The Bothy is a place where you can easily down a dram (or five) while diving into hearty plates of homestyle food with a whole lot of refinement. If that alliterative mouthful made no sense, allow me to explain. This restaurant and bar is incredibly unassuming, but as soon as you pull open the door, the atmosphere and ambiance will wash over you like a warm wave of welcome and whisk you away to that dark, dimly lit pub of your wildest dreams. Behind the bar stands a proud and tall wall housing a fairly extensive selection of whisky from all over Scotland. The whisky menu breaks it down by region, and there's a very helpful diagram that will help you choose which of those most suits your palate. Rather than choosing one, the best way to enjoy whisky is to sample a few. The menu has a page of distillery specific flights, but the real gem is the page showing off the staff pick flights. These flights can get spend, so if you're unsure about anything ask the staff. They know their stuff! For food, don't miss the charcuterie selection. Choose 3,4,5 or 6 options from the extensive menu, which also lists the origin of each item, and they'll be served alongside housemade jellies, pickles and mustards! I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try some dry cured smoked bison and venison sausage, both made right here in Alberta. Fantastic! Dinner wise, we had to have haggis! That classic Scottish combo of offal and oats gets bit of elevation by making it into a panfried cake, but you'll still find its classic counterparts or tatties and neeps (puréed carrots and turnips) riding shotgun. Crannican must be ordered for dessert too. Think trifle made with rasberry and chantilly cream, topped with oats. Best of all though was seeing how each Scotch paired with the food. The discovery of the evening had to be the pairing of Islay Scotch and both sharp and creamy cheeses. You'll have to come here to find out how it works though ;)

Every time I'm in Edmonton I MUST come to this place! It's such a hidden gem and anything you order will be amazing but I would especially recommend the mussels and the sausage rolls. I live on Vancouver Island and these are still some of the best mussels I've ever had! But no matter what you get you will not be disappointed with the delicious food, drinks, and friendly service!:)

I was able to check out The Bothy thanks to purchasing a groupon a few months ago. While the menu didn't really speak to me, I purchased the groupon because I was pleasantly surprised that the Bothy was a short 5-minute walk from my place. We arrived at The Bothy on a quite Wednesday evening. The place was small and only had 3 other couples in the room. Since it was Wednesday, we were able to enjoy a bottle of wine at half price. For our entree's I tried the Sous Vide Striploin Steak that came with wine demi-glace, duck fat fried baby potatoes and seasonal vegetables. My husband was brave enough to try the Haggis and I got to sneak in a few bites as well. Both of our dishes were amazing! I could eat here again and again. The Haggis was so delicious, I'll be coming back here to get a plate of my own. This is a great place to visit for a date night. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food.

First of all, a shameful nod 'o the head for not discovering the Bothy ages earlier -- this is the kind of place I rejoiced in finding in the old country (I'm thinking of you, Babbity Bowster, in Glasgow). The Bothy Wine & Whisky Bar is immediately comforting and welcoming; there's everything you expect from a local village public house, and nothing distracting. The staff and visitors all comported themselves with a sort of hush, a reverence around the food and drink we all craved. Let's start with the drink: it's a whisky bar, and so we had every variant of Talisker Scotch (from the Isle of Skye) they had, neat, and we savored and talked about it for a while, as we waited for a couple of dishes to arrive. The food: the pound of PEI mussels done up in white wine & garlic was a perfect rendering of the traditional dish, with a twist of subtle blue cheese sriracha broth, accompanied by the much-loved side of sourdough. The steak and mushroom pie was similarly satisfying in that homey comfort food sort of way, and there's little more to say about it. I'd have either or both of these dishes again in a minute. There's wine, and lots more on the menu, and it'll not be too long before we work our way through those. See you there!

Try the haggis. Mine was served over mashed potato and turnip with decent broccoli. The bucco was a huge serving. No shortage of food here. Service is pleasant. It's quite busy on a Sunday evening. The music was very eclectic. Some metal, then some folk followed by some old pop. Kind of funny. I like this place, but there is something missing from me just loving the place. Maybe if I was getting wasted on Scotch, I'd feel differently. I'm on a booze break right now. I'll revisit the Bothy when I'm ready to get good and loaded.

Small whisky & wine bar kind of hidden in a small shopping plaza off Calgary Trail, but once you get inside it's warm and inviting! Whether you're familiar with whisky or a beginner they have lots of options to try, including tasting flights of various styles. Their best selection is scotch whiskies but they have quite a lot of other options too. I tried an Indian whisky last night which I never knew existed! They also serve food, and while there is some "pub food" type options (like Mac & cheese, and meat pie) there are also more upscale type options including charcuterie boards, whisky glazed chicken, sous-vide sirloin steak with duck fat roast potatoes, and more. Three dessert options also at this time of writing: creme brûlée, sticky toffee pudding, and bananoffee pie. Everything I've tried here has been delicious so far. If this place were on Whyte it would be packed all the time, but it's out of the way enough that I've never had a problem getting a table on a weekday evening. They don't have a lot of space for large groups, at least in the winter, but looks like they add a patio in the summer that would expand capacity. I've been here twice so far and hopefully I'll be back again!

While I would prefer a location that were more transit accessible and which included more non-alchoholic beverage options, the food here is delicious! I really enjoyed my steak and mushroom pie in particular. While this place is not that big, our visit was pretty awesome and included attentive service. I will probably not frequent it all that often because of the location and because I don't drink whiskey/wine, but I will enjoy each visit for the food alone.

