A friend of mine referred me to Dr. Tatz eight months ago when I was two-months post-op, in excruciating pain, and terrified. I was recovering from spinal surgery to correct a deformity in my lumbar spine that, it seemed, was the main contributor to chronic and crippling hip & leg pain. Although my surgery was successful, flawless, and healing beautifully, the pain in my hip and leg was worse than ever.  During my first visit with Dr. Tatz, I could barely speak as I was in so much pain and so terrified that I would forever be in so much pain. (Fortunately, that worked out well as he doesn't need many words to practice his gift.) He would ask me the occasional question, requiring no more than a four-word response. One of those questions was: "how long did you do Pilates?" That's when I knew this man was in a category of his own - I had not mentioned in conversation or anywhere on my intake form that I had been a Pilates teacher for 20 years (though haven't practiced consistently for more than 10 years), and yet, he could see/hear/feel it in my musculature - without any words from me.  My healing has been slow, the "three steps forward, two steps back" kind of slow, but I am finally feeling like I am really truly healing thanks to consistently working with Dr. Tatz. I'm reminded in our work together how complex the body is, how everything in the body is interconnected, and that there are no absolute "rules" about pain or healing. I purchased 3 visits through Social Living. The first time I've had an appointment with Dr. Shmuel Tatz, when I came at the designated time to discover that he left home not feeling well half an hour earlier, but nobody bothered to notify me. I have been suggested to receive a treatment from Dr. Tatz colleague, which I agreed to as my back pain was killing me and it wasn't clear when can I have another appointment. I agreed to it and asked Dr. Tatz to call me the next day. 15 minutes of that treatment I was getting heat, something that I could have done at home and I didn't feel like its worth paying for. The second time, I have sent my husband with a neck pain. He was treated by Dr. Tatz, who told him that all those people doing yoga is the source of half of the problems that he sees with patients, but he didn't specify what exactly my husband should stop or start doing. He didn't explain what exactly he is doing to him, nor did he say what should happen next. The 3rd time I came for the appointment, previously verifying that Dr. Tatz is indeed there and that I get an appointment with him and not with his colleague. When I got to the spot, I was told again that he left half an hour before I came as he wasn't feeling well. Again I asked to call me back, which he never did. I think that maybe Dr. Tatz was a thing a while ago, but it seems that the good reputation went to his head. I would really avoid coming to him again. read more

In the summer of 2003 I developed a terrible pain that began in my mid-back and eventually over the course of several weeks settled in my neck. I have always been active and healthy so it was a real shock to me that this situation had occurred in my body seemingly out of nowhere and would not go away. After a few visits to the chiropractor, my acupuncturist and a physical therapist the pain and numbness went away after about a month but this was to be the beginning of a long-term problem. Over the next 7 years my back and neck pain became more and more constant until in the fall of 2009 I was desperate enough to have a spinal surgery. I had always sworn I would NEVER have back surgery after seeing my mother suffer through many failed back surgeries in the 1980s. I was simply desperate to be out of pain and was losing feeling and strength in my arms and hands. I had been to 4 chiropractors, 5 acupuncturists, 2 physical therapists, several pain management doctors and consulted with 3 surgeons. When I finally had the surgery in Oct 2009, it did relieve the numbness in my arms but I still had considerable pain in my neck and shoulders. When my surgeon told me I could start a physical therapy program I barely had any hope left. I felt relief after my first session and have continued to experience healing ever since. I often wonder if I had found Dr. Tatz before having surgery, if I would have even needed to have it. Dr Shmuel Tatz is an excellent Physical Therapist. He definitely helped my shoulder. I would think that since he has a high end service refusing Medicare and Blue Cross, the minimum is that he should not infect me with bugs from other clients. Annoying and time consuming. Dr. Tatz is an excellent doctor and a miracle worker! The first visit he was able to tell me what was bothering me before I even had a chance to tell him. He is a very smart, nice, and funny guy. All the the staff is very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I started feeling. Agree after 3 visits. I have a long way to go in my progress but I feel a lot better already. I found a groupon for this place and the idea of "body tuning" like a musical instrument sounded alluring to me. I checked Dr. Tatz's website and hearing the story of a dancer who was healed completely after an injury sounded amazing. Although I'm not a dancer but that kind of healing sounded intriguing. So I bought the groupon for two sessions. I booked one immediately. Its in a nice building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Nice