I took my open dive certification course here and cannot recommend them enough. All of the instructors I had have been incredible, and they make sure that every session has a good instructor to student ratio (the most I've had was 4 students per instructor). They also only offer boat dives as shore diving can turn off a lot of people to diving as it's so hard for beginners. Due to weather, my scheduled dive got cancelled, and I was worried that I would not be able to get certified before a vacation where I was planning to dive. Keline and Harry were extremely accommodating and went out of their way to make sure that I could go on my final dive to get my license. This is an incredible dive shop and school. It's a top drawer establishment with dedicated, very experienced, and VERY NICE and caring instructors. The morning started off well. Help loading onto the boat, patient rental gear fittings, and a warm breakfast! As we were all sitting around have a good laugh and telling stories, a crew member came onto the boat and informed us that one of the engines was an the fritz and the trip would have to be cancelled. Keline, realizing I was from Pittsburgh, Pa and had traveled to California to dive, found myself and 4 others a spot on another boat diving the same area. And as an added bonus (being a single diver) found me a diving buddy who was also a crew member. This is by far above and beyond. Isaac (my dive buddy) was great to dive with, and very patient with the newer divers in our group (group of 4). I was referred to Blue Holic Scuba from a friend of mine and decided to stop by the store to buy my gear that I had researched and got recommendations from. I've been diving for many years now and have always rented but realized the amount of rental costs over the years was significantly more than purchasing my own equipment. Plus you don't have to worry about run down rentals.... I met with Harry, the shop owner, and went through items I researched and Blue Holic had it all in stock and in my size. Harry was extremely knowledgeable about the equipment and he is a really friendly guy. He liked my selections as he uses the same gear I selected which helped as he was able to explain more in detail from his own experiences with the equipment versus what he would have read in the specs. It also helped me as I have friends and family that own similar equipment as the items I selected. I was at the shop for probably over an hour picking out my gear, having it set up, and trying on different wet suits to ensure the best fit and comfort. On a recent trip from Phoenix, I stopped Blueholic for a tricky last minute need - a replacement Rx dive mask. They have a nice dive store on W Olympic with a great selection of equipment and services. But most importantly, the staff are top notch, really approachable, and willing to go the extra mile (or more!). In this case I called the shop and spoke to Keline to figure out options on a tight schedule before a Catalina Ferry. This required some express ordering of lenses from across town using FedEx. Of course, no surprise, FedEx screwed it up by trying to deliver at 8:30 when the business hours are 10-7 (sorry FedEx, this is on you, you do it to me in Phoenix all the time, and you need to get it together!). This was out of the control of Blueholic, but knowing I was on a schedule, they were not going to be daunted, and Keline spent the afternoon on the phone doing battle, and finally - when all else failed - sent an employee to the FedEx depot to retrieve it. Maybe more telling than this, when the employee Kevin rolled into the store with the lenses, Keline tried to slip him some cash and he refused it! Seemed telling of a great family business culture, and made my dive trip for certain. As we killed a few minutes waiting for Kevin to pull in, I also perused the equipment selection, and pricing - the shop definitely gets a two thumbs up. COMMUNITY. the past few months have been very difficult for all of us . Financially and mentally, the covid-19 has changed our city and communities in the worst way possible. A few weeks ago I ripped my freediving fin after 5 years with the same fins. I was looking for the cheapest way possible to fix them and couldn't seem to get the correct parts online. So I googled scuba near me. And this shop came up. I've been going to a different shop for 3 years but they had to shut down due to covid-19. Harry took his time and try to help me. RENTERS BEWARE I am a onetime customer of Blue Holic Dive Shop It all started with an honest interest in getting my two young thirteen year old boys certified as PADI divers. We rented two BC's, Regulators and wetsuits from Blue Holic as a part of our certification program. Although, I am not recommending this company and their facilities for any PADI certification, my two boys did get the certification intended. It is with the manner in which I was treated as a customer renting equipment that I have serious reservations regarding the tactics and possibly integrity of this staff and company. Specifically, the day returning the rented equipment is where my real problems unfolded. The