We had a great time with friends at Bodega. It is a small intimate restaurant where the wine flows and the food comes out in waves. Our server was good. The food was excellent. It is a great place to share a bunch of items with friends. Two of my favourite things are the boar cheeks and the piri piri prawns. I also love the sardines but our friends weren't so eagar to have them. So what we ordered was a wonderful bottle of Portuguese wine, boar cheeks braised in red wine, topped with crispy onions, patatas bravas -fried potatoes, spicy aioli, piri piri prawns with piri piri aioli, robalo -European seabass fillet with olive oil, sea salt and lemon, and Spanish pork sausages with puttanesca mustard, baked Portuguese baguette and butter, and smoked duck carpaccio with truffle oil, arugula. Everything was delicous but the standout for sure was the seabass and the smoked duck carpaccio. I think that I should try a few new dishes each time I go. We visited Bodega, a cozy spot tucked into a small, family-oriented neighborhood. We went with our family and some of the staff. Although we arrived a bit late, and the baby wasn't fully at ease, we were able to step in and out comfortably since the space is so intimate. I'd say it might not be the best place for a baby due to its size, but the food was outstanding. We tried a bit of everything: bore cheek, meatballs, calamari, Brussels sprouts, bone marrow, mussels, patatas bravas, and bacon-wrapped dates--each one a standout. For dessert, we couldn't resist and ordered the whole menu--every bite was delicious. We also enjoyed a bottle of wine that paired perfectly. Despite the baby's fuss, we thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant flavors, the warm atmosphere, and the attentive service. We'll definitely be back! read more

This place is a gem and I have no idea why it's taken me so long to go. Small, classy, intimate atmosphere. Such a small dining place with large vibes. This is a tapas place, for those that don't know, they serve smaller and shareable dishes. These small dishes pack the biggest punch with every bite. They also have great specials. The servers are also great, creating the perfect dining experience and knowledge. I suggest coming here for a date night, catch up with friends. I do not suggest bringing children here. Great little spot in the Highlands, it's owned by the same company that owns Sabor, and the other bodega restaurants. The service is top-notch, there's one server there that loves to romance the wine and explain everything about all the cool organic wines that they have. It's awesome if you're in the mood for it, sometimes I prefer to just be a bit more private though... Most of the food is small plates and very interesting dishes. I love the octopus! I literally would say just try everything on this menu because they're all really unique and beautifully thought through. This spot is quaint but oh so awesome! They have great cocktails, wine selection and lovely food dishes. We had the piri shrimp which I HIGHLY recommend, then had the scallops which were pretty tasty but didn't quite compare to the shrimp (go for the shrimp, you won't be disappointed), then we had a bread & cheese dish...again highly recommend! Salt cod fritters - prepared to the right texture they weren't overly deep-fried at all; soft and flavorful on the inside and mildly crunchy on the outside Dusted piri piri calamari - flavor, crunch and sauce completely each other perfectly. Baguette with butter - Warm and toasty on the outside, soft on the inside Braised boar cheeks - had lot of flavor and the meat was so tender. empanadillias - lamb and prawn, both of which were amazing. I have wanted to go here for months, but on weekends, my schedule is usually pretty full and often I'm usually a little bit lazy to leave my neck of the woods! It wasn't busy when we strolled in so there was virtually no wait. We opted to sit inside in front of the large window because it was windy today and allergies in the springtime, not so much fun. We ordered one main to share and two items from the tapas menu. We were only given the brunch menu at first, but during brunch, you're also able to order off the tapas menu! So be sure to ask for that, if they don't give you the tapas menu as well because you wouldnt want to miss out on those! We had the grilled artichokes, beef empanadillas, and the huevos a la flamenca and none of them disappointed! Everything arrived to our table piping hot. They were all distinct and different enough to merit being ordered. We almost also ordered the patatas bravas which I'm sure would have been lovely, but there was a decent potion of potatos in the flamenca that it probably would have been overkill. I'm normally not a huge fan of pickled artichokes, but I didnt mind them! The flamenca had a little bit of heat, likely from the chorizo, but nothing over the top. I also really enjoyed the strawberry vinaigrette that came