Never use this credit union for any type of loan. I wanted to pay off a small amount ($3,000) on a loan and they will not allow a simple online payoff. A payoff letter was sent to me with and extra $150.00 in "processing" fees. I did opened a checking account and transferred my Calpers Pension Direct Deposit from Bank of America to USECU. No privacy, you stand (have no chairs) at a coffee bar and discuss needs w/ your teller w/ about 3 other tellers across the bar. Way too progressive for us. Not even good or accurate info. Very weird atmosphere esp for banking. Took our business to mission fed - they were terrific! read more

Unbelievable, screw-you mentality that you should run away from at all costs. I've been a ten-year customer of USE; had auto loans, direct deposit, etc all done through them. Throughout the entire time, it's been a pleasant experience, and I was very sad when I moved away and we decided we'd have to choose another bank. Fast forward to today; with our accounts mostly transferred over, I closed out our auto loan. Naturally, with a ten-day payoff, there is often an overage, in this case about $400. I was on travel, and I use paypal for rideshare, linked to USE. I said "Hmm, I suppose it will be easier to just spend that money, vice transferring it out". My USE app and Mint both showed the $400 in my account. I get back, and there is an overdraft fee for EVERY SINGLE USE, DESPITE a positive balance showing in the account! I called them, and was told "Oh, we don't automatically release overages, so those charges are your fault; didn't you know we put a hold on the check?" I was then given an incremental attempt by the phone servicers to settle "oh, we can clear 3 of the 10 overages, oh, we can clear 6 of the 10 overages". No. You had an unclear system that resulted in a balance showing where there was none; I'm not going to be penalized for that. It took 3 layers of management before they reversed all the charges. Bottom line: this bank is every bit as evil as a big corporate bank, and should be avoided at all costs. read more

Worst C.U. I've ever dealt with. People very nice, but dang...so many flaws with this company. Still waiting for return phone calls (months ago) re requests for an explanation about my loan. Multiple calls and attempts thru online account; still nothing. La Mesa layout gives NO privacy at all. Using ATM, one worker decided she was going to conduct my ATM transaction and started poking on my screen. WTH? Another time, asked payoff balance. Told one number. Wrote check. "Oh. I'm sorry I told you the wrong amount." I won't even talk about the lack of parking. Oops. I just did. On the plus side, I did get a good rate on solar loan when they were USe. Suggest San Diego County CU. Always great experience with them. read more

I have been with USC for over 40 years. It's really gone down hill taking advantage of the covid by closing branches and having a minium staff Waits outside for up to 1/2 hour. I am so very sad to go through the complete hassle to change banks, the writings on the wall I think they will be out of business soon. It's not even the same bank anymore. read more

I've been a USECU member for over 20 years. I opened the accounts when I was a college student as SDSU. I never really had any issues until recently. I basically kept the accounts open (Checking & Savings) even though I don't actively use them but left enough in those accounts to avoid the monthly fees. Apparently, about a year ago, they said they mailed me a letter letting me know that they will be eliminating my type of checking account and will be switching my checking account to another similar one (mind you I never received this letter as I have elected the eStatement option). When I spoke to the 2nd customer representative this past Monday (4/26/2021), she said they switched me over the checking account that best matched my old account. So I guess they thought the best matched account was an account that would incur a monthly fee at it's current balance instead of switching me over to an account with no minimum balance requirement as long as I am signed up for eStatements (???). So on top of all of this, they blocked me from accessing my account online about a year ago because they said that I have no activity for a year and that I would need to stop by a branch office in order to unblock it. This was in the peak of covid, so I waited a bit until the covid cases were a bit lower to visit a branch. With the two situations, I was being charged $15/mo without me knowing since I could not access my account. After explaining this to the customer service reps (on Sun and on Mon), I asked them to please refund all the charges as it seems like really poor business practice to switch someone over to an account that would incur charges when there was a much better/similar account that they could have switched me over to. I get from a business perspective, they will generate more money, but in the long run when this type of shady business practice happens it will cost them money. Today is Wed, 4/28/21 and I have not hear back from USECU. read more

I have been a USECU member since I moved to San Diego in 1995. I have been using the branch on Rio San Diego for years. When I drove there this morning I discovered that it no longer exists and is being relocated, so I drove to the Parkway Drive branch. It is a good bit smaller than the Rio San Diego branch and I had the feeling that it had been thrown together as a temporary location. The security person was quite nice but was busy telling customers where to queue. She had me move twice, once "not to block the camera," and the second time to let others use the facility (I guess a table nearby). There are still covid distancing dots on the floor, but the line they form and where it was supposed to go was unclear. I believe there was a sticker on the teller window instructing customers to wear masks, yet I did not see one at the building entrance. The poor teller had to wipe down all surfaces between customers, even though that type of transmission has almost been ruled out. The teller was very nice, and got me the money I was withdrawing. I left thinking that USECU was shrinking or going out of business, and wondered why I felt a sense of loyalty to this organization. I've been looking at other credit unions online this afternoon to see what alternatives are out there. read more