interior, kept up and clean. Interestingly music was blasting out of the wall mount speakers everywhere. It was unusually loud but at least it was opera which is my favorite. The receptionist said that Dr. Tatz likes to concentrate on his work while listening to the music. My appointment was at 11:30 am. Dr. Tatz came a little after 11:35 and I went to the room with him. Since it was my first time I thought there will be a discussion/consultation regarding my condition but he immediately asked me to lay on his table. he is an older gentleman with very heavy accent which was a little challenging for me to understand sometimes. He is eccentric but nice and pleasant. He spent about 10 minutes in the room with me, asking questions and working on my body and making some recommendations. Then his assistant-in-training came and she spend another 10 minutes with me by herself. She was very nice and courteous as well. the body work was similar to regular massage except I was fully cloths. Then Dr. Tatz came back to the room, put an electrical pulsating device (the likes of what chiropractor use) on my lower back as it has been a problem area for me and left the room. After 10 minutes its started to get hot on my skin and a shooting pain went down my leg. It was very uncomfortable, I was alone in the room and the music was blasting! I didn't know exactly what's on my back as I was face down on the bed and could not see. I did't want to just rip it off so I started to call for Dr. Tatz. The music was so loud they could not hear me. It took couple of minutes and me screaming "Doctor", "hello", "anybody"... for him to come to the room and take the device off my back. All he said was that you have another appointment right? You are done for today!!! At this point I was in a state of panic. I came out and just told the receptionist that this was not ok to leave me in the room like that and the whole thing was only 35 minutes. She was very sweet, apologized and promised that this will be addressed. Later that day when i got home I had a voice mail stating that since your appointment was so short, Dr. Tatz will add "5 minutes" to your next appointment, that's it and nothing else was addressed. I found the whole experience extremely uncomfortable, unsafe and scary. The extreme lack of care was disgusting to me. He is running a therapy mill! He spent only 10 minutes with me during which constantly check the next room where her assistant in-training was working on someone else and then he disappeared completely after that! This was a very comprehensive and super honest description of my experience, use your own judgment! read more

I had to come to NYC for a month for work. My body was totally out of whack on the right side. Severe shoulder, neck and jaw pain on the right side. My mother told me about Shmuel Tatz. I decided to try it. Thank God I did. He really put me back together. The whole experience is a little odd since he is a 70 year old man with a heavy Lithuanian accent with all these machines and gadgets with lasers and magnets etc. But whatever it was it really helps. I thought I had found a quality practitioner and was eager to start treatment. Stepped into the office, small intake form, then off to his workspace. He did some minor spinal subluxation, shook my limbs around, then hooked me up to this machine that gyrated my legs left to right. -- The fact that he worked with musicians, dancers, and former "olympic teams", I was expecting a miracle worker. I came to see Mr. Tatz with neck and back pain. During our first session he did not ask for a case history nor did he have a conversation regarding my problem. He just automatically began working and if I asked any questions he told me to be quiet. He spends 15 min with you and then uses a machine for the rest of the time. He is extremely unprofessional and rude. He does not answer any questions and literally screams at you if you ask anything. Also he sees three people on one time. He is very pricy. Dr. Schmuel Tatz is an incredibly talented physical therapist. He possesses a gift for finding the root of your pain and treating it at the source, and also for helping you gain a sense of awareness of your own body to prevent further problems. I am sharing my stories here in hopes of more people discovering the joy of living pain free through the work of Dr. Tatz. I first went to see Dr. Tatz in 2012 after a recommendation from a ballet teacher of mine. I was in a great deal of knee pain from a patellar tracking problem. After a few sessions and the simple home exercises Dr. Tatz recommended for me, my knee started feeling much better. One session, after he worked on my knee for a bit, he asked how it was feeling, and I replied it was doing much better. He then said, "Okay, now let's work on your back." I was surprised to hear this, so he began to explain that he could tell that my spine was a bit out of alignment, and that we should do some preventative work so that I would not have problems later on. We did a few more sessions working on my back and knee, and I left with a sense of relief that my knee pain was finally diminishing. 