with the salad on the side. It was just the right amount of dressing, and the subtle hint Of strawberry, yum! Of the 3 things we ordered this morning, the empanadillas were giving me life... sometimes you just need that all that pastry and carbs The decor in Bodega has a cute vibe too it, and the staff were pretty friendly. The highpoint of all brunchins' that has kick started the writing bug in me. Only recently has Sabor started pushing out a brunch menu in their Highlands Location, not a typical brunch spread you'd see anywhere else. Much like the other two eateries under the Sabor brand, Bodega Highlands has a focus on a mix of Spanish and Portuguese tapas. Deep into the northside, not the most convenient location nor a very popular destination at that. The small brick building blends in perfectly among the strip of storefronts, easily missed if not trying to be seeked out. Inside is where you're welcomed into a space that instantly beams welcoming homey vibes with the smidge of elegance that clings to the romantic elegance that shines most with this rustic-chic design. I'm going to be open and honest and let you know that Sabor has already won a special place in my heart. The family style tasting course back in their downtown location blew me away and I've yet to top that experience, which brings us to what I think about this location... Completely satisfied with my recent visit to the Highlands this past weekend for Sunday Brunch. Service was friendly and quick, food looked and tasted delicious. The vibe and atmosphere was chill and relaxed, overall just like what I expected if not more. Will be keeping an eye out for an opening to venture back over here for a dinner service to get the cozy Highland experience. Empanadillas - ($6.00) - Three empanadillas with three choices of fillings.Two pockets of the veggie that had a spinach, sundried tomato and manchego cheese filling and one pocket of the beef. (opted for no lamb) Totally impressed with the delivery of the flavors from the manchego and the sun dried tomatoes. The beef one was seasoned amazingly and packed a ton of flavor without being greasy at all. But man, the pastry alone, so crispy and flakey, taking a bite and feeling the crispiness under your teeth is another level of satisfaction. Tortilla Espanola - ($15.00) - Two pieces of corn flake crusted fried chicken sat beautifully next to a hefty spanish potato omelette, paired with a mixed salad with some juicy fresh strawberries! The unique pairing of corn flakes and fried chicken was an instant push for me to claim this as mine. As it arrived onto the table I couldn't help but marvel at the color of these two pieces of fried poultry. There were two different dipping sauces that arrived following my plate, my favorite was the tangy lighter color that had a slight tangy/sweet mix. The other sauce had more of a marinara tomato flavor going on. The potato omelette was another item that was totally new for me, layered slices of potato with a mix of creamy eggs the top layer had a beautiful color on it with a mix of each bite being extremely creamy with a slight crisp. One of my fave things to do is to hang out with great company and delicious food! One of the best ways to do this is to sit, drink, and enjoy tapa dishes that slowly trickle in as you chat away and catch up on what's happening in your lives. Bodega is one of the best tapa places in the city. Any of their locations are great! I especially love their Iberico and manchego cheese is a great way to start. Their chicken liver smoked duck pâté is fabulous. Their braised boar cheeks and grilled octopus was memorable for sure! Just try it all! Just be careful during the hot summer seasons. As much as I love sitting in the sun, it can get pretty hot inside the Highlands location. So, choose a seat further in to avoid the hot sun beaming in the window during service. Overall I was impressed. It is a great edition to the area and the large windows highlight the streetscape well. The food was excellent with a menu varied enough to please almost everyone and long enough to justify coming back again and again to try something new. The braised boar cheeks were the highlight this visit. I walked away wanting more which is always nice. The interior is attractive and warm although the AC from the floor vent was really cold on the legs! The one down side was the service. I am not here to embarrass anyone so I won't mention what was said but the two severs on shift were at times condescending to customers with questions. I really felt for a few of the people on the receiving end. I understand that the restaurant has a culinary focus and some people may be new to it but it is always better to educate than demean. Aside from this I would recommend Bodega Highlands wholeheartedly. read more

