Every college town needs a place like this, a casual little cafe that pours strong brewed coffee into a heavy mug (you don't have to get the Americano or an espresso the coffee is solid if that is what you want), and some casual food on the side. Watch the kids come in and get coffee and a muffin and snap open their computers and settle in for a session, or bring in parents to show them a slightly sanitized version of college life, or just have desultory conversations while sipping coffee and flipping through books or whatever. Blue Moose is one of a kind - it is the antithesis of a chain restaurant experience. First all of the coffee drinks (including the shakes) are wonderful as they should be for a coffee club. Come in a night and there is likely to be live music. The menu however is fairly limited and seems more limited now the in the past. The bagels and lox platter Is enjoyable for a quiet lazy Sunday. Two of us came here for breakfast this morning. I love the tarot card order holders. We ordered two things but only got one-- I had to go back and request the second bagel. The bagel and lox that I had was pretty good. The bagels are OK but not NYC good. (I am spoiled in the bagel department...) The coffee was great and the plant forest in back is pretty impressive. Check out the 6-7-foot cactus in the back. The women's bathroom is a little weird-- you have to go back outside to wash your hands. I like the overall shabby chic thing going on here, however, the emphasis seems more on the shabby though the prices are chic. ;-) read more

Perfect Sunday morning brunch spot downtown before heading to the airport. Two options for quiche--the veggie one was great (bacon and Gouda was the other). Very light, despite the large size, with a very soft crust. The side of fruit was more like a bite or two but I'd still order again. The coffee bar options were plentiful with several drip options (Nicaraguan Segovia and a Rwanda variety among them). I went with a decaf Orange Mocha that was rich and creamy. The guys I came with were happy with the oatmeal loaded with berries and the chicken salad wrap. Menu offers something for everybody, with huevos rancheros and waffles on the breakfast menu, sandwiches, and several salads that I would have ordered if I wasn't looking for breakfast. The baked goods on the counter were super tempting, enough so to make me get a homemade Nutter Butter cookie for the road! Came back to Blue Moose after an intentional hiatus, determined to give it a second try. The taps were all frozen (it was 73 degrees outside); they were out of strawberries and mangoes; and even though I only wanted coffee, I had to buy a muffin to reach the $5 minimum on card purchases. I hate this because their muffins are not good. I dislike the minimum card purchase rule on principle - but I dislike it even more when the total comes to $4.97 and suddenly there's no problem. The limit is arbitrary and absurd. I realize it costs money to have card accessibility, but just work the costs into the price like any other business. And if you're going to make a ridiculous rule, at least enforce it. It's like this place doesn't even try. The apathy of its employees is remarkable, matched only by the haphazard stocking of their supplies. This is not the first time they've run out of things on their menu, and if I come back again, I'm sure it won't be the last. I'll hold to my original review sentiments: decent coffee, good music, and a true coffee culture environment. For all those positives, however, showing a little bit of concern for its patrons would go a long way in encouraging future business. I love local businesses and I want Blue Moose to do well. My roommate and I arrived at about 10:30 AM on a Saturday morning. There were enough parking spaces around the cafe and it was fairly busy inside but we were able to get seats. The cafe has a cozy and intimate atmosphere. You order at the counter and take an animal picture to your table. Someone will bring your order to you. Btw, the lunch items are available starting at 11 AM and credit card for purchases over $5. I really enjoyed my almond froth coffee and I thought it was just the right temperature for me. That being said, I have a low tolerance for heat on my tongue so if you like your coffee scorching hot, you need to know I have completely different standards. I would come back to get this again and to try the multiple other beverage options. As for the breakfast burrito, I was expecting a flimsy McDonald's looking burrito. Nope! The breakfast burrito here was enormous and bigger than my bicep! But if I flex, then it is just about the same size as my bicep. Small locally owned coffee shop nestled comfortable in downtown Morgantown. This is a favorite amongst locals and I can definitely see why. Very Austin, TX like with a strong hipster feel. Got up on a Sunday morning looking for breakfast in downtown Morganstown. We were in the area for a wedding and the hotel didn't offer much. First three places I identified on Yelp were closed. With limited options, I headed here to grab a muffin. No hello or anything as I walked in. Headed to counter and asked for a muffin to go. Told there was a 5% surcharge for using a card for under $5. Boo. Can't do anything because I didn't have cash. Paid nearly $4 for a muffin. Got back and there is no napkin or knife. Ugh. Muffin was fine. Could have gone to a grocery store and gotten the same quality. No other option in downtown, so plus one star for being opened. read more

Went here last weekend for brunch. Had a waffle, scrambled eggs, home fries, and toast. I thought the food was good but the one thing I have against the place is the cleanliness. I don't know if it was do to the business on a weekend at brunch time, but it didn't seem like any staff was managing the dining area, and pretty much every table was dirty. My friend and I just picked the least dirty and wiped it down with a napkin, but its seems like one of those places where you don't want your silverware to touch the table because it just might hit a sticky or wet spot left from a previous customer. read more

