She came often to check on us and make suggestions for wine and food pairings. Food was fantastic. We ordered the shrimp which came in a delicous sauce and the mussels as well as the meat and cheese board. It filled up four of us nicely. Definately the highlight to the food was shrimp. But everything was tasty and good for sharing. We weren't pressured to leave and that was nice. Wine selection was excellent. And so many things you can try. My only complaint is you have to book email only. I tried booking this in may and no one responded to my emails. Also one time we walked in and tried to see if they had room but they weren't prepared. Please go on open table or something. Or consider people phoning in. Service - Horrendous. We were treated terribly. The server was extremely unwelcoming and could not wait to leave our table. Didn't offer substitutions for wine that was on the menu, was short in communicating and came of generally annoyed that we were even there. We were there for the whole experience and a delicious dinner but ended leaving to have our dinner at an establishment down the street. I can honestly say I have never experienced such and unwelcoming and annoyed server. Note - we were 1 of only 2 tables there that evening. Think Cask of Amontillado, as the setting. Add a fabulous wine selection and a picturesque charcuterie assortment. Cheeses, meats, nuts, crackers, breads, fruits, and pickled things. It's dark, it's intimate and delicious. The service is personal, knowledgeable and interactive but not intrusive. We went after work and indulged but now that we've been we would go back for a date. It's romantic, tasty and beautiful. I have no "buts" or "howevers" to include in this review. The only qualifier is price, it's expensive so we couldn't go all the time but we will go again and again for a treat. read more

Stopped in with my sister for some cheese and wine. First off, this place is hard to find. It's actually located in the pub ( can't remember the exact name but it as pub in the title). U have to walk through the pub to get to The Wine Room. Once there though it's a pretty cool little place. Looks like the inside of a wine barrel! Service was great! It's a little pricy but the wine choices are a plenty. We had a charcuterie board with 2 choices of cheese. It was big enough with a pretty big slice of cheese. It had these tasty roasted almonds as well (yum). If u like cool decor and a dark secret corner to have some nice wine, this is the place for you. It's rather fun so check it out. read more

Greeted and were queried if we had a reservation. Without a reservation we were offered the choice of the front bar, or one of the several tables at the front of the establishment. We selected the hightop for 2. As the night progressed, there wasn't a lot of room for our food trays, but it worked. Presented with an iPad on arrival, we navigated the wine menu, cheese, charcuterie and small plates. We did find the menu frustrating that there was no indication in the User Interface when we had reached the end of a list, and couldn't find dishes we had seen. When we were done, we did find the search and that may have helped us. Gluten free... yes, they have crackers, but not entirely certain of ingredients of the charcuterie. Apparently some come with no labels? Apparently the restaurant seats 40+, and is a lovely decor with an Enomatic system with 24 bottles on tap, white and red. Served and priced by the ounce, you can select your serving size. We found 6 oz. to be perfect for our evening. We ordered the warm goat cheese with proscuitto and basil. It arrived with breads, gluten free crackers and fruits. Next, we ordered a charcuterie board with the bunderfleish, and sopressetta. It arrived with a large variety of nuts, grapes, berries, fruits, beautiful figs, more gluten free crackers and variety of breads for my companion. The sopressetta was sliced a bit thick for enjoyment without cutlery, but we managed to eat it all. The bunderfleish was perfect - we could have enjoyed a double order of that alone. We did find the music to be unique, however overwhelmingly loud as our evening went on. Atmosphere was a little dark, the novel Edison bulbs providing lighting. The curved roof in the rear mimicking the barrel effect was quite interesting. The counter tops were beautifully finished made of wine crates, and the standing bar made of barrels. I am always on the hunt for the best charcuterie in town and I had a friend recommend this place to me after she found it by accident one day while hunting for a drink on Jasper Ave. This by far was one the best executed charcuterie platters that I have had in YEG to date. It is located next to Pub 1905 and is easily missed as the door is actually inside the same entryway as 1905. They do not have traditional hard copy menus here, it is all loaded on to a iPad that allows you to scroll through