We booked the Bothy for a small Christmas get together and absolutely loved it. The food was delicious, the options we great and very fair priced and the service was very attentive. We also split a few items and they were so accommodating about it- made it easy. All the food was great, I had the duck and it melted in my mouth! The Brussels sprouts were cooked just right too! The atmosphere is cozy and has a lot of character. They also offer nice whisky sampling gift boxes. They range from $50 and up depending who you're thinking of plus they come with a gift card too! The Bothy is a place where you can easily down a dram (or five) while diving into hearty plates of homestyle food with a whole lot of refinement. If that alliterative mouthful made no sense, allow me to explain. This restaurant and bar is incredibly unassuming, but as soon as you pull open the door, the atmosphere and ambiance will wash over you like a warm wave of welcome and whisk you away to that dark, dimly lit pub of your wildest dreams. Behind the bar stands a proud and tall wall housing a fairly extensive selection of whisky from all over Scotland. The whisky menu breaks it down by region, and there's a very helpful diagram that will help you choose which of those most suits your palate. Rather than choosing one, the best way to enjoy whisky is to sample a few. The menu has a page of distillery specific flights, but the real gem is the page showing off the staff pick flights. These flights can get spend, so if you're unsure about anything ask the staff. They know their stuff! For food, don't miss the charcuterie selection. Choose 3,4,5 or 6 options from the extensive menu, which also lists the origin of each item, and they'll be served alongside housemade jellies, pickles and mustards! I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try some dry cured smoked bison and venison sausage, both made right here in Alberta. Fantastic! Dinner wise, we had to have haggis! That classic Scottish combo of offal and oats gets bit of elevation by making it into a panfried cake, but you'll still find its classic counterparts or tatties and neeps (puréed carrots and turnips) riding shotgun. Crannican must be ordered for dessert too. Think trifle made with rasberry and chantilly cream, topped with oats. Best of all though was seeing how each Scotch paired with the food. The discovery of the evening had to be the pairing of Islay Scotch and both sharp and creamy cheeses. You'll have to come here to find out how it works though ;) read more

Every time I'm in Edmonton I MUST come to this place! It's such a hidden gem and anything you order will be amazing but I would especially recommend the mussels and the sausage rolls. I live on Vancouver Island and these are still some of the best mussels I've ever had! Went for a birthday party the other night. Very cool ambience. Maybe not a huge fan of the round tables pushed together, did make it hard to eat. However the service was good and the menu and pricing was good. I was driving so I couldn't try the wine or whiskey flights. I really wanted to! Neat place to have an event, I would go back! I was able to check out The Bothy thanks to purchasing a groupon a few months ago. While the menu didn't really speak to me, I purchased the groupon because I was pleasantly surprised that the Bothy was a short 5-minute walk from my place. We arrived at The Bothy on a quite Wednesday evening. The place was small and only had 3 other couples in the room. Since it was Wednesday, we were able to enjoy a bottle of wine at half price. For our entree's I tried the Sous Vide Striploin Steak that came with wine demi-glace, duck fat fried baby potatoes and seasonal vegetables. My husband was brave enough to try the Haggis and I got to sneak in a few bites as well. Both of our dishes were amazing! I could eat here again and again. The Haggis was so delicious, I'll be coming back here to get a plate of my own. This is a great place to visit for a date night. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food. read more

