I had an amazing experience at Divers West! I have always wanted to scuba but it was a little scary to me, but my teenage son and I decided to do it together. I'm so glad we chose Divers West! The owner Javier is personable and helpful, and I learned so much from him and bought some great gear. (Support your local dive shop!) Our instructors were incredible - we had Mark Kempe for the pool dive instructions, and Emerson Martínez for the ocean dives. Mark has been diving forever it seems and he got us off to a great start. And Emerson has tons of experience and we felt very confident with him in the ocean and at Catalina. Our dive master Reed was fantastic - I confess I got a little panicked in the ocean when water got in my mask as I descended, and Reed came back up with me and got me totally calmed down and talked me through it all, and I was able to descend like a pro. Thank you, Reed! You made all the difference. I feel like a whole new world has opened up to us!! Hint: if you have a big roller bag, bring it instead of the bag you get from Divers West! The gear is so heavy and even though we pay to have it transported on Catalina Island, it was just so heavy to bring from the car onto the ferry, off the ferry to the transport truck, and then back again at the end of the day when you're so tired. Just toss the DW bag with all its gear into the roller bag and you will be so happy. You're gonna love this dive shop! ps I also heard about the group Sole Searchers in Pasadena that meets once a month for dinner and plans bunches of trips together. Fun! read more

I had such an amazing experience with my first time ever diving. Signing up for the class from the website is easy and navigating around the course is simple as well. Even if you are completely new to diving, the courses very well prepare you for what to expect and possible hazards that you could encounter. Some basics: -Get a mask that fits -You'd need to experiment with different fins that match your swimming style. -Get the hose with a valve, you'll need it when youre hitting the real waves. -Buy the boots with the extra layers; your feet and fins will thank you. -Always use defog every time you can because it will fog every time it could. -Remember to breathe. -Have a separate bag for your valuables. My class' instructor was Mark Kempe, and he was the most personable person I've ever interacted with. He loves talking about VR (Half-Life: Alyx) and software - he loves that stuff. He also used to fly planes, ride bikes - pretty much everything - he's done it. Javier, the owner, is such a cool guy too. Tons of fun experience to share and encourages you to join them, too. He likes flight simulator games. haha We started off with 2 days of pool diving. We got familiar with our gear, practice basic skills, we even got to play around with the extra air we have left to get comfortable. Same thing was with day 2 - we picked up where we left off and we just had the rest of the time to continue practicing the skills that we could improve on. Day 3 - it was at Veterans Park, Redondo Beach. It was raining too, and it added to the already fun trip. I felt very comfortable with what ive learned in the pool and i was actually pretty excited for our first open water dive. Got to see an octopus. Remember, to walk on your feet until you cant walk anymore and then put your fins on. Dont be afraid of the open water and stay close with your buddy. Day 4 - CATALINA! When you get to Catalina, USE THE TRANSPORT SERVICE - its SUPER WORTH IT. They will pick up and load one bag and transport it to and from the dive site and they will even store it for you until you are ready to leave - it will save your back and it will save your energy. At the dive site, you dont even have to go far to see the beautiful stuff - its right there when you hit the water! Mark even saw a technical diver with the advance gear and had him show us how it works and how its different. I think that person was a technical level diver and he also explained everything very well. WE GOT TO SEE THE BLACK SEA BASS!!! OMG. I cant wait to make new friends and go on more dives. This opens a whole new world of opportunity and adventure for me, and its only going to get better and more fun from here. read more

The shop is good! Clean and easy to communicate with. I really appreciate their small class sizes, too. And I love that the owner is always willing to chat about equipment and dives. There's a real passion for diving at this shop and it's infectious. Where Divers West really shines is its instructors. I did my open diver certification with my instructor Ron and dive master Jacque. Both Ron and Jacque made me feel safe the entire time. They were also extremely patient and informative while making sure everyone in the class had thoroughly learned their skills. This long overdue five-star review is for Ethan, my instructor during OW certification. Ethan was very thorough during the entire process. We had a small group of four students and were paired with our buddy to practice the skills/exercises in the pool and subsequent ocean dives. Ethan made sure we all completed each skill and made us redo each exercise over if he felt like we did not adequately master it to his expectation. It was hard with some of the skills, but worth it. Each of us students had a skill we were behind in--I remember several students had to do the emergency