Looking in from the sidewalk, this bar reminded me of several bars in NYC and that's when we realized we needed to stop in for drinks after our show. Unfortunately, when we returned the bar was quite full and very much focused on the UNC basketball game, so we pulled up to the stools along the window and ordered our drinks. Although room is tight, it was a comfortable and friendly environment, they even had an extensive selection of games, to include many board games. The bartender was an absolute sweetheart and didn't skip a beat. We finally saw a vacancy at the bar continued drinks from there. This great little neighborhood bar makes it easy to sit and meet new people, play a few games and enjoy a few drinks, what more could you ask for? Cheers! read more

It's been awhile since I was in and glad to say it's still the same cool , good vibe bar it was . It's small but mighty on drink selection and great bartender Kayla . Came here with a friend and we loved this bar! It's small, but very cute. The bartender was very nice, and the prices were very cheap. Our favorite part of the bar was that they had a lot of games you can play. We stayed here for a few hours playing games, and we had so much fun! Super tiny bar on Franklin Street that was full of regulars until we newbies stopped in on this Saturday night. There was even a self-proclaimed "Norm" there, who could put down some booze! Don't think they get many wine drinkers as my Chardonnay was terrible, but they did find a decent bottle of red. Husband found Woodford, so that made him happy. Favorite part for me was the Trouble game! I used to love that game, but hadn't played it in years. Fun! read more

I love this bar!!!! It's entire patron area is about 300sqft. With being that close to your neighbor you would think it would be uncomfortable but it isn't. Everyone is super nice and makes you feel right at home. I stopped in for a football game, decked in rival gear and was greeted like family. The bartender went out of his way to make sure I had the most bang for my buck and even hooked me up with some tailgate swag. If you are looking for cosmos and lemontinis this probably isn't the bar for you (even though they'll make 'em). But if you like simplicity with good people and great whiskey definitely stop by, you won't regret it. read more

The Blue Horn Lounge is a great place to grab a quick and semi-casual drink, but definitely not a place where I would spend an entire evening. The decor is naturally UNC-related, but it's still pretty elegant. There are a few barstools directly to the right of the entrance that face the window and it's kind of fun to sit and watch people walking by. Every time I've been there there bartenders were friendly and professional. It really is a tiny bar - more than 20 or so people in there at once would be crowded. There is only one toilet, but it's a very nice restroom. They've gone non-smoking somewhat recently, which is great because the ventilation just wasn't strong enough before. Overall it's a nice place to occasionally have a drink or two, but just not large or comfortable enough to be a whole lot more. read more

Spent Saturday morning of NC ND football game at the Blue Horn great place to hang out at! Bartender was the best drink was never empty makes a mean Bloody Mary bar was loaded with ND fans and everyone was having a blast! The NC fans made the ND fans feel at home was a great time by all! An amazing experience on so many levels. Best dive in chapel hill. Upon walking in, this bar feels like "home". And Zane made us feel like family. Zane went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and appreciated to be there. The selection is amazing and his recommendations were on point. In fact, I wish I lived here just so I could be a regular. I have traveled extensively and consistently and it's rare to find a place that just *feels* so right, but this is the place, and Zane is one of the best bartenders I've come across in my past 10 years of traveling seeking a genuine "dive". You know if you blinked while walking down Franklin St in Chapel Hill, there's a slight chance you'd miss the facade for Blue Horn Lounge. But don't miss this chance to go to a great little bar near the UNC campus if you get to visit. Some may say "hole in the wall" type of bar, well, sure it's not much wider than the actual bar is itself and about the same length. But it's got some quality bar atmosphere and attitude packed in a small footprint. It's just one of those places that it's comfortable to grab a barstool and hang out with someone for drinks. The bartender (another Chip actually, we are just everywhere these days), the other patrons, everyone seemed to be having a great time. Some were even playing this Shut The Box type of dice game on the bar while enjoying their drinks. There was a lot of activity for the small space and it was all great to take in. The amazing thing was it wasn't overcrowded really, just the right number of patrons to keep it interesting but not claustrophobic on a Thursday night. Chip the bartender kept my companion and me well served with drinks and was great to talk to, thumbs up for great service. And another thing, the bathroom...that was NICE! It's like a whole other world, a artsy kind of slate tile world in there. Just not expected, sorry, and worth mentioning. Nice bathrooms are always worth mentioning. Bottom line: Give this little place a shot. It may seem like a hole in the wall but there's a lot to enjoy in that little footprint as I mentioned before. Good staff interactions, fun patrons, and a pretty cool and clean bathroom as a bonus. I am a fan! read more

