At the western edge of Ohio is the town of Greenville, home to the Green Wave, an awesome consignment store, and one of the most delightful restaurants I've ever been to - Jack's Cabin. Co-owned by Jeremy (J) and Carisa (C), and staffed by their son Austin (A) and Kaylie (K), this is the quintessential family restaurant. I enjoyed their corned beef and eggs, amazing fried flounder and cod - and before heading out from my two day respite in Greenville - their Philly Cheesesteak Skillet. Every dish was a hit, hot, and the perfect comfort foods were one to camp indoors. And like a true family restaurant, I felt fair prices all around, such that I kept coming back and tipping in turn instead! Alongside the black bears that peek all around the room, each table also has a personalized figurine featuring camping awesomeness like fishing, wildlife, and just a general vibe of nature. And the grease/oil has needed to be changed for quite a while. My fish tasted bland and mostly if burnt oil. The fries were over saturated and tasted just like the bland fish. My mother ordered a tenderloin sandwich that also looked burnt to a crisp. Lesson learned here: order NOTHING that goes into a fryer. And apparently order nothing grilled, because it will get fried, too. The wait staff was brand new and was having some trouble figuring out our order. While my coffee cup was empty, everyone else around me was being asked by Ida if they wanted more coffee. All while I continued to wait for my coffee. I could have hollered out, "I'll take some"! The kind of place with a few locals sitting at a booth having their morning coffee, one of the waitresses offering Jim the last donut because they know he will want it. He accepts it. This is, in my mind, a classic American small town diner. The kind of place I grew up, eating in my hometown of 500 people. It's not high cuisine, there's nothing fancy about the food although I did come across a few things I had never seen before on the menu. Fried mush. Meat grits specials, like the scuttle butt and the chili Bob. An age old, but perfected recipe of eggs, meat, cheese, and a starch either potatoes ( homefries) or toast. The coffee is weak and not much flavor to it but, to be honest, it's exactly what you would expect in a place like this and there's something comforting about that. Honest, simple food made day and a day out, catering to the local crowd and a few roadway, travelers like myself who happen to come across it. There's a certain charm and depth to places like this that have been lived in day and day out by the same people for decades. For those like up rounded, there's the nostalgia and connection to the many other people having the same experience day after day in communities across the United States. Forgive me if I wax nostalgia can get a little sentimental here, but this morning's dining experience definitely elicited that for me. It has been years since my last visit so I was happy to see the clean patio with umbrella covered tables. The interior has that classic dive bar feel with beer signs and booths filled with regulars who know the staff by name. Our order comprised of a breakfast sandwich filled with Winner's sausage, Mofo omelette and The Andy Omelette (filled with ham, cheese and onions). We were pleased with the lack of grease found in the omelettes and crisp veggies. The prices are hard to beat with breakfast costing you anywhere from $4-$7. The cherry on top from the whole experience was the great customer service from the owner. He was the perfect balance of cozy hospitality yet gave us time and space to chow down at our own pace.
