Located on a busy street in downtown Lowell, this is a great place to grab some sushi and drinks, or some Thai food if that's what you're in the mood for. I would like to correct a previous review, as someone stated this is a Vietnamese and Japanese restaurant. This place is not Vietnamese, but Thai/Japanese fusion. It even says so right in the heading of this page. That aside, now let's move onto the food. The two Thai dishes I ordered the first time were tasty enough. I had honey pork and Thai sweet sausage, one of their specialty dishes. The chicken with spicy peanut sauce had really good flavor, though it wasn't all that spicy. I guess that to me is an indication it isn't all too authentic. When the food isn't very spicy, that tells me it caters to a more Americanized palate. But it was still good despite the fact. I have also tried some of the sushi. I ordered salmon, unagi, and tobiko nigiri (sushi), which was pretty good quality. Their tempura udon isn't too bad either. It's basically a big bowl of udon noodle soup with mixed veggies, and veggie tempura served on the side. Good food and good service, but a bit on the pricey side, considering it is an upscale kind of place. Blue Taleh is a great addition to the downtown Lowell area. I've been there a number of times both with just my wife as well as with friends and out of town guests... everyone just raves about the food here. The outside dining is a great option during the warmer months, and when it is cooler outside both the "dining room" area and the bar area are very nice. The sushi here is top rate, and the thai cooking is particularly good even for Lowell with all if its southeast Asian cuisine. I have actually been to Thailand and have not had a red curry as delicious as the one they make at Blue Taleh. Very good sushi and curry. The caterpillar roll is my favorite along with the mango curry and of course the Thai iced tea and coffee! YUM CITY. Great selection of food and fairly priced for the quality and portion sizes. There an extensive sushi menu on top of many Thai and Japanese dishes. The hot and sour soup is outstanding. Chicken satay is seasoned just right and the chicken skewers are quite large. You can tell the peanut sauce and many (if not all) of their dishes are all made from scratch. Other appetizer favorites of ours included the calamari, fresh rolls and vegetable spring rolls. I've stuck to mainly Thai dishes both times I've dined at Blue Taleh. Sweet basil is one of my favorite Thai dishes and although different from where I've had it before, Blue Taleh's version is delicious and full of flavor. Only thing I have not liked at all in my last two visits were the drinks. The menu makes some of the drinks sound so tasty with their unique spin on some of the cocktails, but they just taste like juice. Will skip the drinks next time. They do charge for substitutions here, which doesn't bother me. I also ordered a margarita with no orange liqueur and substituted something else instead. I was told there are no returns on drinks if I didn't like it. Fair enough. If you order something with ingredients that YOU requested then there should be no reason it tastes wrong in the first place. Working in the industry myself, I get that, but I know a lot of other diners won't understand. Aside from street space, there is no parking. You need to find one of the large city lots nearby. This place has amazing food and drinks. I'm usually a (craft) beer drinker, but when I'm here I go for the martinis. Typically not the fruity ones though, the more straight-forward martinis... and they do them right. Best martinis I've had. Ever. Onto the food... I've only had a limited taste of hot food on the menu, but I will say that for instance the crab rangoon is the BEST you can get. It's not the poorly made, bloated with cream cheese, mess that nearly every chinese place serves. They are perfectly made with just the right crunchiness, and you can see the crab inside with the cream cheese. It's a good proportion of each, and you can tell it's not imitation crab meat just tossed in with large amounts of cream cheese. This stuff is almost red, and it's some of the best crab rangoon I've ever tasted. And now that I've spent a paragraph talking about that one appetizer I'll move on. Just wanted to emphasize that their chinese food is better than the norm. The sushi is also quite good, and generally the reason I go here. They have a lot of standard rolls that most sushi restaurants serve, as well as some of their own custom ones. And their service has been great as well. If you're a sushi fan and you're from this area, you probably know your options already, so I'll make a comparison. Blue Taleh is about on par with Feng Shui, though smaller (which can be good or bad, depending on what you want). They've definitely got one up on Takumi (in Nashua), and they're MUCH better than Etsogo (which is strangely just a block away). read more

