Blue Treeper did an excellent job with my old Honey Locust in the back yard. The tree looks great and 100% of my concerns are taken care of with crossing branches, dead branches and some old scars from previous storms. We used Blue Treeper to clean up multiple downed tree limbs from this last storm. The company we scheduled over a week ago canceled the day of and so I started calling around. We had a few broken branches in our green ash tree in our front yard from a recent snow storm and so I reached out to Blue Treeper to get a quote. I had gotten another quote from a different arborist and they were several hundred dollars more. Initially Hannah said they were booking about 2 weeks out but she was able to come out much sooner. We hired Hannah and crew to clean the dead out of a small ash in our front yard. She quoted the lowest price BY FAR at $430 when other companies quoted $600, $975, and $1200 (yeah, if you can believe it). Our neighbor had used Blue Treeper earlier in the summer and seemed satisfied with the work. I thought the price was reasonable as we've had the tree cleaned out two times prior at $380 and that was before the pandemic and all the horrible inflation. I'd received an email saying they would arrive around 1pm, so my husband and I took the dogs for a morning walk. When we arrived back home at 10 am, Hannah and crew were already in the tree and had cut down quite a bit. When I saw it - the amount of living green on the ground - my stomach dropped. In the house I told my husband that I wish I could've spoken with them before they began the work to reiterate that I just wanted the dead cleaned out, except for this one branch that hung really low and needed to be lightened up. My husband went back outside and asked them to clean out only the dead from there on out. Hannah explained that they were doing a true clean up of the tree, lightening up all the branches for heavy winter snow (something to that effect). What I came to realize is that since Hannah and her co-worker were both hanging from the tree that they didn't have the proper equipment to just clean out the dead (equipment like a lift). In order to remove any dead twigs or branches, they had to cut off full living branches and limbs from closer to the trunk. The tree now looks kind of weird. Like, unnatural. There's still some dead on it - twigs farther out that would be impossible to reach from closer to the trunk and there is a branch that was cut so bluntly horizonal that it sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm not a tree-trimming expert but I think, if I'm not mistaken, there is a bit of an art to cleaning up a tree so it looks natural. I don't think our tree was even remotely at the point where that wouldn't have been possible with the right equipment. I appeciate that Hannah keeps her prices reasonable and I always prefer to support a small, woman-owned business, but I have a couple of suggestions for her and her team: 1. Show up when you say you're going to unless you've checked in and made adjustments with the home owner. This way you and they can confirm the type of work they want done. 2. Don't put your equipment away until you've confirmed that the client is happy. (I'd asked her about hitting a couple of remaining small, dead branches before she left, but she declined telling me they were living. I can look at them and see that they aren't. I think it was that they'd already put everything away and were ready to take off. Not mention they would've been super hard to reach.) Perhaps I'm being too picky. Could be I am. All I know is when I'd had the tree done the previous two times, I was happier with the outcome. But again, I appreciate that she's not gouging her clients with ludicris pricing.
