We visited Bodega on Whyte Road with our baby & our team. We tried to arrive a bit earlier to keep the baby more comfortable, but due to the timing, the music was quite loud, and the baby was very uncomfortable. That said, the food was outstanding, as always. We've been here many times, and our favorites never disappoint. This time, we had beef bites, bore cheeks, bacon-wrapped dates, lamb chops, oysters, and seared scallops. We also enjoyed a delicious dessert. Despite the baby's fuss, the warm atmosphere and attentive service made the evening special. Next time, we'll aim for an earlier booking to avoid the noise. We'll definitely be back! read more

Most people in the city are familiar with Sabor, Edmonton's legendary Spanish and Portuguese restaurant. But have you ever wished that there was a more casual, more low-key version of Sabor? Maybe with multiple conveniently located spots around town? Well you're in luck because that's exactly what Bodega is! You'll find Bodega's flagship restaurant in the lower street level part of Sabor itself, however there are now five other locations. It's almost a guarantee that there is a Bodega near you, no matter where you are. People have loved this place for years. Voted as #1 Best Tapas 2018, #1 Best Spanish 2018, and #1 Best Wine Bar 2018 in VUE Weekly. CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 listed them as Best of Downtown. And you'll find them as a Favourite Communal (Sharing) spot on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list. It turns out that the people of Edmonton love a laid-back tapas moment and getting some sangria into the mix doesn't hurt either. I was excited to visit Bodega's original location in the heart of Downtown on a Saturday evening and to finally experience their flavours. The first thing to note about the OG Bodega restaurant is that they don't take reservations, however all of the other ones do. As previously mentioned, you will find the flagship location right inside of Sabor. Parking can sometimes be tricky in this area and that's the only downside. If you've been to Sabor before you already know how impressive the space is. The huge building is one of those places that doesn't need to pretend to be old because it actually is. Instead of heading up the stairs into Sabor's dining space, Bodega is found to the left of the entrance in the lower street-facing area. It's actually a wonderful use of space which otherwise might not have served much of a purpose. Less dressed up and grand than Sabor (but still bearing a similar decor), Bodega harnesses the Spanish modern-day watering hole vibe by featuring a simple but beautiful bar area and bistro-style al fresco dining in the warmer months. The dining space is small and because there are no reservations taken it might be necessary to prepare for a wait. When my group arrived it took about 15 minutes to be seated which seemed entirely reasonable. We were pleased to be situated at a beautiful little table outdoors, in the warm summer breeze. Unfortunately, there were a lot of bugs flying around that kept landing on our table and we had to ask to be moved to one of the more interior tables. Thankfully the staff was able to accommodate this! We really didn't want the bugs to land in our food. The servers who visited our table were all extraordinarily friendly and gracious. Of course there were going to be drinks! The wine list is plentiful and extensive. However, I was more drawn to the interesting Iberico gin & tonics, caipirinhas, sangria, and the signature cocktails. These are the types of drinks that I picture myself holding on a patio in the summer. From the cocktail list, the De Puta Madre (Mezcal, dry Sherry, pineapple, lemon, orgeat, cocoa powder - $16) sounded like the most special one to me. Out of curiosity, I put the name of this drink into a Spanish to English translator and had a pretty good laugh when I learned that it means Fucking Awesome. Well. Sounds like I made the correct beverage choice! And I really did enjoy sipping on this perfectly crafted cocktail. I was slightly worried that the mezcal would be very strong and boozy, but the balance of the ingredients was lovely. I felt that I was able to taste and appreciate the flavour of the mezcal without it being too overpowering. The fruity and sweet flavours from the pineapple, lemon, and almond syrup made the drink fun, but again it wasn't too sweet either. I loved this cocktail and it paired perfectly with the rest of the meal. The food menu is packed full of options and every single thing sounds enticing. The good news is that the plates are small and part of the experience is to order a lot of them. There's a whole long list of tapas, but also breads, spreads, charcutaria, and cheese if you are in the