The location is so cozy and intimate. I went solo and sat in the bar area, but I could see this being a really nice place for a date. The lighting was low, and the background music made the vibe of this place really nice. The menu is a curated special of tapas I believe. You have a selection of either a small or larger course of tapas. Since I was alone, I opted for the smaller course of tapas. I enjoyed my tapas, but I would have loved to have shared the larger option with a friend. Maybe that means I'll have to come visit again. We went here for our last meal in Barcelona. I had multiple reviews on Yelp to choose the restaurant. I must say that the skeptical review was the most accurate for me. First the really good. The vibe and staff of the restaurant. When you walk in, you feel the really positive energy. People are there to have a good time. And we did enjoy. The not so good: the food. As an elite reviewer wrote on 9/27, the food is inexpensive but frankly, it is not good. She rounded up and I'm rounding down to 3*. There are so many amazingly tapas restaurants in Barcelona. This is absolutely not one of them. There are 2 options, we chose the larger meal. The food is plentiful but frankly, there was no distinctiveness to the offerings. The flavoring, texture and sauces are just not interesting. Meh. The ugly. We came with another couple-there were 4 of us. The restaurant has only 2 tables for 4 people. We arrived around 8 PM and were seated at 9:20. We had a nice conversation for over an hour in line. But frankly, that's way to long. This restaurant is an inexpensive tapas restaurant. I would try a better location with better availability in the Gothic Quarter or anywhere else in Barcelona. read more

It's hard to say I'd "recommend" this place with so many amazing tapas places in Barcelona, but I guess this is a decent place to try if you're looking for a budgeted intro into tapas food. For food you really only have two options with the menu - the prefix with or without the charcuterie board, $40 or $50 respectively. We went with the board. The food was okay, 3 stars at most. Good quantity; definitely a lot of food for two people, but nothing really special in terms of dishes with quality. Perhaps the shrimp and mussel paella might be the highlight for me, and the turkey kabob and the brisket was decent, while the remaining dishes were either bland or completely missed the mark (example: the mustard chicken wasn't appetizing and hard to eat; we didn't have more than one bite). Also the charcuterie board was "just okay," not a lot of variety and quality matched character of the rest of the meal. I felt the prices were fairly reasonable given the quantity and quality. Prices appear on the low side given the quantity of food you get, but perhaps this is like a buffet where they just scoop from the few mass made dishes onto smaller plates prior to brining it to your table -- and hence, "that's the rub." While I certainly wouldn't come back here; if it's your first time in Barcelona and you're looking for an inexpensive crash course into tapas, consider giving this place a go. read more

We chose the 50 euro option. It came with 1 appetizer, a Spanish meat and cheese platter, 8 tapas, and 2 amazing shots. The menu is a surprise and you do not know what tapas or apps you will get. Every person at the restaurant had something different on their plate and everyone was enjoying it. Bodega Biarritz also has a policy that if you do not like something they will change it out. Bodega Biarritz is AMAZING. They hands down have the best food I have ever had, and is also my favorite restaurant I've been to. I travel a lot for work (I'm a flight attendant), and I eat out a good amount, so this is saying a lot in my opinion. The concept of this place is wonderful. Your server (I don't remember who we had but he knows what he's doing) will ask if there are any dietary restrictions at the table. Then, there's an option to do the surprise menu which is what we did. They'll choose tapas that are in your diet, and if you don't like any number of them, they'll send it back and choose a new one for you. Luckily--we loved everything we got. I don't spend a lot of time in Barcelona, but when I go back, I will make it a point to have dinner here again. It is a smaller restaurant and very busy--so be patient while waiting to get seated. Further to a recommendation on Yelp we headed to Bodega on the first night we were in Barcelona around 9pm - there was a long queue so we decided to go elsewhere & try earlier the next night . It was well worth the revisit and only a 15 minute or so wait. The food was excellent , so tasty, beautifully presented & plenty of it & well priced. The restaurant staff were wonderful, very nice , attentive and given it only seats 20 odd people they did not in any way give you the feeling that you should eat quickly & move on. Heard about it on YouTube, wasn't trying to go to tourist trap restaurants while on vacay and heard this was the one to go to and now I know why! They have seating outside and inside was very small but the ambiance was super cute and red lights everywhere. Very romantic but hard to see or take pics! From the hostess to the wait staff they were super friendly and inviting! The menu from what I remember was €40 for 2 people for 1 app and 8 homemade tapas! You don't actually order but rather tell your waiter what you're allergic to or what you don't like and they take care of the rest which was a ok with us! They brought tomato bread and hummus with pita as an app, and out of all the restaurants we tried this place had the best tomato bread. Then for tapas we got prawns in garlic, fish, some sort of beef that was so soft it melted in your mouth, patatas bravas with chicken wings, veggies, octopus and a mini paella dish with shrimp which was so good I wish it was a big paella dish! You know a spot is amazing when there's a line out the door and even the people in line were fun to chat with as well as the servers. Such a welcoming environment on my first night traveling alone with a variety of tapas and drinks to select from. They have a very nice incandescent lighting & decorations inside that has a different vibe at every seating arrangement. It was quite pleasant to spend an evening there upon arriving. They also had a special for 1-2 guests to let you try a wide array of dishes depending on if you'd like the $40 or $50 special or the $20/25 if you're like me and hanging solo for the evening. Highly recommend this spot, I would come earlier in the evening as I noticed the lines getting longer as the night went on. But the servers were always even keeled and welcoming and being completely present with the guests inside. The flavors were also off the charts! & Their Creme brûlée was phenomenal, and their mini paella was so freaking cute, I really enjoyed the mango mojito and looking forward to trying the caipirinha next! This is the best restaurant my wife and I have ever been to, and we are pretty hardcore world travelers/foodies. The "why" is important, so