the choices of wine and charc by variety (Reds, Whites, Soft, Semi-Soft etc.) The system that they use to pour the wine is an air tight delivery so you are able to order samples of any bottle you like by the oz.! I tried an amazing Zinfandel that's name escapes me as I sampled quite a lot... but it was our servers favorite so I am sure he will recommend it again. The décor is amazing and you feel like you are walking into a castle's private cellar as soon as you walk through the door. The ceiling looks like the interior of a wine barrel and took months to complete according to the owner who was very friendly and actually assembled our platter for us. The bar is also very unique with a base of wine barrels and a top that looks like a massive wooden Salvador Dali puzzle. I ordered the triple cream brie, bluebry (a mix of blue cheese and brie) with the wild muskox. (See photo) The platter came with two separate knives; one for my self and one for my partner which is usually one of my biggest pet peeves at other restaurants. I greatly dislike having to share one knife amongst two to three people and mix all of the flavors of the platter together. The brie was as brie should be rich, creamy and velvety in texture but the portion that we were served was very generous compared to others in the city. The Bluebry was a recommendation of our server as I am currently attempting to get on the blue cheese train but often can't handle it on its own. The brie took the edge off and lent a creaminess that complemented the blue perfectly. The wild muskox was absolutely amazing and the star of the platter in my opinion. It was perfectly cured and had a hint of lemony freshness to it. The portion seemed gargantuan as it easily could have been 200 grams and was shaved just the way I like it, velum thin. I had never had muskox before but it had a flavor all to its own that I woke up craving the next day. The vessels chosen to deliver these delights to our palettes were perfectly paired as well. I have been to some establishments that serve their charc on Breton crackers which makes my soul die. Not here though. There was ample fresh baguette, mustard pretzels and a bread crisp that had dried fruit and seeds that matched perfectly. It is a rare occasion that you do not run out of bread and other carriers before you are finished the rest of the platter. Also strewn throughout the platter were roasted nuts, blackberries, figs, miniature grapes and raspberries they helped cut the creaminess perfectly. I only wish that they were open more, they are currently closed Sunday - Tuesday as they just opened in August. I hope that with more regular visits from myself and the rest of Edmonton those hours will extend. For two 1 oz samples, 4 glasses and one platter the total bill for two came to approximately $87.00 plus tip. Very reasonable considering the quality and quantity. There were more cost effective options available for someone on a budget though, we just decided to indulge. I will definitely becoming back here often and hope to see them flourish. read more

The place can easily sit a table for 2 with the largest sitting would be 8-10 in my opinion. Seating however is limited so reservations are recommended. For those who haven't been to the wine room, you could easily miss it if you are looking for large signage. The Wine Room is separate but right next door to a quiet pub of the same owner. Just enter the doorway and enter to the right. First impressions is a beautiful room. Nice seating and very clean. Had a wonderful server who was pleasant and courteous. There are no tv's or overwhelming music in the background - it is truly set-up well. We were greeted and informed of the process in how to order. An iPad was given to us with great instructions from the server. The wine selections change so much that they would be printing menus weekly so they decided to go with the green option by using the iPad. The great thing about the iPad is when tasting a wine, you can receive background information and look at pictures. Wine, cheese, meats and fruits were what we consumed. Each time you order, the chef would come out (don't know if this is for every table) and explain the cheese's & meats. Was a wonderful treat! When ordering we decided to have the server choose a number of wines for us to taste. Wines can be ordered by the ounce which is fantastic. The server chose 6 wines for us. 3 whites,1 rose and 2 reds. Each time he delivered the wine he would give us a rundown on where the wine came from and a description of how it was made and distinct features we would taste. The Wine Room is for anyone whether you have a few dollars or a million dollars. Classy, elegant but also where you can come off of the street and taste wine and not worry about what you are wearing etc. Fantastic place - would recommend going if you love wine & tapas. What a great little gem! I came