I ended up utilizing the outdoor spin classes at this location frequently, and cannot say enough good things about Chuck, the fitness instructor. As far as I know, there are a few other outdoor classes, but the spin classes are my jam. I love Chuck's energy, the music, and the fact that I get a super hard ride in once a week. I believe he teaches three classes per week, but the Sunday class is my favorite. So grateful that the YMCA has provided us with a safe way to get our fitness on. Thank you!

By far my favorite YMCA in Durham. While the American Tobacco Campus lacks a swimming pool, steam…read moreroom and sauna, it makes up for it in the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, cleanliness of the lockers and equipment and it's the least crowded Y I've been to in the area. I most often visit the gym between 9:30-12:00pm, and there is never more then a handful of clients during those hours at this Y. Mostly professionals that work at Tobacco Campus, people are quiet and stick to themselves. Also, note that this location is also only open on weekdays, conducive to professionals! I've never had a Y attendant be more attentive to me, one of the staff asked me if I was doing okay during my workout routine and offered helpful suggestions. Their quality of equipment is on par with the Lakewood facilities but is more updated with the NikeFit application on the treadmills and built in fans (you also have a beautiful waterfall view!). They also have a private bike room (not a glass room like the downtown Y) and a couple private workout classrooms for classes. My only qualms about this Y are that parking can be rough to find and there's a two hour limit on the street and in the deck. In addition, the water pressure in the woman's bathroom is like a deep-tissue massage. It's not bad, but startled me at first and I could see people having an issue with that. Since this location is only open during weekdays and not late, it's definitely more geared towards the local work crowd. Last, the lockers in the woman's room are much smaller then your typical YMCA lockers, so bring a small gym back or just try to shove it all in. I switch off my YMCA's since I work, live and socialize near three different locations, but I was very happy to discover this mostly hidden branch. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere and a place where there will always be open equipment. Also, they've got coffee for you on your way out, how much better can it get?! Elite Note: If you feel like running outdoors, the ATT starts on the other side of the highway and goes for 22 miles!

Gym's ok but don't trust them blindly with your credit card!…read more Every gym makes it hard to cancel your membership. But these guys go the extra mile to trick you. A year ago we signed up for a 9 months membership. We were planning to move out of Durham after grad school and specifically told them that we won't renew after the term ends. A few weeks before the end of our term we came to a reception and asked to cancel our membership. A person at the reception looked into our records and told us that our membership will be cancelled automatically and we don't have to do anything. We thought it's been taken care of but a couple months after we moved out we discovered that this gym still charges us monthly. Apparently to cancel a membership you're supposed to send an email with a request. We did that and they cancelled the membership but they haven't returned us $120 - what they've collected since we asked them to cancel it the first time. I've been calling them for weeks and they eventually returned half. I lost hope to return the other half. Like I said this gym may be ok for you. But keep in mind these guys are acting in bad faith: read the contract carefully, don't trust what they say, be prepared for unexpected charges.

Whether you're into heavy lifting, functional training, or cardio, they have everything you need. The staff is friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful -- you can tell they actually care about members and creating a great gym culture. The atmosphere is motivating without being intimidating, which makes it perfect for both beginners and serious lifters. Locker room was clean and the layout was spacious. To all my fellow Iron Addicts... If you're serious about your fitness and want a gym that delivers on quality, O2 Fitness is absolutely worth it. Highly recommend!

I don't expect everyone to be overly friendly, but I do expect basic professionalism and respect, especially from staff or trainers working around members. The gym itself may be fine, and other people there may be great, but this interaction left a bad impression. I would be hesitant to recommend the gym unless management does a better job making sure trainers treat members with respect.

I never thought of myself as an athlete, and now I'm doing skills I'd never dreamed I'd be able to pull off. It's a very welcoming and supportive environment for people of all ages and abilities. As a petite woman, I've felt uncomfortable in gyms in the past, but never at North Durham Fitness. The owner, Fernando, is very happy to work with you to achieve whatever goals you have in mind and offers a variety of classes at different times throughout the day. CFD is an amazing gym with brilliant coaches and programming…read more Everyone is very friendly and welcoming from the minute you join. I have been going here since October 2022 and I already feel an overwhelming sense of community. The programming here is somewhat like a crossfit gym but I find it even better! I have been doing crossfit for 3 years now and I honestly think CFD's programming has pushed me further than those 3 years did. They focus on a lot of strength with good form instead of "just go as heavy as you can" like in CF gyms. I also feel like the workouts are NOT a competition like at crossfit gyms. Most programming is not "for time", it is just about moving well for a preset time or amount of sets. The demographic at this gym ranges from young to older as well as beginners to experts in fitness. CFD welcomes all walks of life! The coaches help you adjust all exercises to meet your level of fitness. Something special about this gym is that they really take the time to get to know you and your movement style. When you start here they complete a fitness assessment which basically looks at your mobility and balance in strength between your left/right and upper/lower body. It is a very helpful tool to help identify strengths and deficits for each individual. I highly recommend joining this gym. It's in a great location and the staff are incomparable. There is nothing negative to say about Courage Fitness!

Courage Fitness was my first experience with CrossFit and like many people I was a bit nervous…read more about it, having heard about how intense the CrossFit community can be. Let me assure you that Courage Fitness is an extremely welcoming and supportive place to be, no matter whether you're just starting your fitness journey or are in fighting shape already. The coaches do a marvelous job of accommodating different levels of fitness and modifications for any injuries. I'm not sure how they're running things during Covid (I moved in July and had to end my membership) but previously they had two major categories of classes, the "Hustle" class which is a good starting point and is an intense "boot camp" style class, all body weights/dumbells/kettle bells. There's also the classic "CrossFit" style class scheme, with weightlifting and all that. If you've never done any weightlifting, don't worry, they'll set you up with a personal trainer (included in the starting package) who will coach you on basic form for all the requisite exercises and the coaches do a great job of helping coach you on your form during workouts. It's also a fantastic community. My first few workouts I had a hard time at points because the trainers had me laughing so hard. Yes, it a touch on the expensive side relative to a basic gym membership, but you're getting a planned set of workouts and a high level of personal attention.

This review is solely about the Fitness Center, especially in comparison to the I. R. Holmes, Sr…read moreRecreation Center. This Fitness Center has a good number of cardio equipment. It has several treadmills, an elliptical machine, a couple of bikes, and one StairMaster StepMill (the kind that is like an escalator with revolving stairs). When we went, this Center was not occupied and it doesn't look to be heavily used. If you want to focus mostly on cardio, this is a good Center for it. There are some dumb bells and basically one multi-exercise weight machine and one squat machine. If you want a better range of weight machine equipment, better head over to the I. R. Holmes, Sr Recreation Center. The opening hours for this Fitness Center is a lot more consistent than the one at Holmes. I believe the current hours are 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday; they also have shorter opening hours for Saturday. Unlike the Fitness Center at Holmes, this center does not close in the middle of the day and then re-opens. For just cardio, this is a better Center compared to the one at Holmes. The weight machines are not really adequate, even for one person.