Not only is this my favorite USE Credit Union branch, but the best financial institution branch Ive ever visited. It the 1st of such "neighborhood" themed lobby with free coffee, Wi-Fi, table booths, couches, Microsoft Surface tablets to use while at the branch, and a 4-8 person enclosed meeting room with computer/internet access. I was told the La Mesa branch is the only one outfitted like this throughout the state, as it is a pilot program to see how well the community would like it. I personally love it! They have restrooms for their members, and can see myself coming to my credit union more, and spending more time here after my visits to take care of my financial affairs. Kudos to USE Credit Union for stepping out of the box to try new things. I hope all the other branches soon follow suit. read more

Due to Covid expect long lines in the sun, take your mask off which no other bank I have dealt with will make you do even for a picture, poor customer service and no accommodations to help make your long line stand any better. I am updating my review from two to one stars for the following reasons: Every time I go into the new branch I am greeted by someone carrying a laptop/tablet who wants to know my business. (Today there were two, one of whom commented on my watch. Very unprofessional.) Sometimes there are other people nearby and I don't want them to hear what I have come to the bank for. Several times I have been asked my password and twice I had to more or less whisper it so others would not hear. This is also true for the only two "teller windows" as well. Not only can the customer next to me hear what I am saying, but I can hear what they are saying too. Also many transactions are taken care of at a screen where the employees explain what is being done which others can also hear. Money is disbursed through the machine and no longer counted out. For me privacy is paramount for conducting business at a bank. The new layout/design of the bank does not allow that. A major drawback in my opinion. There are other peeves I have as well, such as the parking, forget finding parking between 11:30AM and 2:30PM, and the constant change in employees. I have covered both of these before. Also large parts of the new branch are unused, such as the booths at the north side, where presumably customers are to sit and work or enjoy the view of the parking lot and dumpster. I have news for you USE, when I go to the bank I take care of business ASAP and then leave. For my previous review I received a call from USE wanting to talk to me about it. I left a message for them and they never called me back. This was on October 31. I will be avoiding this branch, even if it means driving to Mission Valley where at least the set up of the bank is more efficient and more in tune of what the customers actually expect from a bank, which is professional service and surroundings and being able to conduct business in privacy. read more

Beware - if you ever open an account with USECU, good luck ever closing it. We had accounts for years, and got our monthly statements. Then we got a notice that because our account was dormant - we hadn't actively used the account, we had to pay $50 to "bring it current". We paid and then tried to close the accounts, but now it turns out that each individual sub-account has to be made current. We never received notices that the account was going to "go dormant", and extorting $50 to get the accounts out of dormancy just so we can close them is ridiculous. Still trying to close those accounts! Never again with USECU. (Oh yeah - try using Chat - after going through the questions, you get "if you got this message then we are busy - try calling our phone line or use our "secure email". Of course when you try the secure e-mail, that just says "internal error - contact your financial institution". Back to the phone.) read more

This is a somewhat odd branch - for a Credit Union. The employees tend to be dressed so casually that it is not always clear who works there and who does not. Although there are several couches and tables to sit, a coffee machine and mugs with the USECU logo buy, and a sign promoting free WiFI, I've never seen anyone sitting drinking out of one of the mugs - nor think of a Credit Union as a place where even customers would choose to come use the Internet (even to access their own accounts), or sit around, relax, and talk with anyone, let alone do homework or play board games, the way many people seem to at cafes and tea shops. To me it's just a place to do quick deposits or withdrawals or get minor banking issues addressed (but not always fully resolved). read more

Do NOT get a car loan through USE credit union, or any service for that matter. I don't even know where to begin. You can only make payments online by opening an account with them, otherwise you have to mail in a check. But for the main complaint, their customer service is horrendous. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I missed one car payment. I contacted them to try and make a deferment. They don't offer that service. Instead I called to make an arrangement with "Ray" to make 2 payments in August (this call was in June), he said that was ok and would note the account. I made my payment in July, then August rolls around and I begin preparing to make my double August payment, when I wake up to my car getting repossessed . Come to find out, in order to make the "arrangement", I would've needed to give an exact date, well "Ray" failed to mention this to me, misleading me into thinking I was in good standing. When asked if I could speak to "Ray", SURPRISE SURPRISE!!! "Ray" no longer works there. USE employee's then tried to justify their actions by lying, saying I was further behind than I claimed. This is demonstrably false, with the checks and statements to prove it. So now, because an employee who failed at basic customer service, failing to inform his customer of the necessary details needed to keep the account in good standing, I was misled. So, do not get any service offered by USE, they do not care about their customers and fail to accept any accountability or responsibility (no matter how small on their part), and will even lie to do so. I am looking to get out of this car loan as FAST as possible. read more