Food was amazing. Vibrant in presentation, colours and flavour. Portion sizes were generous, and we had to ask for leftovers to be packed up. I have been meaning to try this place for about a year but they don't seem particularly child friendly. I didn't see any high chairs and it's quite small so tables are squished together... it's not the ideal kids setting. Not a big deal, it just meant I would to save it for a date night. And, I'm glad I did because it was such a treat! I would say it's the best tapas I've had in Canada. Delicious little ceramic plates of delight! The plates!! I love cute crockery and things but these were lovely bright colours of different shapes and sizes making your table look busy with the beautiful mini dishes. It was really sweet to be sat at the window and watch 112 life go by in the Highlands. I love that little street, it's a world away from the usual YEG main streets. We were celebrating so we ordered a glass of fizz and enjoyed that along with our meal. Anyway, FOOD! We ordered a few lovely items including the grilled baby artichokes which were my favourite hot item we shared. Those artichokes were soft and flavourful, such a lovely addition to our table. The patatas bravas wasn't that great, the sauce was too heavy and too spicy!! I like spice but that just wasn't enjoyable. Luckily everything else was exquisite, garlic prawns, grilled calimari, and we even tried the special that night, boar ribs. But the ultimate dish, without a doubt was the tomato and queijo fresco salad. So fresh and light. It was such a palate cleanser with all those busy dish we had (so much garlic - yum). Hubs and I celebrated NYE together and it was such an excellent meal! We opted for an early seating because our little one was being watched by family while we dined. $45/person got you unlimited tapas from a select menu. We tried everything exempt the cheesecake for dessert. Lemme tell ya, we got our money's worth! The highlights were the Piri Piri prawns (but of course!), the amazing seared pork belly, the Spanish style vegetables (pisto manchega), patatas bravas and the flan (Crema Catalana) at the end of the meal. Wow! But everything else we tried was top notch including the shrimp & scallop ceviche, tomato & ricotta bruschetta, lobster risotto, braised pork ribs, roasted winter veggies and bacon wrapped dates! My friend picked this restaurant, otherwise I never would have found out about this little hidden northside gem. After eating my way through a recent trip to Spain, I came with fairly low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. It's a small little restaurant, right on 112th, with plenty of street parking. (parking out front is only available after 630pm) Free tapas Mon-Thurs 430-630pm. Not sure if this works like in Spain where the more drinks you order, the more you get, but we were each only given a pincho of the day (cured beef with horseradish aioli - beef was a little on the chewier side, but the aioli was a nice touch) to go with our waters. Better than nothing, I guess. We ordered a few of the hot tapas - empanadillas (so good, obviously freshly made as the pastry was nice and crispy, and the filling was hot-hot-HOT! I had the spinach one, and it was really good. The others tried the lamb and beef; also had no complaints, looked pretty juicy), crimini mushrooms (voted the favorite dish of the table), boar cheeks (nothing special, tasted just like a meatball), grilled octopus (the octopus was cooked really well, but the olive vinaigrette was pretty overwhelming), and the calamari and prawns (big dish was not so big, more like a small entrée size, and it had a bit of a kick to it. The calamari was cooked well; not tough and chewy at all). We topped off our meals with dessert - the passionfruit cheesecake, the crema catalona, and the chocolate mousse. They all tasted good. The crema Catalona was the table favorite - so light and fluffy, and not to sweet. The chocolate mousse is quite rich, but because of its smaller portion size, it was just right. I liked how it had little bits of chocolate in it. There was only one server on, so service suffered a bit. Hopefully this was just a one time thing. I would come here again, especially since it's so close to home, and I'm a big believer in supporting northside establishments, because then this might mean we'll finally start to get more restaurants in our side of the city! read more

