He only cares about separating you from money. And he's a horrible salesman. No customer service, no smile and he's grumpy. And if you are more knowledgeable than him, he will dismiss you. He is very knowledgeable and willing to take his time to explain everything and check for proper fitments. He offers lessons too! Obviously for freediving and spearfishing but also for scuba! He's rude and has an elitist attitude towards everyone that comes in like they're complete kooks. I have done some diving in the past but I am brand new to Spearfishing. I walked into the store with little knowledge of what I needed and a lot of questions to ask. From the moment I walked in Harry was super helpful, patient with all my questions, and willing to help me navigate not only what I needed, but why I needed it, and how to use it. Absolute first class customer service! Harry was willing to spend the time with me to be sure I was knowledgeable about what I was doing. He was super respectful of my budget and wanted to be sure I was well equipped and had what I needed to be safe out in the water. I'm trying to get into skin diving and visited this place. The owner looked very friendly at first and he was willing to help me. However when I asked if there's any difference between long fin's brands when using them in the water, all he said was that they are from a different county and a different price. Also my feet were too small to all the fins that he had. At the end, I didn't find the fins that fit me and he mentioned that how experienced he is and I'm the one who doesn't know about the fins, just worried about brands, and denies all the fins that he offered. I wish I could learn more about fins from him and I wish he could respect how I feel about the fin size instead of being blamed about not having knowledge. read more

I stopped by the store last Friday and found it to be incredibly cluttered and customer service to be poor. But I thought perhaps from the looks of the place there might be a good deal to be found...boy was I wrong. A man named Harry who I assume is one of the owners sold me a used wetsuit under false pretenses. He represented the suit as retailing for $599 which induced me to purchase it for $250. I contacted the manufacturer and distributor and they both independently confirmed that the wetsuit (which is about 6 years old) originally retailed for about $300. I asked Harry to refund a portion of the purchase price, since nobody would pay $250 for a 6 year old used and defaced item that retailed for $300. He wouldn't even dignify the question with a response. He put some incomprehensible scribble on the receipt which he claims says "as is" but it doesn't say that; even if it did, "as is" is not a license to play fast an loose with the facts to extract a sale. Even if it was an honest mistake, which I seriously doubt, upon learning the true facts a reputable seller would take the item back. Before purchasing the wetsuit I asked Harry what their return policy is. He said as long as the I don't wear the items I can return them. Surprise surprise, Harry would not take the wetsuit or the brand new also overpriced diving hood back less than one week after I purchased them despite no use whatsoever. read more

Good local store. Its very hard to find a store that caters exclusively to free diving. Most dive shops will not carry free diving gear. Harry is very helpful, and seems to know what he's doing. Everyone will have their own opinions on gear selection, so it is always good to go as educated as you can. I picked up a weight belt, and a riffe mask. i need to return the mask as it didn't fit as well as i hoped it would and Harry said no problem. I've been to Freedive and Spear several times and on each occasion I leave in a bad mood. At this point, I only consider going if I'm in a pinch, which inevitably happens when something breaks, gets lost, etc. It's really the only show in town for a good selection of freediving and spearfishing stuff, and it's obvious that they know that. The owner Harry is condescending (treats me like an idiot when I ask a question), impatient (literally walked away from me mid-conversation because I didn't understand what he was trying to explain, actually said "oh, you finally made a choice" when I bought something), and has no tolerance for customers who want to save some money or want to use equipment for more than one very specific use. If I told him I was going to use a mask for both SCUBA and freediving, he'd probably have a seizure and kick me out! He also goes so far as to ask me if I'm going to buy something before he will answer my questions. Who does that? If you can get past Harry's personality, or you know exactly what you want, that still leaves the fact that all of his stuff is grossly overpriced. At this point, convenience is really the one and only virtue to this shop. I highly recommend finding an alternative to shopping at Freedive and Spear... At all costs! read more