Blue Taleh (how the hell do you pronouce that?)--why did I wait so long to visit you? You are delicious!! We arrived to a fairly empty restaurant and were asked if we had a reservation. Slightly confused by this question given the dirth of customers at that hour, I said no and we were seated at a high top table by the window. Dinner started off with cocktails, as most of my dinners are wont to do. I had the Hendrick's Blossom martini. So tasty and so pretty to look at!! The drink was a combination of Hendrick's gin, a splash of peach schnapps, and a little bit of Sprite I believe, and it's served with strips of shaved cucumber right in the drink. Possibly one of my favorite cocktails ever. I had a spicy salmon roll as an appetizer which was pretty good. To be honest, nothing jumped out at me as this being better sushi than I've had elsewhere, but it was fresh and delicious nonetheless. For dinner I got the Crazy Noodle with chicken and found it to be a spicy delight. And a very generous portion, too. I'm usually not one to have to take home leftovers, but I had plenty left for lunch the next day. I actually tried to recreate the Crazy Noodle at home tonight, but didn't have much success. The food is great and eating outside in the evening allows you to enjoy a nice view of the sun setting in Lowell. The sashimi is good and fresh. The drinks are awesome. Try the watermelon martini. I've been pleased with the curries and chicken cashew nut. Staff is friendly as well. My only complaint is the Papaya Salad. It's $10.95 and it is SMALL. I've ordered papaya salad from many thai places and the size is much bigger for a much smaller price. I enjoyed my meal but the food wasn't very spicy; the hot and sour soup, chili duck, and the red curry were all pretty mild. I've had spicy thai food before and this isn't even close. I love the sauce on the Japanese dumplings, and the taste. If the dumpling was like mega-size I would eat the whole thing for dinner. The sushi is pretty average though. This lovely restaurant has the perfect ambience for socializing. The lighting and volume are perfect; the food is flavorful, colorful and beautifully presented. We started with miso soup and a sashimi appetizer; a cucumber roll was refreshing and left us ready for our main course. I had rocha trio; others in my party had a spicy duck dish, fried rice, and red curry. None if us wanted to share because we were enjoying our meal. The dessert selection was great and we left happy and full. Sangria lovers: the "barkeep sangria" is worth coming back for in itself, and there is a bar to hang out and nosh. She would not let me even order a beer. I was there with all my friends aged 26-30. My military id has my birthday on it and is a valid form of id, i proceeded to google this and show her that it was a valid form of id but she refused and said i can go drink somewhere else. This was after we were already halfway through our appetizer sushis. I told my friend to order an extra beer so i can drink his. I started to drink his extra beer and she came over and proceeded to cuss me out. Such an asshole owner. Horrible to service members and very braindead. We have been visiting Blue Taleh for years and always enjoy the food. On this visit, we had a sushi appetizer for the first time, the wrecking ball, lobster in an avocado salad topped with torched salmon, taro crunch, eel sauce, and spicy mayonnaise. It was one of the best things I have ever tasted and I will order it each and every time I visit Blue Taleh. The Spicy Duck Curry was wonderful, as was the String Bean Stir Fry with pork. I wish I could say this was a one time occurrence but it was not. Very disappointing! Oh, and they served my friend the wrong dish--something with peanuts! I've been to Blue Taleh several times and I have to say it is a nice, well run place and if you like sushi give it a try. I have yet to sit at a table at the Blue Taleh. I am always at the bar. Victor makes a mean drink. If I'm not drinking beer I'm usually drinking a Mexican Martini. Very good here. The sushi is fresh and well made (I like sitting at the bar so I can watch my food being prepared). It can get pricey when you start ordering a few drinks. I wouldn't recommend going here if you're on a tight budget. The staff is very friendly. I always end up chatting with the people behind the bar. Visited The Blue Taleh with a large party on a Tuesday evening prior to seeing a play. The waiter came over relatively quickly and took our drink order...then we didn't see him for awhile. The drinks came and they were fantastic (if you like martinis, the Reverse Cosmo is a must). Now, in our defense. We had a large party. But, I felt we waited quite some time for our meals. But when they did come, they were excellent. One of the guests in my party said they make everything fresh so it takes awhile- i agree with that. It was fresh, and it took awhile. But it was well worth the wait. I greatly appreciate the fact that the owner of the Blue Taleh was filling our water glasses...I've never seen that before! I have become even more picky lately and ordered a "made to order meal" of shrimp with veggies. It was delicious...several shrimp with peppers, onions, snap peas, broccoli, carrots, etc...I ate about 95 percent of the meal and it was worth every bite. This is my favorite place for spicy Thai food. I always get the scallop basil rice bowl. I am never dissapointed with the food. I usually have enough left for lunch the next day. They have entertainment too, which is good (Sauce). The waitress is usually slow to take the order. For example, the last two times i have been there, no one will come over for a drink order, instead, the waitress will just come over and ask if you are ready to order your food. Weird. This is one of my top favorite sushi places. The only negative things that I have to say about