They are incompetent idiots. They attract you with the idea they will provide you benefit to you, and then they are unable to fulfill them. They provide me with written direct deposit information (and I have them) for my employer, but they apparently do not work since they gave me the member number instead of bank account number to use for payroll (discovered when I contacted the phone customer service). Now I changed and is working, but still no trace of my first paycheck with the wrong detail (because of their wrong information). It is 2 weeks. I will 48 hours more and then report to the BBB and take all the legal step to recover my salary before switching bank. read more

I hate this bank! Their phone system is awful! You can't get ahold of a live person. We had to make an appointment to cash in bonds. But to get the appt we had to call and leave a message and wait for someone to call us back. This is ridiculous. You need to enter your member number and password when you call the 866 number but it never recognizes it. WTF!!! I just want to talk to a person. Maybe because it's a small bank, their system sucks but if you want to compete with large banks you need to step it up. DO NOT BANK HERE!!! Closing my account today!!!!! read more

Been with USE for over 20 years. Have had great service and good experiences. Their problem: Location, Location, Location! Only one branch East of the 805 in East county. The San Diego State Branch cannot be included. It is ONLY for students and employees of SDSU, as there is no parking and it is not really an office It is located in a hallway between 2 food courts. It was wonderful when I worked at SDSU. The Staff there are awesome given the terrible working conditions and location they have to endure. The other location. Who ever chose this location should be unemployed now. A beautiful branch with helpful people. Do not go there between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm unless you want to drive around in circles for 20 minutes, USE shares this lot with Chick-fil-a and The Habit restaurant. It is horrible. read more

I have been with this credit union, for 33 years. The customer service had steadily gone down, and down. The past few times I have come in, there are 3 or 4 employees, doing something, besides waiting on customers. They try to force you, to talk to a remote employee, when they can help you. One of the reasons, I have been a credit union customer, is because of personal service, unlike most banks. Today, I was told this is the "future business model" and the "live" people, in the credit union office, will not help me, and that I will have to talk to an employee, via computer. Last time I was in this branch, again there was no customers, and the woman actually told me, that I had to use the computerized ATM, because someone might come in, that has "real" business, to be taken care of. It may be time to move my money, to a more customer oriented credit union. It is really quite sad...... read more

Hate hate this place. Got a car loan here two years ago. About 8 months in they said we didn't have insurance on the car. Showed ALL the proof they ask for. After 3/4months dealing with the situation they sent a letter saying thank your for the requested paper work BUT we still are going to charge you $1500 in fees. Tried talking to to mangers and they ALL said they can't do anything. I said ok, paid that fee the NEXT month that I paid off the fee they send a letter saying that my insurance isn't in compliance in the loan!! This whole time NEVER went without insurance, HAVEthe SAME insurance and now they want to say it's not in compliance. This is some BS. I realized they just scamming people into these Unnecessary fees. I'm sure the next letter is going to state I have to pay a "fine" because my insurance isn't right. OHH also BE Aware they Charge $15.55 for debit transactions that they DONT TELL you about. Non informative tellers can't help, the managers are useless. There was a lady (Melissa) working here that was just flat out rude. Never bank with this complaint, period. read more

I've been with USE for about two years now, Faith helped me deal with a personal issue and I am grateful for her! B Anthony was nice and patient when it came to helping me open an account. Not to mention, USE doesn't require a minimum balance in your card which is pretty awesome. I have been to both the old and new location and the new location is amazing. It looks like a living room/coffee shop. My first time at the location, they gave me a tour. They provide their members with a conference room and laptop they can use and free coffee...etc You can relax while getting things done at your credit union. read more

Horrible Service! Called to make a payment on my car over the phone and after 2 minutes someone answered, which wasn't a bad hold time. I told him that I wanted to make my payment. He got my name and the make and model of my car, then told me that he was new and couldn't perform that task, so I would be placed back in the que.... 12 minutes of holding later, I get another rep. I was told that since it is the last day to pay, that they won't reflect it for 2 days and I will get a late fee plus the 10 dollar service charge for phone payment, but I am free to go in to the branch and they can run the payment with no fees. There are no options for an online payment either... Catch up with the times people, and don't have a new guy answering the phones that can't perform simple banking transactions! That hold time was uncalled for and very unnecessary, but the reps, I have to say, were pleasant. read more

She was on the phone for 15 minutes with her colleague loan consults trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Let me just say that if i didn't have car loan thru his bank I would have never bank here. They find every reason to add fees and charges to your account. As so called credit union they might as well be Wells Fargo. Customer service at this location is just as lack luster. Employees do not seem to care for there patrons.
