This little divey diner is one of Akron's hidden gems. I'm not sure if it's the best burger I have ever eaten, but it's up there. It's the epitome of no-frills dining, so you have to be ok with a little grease and grime. The inside appears to have never been updated, but it adds to the charm. I had a burger and fries and a milkshake and was really happy with everything. The waitress was nice-ish, but I imagine the regulars she has to deal with working there, so I can't blame her for a little bit of crassness. Everything on the menu is very reasonably priced. One thing worth noting, the bathroom situation is not that great. They are accessed from the outside of the building, old gas station style with a key, so I recommend just holding it if you can. This place is an Akron institution! A must-eat if you are looking for the quintessential Akron spots. A no-frills, old fashioned diner with great burgers and fries. The burgers don't have any "special" ingredients. Just good, old-fashioned burgers and fresh cut fries. Warning: when you get there you will wonder if it's at the right place. The building looks very run down and very small. The neighborhood seems very sketchy. To me, that just adds to the ambiance and feel. Once you get inside it is much nicer. I loved it! I always put fries on any sandwich I get, no matter where it is. I was pleasantly surprised to find they had a burger that already includes the fries on it! It was very good. Not life-changing, but exactly what I want when I think of a good, no-frills burger. Lastly, the price definitely makes this a no-brainer 5 star. Burgers for $4 or $5! We stopped here after hiking around CVNP for a few hours. A great little hole-in-the-wall place with good burgers, fries and onion rings. After visiting this place a couple times now, I have to determine that it's just not for me. I can see that it's a neighborhood standby, and there's something to be said for a restaurant that's been in business as long as this one, but it just doesn't meet the mark for me personally. Upon my first visit, it was extremely busy and maybe understaffed. I sat patiently for about 15 minutes without being greeted and ended up leaving when no one so much as hollered in my direction. I chalk this up to them just having an off day, everyone's entitled to one now and again. However, it took a while for me to work up the gumption to visit again, not knowing if I was going to have the same experience. My most recent experience was much better in terms of service, but I still get the feeling that this place caters to mostly regulars. Both times that I visited, I wasn't greeted with more than stares upon walking in the door, and it wasn't until I seated myself and grabbed a menu that I was greeted. For such a small restaurant, you'd think there's be a friendlier vibe, and perhaps there is for regulars, but for those visiting for the first time it might be a little off-putting. Secondly, one positive is that I do appreciate their simplistic menu. I love a place that thrives off of a speciality they do really well, and for this place it's Bob's namesake. The hamburgers are sold as single, double or triple, and it's a typical smashburger style- thrown on the grill without a lot of fanfare. Sides are also simple, mostly fried options to accompany the burgers. My impression of the food as a whole was completely underwhelmed. I found it severely underseasoned, and while I understand that cooking burgers on a seasoned flat-top should provide a nice developed flavor, I have to say that wasn't the case in my experience. The cheeseburger I ordered with accoutrements just tasted bland, and not at all juicy the way I would have expected. Burgers are generally cooked medium to medium well it seems, and while I do think you could kindly ask for them to cook it to order, with as thin patties as they use, you'll generally get something more on the side of medium. I found the onion rings, while nicely crispy, to also be underseasoned, and perhaps I should have ordered some sort of special sauce to accompany them because I was left with a very greasy mouthfeel. All that being said, I have to say that the gentleman handling the grill and serving the bar area during my visit was extremely hospitable. If I were to base my visit solely upon his service, I'd consider revisiting, however there are too many factors working against Bob's from my perspective. I also would mention that the restaurant has a very grungy and greasy feel to it, which doesn't bother me per say, however this combined with the overall dismay I felt in visiting, again didn't work in their favor. This unfortunately isn't a restaurant I would recommend to others, I feel Swenson's is tastier and has friendlier service overall. The one positive is the kind gentleman at the bar along with the extremely affordable prices, but taking into consideration the bland food and dingey interior, I can't determine that's enough of a reason to visit again. TL;DR- hit or miss service, bland food albeit the low price. No marks for comfort or style, not to mention the unwelcoming feel. read more