3 years later, I had long since forgotten about Dr. Tatz's recommendation for my back exercises, and low and behold, I injured my low back lifting a heavy object. I sought advice from a sports medicine doctor, who said he thought it might be a disc problem, and recommended 6-8 weeks of physical therapy at a neighboring facility. I followed suit, and the therapists gave me a series of exercises designed to strengthen my core, as they believed that weak lower abdominal muscles were the root of my problem. This surprised me, as I am a very physically fit individual, but I followed suit nonetheless. Over the next 8 weeks, I began to feel stronger in my core, but my lower back pain was not ceasing. It would seem to get better one day, but then be worse again the next. I began to feel very depressed, as it seemed my low back pain was becoming a chronic problem. It had been 3 months since my injury, and I began to lose hope that I would ever return to my normal activities without a great deal of pain. It was then that I remembered Dr. Tatz, and I quickly made an appointment. Upon entering for my first session in 3 years with Dr. Tatz, as I was taking off my coat and before I uttered a word, he said, "Ah, you are here to work on your back." With a look of amazement upon my face, I replied yes, and I told him about the first round of physical therapy I had finished two weeks before. He was not surprised that the other physical therapy treatment was not working. He said the problem was not that my muscles were not strong enough, it was that my spine was not in the proper alignment, and thus the muscles were always working hard to try to correct this, thus causing my constant pain and muscle spasms. I should note that I had also seen an orthopedic surgeon the same week and finally had x-rays taken of the area. The x-rays completely confirmed Dr. Tatz's theory: they showed no problems with my discs as the first sports medicine doctor had thought, but rather a "straightening of the lower lordosis", which means that the lower curvature of my spine was slightly flattened out, exactly as Dr. Tatz had described before I ever had the x-rays done. I've been to Dr. Tatz for 7 visits this year, and I'm thrilled to say my back pain has completely disappeared. My posture has also greatly improved, which was a problem I wasn't even aware of until I went to Dr. Tatz. Even after all that however, this is the most amazing thing I have experienced with Dr. Tatz: I was in a session last week, and he asked if I had any pain here, and was pointing to an area between my ribcage, around where my stomach is. I replied no, that I didn't think so. I did not have any pain there at the time. He asked are you sure, you have some vertebrae here that are not happy. I then thought about it for a few minutes, and it dawned on me that I had been in the hospital just five weeks earlier with incredible abdominal pain. After a day in the ER and numerous tests, the doctors could not figure out what was wrong with me, and sent me home with some pain medication. The pain went away and did not return, and I did not think about again it until Dr. Tatz asked. I relayed this story to him, and he laughed with a knowing smile, and said, "Ah yes, the mind forgets, but the body does not forget!!" This last story is further confirmation that Dr. Tatz is a true master of his field. Just by simply touching an area on my back, and without any fancy tests or imaging, he could tell that I had had incredible stomach pain in my recent past. I greatly encourage anyone with pain anywhere in their body to see Dr. Tatz for an appointment, and give him my highest recommendation. read more

I have been coming to see Dr. Shmuel Tatz for almost a month now, and while indeed Dr. Tatz is a man of few words, I am not going to him for verbal communication. He is absolutely, hands down, the best body worker I have ever come across. I first came in because of extreme pain and tightness in between my shoulder blades and stiffness in the right side of my neck. I used very few words myself (I just said the problem was in that region) and Dr. Tatz went right to work. He went directly to a very painful spot on my spine (without even feeling his way there), and started manipulating it back into proper alignment. There was mild pain, but after a few min of him working on that area (and a few other points below), I got up and couldn't even feel the right side of my body - it was totally loose. The only issue I had was that working on my right side took the whole session, so I left feeling a bit unbalanced (because my left side felt very stiff in comparison), and had to wait till my next session 2 days later to even myself out! There have been a few occasions where I've come in and Dr. Tatz has spent less time with me than at other times, but I've learned to go more by the results than the amount of time spent. If he can help me in 15 min, than I'm just as happy as if he had done it in 45. So to sum up, yes Dr. Tatz is a very particular personality, but like most geniuses I've seen/read/heard about, he's very focused on what he does and doesn't interact with much else -- but that is just fine for the aches and pains in my body. To those who have already been to other therapists and seen slow, or little progress I would definitely recommend giving Dr. Tatz a try. Like I said, he is able to hon in directly on the problem area and address it properly immediately. read more