mood to create an exciting board (I always am!). There are also some larger plates if you are truly looking for one big meal of food. On this visit I was aiming to remain in the tapas realm since that is what this restaurant is actually all about. As such, we proceeded to barrage our server with a long list of items, eager to sample as many dishes as reasonably possible. We were asked if we would prefer to have every dish all at once, but opted for a slow and staggered method. No need to hurry though! It wasn't long before our parade of plates began to arrive. Ive been a fan of sabor since it opened, but I never tried this place because it felt more of a casual dining experience. But its not! Its still classy in every way but has a unique flare I havent had in YEG in a very long time. Service is top notch and stellar. Attentive but not intrusive. Atmosphere is casual chic and quite classy compared to other places at this price point. I came for the lunch special and it did not disappoint! Firstly, the specials are $15 which includes your choice of soup or salad with one of 3 entrees. This is similar to sabors lunch special when it opened! Anyways, the salad was super fresh and the soup was so flavourful! It was a roasted vegtable soup but it had a spicy kick to it. The specials were a spegettini with saffron cream pasta with pulled chicken and a arctic char with roasted brussel sprouts. The fish was stellar, so fresh and cooked perfectly. The pasta was great too but the seafood stole the show! I ended with a delicious creme caramel topped off with a mint jelly! Honestly the flavour combinations were odd at first but they really went well together and gave each dish a unique flare. I could not replicate these dishes at home as they tasted like a sort of portuguese fusion with east indian touch. Sounds strange but it works! My tips. Get those empandillas...those little pockets of goodness are so delightful they brought me back to my travels to spain!!! I finally made my way over to check out Bodega Tapas & Wine Bar by SABOR. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The food were excellent, the wine was divine, and the service exceptional and friendly. Ahi Tuna salad - The tuna was fresh and delicious, the cucumber and green salad was delicious, with a twist of curry in the sauce. Tomatoes Bruschetta - Served with a crunchy baguette and a delicious tomato salad, don't miss out I have to say the Octopus is a delicious dish that is perfectly prepared and is accompanied by a delicious olive tapenade. It melts in your mouth like butter! Even though we were so full, the lobster risotto was the perfect end to a great meal The wine menu was unique and there was a 50% discount on Wednesdays so we enjoyed excellent Spanish wines. The seafood paella had a decent amount of seafood pieces. The Spanish octopus was great, nicely cooked and crispy. We enjoyed the tapenade that came with it. The boar cheeks were perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce. The Piri piri prawns were excellent too, nicely grilled. Stopping in for a drink, I couldn't help but feel a bit of a pilgrim in an unholy land. This is clearly for richer people than I. Seating myself at the nearby bar, I let myself take in the atmosphere: warm (both the lighting and the temperature) retro (think 70s family restaurant)and very very upscale. I was not getting out of here without dropping less than 40 bucks. I was only here because MY bar hadn't opened yet. There is no non-alcoholic beer, but the virgin ceasar is one of the best I have ever tasted. The flavours and spice were perfectly complemented with their house olives. The stuffed peppers were fresh and tasty, despite being ludicrously overstuffed with goat cheese. (I am not a fan of chalk. Your mileage may vary ) Admittedly, the creamiest goat cheese I have ever encountered. The Spanish ham tapas was brilliantly presented, one slice of bread per ham slice, and the bread itself was perfectly toasted and not at all dry. The garnish of butter lettuce was a nice touch, being actually edible. The service was attentive, but also reserved in a way very refreshing to those of us who just want to be left to our own devices. The only problem, such as it was: the price. I loved this place!!! I was looking forward to the 10 tapas and wine for $70 but they don't have it anymore. I had to settle for their regular menu items (it wasn't settling because it was awesome). We ordered a number of dishes, most of which I can't remember the name. Too bad there isn't a website with the menu! But the most memorable was the charcuterie. The board was massive and filled with lots of goodies! There was 4 of us and still lots leftover. Another notable dish was the Devils on horseback. One of the best I've