This dive bar is so great! Small location so not good for big groups, but perfect for 3 or 4 people. Crowd of people is older than the Franklin street undergrad crowd which is nice depending your age Drink specials for both cocktails and beer. I am not a whiskey drinker at all but tried their gold rush...jack/lemon/honey.....delicious! They also have Great Lakes beer with Christmas Ale to come in the winter!! Service is great and friendly. Bar also has a console for games like photo hunt as well as board games that you can pull out and play. Overall cozy, boozy dive bar...Will def be back! read more

The Blue Horn Lounge has a unique charm. It's small, has tinted windows, and does seem a little uninviting. But once you go inside, it's not too bad. It's a little dark, but otherwise it seems like a nice place to grab a drink while waiting for a bus at the Varsity. That being said, I have no idea how they would have musical events here, as it is incredibly small. read more

Blue Horn is the best example of "your local neighborhood bar" I've ever been to. I grew up in Chapel Hill, but don't live there anymore, but came home for Christmas last December. My friends and I randomly stumbled into Blue Horn one night and ended up going there every night after. Tim, the owner, was tending bar every night and we became friends with him the first night. One night he asked us what we wanted the special to be the next day. We said Jager, and the next night, Jager shots were on special. Consistently doing things like this is what make the place so special. Instead of playing the radio or some random CD, they had a computer hooked up to one of the flatscreens and played music videos (taking requests, of course) most nights. This is the best place to go out on East Franklin if you're not in college anymore. read more

This place rocks. The bartender are really easy going and are really good company. It's cozy and feels like drinking at home. It's a great place to stay all night or just to stop in for a quick drink on ur way to the game without being surrounded by children who can't hold their liquor. This tiny bar & lounge is just in the downtown Chapel Hill area on Franklin Street. It has super tinted black glass on the windows & doors, which keeps it "night like" even on bright sunny afternoons. It's a small space, but it's really classy inside; there's seating at the bar and there are some side tables as well. You'll find that they'll have bands playing in here on many nights & the music is great to stop in and listen to and chat with friends. The service is excellent, ask for Rose, she's awesome and she's the master bartender, she knows how to make a superb drink. read more

Blue Horn Lounge is probably the smallest bar in Chapel Hill, which doesn't fare well for an establishment that has live music almost every night. When there is a band there, it takes up about 1/3 of the available space, leaving the max occupancy somewhere around 15. I find the drinks overpriced for the quality, and it is sometimes hard to get to the bar as people try to cram in. Since it is the former Katie's pretzels remodeled, it is nice on the inside, with one of the nicest bathrooms I've seen in a bar or restaurant. On a dead night, it might be nice, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Way back when they hosted bands, I played here one night. What a cool vibe. The owner could not have been more enthusiastic and the staff & crowd was warm, friendly and just awesome. I don't know exactly how to express this. I was a regular for years and now am banned because I accidentally left an $11 tab when I moved out of town. The bar manager is unscrupulous. Moreover the beer is overpriced, and the toilet doesn't flush well. Often they have no toilet paper, many times, while I was welcome there, I was asked to "run down to the store" for toilet paper, lemons, whatever the f**k they were out of. Or to take their recycling out. This bar garnered a good reputation because of a bar tender who used to work there, but has been on a decline since that person left. It is now little more than an exclusive club for university employees and over funded frat boys. Most times the only people in the bar are over 60, so the atmosphere could be accurately described as "dusty". I will not lie, I am a little salty, but as I will not lie everything contained herein is truth. read more

I think this little bar is the coolest place on east franklin street. Yeah it's small [holds 40 people not 15 like some suggested] but it reminds my of a downtown Manhattan or any big city Pub. Upscale and much more classy than the other bars downtown you just have to give it a try. Great place for the over 30 crowd and the live music is some of the best in town and it is free with a $1.00 annual membership. Drinks are really good but a little more expensive because they are in real glasses and nicely garnished. Music is free and the place is the cleanest around with the nicest bathroom in town. Good lord, how have I not posted a review for this place yet! We lived in CH for a little more than 5 years and this became our regular place, then after a while, our home away from home. The staff treats you like family and the regular patrons are always welcoming. It was nice to find a place on Franklin that catered to a more mature crowd as opposed to being overrun with undergrads. We often ordered in food and ate right at the bar on nights that I closed the home kitchen. This place is a rare find...how often do the bartenders give out hugs to regulars upon arrival?! The coolest bar in Chapel Hill. Its like going to a party at someone's house, BYOB. Don't be afraid if you don't know anyone, trust me after your first beer you will know everyone, or soon will. It's like Cheers. A great crowd of regulars, who happen to be great friends in and out of the bar. If you are gone for more than 3 or 4 days, someone may look for you! Some extremely nice bartenders, extremely nice people. Its a fun place, and don't let looks deceive you. The bartenders do not put up with any crap, which is a good thing.