Come on in for a flight of Whisky!

Bothy, I love you. I could listen to your folks speak about whisky in those Scottish accents anytime. Ladies... sit at the bar! I stopped in with some friends for a little after dinner drink and a bite of dessert. This spot didn't exist back in my Edmonton days. It's at the far end of a strip mall on Calgary Trail and the inside looks nothing like a place you'd expect in a strip mall. It's quaint (yes, an upgrade from cute!) and cozy, with only a few tables on hand. It makes for a lovely atmosphere. Interested in increasing your whisky knowledge? Sign up for the whisky passport! Not sure you can handle the passport yet? Start out with one of the whisky flights from the back of the menu. Don't forget a piece of gingerbread cake to help clear your palate a little between samples. It's delicious! Whisky is becoming my 6th W (you know, like... who? what? when? where? why? whisky!!)

Most people in the city are familiar with Sabor, Edmonton's legendary Spanish and Portuguese restaurant. But have you ever wished that there was a more casual, more low-key version of Sabor? Maybe with multiple conveniently located spots around town? Well you're in luck because that's exactly what Bodega is! You'll find Bodega's flagship restaurant in the lower street level part of Sabor itself, however there are now five other locations. It's almost a guarantee that there is a Bodega near you, no matter where you are. People have loved this place for years. Voted as #1 Best Tapas 2018, #1 Best Spanish 2018, and #1 Best Wine Bar 2018 in VUE Weekly. CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 listed them as Best of Downtown. And you'll find them as a Favourite Communal (Sharing) spot on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list. It turns out that the people of Edmonton love a laid-back tapas moment and getting some sangria into the mix doesn't hurt either. I was excited to visit Bodega's original location in the heart of Downtown on a Saturday evening and to finally experience their flavours. The first thing to note about the OG Bodega restaurant is that they don't take reservations, however all of the other ones do. As previously mentioned, you will find the flagship location right inside of Sabor. Parking can sometimes be tricky in this area and that's the only downside. If you've been to Sabor before you already know how impressive the space is. The huge building is one of those places that doesn't need to pretend to be old because it actually is. Instead of heading up the stairs into Sabor's dining space, Bodega is found to the left of the entrance in the lower street-facing area. It's actually a wonderful use of space which otherwise might not have served much of a purpose. Less dressed up and grand than Sabor (but still bearing a similar decor), Bodega harnesses the Spanish modern-day watering hole vibe by featuring a simple but beautiful bar area and bistro-style al fresco dining in the warmer months. The dining space is small and because there are no reservations taken it might be necessary to prepare for a wait. When my group arrived it took about 15 minutes to be seated which seemed entirely reasonable. We were pleased to be situated at a beautiful little table outdoors, in the warm summer breeze. Unfortunately, there were a lot of bugs flying around that kept landing on our table and we had to ask to be moved to one of the more interior tables. Thankfully the staff was able to accommodate this! We really didn't want the bugs to land in our food. The servers who visited our table were all extraordinarily friendly and gracious. Of course there were going to be drinks! The wine list is plentiful and extensive. However, I was more drawn to the interesting Iberico gin & tonics, caipirinhas, sangria, and the signature cocktails. These are the types of drinks that I picture myself holding on a patio in the summer. From the cocktail list, the De Puta Madre (Mezcal, dry Sherry, pineapple, lemon, orgeat, cocoa powder - $16) sounded like the most special one to me. Out of curiosity, I put the name of this drink into a Spanish to English translator and had a pretty good laugh when I learned that it means Fucking Awesome. Well. Sounds like I made the correct beverage choice! And I really did enjoy sipping on this perfectly crafted cocktail. I was slightly worried that the mezcal would be very strong and boozy, but the balance of the ingredients was lovely. I felt that I was able to taste and appreciate the flavour of the mezcal without it being too overpowering. The fruity and sweet flavours from the pineapple, lemon, and almond syrup made the drink fun, but again it wasn't too sweet either. I loved this cocktail and it paired perfectly with the rest of the meal. The food menu is packed full of options and every single thing sounds enticing. The good news is that the plates are small and part of the experience is to order a lot of them. There's a whole long list of tapas, but also breads, spreads, charcutaria, and cheese if you are in the mood to create an exciting board (I always am!). There are also some larger plates if you are truly looking for one big meal of food. On this visit I was aiming to remain in the tapas realm since that is what this restaurant is actually all about. As such, we proceeded to barrage our server with a long list of items, eager to sample as many dishes as reasonably possible. We were asked if we would prefer to have every dish all at once, but opted for a slow and staggered method. No need to hurry though! It wasn't long before our parade of plates began to arrive. First was the Brushchetta (Grape tomato and fromage blanc - $14.00). I wouldn't have chosen this dish on my own accord but I saw it pass by on its way to a different table and it caught my eye. The tomatoes looked

Went last Saturday to catch a friend's band play, and I'm so happy I did! It was a gorgeous day-- perfect for a patio sit, and lots of folks were all there for the same purpose, so it was super relaxed and chill. Our server, Mandy, was unrufflable and funny. The perfect server. The manager, David, is really great. Friendly and super welcoming, considering I'd only been once before. I noticed that he was attempting to change out the sandwich board for the band, so asked if I could help (ex art major, with a lot of typography experience). He was happy to let me. So that was fun. :) I had a couple beers and the Italian sausage flatbread pizza. OMG! SO good! And the prices were perfectly respectable. Definitely planning to make this place a regular stop on my relaxing/drinking/socializing rounds now.