only two employees present were Keline and Josh. As directed, I began carrying the rental equipment from my car to a storage area located at the rear of the store. I might note the storage room was a complete disorganized mess with piles of equipment piled all over the room. I was told to pile the equipment on the floor. On my second trip at my car Josh offered to help and grabbed one regulator from my car and the other was carried by me into the storage area. I placed the items I was carrying on the pile of items I previously left. On my third and final trip carrying the balance of items, Keline was there sorting through my pile throwing items around seeming to be agitated. Josh came into the room and Keline asked him where are the regulators. I said he took them and he said he only picked up one. I then reminded him that I carried the 2nd regulator and placed it on the pile and have no idea where it was moved to as all the stuff I brought in was now scattered all over the storage room. I rechecked my car and asked what happened to the one Josh carried in. He stated he already hung it up. I looked in that room and noted (pic attached) that there were many regulators hanging on the wall. He said the only one he has is NOT labeled and the missing one is labeled # 4 which struck me as very odd that they would issue items with no ID label. I pointed out that there are many regulators on the wall that have no label and could very well be the missing one and perhaps mislabeled . His response was they are all accounted for. I told both Keline and Josh, I am positive both regulators were returned, one Josh carried in and the other placed in the pile under the supervision of Keline. Why in the world would I want to keep a very used regulator. I asked them to please verify it was not moved into another area and misplaced and I would check my car and home again as I was taking the wetsuits and BC's back home to rinse better with fresh water as request by them. I returned and informed them I don't have it. I also noted to them they never gave me a receipt for the rental and I asked to see the original which they had on a clipboard with the customer carbon copy still attached with handmade notes that I believe were not put on at my time of rental or I would have initialed as a very basic contract protocol. I was conveniently not given a copy at the time of rental which I confirmed with Josh. Unfortunately, under protest I was charged $1,000 for a regulator that was lost after giving them possession. read more

Me and my boyfriend recently completed the Open Water Padi Certification course here. Between the two of us, we worked directly with Son, Daniel, Josh, and Colleen. We very much valued their expertise, patience, & good humor. I would definitely recommend this place. We found a groupon for the course. And like the saying goes, "scuba diving is an expensive hobby". If we couldn't find a discounted deal that was at least somewhat local, we probably would have held off. There is a caveat in the groupon deal that you must purchase snorkeling gear to qualify for free rental of the "big-deal expensive gear". Me and my boyfriend already owned most of the things on the list. This could have brought our scuba dreams to halt, but Colleen was willing to work with us; and I thought that was really cool. If I did this course all over again, there would be a couple of things I would do differently, so I will pass on that knowledge to any of you that are shopping out where to get your certification. All and all, from start to finish, this journey is a 9 day thing. Day 1 you watch educational videos. It's a lot of information to digest, which is fine, because you get a book with a lot of practice test. As far as studying, weekends are out the question, because of all the fun practice sessions you have. So, over the course of 5 days, it took my boyfriend 5 hours to go through the book; me on the other hand, it took me 15 hours! Working full time made this very difficult. So if I had to do this all over again, I would have begun reading before our first meeting. I think if I had gotten at least half way through the book beforehand, I could have finished the book and still maintained a normal sleep schedule. So if you have a full time schedule, this is something you may want to consider. Then there are a few things I picked up from my fellow students, & things unique to me that I will be taking with me in the future. In the program, there are two (veeeeeeeeery early in the morning) boats trips to Catalina. One of the boats has a bunch of beds. I saw one of my fellow students sleeping with a sleeping mask, & I thought that was genius! So on the next trip I packed a mask & earplugs just in case. The other genius thing I saw was another student using Ikea's signature big blue bag to haul around all her heavy gear. Although me & my boyfriend plan to buy the proper storage devices to haul all this stuff around, it simply isn't feasible right now. So I thought this was a great, quick, cheap way to solve this problem, so I absolutely followed suit! Coping with the cold is also another big issue. We did this