selection is decent and I highly suggest picking up one of the tea & flavored sugar combinations. I got the Chai Tea with Ginger Sugar. Chai Tea is typically great on it's own, but the Ginger Sugar definitely gives the tea a bit more spiciness. Perfect for a cold day. Also, definitely pick up one of the Baker's Secret grinders. It contains cocoa nibs, vanilla turbinado sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup granules, ginger, and nutmeg. Holy crap is this stuff amazing. I like to put it on oatmeal, buttered toast, cookies, coffee, or pretty much most desserts. read more

If you are an Ashevillian or you are visitiing downtown stop in this store. This is my go to store for spice blends. My favorite is the Vic's Garlic. Anytime I cook I'm reaching for that blend in my spice cabinet. I love that you can smell the blends and taste some of the salts. They have a rewards program that allows for discounts. Really really loved this jewel of a shop! More than just tea, more than just spices and it kept my kids interested in flavored for quite a while.