If I could give a zero star I would. I went to bobs the other day with high hopes because of a friend who sang its praises 20yrs ago. Sadly I arrived to a not so friendly waitress order onion ring and a burger. I somehow instantly received my cold onion rings but waited close to 40 min for the burger that never came. Finally I had to speak up and neither the waitress or new owner/cook could explain or care that I never received my food. I've got friends in Canton and Cleveland, and when we go between them, Bob's Hamburg has become a stopping point. Definitely a dive diner! I'm tall and the low ceilings always make me feel like I need to slouch. This is a real old-school diner. Old-school, like you need to exit the dining room and go outside to get to the bathroom. It's about the size of a neighborhood Dari-whip, small dining room, tables and bar seating. I've actually only had the burgers and the house-made onion rings (and you should too!). Burgers start as meat wads that are smashed into patties with a spatula into their ancient flat-top (right in front of you if you sit at the counter). I can't even imagine how many burgers have been made on that grill over the decades! If you are ever traveling through Akron and crave artery clogging goodness, I whole "heartedly" endorse Bob's. Delectable, scrumptious, savory, dare I say... heavenly? Yes folks these are just some of the words that come to mind as I sit here eating(ok...ok devouring) a burger from Bob's Hamburg. Yes, the burgers are that good. Don't believe me? Well then, how about this. From 1960 to 1997 there used to be this little place right across the street with these big ol' Golden Arches, yup you guessed it...McDonald's! Today Bob's Hamburg is alive and kicking, that other place across the street? Not so much.. That right there tells me Bob's Hamburg has something special going for itself. Now before moving on I have to say this for anyone that's never been to Bob's, it's somewhat of a dive and it is very very small. There are a handful of booths and 8 stools at the countertop that surrounds the grill. Is this a deal breaker? Of course not! The burgers are incredible and for some people like me it's part of the experience. I just want to give a heads up so there's no surprises. You might be better served just calling in for takeout because Bob's can get PACKED! Ok moving on, this year Bob's will be celebrating its 86th year making it Akron's oldest continuously operating restaurant, not many places have those kinds of bragging rights. Bob's has changed hands over time but sits virtually unchanged and Akronites have no problemo with that. Now Bob's isn't a burger only place, they serve breakfast with the usual suspects such as omelets, homefries, waffles, french toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy and much more for under $10! Bob's also offers more than a handful of tasty sandwiches and a nice choice of sides to go along. But I'm here to tell you about the burgers and the burgers are bangin'! Every morning the owner purchases ground beef at the local butcher shop so rest assured the burgers are fresh. Seasonings? Bob's doesn't use em, no salt, no pepper. Well that's just un American you say?! Well not so fast buddy let me explain why. The grill used to cook the burgers is in fact the original grill! Thats 86 years of seasoning plus sausage and bacon are cooked on said grill every morning so there's no need for extra seasonings. Ok so what does Bob's put on their burgers you ask? How about cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Bob's special sauce(pretty sure there's some kind of magic dust used as well). All those toppings on a juicy quarter pound patty tucked into a fresh toasted bun makes for a delightful experience . There's also 6 specialty burgers like the Bonanza loaded with provolone cheese, bacon, barbecue sauce, mayo and lettuce on a single bun, the Ball Park Burger featuring chili, cheddar cheese, fresh chopped onion on a single bun with hot dog and more. Now I've heard whispers around town of Bob's Hamburgers even topping the ever loved Swensons. I'm not even going down that road! I love both places and talk like that can start a food war. I do not eat meat, so I ordered a grilled cheese which I could not eat because it was cooked on the same grill as the hamburgers and had hamburger all over it. I waited over 20 minutes past the time I was told to pick up my order. The girl did not get one of my shakes on the order so after waiting as long as I did, despite it being their mistake she still made me pay for the other shake and the rest of my food sat getting cold while they made it. This is a classic Americana burger joint! Fresh grilled patties. Just meat, no spices. The grill cook knows how to perfectly cook the patties. It is amazing the small size of the