ascent a few times and my problem area was taking off the mask underwater and blowing out the water. Ethan made me practice blowing the water out of my mask a few extra times, which totally sucked, but I am glad I practiced it because that was something I had to do during a vacation dive a few months later. To complete the OW certification, we spent a good chunk of a weekend morning at Redondo Beach. Paddling to the buoy was probably one of the worst things ever--my underworked legs were about to fall off, water was sooo cold, visibility under water was bad, and I kept thinking FML! There were thousands of itty pelagic crabs, so not much to see. But the next dive was the boat dive to Catalina Island and that was so awesome with all variety of sea life to see and experience. So I guess the takeaway is that I'm happy I was able to get my certification with Ethan, who was firm and made sure we all met his expectations in diving skills. read more

I will never come here again. Ever. The owner was disrespectful throughout the entire visit and showed a complete disregard for my health during the pandemic. My friend and I came to rent gear for the weekend to do a beach dive. Javier, the owner, tried to convince us repeatedly go on a boat trip, when we told him we did not feel safe going on a boat trip during the pandemic he pulled down his mask leaned towards us and loudly said "Oh no." As though trying to infect us. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. When I came back to return the gear he was wearing his mask around his neck, when I pointed out that this was utterly ineffective he grudgingly pulled it up to cover his mouth, but not his nose, and a few minutes later pulled it back around his neck. In addition, throughout all of my interactions with him he implied that my friend and I were bad divers. Asking if we were we sure we could handle a beach dive and saying that we must be under 21 years old. My friend and I are in our late twenties and I am a dive master. I have never been treated so condescendingly in my life. I hope that he does not treat all women with the same level of disrespect and that this dive shop does not become a hot bed for covid given his complete disregard for the recommended health care precautions. read more

I had a great experience at this shop and Javier specifically. He was extremely knowledgeable and did not try to rip me off by pressuring me to buy the expensive stuff. Instead, he talked about the pros and cons of the different items and was an expert about the various types of gear he had at the shop. This was the dive shop where it all started for me. And I can tell you right now this will continue to be "the shop" for me until the day I can no longer go underwater or physically move to a diff state. Why? Very simple. The owner. Very rarely do I come across people selling me something who I can trust with absolute certainty that they are considering my interests and needs and not taking advantage of my limited knowledge. Can you remember the last time you came across such a person? Every time I go into the shop ready to buy something that's overkill or excessive we chit-chat a bit and I tell him why I want what I'm asking for. If my reason is based on faulty knowledge or a misconception, he kindly lets me know (that's the honesty I'm talking about). He even will show me several more affordable alternatives that do the same job for my need/application. I could have walked out of the shop multiple times with hundreds of dollars more of equipment that I didn't need (nor would appreciate), and not been any the wiser. Now that I am more involved with this passion, I am more aware of what I need and what is unnecessary at this time. I look back on those times and appreciate this person's honesty and respect toward me, not even knowing if I would end up a lifelong customer. Now onto the shop and its offerings. Pretty nice selection of gear. There are actually a wide range of items for many budgets here. On the rare occasion I couldn't find something I just ordered it through the shop. They do tank refills here as well - just make sure to bring your certification card. (Reputable dive shops won't fill your scuba tank with compressed air without one. That is how they control self-taught divers from killing themselves.) I actually appreciate this about the shop because it shows a care and responsibility over making a quick buck. Classes. Everything taught here is under the PADI banner (which is what I personally was looking for). There are plenty of courses offered and there is TRANSPARENCY with the pricing. You are not going to get tricked here. What is covered in the price of the course is explained in all my experiences. Shop also has a finger on the pulse of some local dive boats, just inquire. It's a great way to meet new people and make new friends in the area. For the young people my age who may never have had a relationship with (meaning, supporting/buying from) their local anything-store, it should go without saying, but there are just certain benefits to doing so that you can't get from shopping at giant, impersonal, corporations like Amazon or Big 5. Have you ever tried this guy's bread? Seriously, he bakes his own bread. Would Jeff Bezos share his bread with you? Probs not. But Javier will! I think... Wow. Greeted by the owner with a level of total disrespect for me as a customer. Rude