Kolton has always been super amazing! He's very professional and has always taken good care of me as a student. He's also super patient and supportive with me. I've been fighting with the effect of trauma for years, and he's always patient and gives me the time I need aside. I don't feel pushed in this studio. We've been members of this studio for over a year and absolutely love it and highly recommend! Our boys were 4 and 6 when they first joined and the classes were great for their ages. The instructors Kole and Nick are fantastic and they are also role models to the other kids that help out in the class who are all so great with the kids. Dishonest business practices - skimming off the top. I called him out on several days that were billed, but classes were cancelled, instead they insist that they deserve free PTO for these days outside the time off in the contract. When clearly pointing this out, the owner lost his cool at me and kicked my kids out of his studio mid-class. The owner is not a role model for your kids, or someone you want teaching or being a mentor to them. Hothead instructors will generate hothead students. Look at what happened to the little girl from the other review who spit on the mat, which I agree is wrong, it was clearly handled horribly. They clearly have no idea how to handle small children. This started with a simple email inquiry on billing, asking them to pro-rate a refund for excess days cancelled in December. This was based off the time off schedule outlined in THEIR OWN contract. The owner refused to answer my questions in email, saying he would only talk in person - typically the sign of shady business doings. I ended up going into his office to talk to him, where I brought up these excess cancellations and inquiring how they would be addressed. He attempted to blow right past my actual concern, but I insisted that they actually be addressed. This is when the owner got visibly and verbally upset at me, raising his voice in attempted intimidation. I don't like being talked to this way, so I went to the lobby and sat down to watch my kids. He followed me out asking that we go through the December calendar together, which was a great idea. Upon reviewing I was able to clearly demonstrate that there are two unaccounted days in December with no current plan for financial reimbursement or make-up days. This is when the owner explained again that these cancellations were tied to a death in the family. I certainly understand that these unfortunate things come up that require time off, but businesses still need to honor their contracts and agreements, or make it right to customers when they don't deliver the services paid for. Instead, he decided to give them PTO outside the contract and act like it was completely acceptable, while trying to make it appear to parents like it didn't happen. Having an instructor needing time off wouldn't be an issue at most studios as there is still coverage from other instructors. The two instructors at this location have a relationship where when one needs to take the day off, both do. This was their decision on how to structure their business, but this isn't a reason not to honor your own contract. Looking over date ranges with the owner on his laptop it became blatantly obvious to him that what I was pointing out about the contract not being fulfilled was indeed correct. You could see the realization on his face clear as day, that I knew what was going on. He then looked in my eyes and made a deep personal attack at me based on personal information I had previously shared with him - an atrocious and repugnant act. I expect an order of magnitude better mental agility and performance from a black belt karate instructor, in their own studio, in front of their clients, with students around. The owner then proceeded to tell me that he was terminating our membership and escorted me out of the building rambling on about lawsuits - I have no idea why he brought this up, he likely recognized his horrible behavior and feared legal action because of it. He then went in and had the other instructor tell my children that I was being rude to them and lead them out in front of the class - a cowardly attempt to make my children upset at me for this outcome. I'm glad it happened as it was a good teaching moment for them in honest business practices, contracts, and general customer support. I only wanted the owner to honor his contract for services I'm paying for. Really, that's it. There are plenty of great studios out there with honorable business practices. There are also plenty of great studios out there with instructors that are mentally prepared to grow your children through demonstration of self-control. The way my family was treated is unacceptable, and I wouldn't advise anyone to hire such a hot head as an instructor, especially to help mentor their children. read more

Bobby Lawrence Karate donated gift certificates for our school's fundraiser (Thank you) so my boys were each able to try a month for free. We were impressed with the organization, consistency, competent staff, friendliness, and energy of the place. Compared to the rec center's lessons we were used to, this is more expensive but he explained it is more "comp" than "Rec center" level. We would recommend them for sure. read more

We went to the karate studio for a birthday party and my daughter has never attending a karate class in her life, but then again she's only 5. It was an interesting experience and one thing she did come out of the Karate 101 class was respect. She learned in the hour about respecting others. The kids in the group were attentive and seem to enjoy the activities. Afterwards, they celebrated with cake and presents for the birthday boy. It was fun! read more

Koleton and Nick do such a great job with my kids. We've been attending classes for a couple of years now, they are helpful and friendly. My boys love learning the moves and the discipline. We were able to try it out for free for a period of time, when we were determining if karate training was for us or not. We found out that it does build confidence. I have been training at Bobby Lawrence Karate with Mr. Ruano since I was 9 years old (I'm 29 now) and the instruction I've received has had a profound impact on my life both mentally and physically. When I started training in the martial arts I was shy, lacked confidence, and was one of those kids that "ran around crazy" and was "all over the place". Karate training provided a positive outlet for my energy and taught me to focus and concentrate.