cooking griddle! I had the Helen's Skyline Burger. This is a double hamburger with Bob's sauce. It is a red sauce slightly tangy. The sauce was not overpowering and did not cover up the flavor of the patties. French fries were a little soggy. I like them crisp. Service was polite. I live in San Antonio, and anytime I get back to Akron, I visit this great Akron landmark! The meat is picked up daily from the local neighborhood butcher. In addition to a great burger, they offer Coney Dogs with their own secret Coney Sauce. During Lent they offer Lake Perch, Oysters, and all you can eat Cod. My personal favorite is their Home Made Hungarian Sausage! The service is personal and down-home. The building is an old streetcar that has grown in it's 80 years as a diner. We went to this place because of an Entertainment book discount. When we pulled up we were unsure about going in - it's not in a great area of town and looks kinda like a shack in the middle of nowhere. However, when I walked in the staff was nice and greeted me so I figured we'd give it a shot. We sat at a wobbly table and a story on the wall explained the 80 year history of the place - now it felt like an experience. The burger was excellent, the fries were pretty good. They were both served each on a separate little plate and just a paper box for the fries. The fries were hanging over touching the wobbly table. The food was great, the price was good (see my pics of the menu), and it felt like a historical landmark. Those were enough to ignore some of the wobbly bits and feeling that the place was a little less than 100% clean. I'd recommend stopping in at least once! Bob's has consistently popped up as a great hole-in-the-wall burger joint...well, it is a hole for sure. The place was filthy, smelled as if the cleaning crew had not been there for weeks/months. When I walked in there were only 2 people at a table. They were kinda busy with takeout/grub hub orders. I only give this place 3 stars because of my last experience. The first time I drove by and figured I'd stop by for a quick burger at a local spot. The burger and service was very good the first time. They cooked my burger to order and I was in and out of there in 10 minutes or so. But the second time it was about 10 minutes until I was even acknowledged. Shortly after that I was actually asked what I would like to order. I sat there with some other patrons for another 30 minutes or so and they still were filling other orders, I had places to be that day so I had to leave, felt kinda rude to leave not that the employees even knew. The place could also use a good cleaning, look at and above the grill/ flat top, kinda gross. I probably won't be back unless it's during a slow time of day. I can't believe I've been around and worked in the area for many years and never heard of this place. A vendor of mine mentioned it and I had to bring the family. We love mom and pop style dining and this is the definition of that. Like the other reviews, the area is a bit sketchy, so much that my wife didn't want to go in unarmed. We are CCW holders, so no worries. The service was great. The kids and I got milkshakes, and the guy that made them, made sure we were satisfied. My son gave him a big thumbs up and a smile. Cheeseburgers, fries and a fish sandwich all fixed to perfection. We all loved the food, it was greasy, but that's what we wanted. We weren't going there for a fruit salad and tofu. I don't know what's going on but things hit different today. When I walk into a restaurant establishment Im not just a patron but I'm a chef. So it pains me to see the person cooking my burger, smashing the life out of my patties. That's the least of my concerns. I would not have made a review if it wasn't for this next one. I asked the person can they put salt and pepper on patties and their reply was "I'm not allowed to." I've been a chef for the last 9 years, cooking in the industry for 25+. And never had I heard a person say I'm not allowed to make food taste good. And that's what I heard . I'm not allowed to make your food taste good, what I heard was I'm being lazy and don't want to put salt and pepper on it so I'll make some excuse. What I heard was I don't want you in this establishment again so I'm not going to make your food taste good. Went to Bob's at 1PM. ordered a milkshake and two burgers. I drank two milkshakes waiting for my burgers which took an hour and fifteen minutes. after 50 minutes I changed my order to carry out. The cook then blamed me for messing everything up because the waitress didn't label the order properly. So I got to wait while they argued. I was planning to go to a local museum but the wait for hamburgers was too long. I guess I won't be reviewing the museum. Here's a hint. Put a larger griddle in if you are doing that much business. My range at home is bigger than that thing. After my wait the fries are undercooked and soggy. The burger was overcooked and the bun was burned.