here last Thursday with a date for drinks and appetizers. You could easily miss it when walking by since the signage isn't very noticeable. It shares the main entrance to Pub 1905. Instead of heading straight, turn left and you will see a grand medieval wooden door which leads you to the wine room. The establishment has an old European feel with a fusion of modern and medieval decor. It is quite dark, maybe a bit too dark for my liking but the soft lighting does create a romantic and cozy mood. Be prepared to spend your moola here as it is not cheap. You can order bottles of wine that range anywhere from $60 to $1300! Or you can sample various enomatic wines anywhere from $3.00 to $10.25 per ounce. We decided to sample a white and red wine. I tried the Waimea Viognier Nelson which is a light fruity white wine and the light velvet red Valpolicella from Veneto, Italy. Both were lovely. We ordered a charcuterie board choosing 2 cheeses and a meat to eat with our wine. Our server recommended the firm cheeses to eat with our red wine so we chose the Cantonnier which was a creamy, medium-strong cheese from Quebec. It really paired well with the Valpolicella. The other cheese we selected was the Manchego cheese from Spain. I felt that the wine really brought out the earthiness of this cheese. It wasn't my favourite but still delicious. And for the meat we chose the Barolo Wine & Peppercorn Salami. It was also very tasty and a good addition to the cheeses. The charcuterie board itself was a display of art. You had tons of crackers, breads, nuts, dates, grapes, olives and peppers to sink your teeth into in addition to the meat and cheeses. My only complaint is that the portion of cheese we received was on the small side. Service was ok. Our server didn't check on us regularly but he did offer us a free sample of wine to end our evening with and that gave him some bonus points in my mind. All in all a very enjoyable evening. I will say that this isn't a place that I would come to regularly. However, it is a great place to come to and treat yourself every once in a while. read more

After hearing great things from a multitude of friends we thought we would check it out with a group of friends. While the wine was great and most of the cheese was pretty decent, the service definitely left a lot to be desired. From a 15 minute wait just to order and then when the wine showed up most were wrong and one person was totally forgotten. I loved this place!! Such an amazing charcuterie board and wine menu. I love that you can order by the ounce which makes it feel like a wine tasting. I highly suggest the cheese fondue and prawns to start! Their menu is on a user friendly iPad which allows you to quickly glide through the different selections and easily maneuver the extensive wine list. The atmosphere is lovely and unique and feels like you're on the inside of a chic wine barrel. I often judge places by their bathrooms and the wine room's bathrooms are top notch! Tried two different wines which were both delicious...Had a charcuterie board with two cheeses and two meats, and tons of fresh fruits and warm breads and crackers! I loved the variety of the board and the fact that they gave us separate plates/cutlery! So much easier to share. We were both full afterwards because the board was so much more than just cheese/meats. The waiter was very helpful and polite as well. I would recommend this little place for a nice date night or a girls night with a few friends! Per ounce of wine it costs between $1.50 to $3.50 on average. The charcuterie board was the most impressive part of the experience. For two people it was $22 for cheese and $22 for meats. It is a little overwhelming to try and choose the meats and cheeses for your board on your own so you can ask your server to bring out the "in house expert" and she will help you decide and custom build the charcuterie for you. We loved the whole board and it was MORE than filling. We were stuffed to the brim after. The in house made honey sausage was TO DIE FOR. It melts in your mouth. My friend Yelp Reservations to book The Wine Room and it was super easy and even sent me a reminder on the booking so I could add to my Yelp calendar and Google calendar. How handy is that?! We did think there would be more food options but it's really all about the wine. Not that I'm complaining, it just wasn't what I expected. We decided to make the most of it and try a few different wines and ordered a charcuterie board while we sampled the vino. You use an iPad to view the options select yourself then hand back to the server who places the food order to the kitchen while she prepares the drinks. Each wine is ordered by the ounce so you really can sample quite a variety while you are there. I didn't feel like my sever knew all that much about the wines we were drinking so it would have been nice to have more wine chat and she