What's most appealing about Blue Moose is that it's a cute, little, locally-owned coffee shop where musicians can perform at the stage. The lattes are great - my personal preference and suggestion is to serve the coffee in mugs for customers eating in rather than disposable cups (it'll make the service feel more friendly and less "grab-and-go"). Lighting inside was a bit dark but otherwise ambience was nice. What I was surprised about was their hours on Wednesday ends at 11pm, but they started closing up at 9. There aren't many cafes in Morgantown open until that late so I wish my friend and I could have stayed longer rather than relocating. The Blue Moose is one of my favorite coffee spots in Morgantown. The coffee is always delicious, the food is great and the atmosphere is calm and quiet. It was one of my favorite study spots as a student. The only reason I can't give this place five stars is because of the service. The baristas always seem angry, unfriendly and quite honestly, rude. Depends coffee is coffee don't get me wrong and most of the time it should only be drip, don't blame me for wanting better, but crafted coffee is skill, there are tutorials. Besides the mocha joke of the day I just made, there breakfasts are so bomb. Oatmeal is the dankest in town, and quiches are very good. A variety of good espresso and non-coffee options. Groovy alternative vibe, and lots of good veggie options for breakfast and lunch. I worked on my laptop after lunch for a while along with half the coffeeshop, which was nice, and I walked by later that day in the evening and saw there was live music. The food and atmosphere are wonderful, but the service we had was even better. Stopping in yesterday for the excellent coffee and delicious, affordable food I had come to expect from earlier visits, I happily enjoyed the hummus plate and my cup of joe, as usual. My family was visiting with me, and my kids gobbled up the granola with yogurt and honey (even as my daughter suggested less honey would be better) and my husband happily plowed through his smoked-salmon-and-cream-cheese bagel. The service had been friendly and attentive, as well as laid-back; we were feeling relaxed and happy. Then my son, Atticus, who has Down syndrome and autism, left the table and approached the counter. What could he be doing? we wondered. Should we go after him? Was he going to get in the way? Atticus made himself taller by stepping onto the foot rest under the counter, and the barista, who already had served us kindly and well, turned a 1,000-watt smile on my boy and began talking to him and, even more important, listening to him. We couldn't hear the conversation, but apparently the barista got an answer because he grabbed a cup and filled it with ice and water and handed it to my son. This was the first time Atticus has asked for anything from a server in a restaurant, at least in part because folks don't usually listen and wait long enough for him to formulate an answer. Had a good time with my family. We were a little confused at first when we sat down and didn't get serviced. Didn't know that we needed to order from the counter but that was no big deal. Ordered a BLT and it was absolutely perfect. It fit into my hands well and had me feeling full. Bacon was cooked just right and the lettuce and tomato were fresh. Toast wasn't burnt either. It came with chips and salsa. Those were fairly decent as well. My husband and mother both had the Cajun shrimp burrito and they were a little underwhelmed. Said the Cajun was mostly Dijon mustard with some cayenne spice. 4/5 because the direction of the seating/service wasn't as straightforward as I believe it needed to be. Don't be fooled by the pictures of food on this site for the Blue Moose. All they offer are some bagels and a few continental offerings. We're visiting from out of town, looking at houses to relocate into the Morgantown area. We drove to the downtown area and stopped in to grab a bite. . .hoping for a nice breakfast, as the pictures show. It's during the week of WVU Spring Break. . .so nothing is crowded, including this restaurant. As we walked in, we were surprised to see some biscottis and only a couple of muffins in a cake display. We stood at the counter for a moment waiting for the counter person to acknowledge our existence while she made coffee for the ONE customer in front of us. As we tried to catch her attention to ask if they did, indeed, make full breakfasts like the online menu suggests. . .she brushed us off and pointed to the upright plastic menu with 4 items typed up on a piece of paper. "That's what we've got"! Anyway, we went to sit down at a 4 top in the front. . .sat there for about 5 minutes, again, without any recognition of our existence. When we went to leave and said "goodbye", still NO acknowledgement. SO we took a nice stroll 3 blocks down to ZEKE's and had a fabulous time! That's my next review...5 stars! read more

I've had my ups and downs here. Coffee is good. My food is usually good. The chili will be spicier some days than others. I like how they use actual fresh cut fruit, not the stuff that comes in a bucket that's all slimey and disgusting. The keish's I've got in the past have always been great. The staff is VERY hit or miss. The guy that works there currently with the thick framed glasses, he is so nice. Always in a fantastic mood. Really starts my day off right having coffee and a smile. Usually I get the rudest baristas ever. They don't care. They want you to know they don't care. I cringe when I walk in and don't see the guy working (some of the women are alright but it seems like the nice ones don't last long) For someone that goes in there somewhat regularly (few times a month for the past 7 or so years, ) you'd think that they would be a little nicer being that I leave tips (I've worked in service since I was 15, I tip well, Ive been a waitress, a caterer, a bartender etc) or just the fact I give them business instead of the competitors, The Grind (amazing coffee), Panera, and soon to be Starbucks downtown. If they don't get nicer employees they are going to go downhill as the bigger chains open up around them if they haven't started to already. As far as the credit card minimum goes ($5.00 min purchase) I believe I read that it's a $.50 add on to every receipt now allowing you to have less than $5 purchases. I always bring people here when they've never had it, I always recommend the place. Can we please get a nicer staff?? Also, the atmosphere is nice. Real coffee shop feel. Cool art. read more

Yeah, I' also wishing for a 2.5 star rating. Food is pretty good. Nice vegetarian menu. BUT, service pretty much sucks. Sorry, its true. You definitely get the "i really don't care if you ever come back" attitude. I understand this place is 'cool and laid back'. Fine, I like that. But that doesn't give an excuse for poor service. I also realize that most of the staff is high during work hours, but still, no excuse to disappoint customers. It's another one of those places I really wanna like, but just keep getting let down.
