Can I take a minute to give a big shout out to my dojo! I've been studying here at WestWind for the past 5.5 years now, and little did I know how much it would change my life. I came into contact with the studio at the What Women Want Expo in April of 2017, and Mr. Kaneshiro, our head master of all three schools (Midvale, Sandy, and Kearns) was giving out VIP cards and had the promo of try a free month of karate for Women's month when you buy a gi ($20). I thought I'd try it for just the month, and a month got me interested enough to try a year. I didn't think I'd stay past a year, but here I am 5.5 years later having grown mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually and still working towards my black belt. To say this dojo has been life changing is an understatement for me, as I am not the same person who started 5.5 years ago. I have gained so much more confidence in myself as a person, and have learned to let go of a lot of the unnecessary junk that weighs one down in the day to day. I've also learned curriculum, which is broken down in each rank, continue to work on katas, and have been creating my own techniques, as required in the higher ranks. WestWind also has an annual Challenge (inter-school tournament) that challenges one to step outside their comfort zone to try something new or overcome the fear or performing in front of others. Our school is broken down into Early & Basic Skills (ages 3-6 y/o) and Karate 7 y/o+. It's great getting to learn alongside children and adults. You learn a great deal of control in the process. WWKS also has weapons and other techniques seminars throughout the year to prepare for disarming and future technique creations (for higher ranks). I can't say enough good things about the teaching and senseis (instructors). They really take the time to help you understand your movements, and they care about you personally. A quick addition to my review (3-24-20). Currently, we are all experiencing extraordinary circumstances with COVID-19. Mr. K and his staff have been exemplary, adjusting to the incredible circumstances laid out in front of us all. Westwind has put out a set of fantastic videos for our kids to do at home (for all ability levels and classes), and they are genuinely concerned about the well-being of all of their students and families. If I could give Mr. K and his staff twelve stars, I would. Truly a great group to be associated with. My review for Westwind Karate is long overdue. We joined Westwind this last July; my wife and I were looking for an activity that both our kids could do together and that would incorporate activity and discipline. I have a three-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter and quite honestly, I have nothing but positive things to say about our experience. Mr. Kaneshiro and his staff (especially Mr. Gurney, who works most consistently with my kids) are an amazing group. Everyone is always positive and very good with the kids. They make karate fun, make it sociable and keep the kids motivated with new tabs for their belts (they give different colored tabs for different skill sets as you work toward a higher belt - my kids really look forward to it). Everyone is very encouraging, and the instructors even address young kids (i.e., my three-year-old) as Sir or Ma'am. My kids have now worked their way up from white belts to purple belts and they will be testing for their blue belts at the end of March. We have seen such growth in a number of areas in both of my kids. They have always been active and athletic, skiing, bike riding, swimming, etc. Karate has been a great means of keeping them increasingly active, while showing them practical and real-world applications of respect. They are always taught to bow when leaving the main room, always give high fives and bow to one another after an activity and, once you reach the purple belt level you can be chosen to close out class by leading the class in the recital of the school creed. I can't recommend highly enough, Westwind Karate. If you have thought about enrolling yourself or your children in an activity that is well rounded with skills and values applicable to real life, this is it. This Karate school is amazing, the teaching techniques are the best, our little boy loves his Karate lessons, best Karate school ever !

My nephew asked me to come with him to the buddy week classes. I did because I would do anything for this kid. I was greeted with an aggressive sales push and the have not stopped hounding me since. The class was okay, but if it is not something you want to dedicate your life to, there might be better places to go. My nephew was hoping to gain confidence and after getting a black eye from getting hit in the face during one of the exercises he decided maybe this was not the best activity for his skill set. Westwind is inflexible in the policies and expensive so he is in a situation where he can either keep going to classes where he is nervous he will get hurt or stay home and still pay them. Find another studio that cares more about their students than how much they can charge you. read more

My daughters have been with West Wind for the last 3 and a half years and have practically grown up at the dojo. We absolutely love WWK. The instructors are all amazing and do more than just teach arm and leg motions. They instill values, motivation, and self confidence. We could not be more happy. The Sandy facility is clean and professional. Upstairs is the reception area and offices. The actual dojo is downstairs and broken in to two rooms one for the upper belts and one for the younger kids. Classes are split up by skill/belt not age. This is a great plus in my opinion. My kids get to interact with students younger than them all the way to adults. They get the opportunity to help teach people older than them because they are high belts and get help/instruction from kids younger than them. WWK offers multiple class times during the week and specialty classes a few times a month. With a longer commitment you can join the black belt club and attend as many classes as you like as well as take the extra classes for free or for a discount. My 8 year old son has been with WestWind Karate for a year now and he absolutely loves it. Not only is he learning fun karate techniques and how to defend himself but he is also learning self-discipline, respect, and important lifelong values.
