My husband and I were in the area on a Wednesday afternoon. He had been to Bob O's before but it had been a few years. This was my first time. We ordered a dog, a beef, cheese fries and a drink. All of that food and a drink came in under $20. The hotdog was good, the beef was really good and the cheese fries, they were the best cheese fries I had in a long time. They were excellent. I've been coming here for a very long time. I would love to give it 5 stars, but here is my beef with this place (pun intended)! Their beef is very inconsistent as far as the flavor goes. There are days where you understand why it's one of the better beef's in Chicago, and other days where it's really a disappointment! And my opinion seems to be shared by a lot of people I've turned on to Bob-O's over the past few years who share the same sentiment. Why is it that some days, the beef taste great, while on other days it's bland and tasteless? Most of their competitors tend to be pretty consistent, but not here. I've noticed that the later in the day that you order from here, the blander it seems to get. It's as if the beef juice is getting more watered down after each and every hour. True blue Chicago Italian beef stand. They recently won the well deserved BEST Italian beef in Chicago in a major real deal contest against the best of the best north to south across the city. Italian beef is my go to there but I soon love their true Chicago hot dogs. I imagine they could run up against any dog in the city. Their Italian beef however is no joke. Thinly sliced, rightly seasoned and stuffed into a real roll (I believe Turano) that holds it all together even after a good dunk into the juice. In a time when so many beef stands are getting skimpy Bob-O's still gives a generous portion of delicious well seasoned Italian Beef on their sammich. They're not skimpy for sure. Gotta get it dipped for the real taste. Even though gardiniera is my go to today I topped it with really good sweet green and red peppers. Scrumptious! Ah alas I missed my gardiniera peppers and hot oil so I second thought myself and ordered a side. Yep, just as I thought, it turned an already scrumptious sammich into an orgy in my mouth! I walked out the right way; with beef juice all over my nice t-shirt. Their fries are a heaping bag full enough for two- tree people. They're cooked just right skin on, slightly dark, lightly salted, and full of flavor. Plenty of crispy slightly burnt edge pieces in the bag for that great crunch to go along with the softer fry. Their staff is friendly and straight forward and know their business. I wouldn't cause trouble in this place on a late night because these guys look like they can handle business. But man do they know their beefs and dogs. They also have a full menu of other great sammiches and sides. Nothing here is bad. The price is right for what you get. I know some folks like to whine about the price but where else ya gonna go get an excellent well sized beef for 8 bucks? Nowhere! Thats where. So quit your whining and recognize the real deal Bob-O's is. Put out 12 bucks and some change for a huge excellent beef and more fries than I should have eaten. Anywhere else would have robbed me. The decor is old school Chicago dog stand with a wrap around stainless steel counter to sit at on a red fixed to the floor swivel chair. Like the kind they had when you were a kid and spun around on the chair. Outside they have a few great picnic tables to enjoy the air while chowing down. If you're in the mood, grab your grub to go and drive a few blocks west to Schiller Woods where there's plenty of outdoor seat. Oh yeah, and they got parking. Which is always a huge plus these days. I've tried their other location on N. Milwaukee Ave but I wanted to try the original store. The guy behind the counter was jovial and nice. I ordered the Italian Beef, fries and a soda. As this is a cash only place, I was grateful I had the cash on me. There is an ATM just in case you need it. The dining area is mostly stool sitting, as I'm short I couldn't get comfortable. I hate when my legs dangle with no bar. I received my dipped Italian beef and it had a nice garlic and a little peppery taste. The meat was extremely tender and the peppers had a good heat to them. I grew up in this part of Chicago and started coming to Bobo's in the early 70's, before the current family ownership of the past 50 years. Back then it was just hot dogs. Never a serious Beef contender like they are now. Been back many times the past 50 years and always satisfied, about a 4... But I must say the Cheesy Beef I had, sweet and wet, with a side of Marinara sauce was the Best Beef Sammy I can remember...better than the original cheesy beef from Original Joe's (directly across the street in the early '70's), as far as I can remember. I was so very disappointed with the food I got. I went there yesterday (Monday) and got a chardog, a soggy, and 2 tamales. Both the chardog and tamales looked and tasted like they were leftover from Saturday because they were so dried out. The soggy was that but had no taste other than being hot (spicy) with way too much oregano. I wish I would have taken a picture of the chardog but I was hungry and with the fries and Pepsi I was able to get it down.The only thing I enjoyed were the fries. I've had better beefs and the guy at the front counter was kind of rude. I'm not sure if that's the neighborhood vibe they are trying to make but I was waiting for my food and he was the same to other customers. The man behind the counter couldn't have been nicer to me...and to everyone coming through the door at the lunch rush. He spotted me as a first-timer. He was very kind and walked me through the order process. The beef sandwich was excellent. I sat there on one of the stools listening to him chat with the customers. Most were regulars. My wife had happen to find this restaurant through Yelp search while I was looking to have Italian Beef sandwich on Memorial Day Monday while my favorite place, Johnnie's Beef in Elmwood Park, was closed. I hadn't heard about Bob-O's prior to my visit. From the Yelp reviews, I noticed that they are known for their Italian Beef sandwich and it seemed like a popular spot among the locals. When he got here, it was semi-busy. The weather was nice. So, most of the people were outside dining on the patio. The inside has limited sitting room. Their menu had a good variety of items to choose from. I ordered their Italian Beef sandwich with hot giardinera and dipped in the au jus. My wife ordered the Maxwell Street Polish with all the trimmings and fries and my son had a vanilla soft-serve cone. The Beef sandwich was big and loaded. It looked good. I liked its flavor but its texture left me wanting for something better. The beef was kind of dry and they did not dip the sandwich in the au jus like I had asked for. I suppose I could have asked them again but I didn't. My wife like the Maxwell Street Polish and fries she had. The fries were well prepared. The Italian Combo with hot peppers is probably one of the top 5 best beefs ever. The fries are homemade but way too large and only come in 1 size. They should make a smaller size for half he price. Hubby had a craving for a Maxwell St Polish tonight. Thanks Yelp for helping us find Bob-O's! It sure beat driving downtown. Bob-O's is just east of Cumberland on Irving Park Rd. with a small parking lot and street parking. They're open for carry out. We tried a variety of items on their very straight forward menu. Polish, char hotdog, cheese burger, pizza bread, fries, chili cheese fries and a pizza puff. The dogs come with fries, burgers do not. Service was prompt except for the cheeseburger they forgot to ring up. Luckily, we checked our bags in the car before driving off. We waited a few extra minutes to make the cheeseburger and then we were on our way! We dug into the chili cheese fries in the car, couldn't wait! Let me start by saying I was expecting something GREAT from this place but that was not the case. I get my beefs wet and even with that, their beef was dry like the meat was dry, tough even. This is one of those spots where cheese just might help improve the beef but, as of late, if I can't eat it without cheese I don't want it lol. Now, I do believe that restaurants can just have bad days and that does not necessarily mean that the food is consistently bad. That being said, I would try them again but I would have to already be in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way and take the long drive just to be taking it.
