Can't say enough good things about Spear America, and specifically Noah. Came back from a trip to Mexico where a local shop had installed the wrong spear tip on my speargun. The gun was unusable for the entire trip. Total disaster. When I got home, I reached out to Spear America and Noah immediately diagnosed the issue, identified the correct spear, and went a step further. He swapped out the incorrect European tip so I wasn't stuck paying twice to get the job done right. That kind of service is rare. He didn't have to do it. He chose to. This duffel bag "fits the longest fins on the market" and yet requires you to bend the fins pictured HEAVILY to barely be able to smash them into the bag, which is not worth it if you dropped 700+ on the fins, took the time to glue them, and care about your gear. The company informed me that this is NOT false advertising as the material "stretches". It really does not stretch very much at all. They are false advertising and due to the lack of oversight, I would double check anything they claim on the site because they will not reimburse you for their errors. And they think (due to their huge ego) that customers want to smash their gear into this p.o.s. duffel bag instead of buying one that fits appropriately. What a waste. read more

Found this place when searching for scuba gear. I'm a newer diver, so wasn't familiar with options. While this isn't a dive shop, there are a lot of items that cross over and according to Colin (who was super helpful), many divers will use free dive gear because it's more flexible and comfortable. Pricing was fair; more so with my military discount. The bonus is the planes flying just overhead in and out of John Wayne. Hands-down the best source to go to for spearfishing gear and knowledge. Whether you are just starting out or looking to upgrade your gear, these guys will know what you need. I've been coming here for my gear for the last 3 or so years and both Petros (the owner) and the staff are incredible. Everybody is super down to earth, but also knowledgeable. In other words, you know when you walk into a specialized store, and you don't really know what you're looking for, and the people there treat you like a moron? THAT WON'T HAPPEN HERE lol On the other hand, if you are already super knowledgeable, this is still the place you want to go to for gear. You won't find anyone here that doesn't know what they are talking about and their products are geared specifically toward spearfishing. Every once in a while, you might walk into a dive shop (usually geared toward scuba diving) and the people there either don't know what they are talking about in regard to spearfishing/freediving, or they'll try to upsell you on something that you know isn't worth what they're asking for. Again, that won't happen here. Several times, I've been sold on something that was cheaper than the product I was considering, because the staff is honest and genuinely wants you to get what you're looking for. I was in the market for a new pair of carbon fins and this was the closest shop with cetma mantra and swing footpockets that I wanted to try on. Elizabeth and Petros were very helpful, knowledgeable, and just all around great people to converse with while I was shopping. Ended up leaving with way more items then planned but super happy with everything. I can't recommend this shop enough. Don't let those few posted negative reviews concern you. This shop is great, and you won't be disappointed. Rented some gear a few weeks ago and was helped by Devin. Had a chance to chat with the owner Petros that time and again yesterday when I brought a buddy. I'm hoping to start this new hobby and get me some lobster & fish! My experience with Petros actually started at my first OC Spearos meeting and figured since I'm new to this sport, need a guiding hand on what to and not to do and purchase. What I appreciate is that Petros will explain, quite frankly WHY a certain piece of equipment works, their advantage and disadvantages. Sure, he's a business owners, but I feel he's an ocean lover first. It's really in his best interest to maintain a healthy, knowledgeable customer base. Sure, I can go to amazon and purchase something and save $10, $20.... but I'd rather go to his shop, get his expertise and purchase something from his store; especially in the beginning stages of a hobby. As in all outdoor activity, your equipment plays a HUGE role in if you're going to enjoy diving (or camping, or snowboarding....etc.). One thing to keep in mind is that Petros really cares, but he's kinda direct. If you're not accustomed to hearing things "is as", there's a possibility that you maybe offended. Please know that's just some of the difference in people. Some people are really really nice... but never get to the point. Some people get to the point and forget to be nice. Just keep that in mind, appreciate that Orange County has a diving expert to get you into the water, safely, for all to enjoy. read more

Went in here to check out a second wood gun for my arsenal. The owner Petros was extremely rude and told me my gun I just bought was a piece of crap (simply because I didn't get it from his shop) and than continued to insult my knowledge of guns. A lot of this gear is hard to find or not available and because of Petros, us Americans can get access to the good stuff from Europe. I was slightly skeptical before ever going here. I have been freediving for a while now and have friends that are dedicated spear fisherman. Over the last few months I have been borrowing guns, and now the time has come to buy my own. Walking into the shop was a great experience. Spear America is well laid out, clean and organized. There were a few other customers in already so while waiting I was walking around looking at the guns. After about 5 mins Petros came to me and asked if i need help. When I told him what I was looking for he took the time to walk me thru the decision process and differences of the guns I was looking at. I decided on a Picasso Magnum carbon 105 with a Rob Allen reel and an extra shaft. After the gun was Rigged and the extra shaft set up, Petros asked if I knew how to load and run the shooting line, I kinda of had an idea but wasn't 100% sure, He took more time to show me and even gave me a correction on what I was doing wrong all this time. I'm a newbie to free diving and spearfishing, slowly piecing my gear together. I've been to the store a couple times poking around, and there are always reps around that are willing to let me pick their brain about the basic stuff I will need. This place has great stuff. I finally picked out a snorkel and mask and when I tried it out in the ocean it was too small. Gave it another try in the pool and it definitely was not the right fit. I brought it back and met Petros and explained the situation. I was a little embarrassed to ask if I could exchange it, but he knew right away it was a wrong fit for my face and didn't have any issues helping me find a mask that fit properly. I decided to replace my rather worn out snorkeling mask & chose Spear America because the large corporate sporting goods stores do not let the customer try on the masks. The store had a large selection. It was apparent to me that each mask was of better quality than any that I had previously used to snorkel. Hi Gang. I'm a free diver that decided to fulfill on a bucket list of spearfishing for an upcoming trip to New Zealand/Australia. As an engineer who "over" plans/prepares/researches, I did as much research as I could over the web about the equipment: guns, gloves, float lines, etc. I had 1-2 weeks of knowledge to ask different shops technical questions. My next step...gather knowledge from experienced people and make my purchases. Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, it was convenient to start with a shop in Sacramento. I gave them a call and asked very basic questions. Let me tell you...they were very inpatient and kept pointing me in the wrong direction with no convincing reasons after asking "why?". I felt like I was talking to a used car sales man who is passionate about making a deal, not the car itself. I made some more phone calls...Spear America. The greek guy on the phone was very helpful. I decided to drive down to Irvine (on the way pitstop during my road trip) and visit the store. HOLY COW! A wealth of technical information and experience!!! There's no price tag you can put with the patience and thorough testing these guys have! Dr. Petros spent 4 straight hours do much more than helping decide what's best...HE'S SHARING HIS PASSION, EXPERIENCE, AND OBJECTIVE KNOWLEDGE! He tests, repairs, and designs parts for products he sells. He'll sell his competitors products because he'll admit they are better and why certain features make it better. He tells you the particular, overlooked items you will need for your objective and will tell you WHY!
