My father is a dentist and looked at the X-rays and explained that I needed one for buildup under the gum lines and this was several years ago, he also explained they are only necessary under certain circumstances and originally I fit that, again 2-3 years ago. I was 52 at the time and never needed one while my dad practicing until I was 45, this is NOT normally needed at all. After months of agonizing pain from 2 crown surgeries from Dr. Gorlin, I ended up having an additional root canal as a result of failed procedures. In addition, I continued to discuss my teeth/pain issues at multiple follow up visits with Dr. Gorlin. However, Dr. Gorlin only determined the pain was due to a root canal from crown surgery. Finally, after a 2nd opinion with an endodontist, it was discussed my crowns were too high. Subsequently, a 3rd opinion with an oral/ maxillofacial surgeon determined the tooth (teeth) were not causing the agonizing pain. Extraction(s) were not required since there were no infection(s) in the tooth (teeth). He diagnosed me with Trigeminal Neuralgia, for which there is no cure - only management of a painful and chronic disease.

In my experience, offices that heavily promote financing can sometimes lean toward high-volume, high-profit treatment plans, so I was cautious but kept an open mind. I was referred by a coworker whose opinion I trust, and since my longtime dentist retired (and his replacement turned over the entire staff within a year), I was genuinely hoping to find a new long-term provider. The office itself is impressive--modern, spotless, and clearly outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. Early on, I met a patient coordinator, Marie, who was friendly and thorough. She reviewed my history and asked detailed questions before they began imaging. That's when things started to feel excessive. I've never had so many X-rays taken in one visit--full mouth, partials, and individual tooth images. The process lasted well over an hour. When the dentist, Dr. Sam, came in, she told me my teeth and gums looked good overall, with the exception of needing one crown. However, the hygienist's assessment was completely different. She recommended extensive periodontal work--something no dentist has ever suggested to me, despite consistent cleanings every 3-4 months. When I asked whether I should see a periodontist, I was told it wasn't necessary because they could perform the treatment in-house "for less." After a 2.5-hour visit, I was presented with a treatment plan exceeding $4,000--along with financing options--and was asked to sign the estimate on the spot. I declined to sign, as I'm aware a signature can carry implications. The reaction to my refusal felt uncomfortable, and they noted "patient refuses to sign" on the document. I grew up in a dental family--my father was a dentist--so I'm familiar with appropriate dental standards. This experience raised enough red flags that I sought a second opinion. Another dentist reviewed the same X-rays and found no need for the extensive work proposed. In fact, the only recommendation was to monitor a different tooth--not the one they wanted to crown. My advice: proceed carefully. Some people love the attention and easy financing. It's not for me.

I went in for my usual 6 month cleaning and there was a definitely a difference. That warm, trusting and caring feeling I used to get was pretty much gone. My hygienist was still the same, but there was definitely a different vibe. After my cleaning was done, the new Dr. came in to see me and I must say it felt extremely awkward. I immediately got the impression that this practice has now become a business that puts money before the client's health and wellbeing. I was not impressed with this new practitioner at all. Well, 6 months later and time for my next cleaning. I had an open mind thinking that this visit may be a little better - giving the new practice a 2nd chance only because of my hygienist. Now, as I've stated, I've been going here for years. I was continuously praised Dr. Wishneff and the hygienist of how great my teeth and gums are -  no problems at all. After my hygienist poked around a little bit measuring gums and all, I now have issues that somehow miraculously appeared within 6 months. Surprise, surprise - these issues are not covered by insurance. To add insult to injury, she was not allowed to proceed with my cleaning unless I received and paid for the additional services.