My God this place is amazing. I came here for dinner and was really impressed by everything. The decor is trendy and they have an amazing patio. Perfect for a sunny day and sun dresses. We tried the Piri Piri Chicken, Veg Paella and the Tuna Tartare. All of it was delicious. Simply delicious. I honestly don't have words. By far the best tapas in Edmonton. Owner and mangers came to check on us which was a nice touch. I liked seeing all the staff working together to ensure great service. Most people know and love Bodega Highlands by Sabor for their tapas and wine, but not many know that they also serve brunch. Bodega, like its parent, is a Portuguese-Spanish venture. The drink menu is mainly sparkling, white and red wine, but they will make you a mimosa or Caesar if you ask. There is also coffee of course and other brunch drink essentials, I'm not sure what kind they use but it was really nicely brewed. Brunch is divided into two sections - tapa and mains. The tapas are almost identical to the "hot tapas" off the regular menu, some of my favorites are the bacon-wrapped dates, patatas bravas and piri piri shrimp. If you are like me and don't care for the idea of tapas for lunch, the mains are more individual plates. They mains are not your classic bacon and eggs, they have some unique options. We ordered the Pisto Manchego (roasted Spanish vegetables baked with three eggs and Manchego cheese) and the Francesinha (Portuguese baked sandwich layered with Edam, sausage, ham, beef tenderloin, chorizo, fried egg & special sauce). Of the two I would recommend the Francesinha and if you have never tried the patatas bravas they are a must. The tapas range from $6-$12 each and mains are around $15. The portions are generous, and service is relatively quick and is always friendly. Brunch is served from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday, as far as I know it is only offered at the Highlands location. We went in the early afternoon and did not have to wait for a table, but I think we got lucky. The space is cozy (for lack of better word), so seating is limited. They normally fill up fairly fast and they do not take reservations. Brunch aside, regular hours are 4:30PM-10:00PM (mon-thurs), 4:30PM-11:00PM (fri-sat), and 4:30-9:00PM (sun). After meandering up 124 st and along jasper Ave we ended up in the east end due to our joint indecision and questions of "what do you feel like? Hmm what do you feel like?" Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways and brought us to the bodega in highlands. Thankfully. It's one of my new favorite places. I want to go again tomorrow so I can try other things that we didn't have. I'd also like to go in the daytime because there's nifty little shops all around that I'd love to check out and then go eat here. Lovely wine, really lovely wine reasonably priced. Have the boar cheeks! I won't say anymore about that, just try them. We also had the cheese board, the salted cod fritter and the mouth watering crimini mushrooms...but I'm a sucker for mushrooms with a poached egg on top. When our bill came we guessed before we looked at it. My guess was $50 too high!!! I couldn't believe the low tab for the awesome food and wine. It's cozy...that means little. We hadn't been out much the last few months. Unemployment sucks. But with a new job and a more relaxed mood, I chose this place for my belated birthday meal before a movie. Their hours said they opened at 3:00, and we wanted to make an early showing of a movie, so we browsed some of the wonderful new little businesses that have opened in that block of the Highlands. SUCH a fun visit this time. We arrived pretty much right on the dot, and surprised them. No one was manning the front except for the cooks enjoying a snack at the bar. They said something like "Not sure if he's ready" and had to grab the manager, who eventually let us know where to sit. We took a spot at one of the tables in the long booth along one wall. Everything looked so good it was hard to choose, but I got the bacon wrapped dates and lamb empanadillas, and husband got the lamb chops, and we split an order of the chicken, smoked duck and port pate, which comes with crostini. Plus, I ordered a red sangria, and Allan G got an Alley Kate beer type he hadn't tried before, with a grapefruit flavor, which he really liked. The food was fantastic. I make tapas at home, and it's always a special occasion when I do. But it is EXHAUSTING. I cook all day, and sometimes they don't come out as good as I would hope. But everything we ordered was delicious. Manager did ask if we wanted more crostini, which was appreciated, and did check on us, and the service was fine once they got going. I'm only subtracting one star for the slow start. If your doors open at 3:00, be ready to accept customers at 3. Get all the other stuff done first. Great for intimate dinners. Kid friendly too. We were enjoying the food so much, I forgot to take pictures of our desserts. Empanadillas - my favorite was the cheese but others liked the beef better. Cremini Mushroom - comes with poached egg. Bacon wrapped dates - the sweet and salty mix is perfect for the palate. Definitely appetizing. Paté and crostini - also excellent but because it was bread, it was filling. I guess it was not on the tapas list for a reason. Seafood Paella - I love it when seafood is cooked to perfection! The dish is on the spicier side compared to the usual paella I've had (say like Joey's used to have) but it was not overpowering. It was just enough kick to keep eating more. If you're Asian like me, it's not a lot of rice. Lots of seafood