It has a spacious interior with a variety of routes for bouldering, top rope, auto-belay, and lead climb. The walls are much taller than other gyms I've been to and make the routes much challenging. Some of the grading doesn't seem very consistent. Staff is nice. Kids and adults of all ages are welcome. It's definitely fun to experience it at least once! The day pass is currently $30 per person with all gear rentals included. No price reduction if you bring your own gear. The membership cost is hefty, $100 per month or $80 if prepay... that's close to 1K per person at a minimum. One membership bonus is that all classes are free. If I resume climbing on a regular basis, I might consider shelling out some $$.

The staff were very friendly and detailed on how to get prepared for climbing the wall with the harnesses and also the ins and outs of each level of difficulty. My son loved climbing, as this is definitely his wheelhouse, but not necessarily mine lol. There were numerous walls to climb with the ropes/harnesses utilized and other boulder walls with a harness or rope not used but with a padded flooring under the ways. There is a wall for each level of climber from beginner to seasoned. If you want to try something new or get more practice on your skills, LEF is perfect for you! We will come back soon!

The gym has loads of equipment for all different types of training like free weights, treadmills, machines, and is spaced out fairly well. The only downside with the gym is sometimes it will get too busy and there will be a wait time for machines, but there's loads of different variations if you need them, other than that it is amazing. The recreational center has more than the gym itself, it also has exercise class rooms like cycling and zumba, multiple basketball courts, an indoor track, and even a rock climbing wall with staff to help newcomers. Overall this center has something for everyone and I have personally loved my experiences here. I would positively recommend this space to anyone looking to meet new people or just fill time in your day.

As a college student at the University of Kentucky, the Johnson Center is one of the places I spend…read moremost of my time. It's a great way to get my head off the stresses from school and meet new people who have similar interests to myself. The faculty have all been nice from what I've seen and interacted with. It's mostly college students here at Kentucky. Most of the negative online reviews focus on the gym's layout, which is next to the basketball courts, and I would have to agree that this is probably the gym's weakest point. I don't like that there are two floors to the gym and that it is so crowded. But if you go at the right time, I'm sure it's similar to every gym. Other than that, there aren't many negative things I could say about it. I've enjoyed my experiences so far and plan to keep going to the Johnson Center in the future.

Just joined because it's really the only climbing gym in the area. So far I'm really not liking it…read more Bouldering: In terms of bouldering, the routes are difficult, which is fine, but the wall is also sand paper so you'll get scrapes if you're pushing yourself. Additionally the routes are ridiculously condensed which both makes it easy to bang your hand or knee going for power moves and makes it confusing to tell which rocks are in each route. Top Rope: I've only used auto-belay because I just moved here and don't have any climbing partners. Given how difficult the bouldering routes are, it's crazy how easy the top rope routes are graded. Most people seem to come to this place in groups and I assume that the regular top-route and lead routes are graded more difficult. If so I'll update my rating later. Overall, my biggest problem is the vibe. I came from a very friendly and supportive bouldering gym in Cleveland (shoutout Nosotros) and this place does not compare. It's expensive and super corporatized. Hopefully, I meet some nicer people soon, but at the moment there is just something off about this place that I don't think reflects the climbing community as a whole.

There is a "hidden" hemlock that you have to climb rebar to see. It's a little hidden but not terribly hard to find and worth the short climb!