from the get go and giving me such a hard time about filling my tank. I came in to fill a tank in an emergency situation. I'm PADI certified but didn't have my card on me. Never has this been a problem in my 17 years of diving. It was a problem apparently. I travel a lot so I use a passport for primary identification, about as official as it gets. Unfortunately not so with Javier. He said something seemed fishy. I grabbed my stuff and left. Javier the shop owner greeted me and spent a solid 20 minutes with me answering all my questions and educating me on as much as he possibly could. I highly recommend this dive shop to anyone in the surrounding area :) This store has only been established for about a year, so it's better to consider quality rather than quantity when it comes to Yelp reviews. I had roughly 4 weeks to get my advanced open water certification, and luckily Brad was able to squeeze me in, though the next advanced OW classes weren't scheduled until after my trip to the Philippines. The entire process went smoothly, from scheduling my pool session, to scheduling my weekend of boat dives, to buying my equipment from the shop, to getting my temporary PADI certification card emailed to me immediately upon finishing my dives. The staff at Divers West does an incredible job of making sure that you, as a student, are prepared. They assess your skills and work on whatever issues you may have. They scramble for wetsuits when you show up to the boat without yours (..oops) and make sure you're okay when you get super seasick on the boat. They also stress that safety is of the utmost importance. I've had several dive masters who are impatient to descend, but I never got that vibe from Bradley, Nathan or Conrad. It's all about what you, as the student, are comfortable with. I came to Divers West for my PADI OW certification on a recommendation from a friend and I couldn't have been happier with my experience here! Brad is phenomenal and everything you could want from a dive shop owner: professional, friendly, caring, thorough, detailed and passionate about the sport. His communication was excellent...my availability and schedule were very hectic and he was always patient with me and discussed my options for which class to take. I was finally able to get into a class in December. Yeah! We were able to have more than 1 instructor teach us in the classroom sessions which I found valuable to get information from different teaching styles. We also had 2 separate instructors for the pool sessions which I found just as valuable. All the instructors were patient, knowledgeable and dedicated to the students. I always felt safe, respected and in good hands. This is a fun sport but also a dangerous one and I appreciated the time and care that went into every aspect of the instruction. The weather didn't really cooperate with us for our 4 Open Water dives so we had to schedule around mother nature. Conrad was our open water instructor (he also did the 2nd pool day with us) and I couldn't have asked for a better instructor. I am so happy that Divers West opened in Pasadena. I needed a refresher course and had been contacting Sport's Chalet for months (even stopped in person) to try to set up a class and couldn't get them to contact me back. I happend to be driving by on Rosemead and saw the dive flag and walked in. They were so helpful and friendly. I was able to set up a class right away. The class portion of the refresher course went well and quickly, the pool portion gave me a bit of trouble. Both Carolyn and Nathan, were amazing and very patient with me. They let me get over my anxiety of being back under water after a five year break with out pushing me or making me feel bad about it. I felt horrible making them stay past my schedule class time but Nathan assured me, he was in no rush and that his priority was getting me reacquainted with my diving skills. I can't thank them enough for helping me get back in the water. I was able to go diving in Epcot's Dive Quest the following week and it was amazing!! I plan on taking more classes with them!! I couldn't be happier to have found Divers West. Learning to scuba dive has been a lifelong dream of mine, and Divers West made it so easy to get certified and geared up that I'm kicking myself for not having done it sooner! Brad has spent a lot of time explaining all of the ins and outs of different gear as well as features, benefits, and drawbacks. No pressure! I recently purchased my first BCD from him and got exactly what I wanted. Dave was my OOW instructor, and I sincerely appreciated his knowledge and patience. He didn't cut any corners and made sure that everyone in the class understood and was competent in their skills before moving on. Well I can tell you that I have had great experience with this dive shop from ever encounter i have had. I have also read the bad reviews and they all seem like typical upset people that don't really have a leg to stand on. No dvie shop should fill tanks for someone without a Cert Card, unless they know them personally. So from my view this is one more reason to trust the integrity of a dive shop than to bad mouth it. The guy with the bad check is all over the place with crazy stories. I read all the reviews of this place before singing up for the Open water class, and the advanced open water class. Both experiences were excellent. The instructors were great, amazingly patient and so engaged. The pool is right down the street from the shop and makes the class and pool sessions super easy. The boat trips we took with each class were very well coordinated and wonderful experiences. I can't recommend a more safe or accommodating environment to get started diving. I can personally say that Javier is no sugar coating softy and he is better for it. His responsibility is to keep you alive and keep you safe. The primary objective of every dive is to come back safe, and he takes that seriously. read more