I bought some gear here (about 2,000 dollars worth), knowing it was over priced by about 40% on the assumption that I would get better customer service. This is not the case. I actually got better return service from online retailers such as Scubasworld than from Harry. If you buy something defective or broken he WILL blame you and WILL NOT do anything to help you. If you get a wetsuit and the seams unravel after a week he WILL blame you and actually be rude about it. I used to work retail and for a dive shop. I know its pretty simple to call the manufacturer and get a item replaced. He doesn't seem to care. If I could give zero stars I would. After hearing lots of bad experiences from my friends (not just online reviews) I have confirmed this store should be avoided. In particular, the owner is a real jerk and has terrible interpersonal skills. If you don't start throwing money at him, he shuts down and practically ignores you or starts being rude. Not to mention not a lot of people go into this store in the first place. I was the only customer. Spearfishing enthusiasts in the area have a tough time saying good things about the owner, if any. Funny how the last good review he got was from a reviewer with only one review. The shop is tiny, disorganized has some interesting stuff but you are better off going to Spear America or Dive'N Surf or ordering something online. At least people at those places people will talk to you regardless of your intent to buy or not. Spear America is the most welcoming by far. The owner of Freedive and Spear seems like he inherited this store from another owner whom was successful at building the business. This guy now does not make a large effort to help you nor give you useful info. Maybe he is the original owner but has lost his interest in helping people out and is becoming an older and cranky jerk. This is a great shop, I found Harry extremely knowledgeable about spearfishing. He was patient with all of my questions and gave me a hands on demonstration on how to use various equipment that I was not familiar with. All in all, he probably spent in excess of 90 minutes just answering my questions, explaining the benefits and drawbacks of different gear. I couldn't recommend this place anymore. He asked where I purchased this gun and recommended that I bring it back to where I got it from. Had a great experience buying all my freediving gear here! I was about to take my first freediving course in the LA area and didn't know much about gear for colder temperature water and Harry spent probably close to an hour w me explaining pros and cons for certain types of gear and I never felt pressured to spend more money than I was looking to spend. He will sit and answer any question you have until the sun has gone down and it's way past closing time! I can personally attest to it. When I had problems with gear, (caused by my own ineptness), Harry sat with me and explained what I had done wrong and even fixed it for free. Harry also runs a charter that is top-notch. Every time I've gone has been a memorable experience where I was put onto some great fish and got to meet others who enjoy the sport. I will be booking again as soon as I possibly can. I went to Harry's shop when I first started in the sport. He's location is convenient and stocks a good amount of gear. My first impression of him as I walked around the shop is that he's not a humble person. I had a lot of questions but the answers had an arrogant tone and a 'what? don't you know?' attitude. Since I was under a budget, he didn't seem to like that. So after I asked if he had a cheaper dive sock, he said 'this one is cheaper, can you handle that?'. I don't own a shop nor had retail experience, but I know that's not how you talk to customers. A couple of weeks later the sock broke, which he claimed it was the best. I was pretty careful about wearing them but he didn't seem to care. Later on, I regretfully bought a pair of fins with his advise, which turned out to be too soft. My friend, who bought the same fins, complained and the response he got was 'ohh you must have outgrown them because your so good now'. Really? I've witnessed guys who have bought all their gear at once from his shop, dropping 1,400+. I certainly see a different attitude (including smiles) when he encounters people with deep pockets. Which I understand; money talks. But is that the impression you want to give you customers? I think not. I know he also takes people out to dive on his boat. What I've heard is that he'll tell you to scout the edge of the kelp for White Sean Bass, while he goes for the middle of the kelp bed. Because of my experience with him and my friends experience with him, I've since boycotted this shop. Sucks because other stores don't have the selection he has but I've managed without him. My recommendation is to go to him for knowledge, which by the way is extensive, but take your business to Dive n Surf or buy it online. read more