First of all, a shameful nod 'o the head for not discovering the Bothy ages earlier -- this is the kind of place I rejoiced in finding in the old country (I'm thinking of you, Babbity Bowster, in Glasgow). The Bothy Wine & Whisky Bar is immediately comforting and welcoming; there's everything you expect from a local village public house, and nothing distracting. The staff and visitors all comported themselves with a sort of hush, a reverence around the food and drink we all craved. Let's start with the drink: it's a whisky bar, and so we had every variant of Talisker Scotch (from the Isle of Skye) they had, neat, and we savored and talked about it for a while, as we waited for a couple of dishes to arrive. The food: the pound of PEI mussels done up in white wine & garlic was a perfect rendering of the traditional dish, with a twist of subtle blue cheese sriracha broth, accompanied by the much-loved side of sourdough. The steak and mushroom pie was similarly satisfying in that homey comfort food sort of way, and there's little more to say about it. I'd have either or both of these dishes again in a minute. Try the haggis. Mine was served over mashed potato and turnip with decent broccoli. The bucco was a huge serving. No shortage of food here. Service is pleasant. It's quite busy on a Sunday evening. The music was very eclectic. Some metal, then some folk followed by some old pop. Kind of funny. I like this place, but there is something missing from me just loving the place. Maybe if I was getting wasted on Scotch, I'd feel differently. I'm on a booze break right now. I'll revisit the Bothy when I'm ready to get good and loaded. read more

Small whisky & wine bar kind of hidden in a small shopping plaza off Calgary Trail, but once you get inside it's warm and inviting! Whether you're familiar with whisky or a beginner they have lots of options to try, including tasting flights of various styles. Their best selection is scotch whiskies but they have quite a lot of other options too. I tried an Indian whisky last night which I never knew existed! They also serve food, and while there is some "pub food" type options (like Mac & cheese, and meat pie) there are also more upscale type options including charcuterie boards, whisky glazed chicken, sous-vide sirloin steak with duck fat roast potatoes, and more. Three dessert options also at this time of writing: creme brûlée, sticky toffee pudding, and bananoffee pie. Everything I've tried here has been delicious so far. If this place were on Whyte it would be packed all the time, but it's out of the way enough that I've never had a problem getting a table on a weekday evening. They don't have a lot of space for large groups, at least in the winter, but looks like they add a patio in the summer that would expand capacity. I really enjoyed my steak and mushroom pie in particular. While this place is not that big, our visit was pretty awesome and included attentive service. I stopped in with some friends for a little after dinner drink and a bite of dessert. This spot didn't exist back in my Edmonton days. It's at the far end of a strip mall on Calgary Trail and the inside looks nothing like a place you'd expect in a strip mall. I must certainly add that after going there a few more times, I've had the opportunity to try out the food. Trust me, their savory meat pies are just terrific (you could easily get addicted to the beef and mushroom pie). Also, it's worth adding that they have a Whiskey Card (for $15, price includes a free whiskey glass). My friends and I went restaurant hopping the other day, in early celebration of my birthday and in celebration of my friend Tracie visiting us from Vancouver. Our mission, should we choose to accept it (and we sure did) was to visit three different restaurants in YEG and try appetizers at one restaurant, main course at another, and dessert at a third. With full wallets, empty stomachs, and four hours for our restaurant hopping mission three friends and I set out. First up for appetizers was The Bothy Wine & Whisky Bar. I'll be honest this wasn't my first choice, not that I had anything against The Bothy, but there were a few other restaurants I wanted to try. Unfortunately for those restaurants they didn't open for dinner until 5pm or later, and we were starting our restaurant hopping at 4pm (early yes, but then it's not busy and we would have time to eat and enjoy ourselves). So The Bothy it was. I don't like whisky, or perhaps I should say I had whisky once and didn't like it. I'm pretty sure drinking the cheapest whisky possible at a party when you're 20 (cut with cheap cola) isn't going to give anyone a good impression of this drink. If any place might convince me to try whisky again and like it then it would be a whisky bar like The Bothy. I asked the server for suggestions of a whiskey to try for a newbie and she gave a couple of recommendations and I went with the first (which I believe was the Talisker D.E). It was pretty smooth, and was all right, but I don't think whiskey will ever be my go to drink. I'm much more of a wine or beer girl, but at least I tried. At $13 my glass of whisky was in the middle price range at The Bothy. For appetizers my friends and I shared a charcuterie plate with 4 selections for $24. We chose two cheeses and two meats. There was a triple creme brie from France and an Oka cheese from Quebec. For meats we got the smoked bison from Alberta and a Prosciutto De Parma from Italy. The charcuterie plate was served with baguette slices and four different condiments (a spicy jelly, a wine/berry jelly, a horseradish mustard, and a pesto). Everything was really good, but I really enjoyed the pecorino with the pesto and the bison, brie and wine/berry jelly. The plate isn't huge, but everyone got to try everything, and get seconds too. Considering The Bothy was stop 1 of 3 in our restaurant hop I wasn't worried about going hungry. I had kind of assume The Bothy would be a really dark and dingy hole-in-in-the-wall kind of place, but it isn't. It's not huge, but it's bright and inviting with bright yellow walls and a contrasting maroon. The Bothy didn't really fit with what I expected from a whiskey bar; it exceeded my expectations. Next time I'll be back to try more than just an appetizer. read more