them is that parking can be tough, they are a little pricer than other restaurants with similar food, and have very slow service, particularly the getting the check part. On the plus side, I love the environment. The tables are small so it's not ideal for a large group but it's a nice place to go with a friend or two. The bar is also fun to sit at and they have some tables on the side. It's nice to sit over there when they have a live band playing. They have a piano there, but they don't play every night. Also, they have an outdoor patio that is great for the warmer evenings. I've never ordered anything here that I didn't like. I definitely recommend trying the kiss me martini. It's not in the menu but it's amazing. They have a huge drink menu. As for food I would try the ashari cucumber and the edamame for appetizers, the chicken or vegetable pad thai, and the volcano maki, rainbow roll, caterpillar maki, sun maki, goldfish maki or the Hawaii spicy. It's great to have a nice Thai restaurant in downtown Lowell. I have been to the restaurant several times. When it's really busy the service is poor, but fine when there are only a couple tables taken. It gets expensive when getting takeout or lunch. Crab Rangoon and Pad Thai are my favorites here. Pad Thai is MUCH better to eat in the restaurant, for when taken out it dries up. I would definitely recommend this place for any occasion. Expect to pay about $20 each for an entree, split appetizer and soft drink. read more

Went there late on a Saturday night just before the kitchen closed. My friend and I had just come from a show at the MRT and were very hungry. The restaurant was not busy and the music was on the loud side so we asked to sit outside. It was a perfect night to do so. We ordered wine and sushi. The salmon sushi was lovely. We also ordered vegetable sushi. We got the cucumber mango roll and the aspara maki (asparagus, carrot, avocado). I loved the cucumber mango rolls. The prices weren't terrible. We each had a glass of wine and our sushi was a total of 14 items. We paid about $20 with tax and tip. I will definitely go again in the future. Have had great sushi here for lunch before but went with a group to try dinner for the first time last night and everyone was really impressed with the food. Appetizers of scallion pancakes and sampler platter were good - solid versions of pretty common items. Sushi was great, as usual. We shared entrees of pork crazy noodle, chicken lettuce wraps, crispy pad thai with shrimp (my favorite) and green bean stir fry with beef. Everything was outstanding, ingredients tasted really fresh. I was so happy that my dining companions were all from out of town because it meant I got to take home all the leftovers! Crazy service--multiple people attend to the table--menus, water, drinks, ordering food. The manager even checked in at one point. It was difficult to get questions answered and problems resolved. Among several other things, we ordered Tuna Tataki--we've ordered this before at a different restaurant and enjoy it because it's wrapped in daikon. Nice and light; no starch. When we received our sushi orders, one of them looked weird. Well, we thought, it's a different restaurant. Two of us each tried one. It definitely wasn't Tataki. It had some heavy starchy bottom piece that we couldn't figure out. We asked a server about it and they said they would get our server. Time elapsed (SEVERAL minutes). One of us had another piece. The server finally came over and we tried to confirm the Tuna Tataki. She said it was. She asked if we wanted to see a menu. I said no. (I should have said yes. Lesson learned.) So yuck, we were stuck with this. The two of us who were eating the sushi ate some tuna off the top of a couple more pieces--the tuna part was pretty good except I dislike spicy mayo. Needles to say, that was all we ate. The bill came and there it was: "Tuna Tostados." Our server disappeared again so we eventually gave the credit cards (split) to a different server and explained the problem and asked that the Tuna Tostados be taken off the bill. The bill returned with the credit card slips but no tab listing what we ordered so we didn't know if the item had been removed. The server was still a no-show so I got up to look for her and found the manager instead. I explained the siuation and he said that the server had repeated our order to us (honestly, she may have, but it was loud and she had an accent and we were confident in what we ordered--we generally get the same things wherever we eat sushi). The manager continued to say that we had eaten 5 (of maybe 12--we definitely didn't eat half) pieces so we had to pay for it. The manager was challenging and rude--rude mostly because I didn't get what I wanted, I have to say. But I was very polite. He was not. A: How come the server or even the manager couldn't tell us this when they returned the bill? B: Sometimes, I know, the customer isn't always right, but don't you try to give them the benefit of the doubt? Even go halfway? Everything about this place is just wonderful. The food is so delicious and presented beautifully. We've eaten outside both times and it's like being on vacation with the canal and city view. I've tried several items on the menu from others at my table, and had Pad Thai and coconut chicken, many of the appetizers and Thai coffee and Thai tea. Everything has been beyond excellent.
