My 3 buddies and I did the open water in the summer. PCH is a Terrible organization. Very disorganized. Communication almost nonexistent. Nice people but truly awful teachers. Diving is too dangerous for sloppy, inconsistent teaching. They are supposedly on the PADI system but do not seem to be aware of any of the current PADI protocols or teaching. So one thing is taught via the PADI program and something completely different in the water. read more

My fiancé and I took the Open Water course as well as the Peak Performance Buoyancy and Nitrox classes with PCH. Brett and our instructor (Peter) are all around great guys who are obviously very passionate about diving - and it shows. During my pool day I had some trouble with one of the skills. Brett was kind enough to work with me one-on-one for a few minutes since his group was finished. Thanks to Peter and Brett's help and PATIENCE, I was able to pass the pool day. Despite being cleared to proceed to Catalina, I still felt a little uncomfortable. They happily invited me to come back to the pool the following week to practice and build my confidence - for no charge! Thanks to their patience and support my dives in Catalina were AMAZING. You truly can't do better for your scuba certification - these guys are not going to just rubber stamp you and get you out for your holidays. They will make sure that you are truly comfortable and well versed in everything you need to know to be safe and really enjoy diving. I was already certified previously as a young kid but wanted to get my husband his open water diver cert. I decided to just retake the course with him so that we could do it together and so I could refresh what I'd been taught before. I'll tell you that not all dive schools are made equal. There was so much that I learned for the first time taking this refresher course. Everyone took care to wear masks and put up dividers when we were in the classroom. We all wore masks/gaiters while in Catalina as well, and we paid a $80/head fee for deep cleaning all gear at the end of our course. I felt safe and that PCH Scuba took our protection seriously. They want very much to keep up and running through this crisis, and did everything they could to protect us. My first review of the year and my 400th one as well! I stumbled upon this company through a mass email at work. I guess someone at my work also works for PCH Scuba and was promoting a deal for $399. The deal was later featured on Groupon for the same price, it's valued at $843. I told a couple friends about it and we jumped on the deal. I communicated with the owner, Brett, in arranging our classes and he answered every email with no problems. I even spoke with him a couple times to verify some information I had given him. The first weekend is a two-day class and pool session in Burbank (they partnered up with Aqua Adventures Unlimited). Our class time was instructed by Dan and Amy and pool time was with Dan, Rhonda, and Steve. Everyone was so friendly and easygoing. When it came to the pool no one in our group of eight was ever neglected. The instructors understand that learning curves are different from person to person and they were very patient with everyone in our group. The second weekend we headed out to Catalina Island. All of the instructors from the first weekend was there, along with several others. PCH had an end of summer bash the same weekend we were out there so our group was pretty big. We stayed at the Hermosa Hotel which was included in our deal. I heard we actually booked that whole hotel out. Rhoda was our instructor for our smaller group of five out in the water. I had a little trouble on one of the dives and got a little nervous she helped me calm down. Unfortunately I couldn't complete all the dives that weekend, I had trouble equalizing while trying to dive. However I did go back another weekend with Dan as the instructor and I completed my dives with no problem. I'm now a certified open water scuba diver! I highly recommend this company, especially if they have their Groupon deal again. It is definitely worth the money and you'll be certified for a lifetime! I found PCH through an online deal and finally decided to get certified. What a great find this was! The staff is so friendly and welcoming that you immediately feel like you belong. Brett is a very passionate, honest and sincere person and as owner of a business is thoroughly knowledgeable, but the business is 2nd to him behind just introducing others to the world of SCUBA. The trip to Catalina was fantastic and the scuba training was top notch and professional and more like a friend than an instructor. Very disappointed!! I have purchased Scuba class for 2 on groupon 10 days ago. And I am just trying to get an update on my class date that I requested still available and books if sent out or not. So I can get ready for the class.I haven't received any email on updates since lastweek or calls. I have been calling them but they never returned my call. This morning the owner answered finally. I explained how I was trying to reach out to them on update. And he said we are on the water monday to Thursday can't answer your call and he gets so hot and angry that you purched your ticket on groupon you can cancel if you want to. Just got my Open water certification and couldn't be more stoked about it. The first weekend: Class and equipment, not so bad. Do your studying beforehand and it'll be a breeze. You can even breeze through the book if you want (not recommended ;)) Pool: Its pretty much a course on "In case shit happens, what are you going to do". It wasn't the most fun, but its damn necessary! The second weekend: CATALINA!! All the instructors were great, I think they were very organized, from meeting up at Catalina express all throughout the trip to back again. They got their program on lock :) Sean was our instructor and he was absolutely awesome. All about safety and fun, because that's what scuba is all about, right!? Still waiting to hear about him riding a hammerhead shark like a Harley Davidson. We got up to 80% visibility on our second day (and this is in October). Tons of sea life! I saw 2 octopuses, a moving star fish, a plethora of fish, especially the Garibaldi who just swim up to you like they have hulk sized balls and don't give a shark's ass. I just got certified this last weekend in Catalina and I have to say, one of the best experiences I've had. My teachers were Peter for the classroom and Kevin for the Pool and Open water and they were the best instructors. Absolute professionals who taught us the right way to do things without compromise. They were both very engaged in making our learning experience both fun and detail oriented at the same time. During the open water in Catalina we saw other classes with instructors from other schools and it was almost laughable how much better Peter and Kevin were as instructors for us. It was very clear we were being taught by top professionals who really know what they are doing. I felt bad for the other students we saw out there getting mediocre instruction and attention honestly. If we did something wrong, we did it again until we got it down the way it's supposed to be and they go by the letter of the book. Another important thing is these guys made everyone feel like they could achieve becoming a highly skilled open water diver if we