I was looking to spearfish for a year and couldn't find anyone to do it with so found this shop. Harry (owner) takes this sport seriously and comes of as a serious dude but once you get to know him, he's a great friend to have and gives you invaluable advice. His wife is amazingly sweet and helpful in the shop as well. I have tried going off with other guys from shore after learning from him and prefer going on his boat because he is way more knowledgeable and you don't waste your time going to the wrong spots and he keeps helping me out every time I go. I'm happy with the equipment I bought and I wouldn't recommend going cheap when dealing with the ocean because comfort is everything when you're trying to focus on everything else down there. read more

I really wanted to be a fan of FreeDive and Spear. I like supporting local businesses. I want to have a well stocked shop in my area. But this shop taught me that customer service is not to be taken for granted. I am willing to forego the convenience that the location of this shop offers for better customer service, even if that means driving an hour to Orange County. I went to this shop for just over 6 years. I have spent thousands of dollars here. I got two top of the line wetsuits, roughly 550 each and tons of other gear: reels, bands, floatline, you name it. I can unequivocally say that I have never had an enjoyable experience at this shop. I have been insulted, belittled, and poorly treated every time I have gone to the shop. I have been told ridiculous stuff like "you don't have the body type of a freediver" when I went to buy a wetsuit. For reference, I'm 5'11", 170 lbs, and probably 8-10% body fat. On another occasion, I went in with the intention of buying a mask. I knew exactly what type of mask I wanted; I had owned one before. Harry told me that the mask was not right for my face and that I would not be able to return it if I didn't like it. I bought the mask just to spite him and I love that thing. I could go on. I think the fact that a large number of reviews are hidden and are not factored into this shop's rating is very telling. Mine will probably be hidden as well when he employs Yelp's scrubbing service next. Avoid this shop. read more

I was confused as to how to rate FreeDive & Spear, but I ended up with two stars = "Meh. I've experienced better" as per Yelp. Here is why... Harry is super knowledgable and they have a good selection of geer and everything else you need to get out and spear. The other side is that I feel like they nickel and dime me for every little thing... and I hate that feeling. I'm not rich and I'm not poor... but dang... $10 to make a mono loop (when a kit with 100 yds and 12 crimps costs $15 dollars?)... $25 to install a reel (when all you have to do is drill 2 holes?) I understand you're in Hermosa and rent is expensive, but cut us some slack here buddy. Prices are decent, I would say it has a little "Hermosa" cushion on it, but like I said... nickel and dime so it ends up being expensive. For those reasons, I have to give the buisness 2 stars. It's not bad, product selection is good, and it's great if you aren't worried about money... but if you're a regular Joe like me, you might be better off going to another spearshop (who will help you out and do installs / rigs for free or for a minimal, voluntary tip) or going online and looking for the same thing and doing it yourself. read more

I find some of these reviews pretty harsh. A big WOW what the... I found FreeDive n Spear to be very informative, extremely helpful and friendly. The owners, like me, are immigrants to the U.S. and culturally we have many differences in our social tact and approach to the average American, work in progress :-). I am a great believer in time and patience and visit this store every month or so. I know what I want before going there, call for a price and if it's not for me, I can try and buy elsewhere. However, most stuff I will purchase from FreeDive n Spear as I can actually touch the items physically. A few good examples would be when purchasing masks and fins. I could buy these items online for a few dollars less, but the fact you can try masks on, ensure that there is a good seal, make sure masks are not digging into the bridge of your nose and sit with fins on for 10-15 mins to make sure they are not pinching your feet is key! They have a tremendous selection of dive and spearing gear for sale. I have had nothing but good advice from Harry and thank him for it. I did have issues with a Riffe float line that the stainless ring broke on. I called Riffe immediately, they asked for photos, I sent them. I told them I had two of their float lines of the same design, they offered to pay shipping costs back to them to redo the connections on both lines. I told them I would take care of it if they sent me the parts. Arrived the next day on my doorstep. I add this as I saw one customer complaining about FreeDive n Spear not exchanging what they claimed to be a faulty snorkel. Why should the store be responsible for the defect? Perhaps if you had taken the correct route and communicated that to Riffe, you may have got a replacement from them. Better luck next time. ;-) read more
