a display of spices and teas
    Greta Z.

I love popping in here for smells: enchanting aromas whether you're looking for cooking spices or tea leaves. They have a massive selection and a variety of sizes so you can get exactly what you need. Personally, I'd come only for something new or exotic because the prices are STEEP (pun intended). Check them out right in the center of downtown Asheville; you may need Google Maps as they are just a tad hard to spot squeezed in with all the other shops. I'm glad they're here; nothing else quite like it.

Bad rooibos and so-so chocolate chai tea
    John Y.

I stopped in to purchase chai loose leaf tea and they were out but had a sampler pack of rooibos chai (which i absolutely hate), chocolate chai (which is so-so but not bad enough to throw away) and regular chai which was decent but not as good as the mile high or thai chai from Spice & tea merchants of Asheville (loose leaf) or the inhouse chai served at Rise Above.

    My lovely herbal tea purchases!

I'm not a master chef, but I was impressed by their selection of spices and teas. The staff also helped me with samples, which was pleasant.

We can't smell the spice jars any longer due to Covid but they made it an awesome experience as always.

The historic architecture is beautiful and definitely catches your eye from the outside, but unfortunately that's where the excitement ended for me. Visiting on a Sunday afternoon, the building felt surprisingly quiet. There was very little foot traffic, and many of the shops had few or no customers, giving the space an empty atmosphere rather than the lively marketplace I expected. It's very disappointing!! Parking is another downside. There's no free parking nearby, so you'll need to use metered street parking or pay for one of the public parking garages if you're driving. I prepaid 1.5 hours and was out of the building in less than half and hour.

We each ordered individually, but tasted everyone's dish. Beef Tartare: beautifully presented and well balanced. Served with fried saltines (seasoned with Old Bay seasoning). Wood Grilled Asparagus: perfection! Absolutely LOVED the sauce gribiche! Braised Rabbit and Nettle Cavatelli: I thought this dish was stunning. The texture of the cavatelli could not be better and the flavors melded well together. Lardon added savoriness while the pickled ramps balanced the palate. Soft Herb & Pea Risotto: loved this in terms of texture but needed a touch of salt. We added a pinch of their house special salt (mined from a 100 year old salt mine), and it did the trick! Wild Mushroom Tagliatelle: this was my favorite item, though also, requiring a pinch of salt. I really appreciated that the truffle oil did not overpower the dish (that's a pet peeve of mine). We were provided with some truffle salt to enhance savoriness, which absolutely lifted the pasta to another level. Service all around was attentive and friendly. Definitely recommend if you're in town!