though. The dish is enough for 2 people to share. Sea Bass - Fish was cooked perfectly too! The rice was creamy rich. It tasted great but, we were glad to be sharing dishes. Torta de Santiago is a must if you are not a big fan of chocolate. If you are a chocolate lover like me, I suggest Espresso Chocolate Crema. We would of gotten more drinks, tapas and desserts but were not asked once if we were okay or wanted more. My new favourite spot! Everything was amazing; the food, service, ambiance, wine list. Empanadillas, grilled baby artichokes (!!), sauteed kale, bacon-wrapped dates, fried piri piri calamari, boar cheeks (!!), piri piri prawns (!!).. all delicious. The piri piri spice is utterly amazing. The only dish I probably wouldn't order again is the sauteed kale. I'd try the other veg dishes before. Prices are very reasonable $6-$12 per dish on average. Food is great but the service could not be worse. The hostess/manager Jessie greats everyone with a miserable face. Seats everyone side by side cause he doesn't want to take a few extra steps and on both times we dined there closed the bar 30 minutes early because it was not busy and they wanted to close early. Overall a good place that either needs new management or at least to switch out some really bad staff. At last! Finally, the perfect restaurant for this address, just what our neighbourhood needs. The food at this new Spanish tapas place is really good, and very reasonably priced indeed, which will encourage us to come back frequently. Two of us shared a variety of dishes and were completely satisfied for $59 before tip, and that included a 9 oz glass of rose. We ate: an amuse bouche of smoked salmon and microgreens on toasts with a lemony cheese spread (enjoyed even by the smoked-salmon averse of the two of us); a generous helping of eggplant spread with toasts; empanadillas (little empanadas, one each filled with lamb, beef, and spinach/tomato/manchego); grilled spicy baby artichokes ; patatas bravas with spicy aioli; grilled huge piri-piri prawns with more aioli; and grilled calamari with onions. Everything was just really really good. The prawns (the standout of the night) and calamari were so tender, the artichokes and empanadillas were adorable, and I could eat that eggplant spread for days. Everything is presented attractively but not fussily - the food is straightforwardly delicious. My only criticisms are that the water wasn't as cold as it could have been, a passing waiter was too zealous in whisking away a plate that still had quite a lot of aioli on it that I was planning to mop up (it's so good you don't want to miss a drop), and the espresso machine conked out before we could get any coffee. I'm stretching, though. The patio was the perfect place to sit on a warm summer Friday evening with a light breeze. The restaurant inside looks more open somehow than it used to - not sure what they've changed. It's a cozy fit, but not crowded. We were close enough to the people next to us that they were lusting after our prawns, but not so close that we had to hear their every word. The chairs are comfortable, the little ceramic plates are charming, and the black paper napkins looked nice. I prefer cloth when I'm likely to eat with my fingers, but these were perfectly adequate. This spot has been the kiss of death for so many other attempts, and most of the restaurant demises went unlamented, but I hope Bodega Highlands is willing to smudge the grounds, sacrifice a small goat periodically, or do whatever other arcane rituals are necessary to ensure success. They have the food and the service nailed already. We'll be back as long as they're around. Kudos! read more

What a great new restaurant. Loved the tomato salad, calamari sauté, petite artichokes and paella. Wow all good great for sharing. Great friendly service in a crazy atmosphere. This is a winner in a quiet area of town. Across from my favourite candy store. That's a win-win. !! read more

So, different tables get different service and it's a wine bar that doesn't let you taste the wines. I was graced with a table for 1 despite coming in for a wine and not food. Many places won't do this. I asked to taste the 2 featured wines but was told they don't do tastings. The waiter explained that if they open a bottle and then don't sell another glass for the rest of the night...really? You're a wine bar . He also said they don't want to handle too many bottles, because...covid, but proceeded to bring multiple bottles to choose from for customers who were ordering full bottles. So exposure doesn't seem to be an issue. When I asked about the 3rd feature wine the server didn't know anything about it. I asked if she could check the label for the varietal so she brought me the bottle to look at myself. So, why don't you offer tastings again? The male server is a bit extra. The grilled octopus was chewy bit the tapenade was delicious. The room, however, is beautiful. read more