had! Nothing but good things to say about this place. As we entered we were greeted right away. On a Friday night, without reservations its OK to wait for a bit. Once the wait was over, we were escorted to our table by a nice hostess and advised our server will be with us shortly. We ordered the cheese board, Pork Trio, Steak and Lobster and Pappardelle. Everything came quickly and was spot on. Portions were quite generous as well. I really like blue cheese, however my daughter detests it. When we ordered the cheese board, without mentioning anything, our server asked if blue cheese was acceptable, as she noted to us that not everyone is a fan of blue. She offered some alternative cheese choices to replace the blue with. That is what a smart intelligent server does. The pasta in the Pappardelle was Al Dante, the pork cheek was amazingly tender and lobster wasn't over cooked and leathery. The portions were quite generous. My husband and I have gone to bodega a few times and have always enjoyed the delicious food, friendly service and Spanish wine. Most recently, we went for some snacks before a movie and really enjoyed the duck carpaccio and lobster risotto, both were full of taste and we were good portions. Some of the tapas are small and hard to share with more than one person but the dishes are always well cooked, has great flavour and gives an authentic tapas feel. A small group of us went here for after-work beverages and tapas. There are delightful wines to choose from and the tapas selection is extensive. We had bacon wrapped dates, boar cheeks, the crimini mushrooms, the meat & cheese platter and a LOT of bread. All the food we tried was delicious. Upstairs is the restaurant and on the street level is the Bodega. The Bodega has open-air seating during nice weather. There is street parking that you pay for. It's ambiently noisy but not so loud as to impede table discussion. The dress ranges from fairly casual to suited-up. We went on a Wednesday at the after-work hour of 5:00 and found it to be quite busy. At first it appeared we wouldn't be able to get a table, however, in the end we discovered for ourselves a table was available. I note this because the server didn't come back to offer us the table. To be honest, we were close to leaving at the beginning of our experience here because we didn't get any service, no menus, no water, no offer of beverages. However, we were waiting for one more person and had decided that if no service happened by the time of her arrival then we would go somewhere else. Fortunately, more staff appeared and thereafter we had wonderful, friendly service so in the end all was well and it turned out to be food and wine adventure that spanned the evening and we would go back again. read more

I took my love for Bodega downtown for the first time! The bottom portion is Bodega and the upstairs is Sabor. I'd say the Bodega in Highlands is bigger with more table options. We arrived and waited for a table of four to clear up - we were served wine while we waited and multiple servers would come check on us and update us on when they thought a table would clear up. It was great! Pro tip: they don't take reservations. Classic favs always order are the boar cheeks, piri piri prawns, bacon wrapped dates. Tried the duck carpaccio for the first time. AMAZING! Adding it to the fav list. Patatas bravas also yummy with the piri piri sauce. The grilled eggplant was alright - I'll continue to try the side veg options until I find one to add to the musts. The service was great! I'd recommend the DePaula for a red wine. Yum! Bodega is hands down the best restaurant for the quality of food and price. You get amazing and super flavourful food without completely breaking the bank. Plus it's great that the plates are small so you get to eat a bunch of different things! I'm all about next level service. If you go above and beyond then I'm with you for life. I honestly never got to eat there, but I got to sit outside and wait. Front area only accommodates 4 people max. If there's a wait you're out in the cold for 20 minutes at least. If there's a line outside, next level service is someone outside every five minutes updating wait times, apologizing for the wait and maybe suppling a warm festive drink. Blew Our Minds! We went last night for happy hour and 1/2 price bottles of wine which you can't beat! Service was great and we had 6 dishes and 2 bottles of wine throughout the evening. By far the Piri Piri Shrimp was our favourite but everything was sooo good. We started with the Pork Belly and Bacon wrapped dates which both melted in your mouth. Next course was the Crimini Mushrooms and Piri Piri Shrimp. After that we ordered another bottle of wine and the Flaming Portuguese Chorizo followed by the