Warning avoid this shop by all means! This shop has lousy customer service and has a mark up of 10% on their items compared to other dive shops in the area. I brought my regulator in to have it checked out before a dive. Bradley, didn't even bother to replace the battery in my regulator, but he didn't mind charging me $35 for the gear check. One of the rudest, least professional places I have been in my life. My friend and I rented gear from here once before, but had limited interactions, so felt comfortable renting again. Unfortunately, this was not the case. When I called on the phone to verify that they were still renting gear, given the pandemic, I also asked for recommendations for beach diving locations in SoCal. Immediately, I was told that beach diving was not worth it and that a real diver would just go on a boat - to which I responded saying I was not comfortable with that given covid-19, and the conversation ended. When we went to pick up our gear, the owner (Javier) greeted us and was extremely condescending. He implied that we did not know how to dive (both my friend and I grew up with boats and diving) and that as women, we were less skilled. Appalling, to say the least. We again were told that we should go on a (cramped) boat trip with them, and let us know that we were "overreacting" to the pandemic, even taking his mask off mid conversation to make his point. When we returned the gear, we were charged $20 for missing weights, which we never received in the first place. We will not be returning here, which is a huge disappointment, as we both love to dive and wanted this to be our neighborhood spot. Oh well. read more

I have been scuba certified since 2008, but it had been several years since my last dive. I was planning a trip to Belize and wanted to brush up my skills to make sure I was ready for the dives I wanted to go on. I took the PADI scuba refresher course with Nathan at Divers West and couldn't be happier with it. Nathan was friendly, patient, and had a great sense of humor that made it easy to relax and remember everything. I enjoyed my experience, and I feel completely confident about my Belize dives coming up next week. Highly recommended. My husband signed up himself, my 15 year your old daughter and me for the PADI Open Water Diver course in preparation for our upcoming trip to Bali. I was initially reluctant to try scuba diving, but my daughter really wanted me to join her in the water so I agreed to take the class. The classwork was fine--no problem--but I had a panic attack at the first confined dive/pool session when I couldn't get through the mask-clearing exercise. I told myself scuba diving wasn't for me. Brad, the owner, didn't pressure me, but encouraged me to take some time to think about it, and even said he'd give me an individual lesson if necessary. After some long discussions with friends and family, I decided to give it another try. Luckily for me, Carolyn, Brad's wife, joined us in the pool to give me additional moral support. I couldn't be happier to have found Divers West. I found the transition from Sport Chalet to Divers West to be one of the best moves I have done in a while. The customer service is top notch. They where quick and efficient with taking care of my annual tank hydro and visual inspection when I took my tanks in yesterday, not to mention they did a methodical job on my 1st stage on of my tanks. Ever have that one expensive hobby you absolutely LOVE, and want to credit that one person/persons for getting you into it? Well Bradley @ Divers West is that person. Wanting to go diving during the Xmas/NYE season down in the Caribbean with some diving friends--I was the only one that was NOT certified. Having called around all the local dive shops, who all seemed to be "out of season" and/or not doing classes, Bradley was the ONLY one that stepped up to the plate and put time aside to give me personal confined water lessons. Granted it cost a bit more than a regular class, but I was able to complete both my eLearning AND confined water dives within the week--and I was able to do a "Referral Out" to complete my 4 open water dives in the nice 80deg+ waters in the Caribbean and was Open Water Certified the same week. I was able to dive with my friends during my trip--and was beyond-happy. Though what I did was not what regular divers do (1.5 week crash course)--but I want to push myself to make it happen--and Bradley @ Divers West understood my needs and was able to accommodate. I also did my AOW with Conrad (the other instructor), who is also VERY knowledgeable. If you ever want to hear stories, this man is the man to talk to. I feel very comfortable dealing with these guys, and they will have no problem chatting with you or giving you some real HONEST advice in what you need (as opposed to just making you spend money like some other shops).