just committed to it. I could not recommend these guys more if you are interested in getting certified the way everyone should! PCH Scuba is phenomenal! After spending 2 weekends with everyone for the classroom/pool sessions and then Catalina, I not only left the island with a new passion but some life long friends. The entire staff at PCH treats you like family. Not only is safety of the utmost importance but so is making sure everyone has a good time. I just got my open water certification a few weeks back and I have already signed up for the advance class :). The weekend my group went to Catalina we had a beautifully clear, calm day on Saturday and my group fit 3 dives in. On Sunday, however, we were able to take our first dive in the park but while diving the wind picked up making it a rougher than usual exit. During the exit we had our teacher (Ryan), plus Brett, waiting for us to make sure we got back to the stairs safely. Once out, we learned it was too rough to get back into the park by the stairs, thus thinking our day was done. That was only until we were told we could dive in the harbor! The entire staff, and then some, helped get everyone down to the water safely (including carrying all our stuff down to the water and helping us get our gear on making sure we felt comfortable before letting us loose to help the next student gear up). The staff seriously put in the effort to make the weekend possible, and amazing at that! I used to be nervous in the water and would get scared pretty easily. There was NOT ONE second I felt scared with PCH. I mean, scuba diving is a trip, but I felt very comfortable, confident, and safe diving with this team. Purchased my Open Water Certification and Catalina Trip for myself and my boyfriend on Groupon and was extremely, extremely glad I purchased. Brett, Kim, Karl, Peter and everyone else we met associated with PCH were awesome, extremely welcoming, helpful, persistent, understanding, etc. We spent the first weekend in the classroom where we were given comprehensive, but to-the-point education about diving, and then practical application the following day at the pool (which was very personal since we were in small group of 4 students per 1 instructor). I was at first not a natural in the pool (nor was my boyfriend), but the instructors and assistants worked with us until we were comfortable and got us up to speed quickly. They are extremely thorough and focus on you mastering the skill, all while keeping your safety considerations a first concern. The following weekend on Catalina was absolutely amazing and the experience was one of a kind. Karl was great and we would highly recommend working with him! We got to perform 6 dives over the course of Saturday and Sunday (we also did Peak Performance/Enriched air), and it was extremely fun as well as helped us to really master our skills. Being at the Dive Park and looking around at the 100 other students there with different dive instructors, I was proud to be with PCH as we were diving responsibility, on top of our sh*t/not damaging the environment, and not ruining the visibility conditions for everyone else, and it showed. If you are looking for a shop that will give you an extremely strong foundation of skills with a focus on patience and safety, not suck you dry for every dollar, and constantly provide you with insight into the "bigger picture" of diving and conserving the oceans and acting as an advocate toward caring for our environment, I'd definitely recommend PCH. PCH is amazing. I've mostly dealt with Kim and Brett but all the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The instruction is well organized and the pool and open water Diving is a lot of fun, but it can also be dangerous if you don't understand and follow all of the safety guidelines. PCH instructors will not let you move from the classroom to the pool to the open water without demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of diving safety. And that's a good thing!!!! Classroom day can be a little chaotic at the end if there is a large class and everyone is trying to buy gear. I would suggest heading to shop on a non classroom day to get your gear, but I would not have bought the right gear if I had done that. I'm glad I went through the classroom work and waited patiently for help choosing gear. Plus, if Brett is in one of his crazy moods he'll start giving you even crazier deals on gear. :-) One of Brett's (many) sayings is "I just want to get people in the water", and he means it. I have personally seen him bend over backwards to make sure a student has the gear and training they need to "get in the water" and enjoy it. read more

Groupon deal gets you 2 weekends of diving experience with pch scuba staff. keep in mind that you have to get to the facility or dive site super early in the morning 7-8am on weekends so if you're not used to waking up that early just disclosing that now. 1st weekend : day 1 is classroom training going through the books and taking tests, getting familiar with equipment. Day 2 is performing certification exercises in the pool with an instructor, you will be divided into small groups. If you pass and perform all of the exercises, you will be coming to the Catalina open water diving trip the following weekend. 2nd weekend. Friday night: Depart from downtown long beach landing to Catalina. Check into hotel and have dinner on your own or with the group of instructors and other students. Next morning wake up early and go to casino point for training. The following day (Sunday) is the same. Then you get signed off on the temporary PADI license and youre done. If must haul your duffel bag full of wet salty equipment back on the boat and to your own home to clean before returning them to the dive shop that pch scuba originally supplied them from. If you dont want to get your car wet pay the instructor 25 bucks to take the bag. If you take an earlier ferry out of Catalina this will not be an option you will have to transport your own bags. Pros: to get certified this 399 package is really a cheap deal. I've heard of people paying a lot more to get certified. Our instructor was patient and did not yell at you if you messed up or went to the surface. He was aware of the different anxiety levels and skill levels in our group. He was not pushy on tips he just wanted to do his job. Not once did he mention tips are appreciated or this is a tipping industry... Which made me want to tip him more for leaving the option up to me. Cons: certain instructors were on the bossy side. Being at downtown landing at 6:45 pm sharp on a Friday night was tough for people who had to drive through traffic and leave work early to meet this. Was that really necessary? We are responsible adults and getting to the terminal before the boat leaves (which is actually 7:55 pm) should not have been a problem. How long does it take to pass out a ticket? In talking to a few other people they also were stressed out for having to be at the terminal a full hour earlier. 2. Asking for tips way too often. I like to tip but I do not like to be asked and constantly reminded. Even the restaurant that we ate at with the group we were asked to leave a 30% tip and more than once. That ruined my dinner. I tip based on service you shouldn't assume that just because we were on an island that tipping 30% is automatic. read more
