I had excruciating pain in my left shoulder and the left side of my neck (8 out of 10). My only relief was to lie down. I could not type or carry a bag. The practitioner told me that the first session would decrease it slightly, but that it would flair up the next day, that the second treatment would decrease it by 95% and the third, completely. So many positives about this place I can't list them all. Came here for four weeks of acupuncture and I can say after having knee surgery in May and doing my physical therapy and strength training - the addition of this eastern method was the icing on the cake that got me back to running and training for my marathon by August. I like the hours of operation being accommodating for a 9-5 person like me. The courtesy and service of all the staff were absolutely warm and friendly. After moving furniture and all of my possessions from a house in Los Angeles to a new apartment in NYC, my lower back and upper buttox had become so filled with shooting pain from sciatic nerve damage that it occupied my every thought. I could barely walk a block without needing to stop to take a minute to get over the pain. Sitting, standing and especially getting out of bed became excruciating. I tried two massage places without success prior to finally calling The Soho Acupuncture Center. Finally, I called and Diem slotted me in (Thank the Lord!). Diem began with a sit down interview about where the pain was and how it began, etc and he came up with a plan. He did some acupuncture on the opposite side of the body that the pain was in and I immediately felt relief. Dr. Diem Truong was recommended to me by my older sister who saw him for back pain (which went away after one visit with him). 3 days after having a c-section, I was later diagnosed with Bell's Palsy and went to see Dr. Truong right away. Before starting any treatment, he would ask questions about your symptoms and explain what treatment he would be using and how it would work. It only took me two visits with Dr. Truong for my Bell's Palsy to recover right away! After the first treatment I was already seeing results and after the second treatment I felt like I've recovered about 80%. My third visit with him was for my back pain. Diem changed my life! I had my first session today with Diem for various gastrointestinal and anxiety issues I have been having for years. If I could write-in five extra stars for SHL, I would. In addition to being courteous, professional, and empathetic with regard to my needs when I first arrived, Diem's acupuncture and the family's herbal preparations literally saved me from significant scarring, possibly worse. A scorching case of shingles first brought me to SHL. They were a horrific combination of searing pain, crippling fatigue and strange, neuralgic tingling that crawled up and down my left side. I had read that acupuncture was an effective way to address pain and immunity issues, and after reading SHL's positive reviews here I figured it was worth trying. Believe what you hear--Diem's soothing acupuncture session took the sting out of my body for a full 2-3 days after being poked. The SHL clinic space, despite major traffic outside, was light, airy, and relaxing, and I left that first visit feeling less like a sick person and more like a person. But I still didn't know much about Traditional Chinese Medicine, and figured the extent of it's value would be helping with pain and depressed-from-feeling-sick mood only. I was so wrong. During a follow-up session with Diem, I mentioned feeling sicker than usual, as the shingles rash was spreading--despite 4 weeks on Western drugs to treat the virus. Diem immediately asked to see the rash, noted the lesions, and asked (really nicely) why I hadn't outright said on day one that I needed treatment FOR shingles. (I didn't know that TCM could help defeat the virus itself.) Once Diem has examined the real problem, he immediately instructed his family behind the counter to begin making herbs to treat my symptoms--there were pieces of parchment filled with medicinal bark, leaves, roots, mushrooms, and the like, which were boiled down into a liquid form I could heat and drink twice a day at home. Yes, they taste gnarly, but what medicine isn't gnarly? These are meds, not oolong tea. While the herbs were being prepared, Diem carefully surrounded the rash with needles which I could barely feel, despite the VERY delicate location they were placed. He rounded out the treatment of the rash with acupuncture for mood and overall immunity. It worked. After 3 acupuncture sessions and 7 days of drinking herbs, the shingles dried up, de-swelled, and peeled off to reveal healthy, not-scarred, barely discolored skin--on an area that ran from the bottom of my ribs and down over my left hip. The doctor treating me with Western meds had said I would likely scar, considering the severity of the case. After just one week of herbs and needles and I already looked close to normal. I literally was 10% better every day. Truth, people, all truth. Diem changed my life. I was extremely sick when I came to him. I'd been having the worse migraine, it had lasted for three months continuously and it was beyond painful. I had gone to numerous physicians who couldn't figure out why it was so bad and kept giving me drugs. I was given so much medication you couldn't imagine and the more drugs they gave me the worse I got. I went here to get some herbs for my fibroids. Diem was nice and very knowledgeable. I compared what he said to what my acupuncturist said, and it seemed to match up. The best part about that, is Diem's herbs were about $200 cheaper. Money talks! After I filled out some brief paperwork, he interviewed me for clarity about what I was seeking to cure. He made some recommendations about a diet for fibroids. I paid for my herbs that were to be picked up the next day. He takes credit cards. The herbs are an acquired taste. There were even a few extra packs of herbs in my bag when I retrieved them. I took them twice a day for 3 weeks. Of course, I am supposed to continue to take them until I am fibroid free, but I haven't been able to be consistent. They taste better warm and the herbs give you an overall felling of wellness. I love going to see Diem! He is very kind and always has good advice. I suffer from Skeeter Syndrome (I know the name is terrible) where I am severely allergic to Mosquito bites. Usually what happens is the smallest bite turns into a 5 inch diameter welt, starts to heat up, and eventually starts to blister and feels like someone is stabbing me in the leg. I've tried creams, antihistamines , vinegar, baking soda paste, but nothing seems to work as well as Diem's herbs do. After 2 days of drinking his herbs the swelling is gone and the bite is on its way to recovery. I also love that he prepares the herbs and puts them in these convenient pouches. I am new to acupuncture as I normally opt for a massage. I went in to visit Diem for the first time in July 2011. We had 2 acupuncture sessions. He was knowledgable in the area of nutrition, massage, and of course acupuncture. I was stressed and body didn't want to let go of 10-15 pounds it was hanging on to. I have to say his treatments helped my body release stress, his knowledge of nutrition gave me a bit more insight on what I needed to take out of my diet, and the care with which he interacted with me made me feel really at ease. I just returned for another treatment today Feb 8, 2012 because my forearms hurt as I work 100% online. Once again he sat with me asking questions to be sure of what kind of treatment I needed, gave me tips on how to avoid pain in my forearms, and then went to work with the amazing acupuncture session. Luckily, I only get a bad flare up only about once a year and my back will usually stop hurting within a few days. I just went here a couple days ago with excruciating sciatica with pains running all down my leg.