let me explain: -The food itself is out of this world. Their Tapas concept is a surprise menu, and all eight of ours were absolutely delicious. The tapas satisfied every craving we had from the local cuisine, which is all fresh fresh fresh. Best of all, because it's a surprise concept, you will have a new dining experience each time you visit! -The service is great. From the moment you arrive employees are great to get you in, manage expectations for wait time, and check for dietary restrictions. We got there for an American dinner time (super early for Spanish standards), so our wait was mercifully short. NO RESERVATIONS!!! But it's worth the wait, and I normally hate waiting. -The restaurant itself is full of surprises. Although small, the table and bar areas are both really charming - we were so surprised to see a server deliver us our drinks through a window! -As of writing, our meal cost €40 - an absolute steal given the quality and quantity. I would pay double, and indeed a comparable place in the United States would cost triple or even more. In summary, I've spent all this time writing about this place because it needs to be emphasized just how good it is. In the same day, I experienced my first ever Michelin restaurant, but that place was absolutely forgettable in comparison to "Bodega." I wanted to spend my last night in Barcelona eating yummy tapas and I truly found the spot. The wait was only 15 minutes and they gave me a complimentary virgin mojito while I waited. They asked right from the beginning if I had any diet restrictions (which I do), so they provided tapas without shellfish. It was our first night in Barcelona after spending three days in Madrid. We had tapas on our minds. I checked some online recommendations and Bodega Biarritz was well reviewed, being referred to as "cozy" and "a hole in the wall." Sounds like my kind of place. Let's go. We stepped out of our hotel and using the GPS on my phone to navigate we crossed La Rambla into a large plaza where we took some pics before wandering into the Gothic Quarter via a narrow alleyway. We followed this until we arrived at Bodega Biarritz. There was a line of people waiting to be seated. We took our place at the back of the queue and were eventually greeted by a hostess who explained how they were a prix fixe restaurant with two different menus to choose from. One had more items than the other. We were trying to live it up on vacation so we picked the more deluxe of the two. While we couldn't choose the items we were going to get, we were promised we could send things back if we didn't like them and the waiter would talk to us about our preferences and make a custom experience. A few minutes later she returned and took our drink orders. We sipped cocktails while waiting about 40 minutes for a spot. When it was our turn to dine we were ushered into a dark, narrow, crowded place. While it looked divey it was more like a high dining place made to look like a hole in the wall. We were seated in a row at a very narrow counter. Courses were brought to us on wooden boards. The waiter never talked to us about our preferences, and may have been telling us what was on each course, but we couldn't hear over the eclectic playlist booming over the speakers. Because we didn't know exactly what we were getting, some things were a guess and try experience. At one point I thought I was about to bite into a potato dish and it was fish. Another time I thought I was getting a croquette. Nope, more fish. There was a lot of fish. The sauces and preparations all seemed to kind of blend together as the meal progressed. It was a lot of fun, and the food was good overall, but the pace was a little rushed. With a long line out the door they were obviously trying to turn tables, er, counter space. At the end we were served "surprise shots." Not much of a surprise, it was Bailey's. We all enjoyed the experience and left adequately full, but felt more like we were in a touristy place than a cozy, out of the way, local spot. Yeah it was in an alley, but everything in the Gothic Quarter is in an alley. If somebody in America wanted to create a premium tapas chain they could use Bodega Biarritz as the blueprint. Its a super cozy place with a small bar. They had prix fixe menu with 7 tapas and drinks for 2. Chef came and asked us on our preference of meat and veggies and prepared 7 custom tapas for us. We loved all the tapas except the quiche which was too cheesy and tasteless. Other than that, all other tapas were top notch. Amidst all the tapas options in Barcelona, we chose to come here per a friend's recommendation. This was EASILY the best meal we had during our trip. Our group of 8 showed up for lunch as soon as they opened and were seated without a wait, no reservation required. Be warned that is a relatively small space and you might be seated separately if you come with a larger group. I loved the fixed menu concept- it was a great way to try dishes I wouldn't have ordered for myself (the savory pastries were my favorite). 4/13/23 With so many options to choose from, I'm so glad we went here! Like other yelpers have said, there is a set menu. $40€ for 2 or 50€ for 2. I believe the 40 option gives you 8 tapas, the 50 option gives you 10. We opted for the €40, as it was our first night in barcelona and we went with another couple who got 8 different tapas and we all just shared the tapas between the 4 of us. 16 different tapas?! YES PLEASE. They ask if there are any dietary restrictions and surprise you with what they choose. So I may not remember all that we got, but I did manage to snap one picture before we all devoured the food set before us. Most items were either a small portion of fish in a sauce, chorizo, duck, but they also give you some vegetarian options as well. All were delicious and savory. The place is small, but SO cute. Hole in the wall? Yes. You will be shoulder to shoulder if at the bar, if you get a table? Lucky you! 1881 reminds me of a cozy bar meets moulin rouge. San nudity. The service was fantastic. They explain everything and answer your questions to the best of their ability. They did not make you feel bad for speaking English, but we did our best with our Spanglish! We were able to get in, but they filled up extremely quickly to the point it was completely filled before we even ordered our food. If you come with a larger group, you will have to wait. The menu is set up ahead of time, so you don't order your own tapas. They have two options, with or without a charcuterie board to start. The charcuterie board is with a slight upcharge. We ended up just getting the regular with tomato bread. You get 7 different tapas. The food was deceptively filling even though it doesn't look huge. The food was delicious. My favorite was the beef, shepherd's pie, and chicken. Everything was super flavorful and the meat was juicy and tender. You can see some people get different items, but this is due to allergies or specific diets, not necessarily a choice. For a drink, I got the mojito. It was refreshing and delicious.
