The classes are a…read moregentle mix of yoga and pilates, which is good for me as a 72 year old in reasonably good shape. Colleen is very thorough in instructing and uses lots of imagery ("imagine your spine is a string of pearls") which helps foster the learning to know one's body. In the studio she is very attentive to each student and watches to assist poses. The space is warm, clean, visually appealing, and orderly. The classes I attend are restorative, I would say, where some props are used. This is not the tpe of class where more time is spent arranging than actually engaging your body.. She also instructs in how to modify a pose or movement and givers space to do that depending on your needs. What has been helpful for me personally is stretching of muscle groups, and the attention paid to moving hip and shoulder joints which are often problem areas for seniors. Yesterday's session involved legs and hips--"drawing circles on the ceiling", doing bridges, and more than I can't recall right now. We also take time to shake out muscles after movement. Within 12 hours I had some relief of pain, which says a lot about the benefits of this work.

I didn't want to go alone my first time, but also wanted to go with someone I was conformable with. My sister is a member here, and a huge Yogi (Is that what they call yoga lovers? -idk, moving on.). While visiting family in Kansas, I decided to try a class out. We did Power 1, which is an Intro to Power Yoga. The room is set at 85 degrees, and NO that is not considered 'HOT YOGA'. The studio was comfortable, I used my sisters extra Mat, we brought 'sweat towels' and water bottles. The class started on time, and was comfortably packed. I was thankful for the mirrors, because even though there was a mini demonstration of a few different poses, I didn't always remember what I was supposed to be doing when the instructor said different 'yoga' words. I did enjoy the movement of the class, each stance was thought out, and not rushed, but the pace was consistent. I appreciated, the attention to detail that was given to help those who weren't always 'nailing' the pose. On the flip side, I'm not a huge fan of people touching me, so I was a little caught off guard when the teacher came up to me, and rotated my hips to help direct me in to the correct position. Since I've never been to a Yoga class before, I was able to get a 'week free' once I signed up. Well I wasn't visiting for a week, so I only received the 1 session for free. However, that was nice, because I looked up the pricing and it is expensive! I have sense gone to the gym I am a member of and attended a Yoga class. I admit, it is not as fun without my sister. The gym I go too isn't a specialty place like this one, so the room was cold, and the teacher wasn't as interactive with the participants, and the flow wasn't as smooth. That being said, I really did like the class here. I know that when I visit my sister again, I would most likely pay to go to a class with her. The teachers/instructors were very friendly, and knowledgeable. Thank you to them for a pretty great 1st yoga experience, and my sister for taking me.

The space is beautifully calm, and spacious enough to accomodate a big group. The high, exposed ceilings means tall yogis will have no barriers, and the cork floors are very comfortable and warm to walk on barefoot (of course, the day outside wasn't a mid-November one, either.) All the accessory props you'd need were there, even a mat (free!) if you just want to give it a one-time trial. The class was taught by Patricia, who is one of the founding owners. She was very knowledgeable, offered hands-on assists to her students, paced her classes well, and was an encouraging instructor. I love how the yoga practice room sees no shod feet due to how it's arranged with the entry downstairs. However, this confused me for a brief moment when trying to enter: the entrance is actually around the back of the building near the farmer's market shelter, not at the storefront on Santa Fe Dr. Word has it that Saturdays require a bit of creativity in parking because of the market, too.

I was a little nervous to return after several years not practicing, and I expected to have to try several studios before landing on "the one" but I got lucky when I ended up at Westport Yoga for my first class in KC. I tried a few other studios in the area after that first class but I just kept coming back to WY because of the teachers and atmosphere. I've taken Vinyasa, Vin/Yin, Gentle Flow, and Yin classes and all of them are fantastic in their own unique way. I love that they have no mirrors in the yoga studio. It really allows me to focus on my own movement with less distraction or comparison to others. The classes are accessible to all levels, and focus mainly on going at your own pace/at your own comfort level. Free-to-use Lululemon yoga mats are available, as well as complimentary tea and a small library of books on yoga and other related subjects. The owner, Lisa, has truly put her heart and soul into the studio. Not to mention, the new studio in Brookside that they just moved to is beautiful and spotless. There is plenty of parking, and it is in a safe and quiet neighborhood. I would recommend WY to anyone and everyone!

Hagoyah is an unassuming store front along 75th so parking can be tough as it doesn't have its own lot. But street parking is available where you can find it. They offer a variety of yoga classes and what I love about them is they're challenging but don't have the same repetitive flows as the power yoga classes that have become so popular. I attended the hot box detox last night and would definitely recommend it if you're looking for a challenge. It's not a true bikram clas but it is warm. Drop in classes are inexpensive and I enjoy them and the instructors are helpful and knowledgeable.

I've done yoga before and actually had a membership at a yoga studio in LA in the past, but after not doing it for 2 years, I was a little apprehensive to get back into it. Luckily, the instructor today was very chill and gave a class fitting to beginners and more geared for a relaxing time than an intense strength/endurance test. She was very clear with the instructions and with only 9 attendees there, she was able monitor us and made comments/tips to help us get the best out of the class. She was very personable, nice and had lovely stories to share. It was a very personalized class as opposed to feeling like she made it the same for every class. All the mats, blocks, straps, blankets, and pillow were available to use for class. Perfect for those who don't have all the equipment! Facility was clean and the bathroom was clean. The Yelp KC Community Coordinator, Kieu, provided healthy snacks and drinks after the class. Thanks for making this event possible! It was a donation yoga class, but I like how the instructor didn't hound us on giving a tip or donation. She just made it an option if we could, which was nice. I did end up tipping and luckily she took credit cards!

As usual, the instructor was in the front of the class but she still made her way around the room. If one of us was doing a position incorrectly or needed a little guidance, she was gentle in handling and helping us. I didn't feel silly if I fell over or had her come help me. They had mats, blocks, straps and blankets available. Which, thank goodness, because I don't own any of these! After the class, our coordinator had snacks and drinks set up for after the class. I'm very glad the class wasn't canceled due to the scary weather and I will for sure be looking into taking up some classes here!