The Bothy has an excellent selection of appetizers that pair wonderfully with their drinks. The chicken pot pie they have there is second to none. It's absolutely delicious. Eclectic but cozy - a great hangout for quiet drinks on a Saturday night. Met up with a gf and proceeded to spend the entire night "eating backwards": 1. We ordered drinks: - Me: a flight of 3 wines - a tempranillo, a syrah and one of my all-time favourites Petite Petit... served in 2 oz portions, the night's winner was actually the syrah. The best part about wine at The Bothy is their use of the Enomatic wine preservation system - every glass tastes fresh and aerated! - Her: a Fruli (bottled Belgian sweet strawberry beer) 2. She ordered a main course: one of the meat pies with a side of soup. Perhaps as a nod to the slow food movement, her meal did seem to take a long time to reach us. 3. She ordered dessert: "something to do with toffee"-type cake. It looked delicious! Coffee was plain old percolated coffee - they don't have an espresso maker at the South side location. 4. I ordered a charcuterie plate to round off the night: smoked bison (waitress' favourite - and well worth it!), beemster and aged cheddar served with crostinis (the perfect balance of crunch to chewiness), pickled mustard seeds, a raspberry jam, a beer mustard and pesto. Absolutely everything on the plate was delicious, save the pesto - I found the balance of flavours a tad off (perhaps could have had more pecorino). Overall, a weekend win! read more

I've been to the Bothy many times and have to say the food quality and the prep is sliding fast over the last 8 months. Cutting corners on qulaity and not adhering to what the menu says a dish is going to be is pretty darn disappointing. Went with 4 people for a dinner three nights ago and was very disappopinted. Beet salad without any beets? Fourpepper carpaccio without any pepper and ridiculously tiny slices of beef? Cajun mussels that one would expect to have some zing, but instead tasted like the broth was a tomatoe soup base? And NO spoice? If you want to eat a lot of arugala and baby spinach and beet leaves, it's a great place. The only dish that saved the night was the blue cheese mussels. And the bread. We let the waitress know, we tipped her 18%, but the owner needs to smarten up.... read more

I have only been here for lunch, so for a weekday lunch spot this is an okay place. I like the lunch menu. There's an assortment of sandwiches, meat pies, and even Mac'n'cheese. The chicken pot pie was very good, I really enjoyed the crust. The tomato and bacon soup was, I'm sorry to say, awful. I had one spoonful, and it was just so overpowering. The only way I can describe it is just a way too much "tang". The service was okay. A little slow with only one server on a Friday at lunch. The place is small, and she did alright. Overall, I would say this is a place to come to when you want some serious comfort food on a cold winter day. And of course the scotch selection seems endless. Lots of wine too. read more