I took my grandfather Bernando Lapallo to see Rob Jokel to see about some annoying back pain he had after a fall about a year ago. He had complained that is was painful when laying down. Rob performed some very gentle crania sacral work and voila no more pain. Apparently there were a couple of vertebrae turned the wrong way and he gently with the emphasis on gently helped realign them. Bernando said that he felt no more discomfort at the end of the 90 minute session. To perform this work on a man who is over one hundred years old is quite something. I have been a patient of Shmuel Tatz for four months. I started Body Tuning therapy because of sudden extreme neck, shoulder and arm pain due to a herniation/narrowing in my cervical spine. I immediately felt like I was in good hands. At the height of my pain, he was gentle yet worked deeply and methodically which provided relief. When the pain dissipated he was able to work on an even deeper level and this is when the shifts in my body became more pronounced. From the beginning, he told me that he does not perform magic and that long lasting healing would only happen if I commit to therapy on a long-term basis. Seeing him just two or three times would not be enough. This made sense and I appreciated his candor. It was the push I needed to finally work through unhealthy habits and patterns and open/release parts of my body that have held tension for decades. First I would like to say that Mr. Tatz does indeed have "healing" hands. For me that means 1) when he listens to the body he know where to work and 2) there is a force coming through his hands. However, Mr. Tatz is self-admittedly, a poor communicator, and this shortcoming ultimately made it impossible for me to continue working with him. Before I give any details, I will say that I asked him only a few, pointed questions; I am a medical health care provider myself, a former licensed massage therapist, and I taught yoga for over twenty years, so my connection to my body is refined. Yet his answers to my questions were given reluctantly, or in condescending tones. In the second session, the assistant doing the ultrasound began to "go at my back"--he began to massage my back, hard, when I had never been introduced to him, did not know his role in the office, and I was paying $250 to see Mr. Tatz. I had to tell this other person to stop, and yet Shmuel never asked me why. During my third session, Mr. Tatz worked on me for a shorter period of time than he advertises on his web site. I was surprised and mentioned it, because by the end of the session my pain had not been addressed. He began to become passionate about how he was no miracle worker, and what was I expecting if I could not come twice a week. He said if I only came once every two weeks and he couldn't help me I might tell the world he didn't help me (he clearly did not want his reputation impacted); he went so far as to say he "didn't need my $200"--the session was actually $250, and that if he couldn't help me, it would cause him pain in his heart and he didn't need this at his age. I asked him if he was saying he was refusing to work on me if I could not come 2x a week, and he threw up his hands, impatient and frustrated, indicating I should do whatever I wanted. I must say I found his comments distressing and unprofessional, I'm sorry he was such a poor communicator, because he has excellent hands and when he is focused his work is very good. read more

I have undergone two courses of therapy with Dr. Tatz, once several years ago when I experienced severe muscle spasms in my lower back, and again more recently when I actually herniated several lumbar discs. In both cases, Dr. Tatz and his incredible staff have helped me not only alleviate some incredible pain, but have helped me deal directly with the root causes of the problems, and restored a feeling of normalcy I would have never thought possible at the outset. With my most recent bout with herniated discs, I first underwent a full course of therapy with a large PT firm with "outlets" all over New York City. While the therapists were always personally nice and caring, they were young and inexperienced, and the clear attitude from the management was always very corporate (when I mentioned that I had some pain in my shoulders as well as in my lower back, I was informed that this represented a separate "prescription" and they couldn't treat me for it), and I couldn't escape the feeling of being a case in a big insurance system. At the end of 33 sessions, I felt basically the same as when I started - sciatica, pain/spasms in my hips, frustrated in general. With Dr. Tatz the experience couldn't have been more different. Even though I had exhausted the number of PT sessions allowed by my insurance, he encouraged me to come in, and ensured me we'd find a way to work it financially. After a few more months of patient work, he and his excellent staff have helped me feel as close to "normal" as I have in almost a year. Dr. Tatz treats the whole body, and helps you realize how interconnected everything is - how can your lower back ever truly be well if you have pain and tension in your shoulders and neck? He (and his staff) understands, with the kind of knowledge only born of years of experience and study, the human body and how to care for it. Anyone who has been to a doctor's office in New York City knows the terrible, impersonal sense of feeling like nothing more than a number to be pushed through as quickly as possible. I found Shmuel through a client of my reflexologist in Seattle who has seen him for years. I