Cheesecake to end the night. Stopped in for dinner. Had the lamb chops, olives, and garlic prawns. The lamb chops and the mint sauce were really good. The kalamata olives in the olive mix were real mushy, but the 2 green olives were good. The prawns had good seasoning on them, but were lukewarm for a hot tapas and had a bit of a shrimpy/fishy taste. Ambiance was nice, not too loud. The white sangria was fruity and juicy. Having been here 5 different times over the past spring/summer, I have to say the quality of the food and service has progressed from being promising, to severely lacking. I used to love coming for the portuguese water bread they used to serve, but on the last few occassions, the bread changed to a regular baguette - even though we confirmed with the servers beforehand (who also always seem to have no knowledge about what they serve or what i'm talking about). I even ordered a sandwich that was supposed to be served on the water bread, and when it arrived, once again, it was on a baguette, and sooooo dry that the tomato sauce they serve it with didn't help in the least. Other disappointments were the wild boar ribs (they had no flavor), the lobster risotto & clams (both too salty) The wine and tapa deals are excellent value -sometimes the tapas are good, othertimes -not. Some of the more memorable ones were piri piri prawns, the beef empanada, anything with chorizo of course is excellent, and the standard tomato, basil, bocconccini skewers are always nice. We always enjoyed having the sangria as well - please note they do serve pitchers but don't advertise it so save yourself money and order a pitcher to start instead of individual glasses - i had to ask after our second round if pitchers were available as the server didn't offer it as an option. As a side note, the manager on duty that addressed the horrible sandwich as per above, also needs some additional skills on how to make the customer happy - he gets points for coming up to the table and bringing up the issue - apologized for the kitchen and offered to buy us another round drinks - but after both having two glasses of sangria each already - we were not in a position to have a third glass so we thanked him and kindly declined. I was hoping that he would've taken off a round of drinks from our bill instead, but not surprisingly, he did not. It would've been so easy for him just to take care of a round but instead I was once again left with a bad impression. So to sum up, I would go back for the tapas deal as it is a good deal - but never again will I order off the menu and risk being let down again. read more

I just visited Bodega with a couple of friends and was very impressed. Their selection of Tapas was very long and had lots of great selection. By far my favorite item that we tasted were the Dates (wrapped in bacon and stuffed with Goats cheese). The waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, as well as had good suggestions. I had the Sangria to drink, which was very good! Reason for 4 stars was because of beer selection (not that you go a place like this for beer), and not because they had bad selection, but because they were out of a couple of their key beers. This place is great!!! I have been in Edmonton 3 times and I always go to Cactus Club but I kinda got sick of it!! I decided to go to Tzin on Jasper and 104 because they got good reviews. After I drove there from west Edmonton and paid $10 for parking I walked into Tzin and I was shocked... What the fuss about?? Tiny place with about 4 tables and a bar that seats FOUR people... Ha? So I asked is there a long wait and the hostess goes "you're looking at 11 o'clock" wow!! It was 6:30, so it was 4.5 hours wait??? The place looked really congested and not very clean!! I was glad to walk away... I wandered through the streets of Edmonton for half hour looking for someplace decent to eat till I stumbled on Bodega. The place is part of a really good restaurant called Sabor Divino with good reviews in its own right. I sat at the bar since I was traveling alone. Great selection of wines and Tapas and the waitress was very friendly and helpful in explaining and recommending food and drinks. I highly recommend the tuna tartar and the red peppers stuffed with sardines and a Rioja wine called Baron De Ley that the waitress recommended and I loved but I tried other wines that were good (a tad expensive though at $18-21 per 9 oz glass). The place was fairly empty around 7 PM but filled up shortly after that the owner/manager had to help the overwhelmed waitress. They also have various specials if you're on a budget. I had never been to Sabor or Bodega before. Unfortunately it was a little bit dead when I went with my friend, so the atmosphere was a bit lacking, but the service