took her time bringing them to us. It really wasn't busy so it could have been poured in front of us so we could talk about each one. The cheese board was nice and the fruit, crackers and meats were very tasty. A girlfriend and I wandered into The Wine Room on a Thursday night and were immediately impressed by the decor and the obvious investment made in creating this beautiful atmosphere. The lighting, the casks, the long tasting counter created from wine boxes. I felt like I was at home in a tasting room in California. As excited as I was to experience this beautiful place, the service did NOT match. As we walked in the bartender said, "You can sit there" . No hello, no greeting. After we sat, it took more than 7 or 8minutes for him to get to us- I would expect that if the place was full, but other than the few people at the bar, we were the only table. When he approached our table, again, no greeting simply "been here before?" Handed us an iPad and briefly ran through where to find things on it. I love technology and to be able to peruse all the 36 cheese selections and wine options was great, however the iPad does not replace interacting with your customers and creating an experience for them by exchanging more than instructions. We selected a few wines to try as well as 4 selections for our charcuterie platter. Our glasses were empty more than once during the evening and after 5 or 6 minutes we decided to add a couple more items to our platter. The waiter said " You want MORE?" Ummm....wow...yes, we did want more...should we not be having more food? Felt awkward. We were growing impatient to receive the platter ( +20 minutes, again, not understanding on a very slow night and nothing needed to be cooked....) but when it arrived it was BEAUTIFUL!! Amazing Avonlea cheddar, Bluebry triple cream blue and a semi soft I can't recall. We also had prosciutto, salamini, and Brudenfleisch ( I completely butchered that, but the first meat selection on the menu) that was AMAZING! The music was far too loud for such an intimate environment, which is why perhaps the table beside us, including the owner who was sitting and drinking with his high school friends, felt the need to shout- we learned an awful lot about the 3 of them! :) Another pet peeve is when waitstaff say "Do you need change?" or is all of this for me? Service training is needed. I absolutely LOVED the ability to order many wines one ounce at a time, but I would highly recommend ordering 2-3 wines with 3 ounces at least so you aren't constantly looking for waitstaff. The iPad ordering did NOT work for us, was awkward and annoying to me..I prefer to interact with people. I would certainly give them one more chance , the food, wine and atmosphere were incredible, but the service is SORELY lacking for a place of this high caliber. read more

I've been dying for a place like this to finally come to Edmonton - and on my first visit, it certainly doesn't disappoint. I love the dark, warmly lit, cavern-y appearance of The Wine Room. You truly feel like you're somewhere completely different, and it enhances the experience even more. The wait staff is friendly and down to earth - not at all what you would expect from a place that boasts an extensive wine and cheese list. I can see many people scoffing or being intimidated of the idea of coming to a wine and cheese bar, but it really is an enjoyable and even easy experience. They use iPad menus to automatically order by clicking buttons, allowing customers to browse and read through the well-written menu items on their own terms before making decisions (kudos to whoever wrote the delicious descriptions of each wine, cheese, and meat - it really helped with the decision process). My two girlfriends and I took it as an opportunity to try everything, especially seeing as I imagine most people wouldn't recognize half of the items on The Wine Room's extremely cultivated wine list (separated into type of wine, and then origin) and even more cultivated cheese list (separated on a soft to firm ratio that actually makes things quite easy to figure out). The menu is actually fun to read, and the prices are reasonable, with bottles of wine ranging in price from around $40 to one costly and presumably delicious bottle at $999. There are also small plates available, but my friends and I decided to stick with the cheese and wine motif, and after a couple of glasses each, settled on an affordable bottle of red wine, 3 different types of cheeses, and a cured meat to match. I'll admit I was skeptical as to how much food we would get - I've all too often ordered cheeses from menus only to get a mere sliver sized portion for an inflated cost. The Wine Room did not disappoint on this front - in fact, they kind of blew my mind. It's hard to describe the platter of cheeses, meat, fruits, breads, crackers, and nuts that we received, other than to say it was a feast