was in NY on vacation and woke up my second morning unable to put any weight on my right foot. I was able to see Shmuel that same day and continued to see him a total of 9 times during my 13 day stay. Shmuel is truly a body whisperer, though I believe that he prefers the term "body tuner". I have had all kinds of body work for many decades, and Shmuel does his own thing. He is skilled AND intuitive. His hands know where to go to deal with pain. He is idiosyncratic in the best possible way. He does indeed have techniques, methods and machines that I had never experienced before. I had high hopes and great faith in the beginning. I would feel better only to relapse shortly thereafter. This became a cycle. After 18 sessions, frustrated that I wasn't making any substantial progress, I decided to get an MRI done against Dr. Tatz's advice. The findings showed that his treatment protocol, as I suspected, wasn't addressing the real issues. When I presented him with the MRI results and asked him if he had specific treatments for the diagnoses, all he did was defend his approach, insisted that I had been getting better and suggested that I stop coming. As a physician, I found his arrogance, disregard for scientific evidence, and lack of interest in what truly matters, i.e., healing the patient, disturbing and shocking. Dr. Tazt is the most wonderful healer. As a physician myself, I have had the opportunity of knowing about many physical therapists in NY- both from the results of hundreds of my patients, as well as having visited several therapists myself after my own knee surgery in early 2010. Being a physically active person, it was extremely frustrating to not be able to go back adequately to my activities even 8-9 months after an uncomplicated laparascopic knee meniscus surgery. Within two weeks after treatment with Dr. Tazt, my knee mobility as well as overall strength and function of the involved leg improved tremendously, and I am now joyously back to my physical activities at about 90% ( it was at about 60% at the 9 month post-op mark prior to treatment with Dr. Tazt) - and have faith that this will continue to improve. Happy to report Shmuel Tatz is a miracle worker. After having seen countless doctors, had multiple Xrays, MRI's and been poked and proded with no positive results I was lucky enough to be referred to Shmeul. He changed everything. I have ridden horses my entire life so was devastated that since January I have not been able to ride due to severe pain, in my back and even worse in my hip. Shmuel Tatz is simply the best- a virtuoso in the world of physical therapy. He is an expert at so many modalities of healing it boggles the mind. Not only does he make short work of all physical problems, but the ambience at his office is extremely relaxing, from perfect volume of wonderful music to a staff you want to adopt and take home with you. Dr. Shmuel Tatz is, without a doubt, the best this business has to offer. We, in the performing arts, should be thankful to have someone who is so 'in tune' with the human body. In a very taxing musical profession, injuries are easy to come by but difficult to get rid of, and as someone that was dealing with back, neck and arm problems (along with denial...) over the last year it was a real blessing to meet and work with Dr. Tatz. He knows precisely where your problems are and where they stem from, and is able to help your body heal along with teaching you little exercises to help prevent any further injuries. Before I found Dr. Tatz, I had broken the ring finger in the joint inside of my left hand (in a stupid, unlucky fall), and wondered if I'd ever play my instrument the same way again. 8 weeks after the break, I still couldn't make a fist, and I was concerned that all of the hours in my life that I've put into practice with a metronome would be gone. Now, after a healthy number of sessions with Dr. Tatz, I can say without doubt that I will play at a professional level again. I've had physical therapy before for other injuries, but have experienced nothing like this incredible level of applied knowledge and efficient treatment. I simply didn't know that individualized, fully hands-on physical therapy like this was possible, until I began this process. The technical skill displayed by Dr. Tatz in physically manipulating and guiding my recovering hand back into proper, healthy form has been incredible to witness. The difference in dexterity, range of motion and comfort between when I arrived in the office a few weeks ago, and now as I am playing again is extraordinary. I'd say that his therapy approaches the miraculous, but that wouldn't do justice to the real-world expertise involved in getting my hand's complex, atrophied, damaged tissues to cooperate with each other again. Dr. Shmuel Tatz is an extraordinary physical therapist. I came to him with multiple back, hip, sciatica, and other problems, which significantly restricted my movement and made it very difficult to walk and sit. Prior to finding Dr. Tatz, I did physical therapy elsewhere but without much improvement. After only 10 sessions (and I still have more sessions to go) I am remarkably better. I can already take short walks and even go on a subway. Although I still have some pain, its severity has greatly decreased. Furthermore, through Dr. Tatz's work and the exercises he taught me, my body has become much more flexible.
