Welcoming, thoughtful, and dedicated coaches, team, and owner-- highly recommend…read more Looking in from the outside, the workouts can admittedly feel intimidating at first, especially for non-athletes (like me). But if you can get past the newness and unfamiliarity, the challenge is well worth it. The workouts and community have an engaging sense of camaraderie, structure, and challenge that keeps each session interesting and effective. I have found that by challenging myself in this way, my confidence to face challenges has expanded into areas outside of workouts as well. There is no pressure to join, which I appreciated, and no obligation to socialize (though opportunities are there if you want them). The studio offers a sense of community with familiar, friendly faces that makes workouts accessible and, frankly, fun. I have been going for about 6+ months and befriended kettlebells, sleds, and Ski and RowERGs-- and have seen significant improvements in strength and energy. It has been a great complement to yoga and Pilates. The variation in daily workouts (resistance training, cardio, and hybrid days), which are easy to preview on the app ahead of time, paired with upbeat music--and often a DJ on Saturdays-- makes the time go by quickly. Being able to track progress using their InBody scan has also been a key motivator. The space is bright, modern, clean, and sunlit with large windows. Most importantly, the coaches and team are attentive. They are encouraging and supportive throughout the process. I have been to other F45 locations in other states and can confidently say that the coaches at this location are truly excellent-- professional, friendly, and genuinely helpful.

I think it is a cult, and the patron saint is Mark Wahlberg.* For Pete's (that's me) sake, these are people that like doing burpees between sets. But after 15+ sessions, I guess I'm drinking the koolaid. What I love about it is it's always a full body, crushing workout in only 45 minutes. I can get in and out during the workday, feeling like I actually did something. There's no wasted time. You arrive, warm up, and go. There are screens showing you exactly what you should be doing at all times, and the coaches are roaming around with minor corrections and encouragement. There will be machine work (rowing, skiing, biking, etc.), kettlebells, weights, bodyweight exercises, weighted balls, resistance bands, jumps, agility work...all kinds of movement to challenge yourself. There will be so many different types of squats, and RDLs, and presses. The workouts are thoughtfully designed to hit your whole body. If you ever played sports, you might find that this is a much better motivator to push your body than most other workouts. You get out what you put in (like everything in life), and the other folks around you help you push yourself in a low-pressure way. And with this type of circuit training, I find that I don't have time to get bored, which makes it more fun than just about anything else I do, workout-wise. And in my experience, the coaches are awesome. The first person I met was Grace, who seems like she runs shit around here. She's also a badass who I've seen push triple the weight I can on a sled with a full grown man on top of it besides. I'm more of a morning workout guy, and while I've had a bunch of different coaches, Rashell (who's leaving sadly) and Luther are often there in the AM, and always cool. They are just good people who help with my form (which is terrible), and are obviously in amazing shape. Shout out to Sisi and Cascio and Jade and all the other awesome folks as well. I like that many of them will just jump in on a class that they aren't running to get a workout in too. To be clear, F45 is not easy (if you actually go for it), especially at first. I wanted to complain that I'm too old for this shit, but I've seen multiple men and women with grey hair lapping me in some of the circuits. Personally I find that if it's a cardio session, chances are I'll feel like I'm dying afterward. If it's weights/resistance, chances are I'll feel like I'm dying the day after. But after a couple months of going semi-regularly, I feel good, and I almost enjoy the classes. Almost. Well, I think I'm in a cult. And I like it. _________________ *My first class was during "Wahlberg Week" and his voice would get on the loudspeaker and encourage us.

I tried many other programs, and this has been the most effective at reshaping my physical and mental approach towards fitness and nutrition. About two months in and my strength and posture has improved. The group sessions at 30 minutes, small groups - so far for my sessions 2 to 4 people. For the groups, your work out is what you make of it, the trainer offers modification for mobility limits (or until you get strong enough). Generally, the workouts are moderately challenging, so if you are lazy, you will not get the most out of the 30 minutes- so don't complain, give it your all and you will feel it! And if you want more challenge, the trainer will offer a modification. This is also all women, which I prefer. Pricing is more than most, but you are paying for the quality of your workouts and not the quantity of the square feet. Scheduling is flexible, but you must be on time for your sessions or else you lose it- again it is what you make of it The space is clean, temperature cool, and they offer free beverages and snacks.

I am so lucky to have found this place. If your serious about any ANY physical/mental performance…read moregoal. Cedric is THE top. I have watched in awe as my body now: - recovers while doing other physical movements -catches its breath while running - does what my mind tells it to far beyond what I thought I could. (Have literally pushed 5 more reps, by hyper focusing on the muscle even though I couldn't feel it and relaxing all else. I watched myself amazed) Cedric Cosiac has been my physical and mental trainer here for the last six months. He has trained not only my body but my mind, to such an extent that I can accomplish vastly more physically than I ever thought possible for myself. I am writing this because I have just stepped off a high intensity dance shoot involving everything from ballet to acrobatics, parkour, martial arts, hip hop, to a few things we just invented. I was the only person on camera. We were supposed to have two days to film but we only had one and had to race against the clock as the sun was our light source. This means I get little to no breaks in between takes where I am required to dance full out in huge bursts. I was required to stay in muscle fatigue for 12 hours. But I PULLED IT OFF WITH ENERGY TO SPARE ! Why ? Cedric. The active recovery and breath training allowed me to maintain energy and recover while moving. The endurance training we do allowed my muscles to last longer and perform better. (I told him I had to do a high intensity dance piece on film months ago and he designed a routine to match exactly) His overall attention to my mental state during our training allowed me to remain completely calm and slow my heart rate, focus, and not waste energy. Everyone was in awe of what I was able to do. I genuinely wouldn't have been able to pull it off had it now been for our training I used EVERYTHING he taught me and it's just the beginning. He has shown me what I am capable of. I do not know of a greater gift than that.

Gyms have officially reopened in NY, including this DUMBO location of F45, but I'm still not…read morecomfortable working out with groups of people gasping for breath and expelling what could be virus particles into an enclosed space. I've clearly watched one too many videos about air circulation indoors but there is another way! Enter outdoor training with F45, which includes workout equipment, heart thumping tunes blaring from some speakers, and even a makeshift countdown ticker in the form of an iPad. They've done away with the bells and whistles they're known for by necessity, but what I really came for was the motivation, and motivate me they did. I've been in touch with Kim at this location, who got me set up for a weeknight class. They also post their class schedule on Mindbody but I'm glad I got to talk with Kim to set the right expectations for class. All I needed to bring was a mat and a towel and show up to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Once we arrived to the park we were walked over to the gym about a block away and chose 1 kettlebell, 1 barbell, and a couple of resistance bands. Once we were set up at our spaced out spots, we began our 45 minute workout. To prevent us from having to move around and pass each other we stayed put at our respective spots, but the benefit of this is that we were able to work out unmasked. I realized pretty early on that the weight I chose for the kettlebell was too heavy for some of the moves and the barbell I picked was much too light for most of the moves, and of course I couldn't just reach for a different weight without missing a chunk of class. Fortunately Heather the instructor was a pro and provided adjustments, like using the resistance band on the barbell to make that move more challenging, or turning a one legged move into a two legged one so I had more center of gravity to carry my kettlebell that was otherwise too heavy. Of course outdoor workouts are weather dependent and there are a number of limitations, including the type of workout they can replicate outdoors and working out on the uneven surface of the earth. For these reasons I can't see making this a regular part of my routine, but I think they did a wonderful job with what they had.
