I just googled this beastly piece of artwork and found this quote from the Rocky Mountain News referencing the unveiling of the sculpture: "'As I was leaving last night, I couldn't stop the tears, it was so beautiful,' said Rudi Cerri, public art administrator for the city of Denver." I understand the tears part... WTF. This thing is an atrocity. Yeah, I'm obviously a horse person. This creature, which I guess is supposed to be a mustang, is an anatomical freakshow. I can't help it -- I love that big, blue horse! At first I thought it was odd and random and scary, frankly, but then I saw it a few more times. Now I wave at it when I drive by. On your way to a flight it serves as the "scary butler" in any kids movie. You know, the one where the kids knock on the big wooden door and it slowly opens with a creak and the butler looks menacing. If you can gulp and run past him into the scary mansion then you get to have an adventure. Making it past the blue bronco is like that, and it's all good on the other side. And when you get home you sneak past it again as it glares in a menacing manner at people just arriving. Awesome! Why someone would choose to scare people on the way to an airport is beyond me. After circling the terminal once more before picking up my roommate from DIA last night, my long-standing belief was clinched: this horse is a work of art. A force of nature. A demon steed from the pits of hell, the likes of which makes citizens of other, inferior cities cower within moments of their arrival in Colorado. And I worship him for it. Every time I drive past this thing, I flash it the horns, sometimes with both hands, putting myself and others in some totally bitchin' peril, albeit briefly. Somehow, whenever I approach DIA, I always seem to hear Metallica's "The Four Horsemen" blaring in the background. When I check my iPod and discover ABBA Gold playing instead, I know it must be true: THIS HORSE HAS PSYCHIC POWERS. And he's a thrash fan. Too much metal for one hoof, baby. Put more simply, when pitted against a certain enormous, 'Jackqueline' Egyptian god of the afterlife, I know which horse I'd bet on. read more

My kid is creeped out by it. My wife thinks I'm a complete nerd for checking in every time we pass this thing. I do it just to make her roll her eyes. And cause it's the weirdest thing on Yelp. I am slightly PRO- Big Blue Demon Bronco. Slightly. It is tasteless, gaudy, oversized, and completely random. It is testosterone personified/ horse-ified, and suits Denver,...er Menver- where all the boys come to play and do extreme sports and bike and ski and get aggressive and riot during sporting events. Colorado is the the capital of school shootings- you wanted a unicorn? I think it fits. When I see its demonic red eyes, I know I am getting close to the airport. On return, I know I am home. This thing is so creepy. But I kinda like it. The red eyes are pretty weird, but make it memorable. It seems fitting as the NFL team here is the Denver "broncos," but I don't remember them having devilish red eyes like this one. When the four horsemen are drawing nigh, Perhaps Chuck Norris will mount this horrific laser eyed stag and cast them back to the depths of hades. There's a ton on controversy over this thing, and it's always been that way. I hope that it stays that way too. It's a conversation piece with haunting presence as it's supposed to be. The creator / artist for the sculpture envisioned a wild bronco with an untamed spirit that will allow you to pass if you dare to be so brave and to hold your ground as you do. It's an image of the daringness of the "can do American spirit" that helped to venture to the west in the first place. Not to mention the fact that he died by crushing while completing it, so it adds to legends behind it. It's an ominous figure that represents the history of the area, and I love what it stands for. If you plop the Statue of Liberty smack in the middle of the Pacific, it just doesn't make the same big impact. Neither does a big horse in the middle of the prairie. Dumb. But I love it, just not like anyone else. Any decent modern artist will tell you - any reaction - emotional or intellectual - positive or negative is just fine. It's the personal engagement that counts. Well, my gut reaction is that this sucker has the blue and orange reversed - I mean who doesn't fall for blue eyes? My first cognitive thought isn't confusion or awe at a fiberglas trainwreck. I want really WANT to be spooked out with genuine fear. Why? Because the Giant Blue Bronco killed (squashed) its creator, straight out of a movie (no disrespect to the artist Luis Jiminez intended, just the truth). Bottom line? It's in the wrong frickin' place. Ole Orange Eyes should be moved INSIDE the main terminal, larger than life, not stuck out in a field. If you're going to pay millions for a sculpture, at least get your money's worth in scaring the crap out of people. People would remember Denver better, take more pictures, talk about it (no press is bad press), maybe even get to to (gasp!) touch the hoof of FrankenHorse. Growing up in Phoenix I looked to Denver as the nearest location of what I would consider "civilization". For Denver had the colleges and universities. They also had the local music and art scenes that went with higher education. The more temperate climate appeared to make it a town where humans should be living. And there were the mountains, which I took to be something that surrounded Denver and inflected everything about the place. Generic mountains, forming a range of sorts. Yeah. Mountains. The only blank spot in my fevered imagination: What was Denver about visually? What symbolized it? Nothing came to mind. Seattle had the Space Needle. Los Angeles had the Hollywood sign. Even St. Louis had the arch. What about Denver? How to visualize it? The opening sequences of "Dynasty" didn't help much. Buildings and mountains. So someone else must have noticed something missing as well. And to run counter to the rather drab Midwestern (rather than mountain) vibe of the place, they had to go out on a limb. "Hey, let's get a giant statue of a raging stallion, paint it blue, and make its eyes glow. And let's put it at the airport so visitors--whether coming or going--know what Denver is about! THAT will give them a visual! Hehehe" Well. . . so . . . yeah . . . . . umm. . . . . I guess it was cheaper than putting up a giant artificial ski mountain in the middle of what once was Stapelton. Or building a new freeway in the shape of a B52. Or . . . . something. So now it's with some whimsy that I point out the whimsical mascot erected at DIA: Something that to many people seems to symbolize death or fear or the apocalypse. And it's actually made cooler (albeit tragically) by its history of killing its maker. So maybe it's more appropriate to Denver than most imagine: When Denver decides to do something, they do it a l'outrance (as the artsy types like to say). Which explains the light rail, the toll road that doesn't get used much because it's a parallel route to a freeway, the saturation of marijuana dispensaries, and the airport itself. Every time I drive out to DIA, not going to lie, I get excited to see the horse for 1/2 reasons 1. It means that I am getting close to DIA. Its quite a ways away from North Denver "about 1/2 hours-1 hours drive" so when I see it I get excited to not be driving anymore. 2. It's a love-hate relationship, but what else could be placed out here in the middle of our boring NASCAR drive down Pena Blvd. It's makes me realize that I am almost near the airport after almost dying, racing the other drivers at 80mph to the airport. By the way, this horse also reminds me there are cops that hang around after it for the speed trap. Speaking from one's experience, it's one court visit in good old downtown Denver, where the judge tells you how big of a piece of poop you are to society, slap you with a cheap $500 fine, and you're Asian mom gives you a year lecture about dishonoring her. Sadly Ive come to the conclusion that we as a state, or at least those who pick our public art, are tasteless losers. I love art. I support local artists, our house is full of things from locals. This is just ugly. It's tacky, it's really scary and creepy, and in no way (IMO) identifies with me a Coloradan, or Denverite. All it needs to complete the look is the bones of humans for it ground to dust under its hooves, maybe occasionally fire lasers and fry a passing taxi. If it wouldn't cost us more to remove I'd say let's remove it. Art is subjective, but I'm sorry, some art is just crap, and expensive price tags typically are sign #1. read more