I had a great time at the Bothy: from the first greeting through the last sip of whisky, it was a great experience! The whisky was a flight of Talisker, which I'd heard was all that's the best of Scotland. Each was better than the one before. Not sure if that was because that stuff is STRONG! I am not a whiskey drinker and now I know why people get it with water! The pound of PEI mussels with wine and garlic started off my nibbling, opening my eyes with it's spicing, accompanied by tasty crunchy sourdough bread. It went well with the house red wine. That lead into the steak & mushroom pie - excellent comfort food! The portion sizes were decent although I was wanting more. Perhaps that is because of the taste. It was the Scottish fare I didn't have growing up but tonight I pretended I did :-) My mom is part Scottish and I have visited my homeland...Bothy was pretty authentic if not a little more refined. I would go back. ONLY thing I would change is making sure the bathrooms are tended to regularly. They were not as tidy as I would have liked. Decided to take advantage of my in-laws bring in town, so left them babysitting while my husband and I went for a romantic meal at the Scottish restaurant in town. Being Scottish we wanted to go for ages and I'm so glad we did! I neglected to take into account the fact that it's a wine bar, I was just thinking about the haggis but when I got there the extensive wine collection and visible wine room at the back was a pleasant surprise. They have a cool back bar that keeps the wine fresh and to a set temperature for optimum drinking conditions! Gotta say, I was really impressed. For those of you who don't know what a bothy is, a sort of shelter that is found on walking trails and mountain hikes in Scotland. Usually in areas that are not too accessible, so you have a place to crash for the night and a wee dram of whisky while you are there. The place is intimate and has a wee patio that wasn't open when we were there. The server was lovely and informed us of the Sunday you can get three courses for $30. I ordered the beet salad to start. It was really fresh with a creamy dressing and sweet onions that were just delicious. the main event was obviously haggis and I had been craving it for so long. I've only had a can of haggis here and that just does not cut it. this haggis was creamy with the right amount of spice served over mash and untraditionally zucchini and peppers. I've never had it with that sort of veg before but it was very tasty. I enjoyed every single bite. The dessert was cranachan which is my absolute favourite and I usually make it at New Year or Christmas. It's a sort of trifle with cream and a ton of raspberries topped with roasted oats. The raspberries were so sweet and fresh but I thought the cream was really missing that whisky hit. That was my only fault in the whole experience, so I'd say they hit the nail on the head with quality of food, service and the drink selection. I didn't have any whisky because we shared a bottle of wine and we were so full after that amazing three course meal. I know they do whisky flight and I love that idea so I'll get that next time. My family are from Islay and I naturally know a lot about whisky itself and have been to all of the distilleries on many occasions So when I seen the Ardbeg artwork it really made me feel at home. Feels like an Irish pub, filled with Canadians drinking French bubbles and Scottish hooch. What a find! A nice cozy place to sit at the bar after a long day, have some friendly bartender banter, and drink some classy bevs into the wee hours. The bar is stocked with craft whiskey & fine wines, so you can please both the manly and dainty drinker in your life! The enomatic wine system keeps the bottles fresh for 30 days and automatically pours the perfect glass. As for bubbles, they carry the Madame Veuve, and some other less expensive stuff. What an outstanding evening at The Bothy! Both our host and server were friendly, chatty and knowledgeable about the menu. The special that evening, the short ribs, sounded amazing. I hope it come back as a special so I get a chance to try it! My wine (the Petit Petit) was fabulous. A dark, fruity, vanilla flavour to it, and a fun name to boot. Server assured me it was her favourite on the menu, and I loved it too! My arugula salad was extraordinarily tasty, and the wine went well with it. The cheese and charcuterie plate looked to-die-for. I'm also ordering that next time! (So what if I'll already be full of salad and short ribs?) I'm not a whiskey gal, but I do love the idea of having a little journal to keep track of all the whiskeys you've tried here! I started going to the Bothy when Doug first opened the place. I was excited to visit a new independent local place which was dedicated to great whisky, wine, and great local food. To date they haven't disappointed me. They have one of the best line-ups of whisky in Canada, and more than that, know what they are talking about in terms of serving it up. I love going there for lunch, and think that their sandwiches are some of the best kept secrets of Edmonton. The only thing that I will say is that this is not fast food. You need to plan on at least an hour if you want to go and eat there. But the wait is worth it, as I always leave smiling. Doug, Chris, Andrew and the rest of the crew always make you feel welcome and I would encourage anyone who hasn't yet discovered the Bothy to drop by, whether for a wee dram, or some authentic meat pies. read more