fit for a king. The wooden board overflowed with beautiful miniature sized grapes, olives, and spiced nuts, all studded around each cheese. There were bread sticks, baguette slices, and crackers to try each cheese in different ways. Let me tell you - it was the perfect meal to eat and share with close friends. We even ended up liking one of the cheeses so much that we ordered it again! I was surprised to be satisfied with the food provided to us - it was enough for a meal. The atmosphere was relatively quiet and relaxed - I'd recommend this place for catching up with friends, having a romantic evening, or just indulging in a mutual love for good food and wine. Despite being billed as a wine tasting establishment, the service stated "this is gonna take awhile" and then we needed to keep reminding that they forgot to bring glasses of wine. As someone who moved away from Edmonton over 15 years ago, I always check out what is new on the food scene when I head back for a visit. I was stunned by the absolute attention to detail with this beautiful wine bar. From the wooden tops of the wine boxes that make up the main counter, to the retro light fixtures, the amazing Iron doors to the cellar and, when you look up, the barrel ceiling. Gorgeous! After perusing the wine/cheese list I was even more impressed. Edmonton, partially due to this Wine bar being added to the scene, has come a long way. Obviously a lot of thought has been put into the development of both the wine and cheese list. Many surprises. The greatest thing is that you can try them all at a reasonable price as they have one of those cool wine preservation systems! Watch out though as you can get into trouble as you are going to want to try them all. Overall a fantastic place and my go to place when I am back in town. read more

We wanted a simple wine and cheese to kick off the weekend and what we found is a new favourite! The Wine Room's price point on the wine, small plates and cheeseboard was just right. We started with the cheese fondue and smoked salmon bruschetta while our four cheese selection was being prepared. The starters were the perfect sizes for sharing for our party of three. As we finished the last of the small plates, the cheese board arrived. The presentation was beautiful and came complete with all the accompaniments we enjoy: olives, bread, fruit, nuts, figs (not honey, however, which we subsequently requested and was delivered without missing a beat). The portions of the quartet of cheeses were, again, portioned perfectly. We chose Redwood smoked cheddar, soft goat with maple, Merlot Bellavitano and Saint Paulin. As for the wine, I was pleased that my favourite Malbec, a Luigi Bosca, was on the wine list. Four ounces came to $12 which was on the steep side if I'm being honest but the glass was just enough to add a tartness to the creaminess of the cheeses. We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to The Wine Room and with the vast selection of both wine and cheese, it looks like we'll be making our way back again and again... read more

Just to even come for the room itself; you feel like you are in Napa. To be able to order wine by the ounce so you can taste it and then try another was amazing. Only thing was it was hard to see where the front door was. You have to go a set of common doors and if you go left you get to The Wine Room and if you go right you go into The PUB. After we ordered 3 bottles of wine, 3 different food dishes we were asked to keep our voices down. We are all professionals who own our own successful businesses and we were not loud or had anything to drink prior to getting there. We have never in our lives experiences such terrible service... My sister in law made a reservation weeks in advance for a Saturday at 7 pm. A friend and I arrived a little bit early and mentioned to the waiter that we had a reservation. He seemed confused and checked the reservation list stating that there was no reservation under our name. My sister in law arrived and showed him her confirmation email. He simply replied that the reservation didn't get sent to them and it wasn't his fault so he couldn't help us out. He came off as very rude and didn't really seem to care if we stayed or left. We asked if we could sit at the bar until a table opened up and he agreed. We sat at the bar for 10 minutes before he came and threw an ipad down on the bar and walked away without a word. The Wine Room specializes (or is supposed to) in higher end wines with knowledgeable staff. My friends and I agreed that if the waiter was going to be rude and avoid talking to us, it would be a waste of time and money to spend the night there. I understand that wires get crossed from time to time but the Wine Room needs to handle these situations better or they won't last long. Such a disappointment as I was really looking forward to this place. Won't be returning. read more
