Back in the past we were warned to stay away from 1st Ave above 86th street at night, and it was justified as at times we saw fights in bodegas, gun shots, cops chasing thugs, and more. It has developed since then to be safe community offering many terrific restaurants, bars, shopping, museums, even speakeasies and some fun nightlife options. With the Q subway line now here on 2nd Ave, the best line in the city, it offers easy access to all parts of Manhattan down to Coney Island. There is a nice mix of old and new here, along with affordable apartments if you hunt a bit. It's really more of a residential area with plenty of parents with kids, schools, dogs, and a few minutes walk to Central Park, and the East River Esplanade. Its also a great place for younger single folks to live as its very walkable too with enough bars and spots to mingle.

We are a close community of residents and businesses. Recently when Yorkville Bagel Cafe closed every business in the neighborhood was upset and talking about it. Our community of businesses survived the Second Avenue Subway Construction for years. Then we had a rough go with the COVID outbreak trying to survive by changing our behavior. Businesses spent a lot of money and followed regulations for outdoor dining. Anything to keep us safe. I'm glad I live in my Yorkville Zip Code. I'm so proud of my neighborhood I used to take visiting Yelp friends on what I called my "Yorkville Tour." I'm highly recommending this neighborhood for young and elderly alike. We'll walk through El Barrio on our way to Costco and nosh on street food and flavored ice from the carts you'll find on the corners. View some amazing art and graffiti on sides of buildings and park areas. Plus, there are plenty of cheapo stores here to pick up things for the kitchen and bathroom. There's a lot of history and culture up here, so don't be fearful of exploring the area.

The community is noted for its contributions to Latin and Salsa Music. East Harlem also includes the area formerly known as Italian Harlem, very few remnants of a once predominantly Italian Community remain. I have spent many a beautiful day walking miles through East Harlem. This community is full of beauty and culturally diverse activity. Schools and children were plentiful early in the morning. While they are in school the streets fill with shoppers and elderly attending community programs. This area has many Government Funded Housing Complexes. There are lots of city Parks and Community Centers. The schools are colorful and plentiful. You will see all ages in the streets busy with their daily life. I love finding new small businesses during my walks. Baked goods and fried chicken are two of my favorites. On the West Side of East Harlem along Fifth Avenue there are Museums. Museo Del Barrio being my favorite. There's Lots of Food in this neighborhood consisting of many cultures! You're hurting yourself if you can't find something to eat. Read the Yelp reviews. When the weather is nice you'll see me traveling through this community. The Graffiti is fantastic. I love to photograph the beautiful art work. In 1973, DJ Kool Herc spun at a birthday party there, used two of the same record and looped the drum break, created the breakbeat or "Merry-Go-Round", and then birthed the the global sub-culture that I, and so many others, love so much today. Don't believe me? Check Sedgwick's secondary name, Hip-Hop Boulevard, and do a search or two and read up on your history. Aside from the street sign, the building doesn't offer much aside from resident housing. So it's perfect when I have a hour to kill before my car is ready. The small businesses here are great to visit. Most, if not all, are family-owned and run. The Cookery is a great farm to table establishment. They have an awesome menu that changes with the season. Harper's Bar and Restaurant is another really good place to eat. They offer dining specials like half-price wine bottles. Cedar Street Grill is so good. I love their happy hour with discounts on their food and drinks but even without the money off their food is really good. After my run and sometimes even after I finish at the gym in Yonkers I take the drive to Raw Juice. Their juices hit the spot! They have super fresh ingredients and they serve up your order quickly. It pays to grab a shot also. Their Wheat Grass shot tastes sooo good. It's sweet. Sweet! New York Bagel Authority serves up some sexy sandwiches, made to order. My go-to is an Everything w/Lox and CC, Onion and Capers. Yaaas. The Dawg House dishes up some interesting gourmet hot dogs. The loyalty card is you friend there so pick one up with your order. Another good visit is Sushi Mike's. Very fresh seafood and awesome specials. The price is definitely suited for Dobbs Ferry but the food is unmistakably good and staff is very attentive. We've visited Cedar Smoke which is a nice smoke shop with every vape that you would want. There are a few boutiques with unique fashion options. I really love this sleepy village. It's so quiet yet fulfilling. Sounds stupid but you really want for nothing when you stop by.

Love the main stretch of Broadway where you'll find all types of shopping, stores, bars, movie theaters, and places to eat. There are famous museums in the neighborhood such as the Museum of Natural History, also Lincoln Center for Arts, and Riverside Park where I've done some races at. Plus, at many of the cross streets on Broadway they have seating areas with benches which I think is pretty cool. We've sat and chatted on these as traffic drives by in each direction. I do like that this part of town has kept much of it's old school architecture especially with its brownstones which are such an iconic NYC thing. As such, apartment rentals usually average on the higher side here as compared to the East Side/Yorkville area. The main MTA subway 1,2,3 Red lines serve this neighborhood, along with the A, B, C, D Blue/Orange lines.

I don't see as many old buildings being torn down to make way for high rise buildings. I think the West Side residents are into historic preservation more than my modern community on the Upper East Side.