Wow! 5 stars for sure, this place is rad! I wasn't sure about a little location like this that wasn't downtown, it almost seemed as though it wouldn't fit in. After locating this place (it's a little tricky to spot) I have to say I'd drive back in a heartbeat. We were seated right away and had the friendlies server ever! Seriously, she was so amazing and helpful! She helped me pick a delicious wine, some amazing scotches for the newbies and the scotch veterans. I couldn't believe how much she knew about everything on the menu and then she blew us away one last time when she picked out some awesome cheeses! Wow! This venue is adorable, I love how homey and cozy it is - I felt like I was in a old library or something! The ambience was just romantic but sophisticated. This is definitely one of those highly coveted places you see on TV that everyone wants to get into but only the elite get in. Fun fact: I like scotch. It's one of my favourite things - right up there with steak. Now, admittedly The Bothy doesn't offer steak... but it more than makes up for that issue with one of the best scotch selections I've ever seen. If you're a scotch lover, like me, The Bothy needs to be on your "to visit" list. Be sure to get yourself a passport - it's about $15 and is a full listing of their scotch selection with spaces for you to write your thoughts on each one as you experience it. It even comes with a scotch glass to take home at the end of the night. They also offer flights of scotch - a little scotch adventure that lets you sample three or four at a time. Oh, and they have wine. But let's be honest, it's the scotch that makes this place stand out. That all said, does the incredibly deep selection of scotches alone merit five stars? No. Fortunately, The Bothy also has a decent menu meant to round out the amazing drink selection. In particular, you can build your own charcuterie and cheese plate. They also have a friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating staff. I was tempted to take off a star due to the price range being a little higher than I'm normally comfortable with... but honestly, I can't fault them the price point, and it didn't in any way detract from my experiences here. I came here with my family on a whim because both my brother and I had been meaning to try it and we were in the area. I'm glad we did because it is a classy little place with nice decor with extensive wine and whisky lists. They also have a temperature controlled wine cellar in the back. The wine was actually a bit overpriced so we opted for beer instaed, I would like to go back and try their whisky sample flight. I had the special which was lamb curry and it was wonderful; homey and satisfying. I would come back here with friends as a nice quiet place to have a couple drinks and appitisers. too bad it's really out of the way if you don't have a car. read more

I believe that I'm the Duke of this Bothy's (although the other location downtown, not this one) for a reason! I love it and I keep going back. I love the service and that the bar tenders always have great suggestions for new scotches to try. I arrived at this location on the way back from the Airport after picking up my brother. Whenever he is in town it's tradition to go so we made the stop first thing. We arrived after the kitchen was closed but they still gave him a bowl of soup and offered him complimentary hash browns or something. He loved it! We get treated so well when we're there and it doesn't seem to matter which location. With scotch drinking growing in popularity I imagine they will have a good run for many years to come! How have I not already written a review of the Bothy? I love this place! The Bothy is the best (and, until the place in the Jaffer building opens, possibly the only) whisky bar in Edmonton. The selection of scotch is unparalleled and the staff truly know their whisky. If you aren't sure what you're in the mood for, or if you are new to scotch, ask your server or the bartender for a recommendation and they'll almost always be able to find something that you'll like. The waitresses don't always know as much as the bartenders, but they will typically consult with them if they don't feel that they can give you a good suggestion. They also have a variety of whisky from around the world, including India, Australia, Ireland, Canada, the U.S.A., Japan, and Wales. (Tip: avoid the Penderyn unless you like your whisky to taste very medicinal; Welsh whisky is, apparently, not very good.) The food is also fantastic. I discovered, during my most recent visit, that the menu has been expanded from the pies and haggis that previously made up the dinner section. There are now more choices, but still few enough that the cooks are able to make sure that they can do everything well instead of mediocre. The meat pies are great. The leek pie is a fantastic vegetarian option. And the haggis is delicious. One of the newer menu items, the Alberta Trio of duck, beef, and lamb, is amazing and incredibly inexpensive compared to what most other restaurants would charge for a similar dish (I believe it was $26; most places would probably charge closer to $40). The downside about the Bothy is that it's very small. Mostly, this gives it an excellent cozy feeling, but it can make finding a table very difficult on the weekend. On the plus side, this popularity has resulted in the opening of a second location on 124 Street which I'm hoping to check out in the near future. read more