program in January. I am extra sensitive to the cold, & even have Raynaud's Syndrome, which basically means it doesn't take much of a temperature drop for my fingers & toes to go completely numb & turn white & purple. I bought booties & gloves from the shop. The booties did a fantastic job of protecting my toes. Because I am such a wimp, my expectations were pretty low on how well these things would protect me. And the boots definitely did an amazing job! The gloves, not so much. But even with that said, if gloves do exist at a higher mm, I wouldn't waste my time buying 'em. You lose so much dexterity as it is. So anyways, the take away on that is: I should have packed my electric hand warmer to warm me up between dives; and now always will. The pool, even though warmed; for anyone extra sensitive like me, may want to be aware of that. In the 2nd pool session, I wore a vest hoodie wetsuit, maybe 2-3mm, that I bought at the shop, & that totally did the job for me. There are no words, pictures, or videos that can really encapsulate how cool the whole experience of diving is. My boyfriend has expressed how he really wanted to swim through a kelp forest. I thought, 'eh...doesn't sound great. But then we did! In Catalina! And holy crap! It was sooooooo cool! read more

All of the workers there were super nice and kind enough to teach a noobie how to do everything! I had a very unpleasant experience with the person that answered the phone. I wanted to sign up a friend for discovery diving. The complication was my friend did not know how to swim. The lady on the phone said that she was not sure how they were going to get my friend to get in the discovery class as she did not know how to swim. I had noted that the lady who answered the phone, the owner and I were a smart and creative people and that I was sure we could figure out a way to make it work. Needless to say things went sideways and she noted that I was being dismissive and combative, and hung up on me. I called back to ask to speak to the owner and she noted that I was again being dismissive and threatening because I said I was going to write a review on how poorly she handled the call. I would appreciate if Harry would call me to figure out what we can do. I still have faith in this store and what they stand for. What people forget is that one person is may $700 worth of sales but both online and word-of-mouth can amount to tens of thousands of dollars and future business. I personally rather write a positive review, as I don't enjoy writing bad reviews but when there is a lack of customer service or civility, I think other consumers should be aware of those aspects of doing business with anyone. read more

I wanted to buy snorkel gear because rental gear has always leaked and been uncomfortable. Keline was so incredibly kind and helpful. She spent lots of time with me, going through every dive mask, explaining the pros and cons. She helped me find the perfect fit, and picked out a great snorkel that had a triple purge (not a thing I knew about, but something beginners like me really need!) We were also able to find great fins and socks. I am not a strong swimmer or water sports person and I was very shy going to this type of shop, but they were so friendly and made me feel comfortable immediately. I'm currently getting my Open Water and Advanced Certifications, and every step of this process has been seamless. The staff at Blue Holic is very friendly and helpful, and they answered all of my questions (which I had a lot of). I came into the shop a couple times to do my lessons for the Open Water, and then we went to nearby pool for the pool lessons. The dive trips were also super fun and amazing experiences. They go roughly every other Saturday, and breakfast/lunch/snacks were provided. I'm also in a bit of a hurry to get both certifications since I'll be going on a trip in a couple months, but all of the staff members were really understanding and made sure that I would be able to finish it all up in time. Before I got some training there I was like some stupid jelly blob-dildo looking colony thing (those who dive the Channel Islands know what Iam talking about ) just clumsily going about the ocean, now.....well, now Iam like a fucking barracuda cutting thru the water like a chimp flung into space, like a tiger on a baby walrus, like Mike Tyson on Frazier- you get the point. The underwater world is an amazing wonder , don't waste your life and not explore it, embrace it, respect it, and feel it inside you (teehee). Seriously; you are doing a disservice you yourself not going underwater and blowing bubbles. SoCal has beautiful kelp forest, reefs, rigs, wrecks and extraordinary sea life and ecosystems wether you like to shoot things with a camera or a speargun. It def gets better when you start spearing some graceful, beautiful, majestic and delicious fish. Or if your already certified and looking for a place/people to dive with, they charter boats to the channel island and Catalina , lobster hunts and multi day trips -You must learn the ways of the diver,, and this will be the place to teach you young padawan. read more