was excellent. The food was unreal. We shared the pintxos, which is toasted bread with different toppings. We got the bruschetta and the serrano and manchego pintxos. The combination of the manchego and serrano was perfect - the cheese was creamy and the serving of serrano was generous. We also had the empanadillos, bacon wrapped dates, piri piri prawns and paella. The bacon-wrapped dates are one of the best things I've ever eaten. The only dish we weren't impressed with was the paella, which we ordered with chicken and sausage. It was a bit greasy and didn't pack the kind of punch I was looking for. I haven't been here in over a year and I was happy to be back chilling with my friends in a wonderful and relaxed ambiance with a tall glass of vino. Bodega Tapas and Wine Bar is immediately to your left when you walk into Sabor Divino. The bar is small with limited seating so it isn't great for big groups but it is cozy and intimate - a great date place. I came here on Wine Wednesdays that feature 1/2 price glasses and/or bottles of wine. In my opinion, this is the time to go since a 9 oz glass of wine on average is regularly priced at $18. We ordered the grilled sardines, grilled calamari, bacon wrapped dates and muscles to share between the three of us. My friend is a sardine fan and enjoyed them. I thought they were ok- a little too fishy tasting for my liking. It was a nice change to not have calamari deep-fried in some kind of batter. They were grilled nicely in a lovely tomato sauce with some spices. The texture was firm but not too rubbery so they were enjoyable to eat. The mussels were meaty, however, they could have been more fresh. The red wine sauce with the sautéed onions that they were in was lovely and the toasted bread that accompanied the mussels were perfect for dipping in the sauce. The star dish of the night was the bacon wrapped dates. I am drooling thinking about them again. The saltiness of the bacon with the sweetness of the dates was magic in your mouth! I could have eaten all three myself. Service was very good. The servers were readily checking on us and were very pleasant. Bodega is small and tucked in the corner of Sabor. I went with a friend, who is from Spain, and we both enjoyed the meal and setting. We tried a variety of fabulous tapas with my favourites being the grilled artichokes and the grilled calamari. The artichokes were tiny with a delightful smoked flavour. There was number of wines that were 1/2 price. Although none of the wines on special appealed to me I appreciate the opportunity to get 1/2 price wine : ) The atmosphere was very pleasant and the service was good. What a brutal experience! We stopped in for a night cap on the way home from the Oilers game, we were treated like thieves by the bar staff. One of our friends left, the bartender came running to us and asked if he was coming back or if we were going to look after his beer. We said yes, we were looking after his beer. Then he asked us to pay our tab, we were not done, so we left it open. Then a few minutes later, the other bartender asked us to clear our tab, after a brief exchange of our displeasure, we paid the tab and left. We were at Sabor before the game, our tab was $400, great service and excellent food. But the crappy bar downstairs, stay away! Never again! Nice wine selection and tapas were good especially the oysters and cava special. Definitely will return. Good temptation quantity dessert !

I've been to Bodega before, and the food is very good and easily shareable, but I do have a problem with the wine list. My sister and I noticed there was a rosé under the heading of Sparkling Wine, assuming this would be a sparkling rosé (which is standard fare in wine/tapas bars), but instead I received a flat rosé. Any other restaurant would list a flat rosé under the White Wine heading, as it should be. This is confusing, and I hope the menu is updated. The waitress didn't let me exchange it for something else either. She just gave us a condescending "you should learn how to read" look and asked if I wanted the prosecco instead (but informed us there's no way her boss would take the rosé off the bill). Annoying when it's $16 for a glass and I don't even drink wine that isn't sparkling. We'll still go back because the food is great, and I guess now we know how their unclear wine categorization works. It's a shame I had to enjoy the food with a wine I didn't want, though. read more

I spent the last year of my life in Spain yet I can say without a doubt that The Bodega has some of the best tapas I've ever had. From it's hip yet sophisticated atmosphere to the delicious food (try the bacon wrapped dates and thank me later), the Bodega rivals some of the best tapas bars in my favorite Madrid neighborhoods.