The Bothy... For such a small place, it is so so many things; A Scotch tavern, a wine bar, a chic bistro, literally the only Scottish restaurant I have ever seen, anywhere, outside of Scotland. And perhaps most important, it is like being in a good friends living room. It is comfortable and classy all at the same time. The Bothy boasts the best Scotch selection in the city, and is the only place in town to have an Enomatic wine system for absolute vino freshness. Oh, and the food menu is absolutely delectable. But perhaps the pi de resistance... the men behind the bar wear Kilts. Ahhhh, what more could you ask for! read more

Went into this place expecting a simple scotch tasting place, and was blown away by the menu selection. Their "trios" are actually outstanding value and well crafted. My friend has the seafood trio which rather cleverly combined three different fish fare with interesting complementary fruits and vegetables (e.g., ahi tuna with watermelon). I had the foothills trio, and expecting small bites of meat, was presented with a sizable plate of beef tenderloin, duck confit, and rack of lamb with excellently paired sides. Their whisky flights are well worth the cost. You can get into some of the cheaper scotch selections at around $40; giving you a good understanding of that distillery's characteristics. Way to go, Yelpers! I kept seeing review after review here for this place, and kept chatting it up to Al, hoping we'd get there someday. Last night was the night! Wanting to get off the road and out of the snow, we decided to stop in for dinner. We weren't greeted immediately upon arrival, but once we were, our waitress was very attentive, especially when she found out it was our first visit. Al was excited about all the liquor choices, and ordered a Laphroaig, one of his favorites. Not being a big Scotch drinker, I ordered a Tempranillo, one of my favorite wines. He had a Steak and Mushroom Pie, which looked really good. I ordered the mix-and-match 5-feature Cheese and Charcuterie Plate (you can pick anything from 2 to 5 of the choices). And also the Tomato and Bacon Soup. What a perfect choice! For cheese, I picked the Brie and the Chevre. For charcuterie, I chose the Lobster and Asparagus Mousse, Hungarian Salami, and Prosciutto di Parma. Along with these items were several dollops of various spreads, including a dill mustard, a cranberry relish, some sort of chutney (fig, I think?), a very strong stone ground mustard, some delicious pesto, and some sort of clear, jelly-like seasoned thing I've forgotten the name of. Some very soft, porous bread was served with. It was absolutely fabulous! The tomato soup was to die for. The tomatoes had a smoky quality to them, very flavorful and hot. They were garnished by a massive clump of thick, chunky, cubed bacon and pesto oil. It was an amazing pick for a snowy evening. DO try it. You won't be sorry. This was an amazing meal. I think hell has frozen over... a charcuterie place in Edmonton? If only these places sprouted up before I left a few years ago! The menu reminds me of Salt and Gudrun in Vancouver, but with a more casual/dark wood decor and a more of a focus on whisky than wine. That being said, this is a great place to hang out for a night. Prices are a bit overpriced in my opinion, but not out of keeping with this type of place. There's the option to do flights of wine and whisky which are a great way to sample if you don't know what you want. It was my dinner for the night, so I skipped the meat/cheese options and went straight for the regular menu. I had the black cod feature for the night - nicely cooked with fiddleheads and rice as my sides. I found the portion a bit small but it was well prepared. Service is great and there's no one rushing you when you're hanging out with friends. No kids allowed! P.S. I totally agree that it's a pain to find! It's on Calgary Trail south, and look for the giant buffet sign. That's the area you need to get to. read more