You either love it or hate it, and isn't that one of the goals of art? Especially publicly funded art? We could of had a boring, bland, middle America type of sculpture that people from Omaha think is "really neat", but that's not the point. Art should be bold and odd and slightly disturbing, and most of all it should evoke some visceral reaction in you when you look at it, and the Blue Bronco definitely does that. Not really sure how to feel about this big guy! On one hand I love it because it is a statue that I associate with traveling or picking up a loved one! That is great! Landing after a long trip and coming home to those red eyes! On the other hand I read that when it was being built, it toppled over and killed the artist that was creating it by crushing him. Not sure where to put this one. Generally I like horse-themed art but I'm not really into a blue one with glowing red eyes. I don't really like this piece, but that doesn't mean it should not be art. I get all the controversy, especially the part about "Welcome to Denver, we're all about huge very well-hung horses with red demon eyes." People who visit me mostly come from other countries, and mostly from Canada (yes, that is another country, google it). Their reaction? None. Once I accidentally pointed it out to my mom and she said, "Oh. Well. I don't know." And then resumed our conversation about, um, well whatever we were talking about. But that's how Canadians are - as Canadian as possible, given the circumstances. On another occasion I pointed it out to my brother and it spurred a conversation about the other public art in Denver. He's an architect, so he checked into the other artworks and left with the impression that Denver is *not* just a back water Prairie hick town full of toothless hillbillies with receding foreheads, but is in fact a city trying to seem like a fairly cosmopolitan urban center. I am developing this impression that Big Blue Horse, King Dong, Devil Pony is more offensive to Denverites than to anyone else. Three stars, because I can't award 2-1/2 stars. I don't personally like the piece, but It does what public art is supposed to do: stir up conversation. read more

Waitasec-- if someone "Checks In" at this thing, wouldn't that mean they're texting while driving? Gasp! The saddest thing about this sculpture is not that the artist was killed while creating it... but that it's called a "Blue Bronco", when it's actually titled "Blue Mustang". Now, I'm not complaining about schematics... I'm complaining that the artist made this supposedly original sculpture of a horse. But one that looks almost identical to the iconic "Bucky" that sits atop Invesco Field. It has the same stance as Bucky, yet it's blue. Some creativity, there. You were commissioned by the city and county to build this thing...and you made it look like something that's only seen in a 75,000 seating stadium and been there for 30+ years. So it's sad that visitors to Denver might assume it's a sculpture for the Broncos (especially with blue being a key color of the Broncos' palette), when it's supposedly an "original" piece. Just seems misguided to me. read more
