Excellent work with flexible appointments. They were very effective treating my back injury.

We visited Barefoot Reflexology in Watertown to celebrate our anniversary -- our first visit in…read moreover ten years, when we had been regular customers. We will not be returning!!! From the moment we walked in, two staff members were arguing openly and continuously. There was no attempt to create any kind of relaxing atmosphere: no music, no greeting that acknowledged we were there to unwind. The space smelled unpleasant, the lighting was so dim we could barely see, and the chair coverings appeared heavily worn and felt grimy to the touch. The foot baths were lukewarm. Throughout the session, both practitioners talked non-stop to each other -- again, no music, no calm. My massage therapist applied the same painful stroke repeatedly along what felt like a nerve line on my arm and shin, over and over, to the point where I was wincing and cried out asking her to be please be gentle. That did not make a difference. My spouse's experience was worse: her practitioner struck her feet and legs with a force and rhythm that felt less like reflexology and more like frustration with her coworker being physically redirected at the client! We were also required to pay before the session -- $50 per person -- which is unusual and, given what followed, felt like a red flag we should have heeded. I see from other recent reviews that our experience is not an outlier. That's deeply unfortunate. This was once a place we trusted and recommended, albeit a decade ago. Whatever has changed in management or staffing, it shows.

The owner said he purchased the business in 2022 and did not have to honor the certificates. When the business was purchased it included all assets and liabilities including these gift certificates. I don't get a massage to relax, I get a massage because my body needs work, and I know what I want done. Yes, there's a language barrier here with SOME of the employees, including the older Chinese man that came as a recommendation from a friend. But OMG. That guy (don't know his name) worked MAGIC!! I was suffering severely from sciatica, and muscles all over my body were stressed out and in so much pain... I must have $500 over 3 sessions with him, but it was worth penny. The first time I told him what I needed done, and he did it. the second and third times I didn't say anything and he just KNEW what to do, he KNEW where to work on me without me saying, and I didn't need the same places worked on as the first time. Every time I left there I felt like I was walking on a cloud... he worked on me an hour and a half the first time, and 2 hours the other times. I tip him really well because he's worth it. Haven't had anyone else, and don't plan to. be patient with the language barrier and ask for the old man... 6 stars, really.

Mandarin Healing Spa's good reviews were promising but the massage was one of the worst I've had in recent memory. First, my masseuse was extremely rough, almost sloppy, in terms of technique. There were several parts where she was just raking her elbow or her fist on my back mechanically instead of working out the knots/kinks. I'm not necessarily looking for Mandarin Oriental-level of care but I didn't care for the sensation of feeling like a dummy being whaled on. And I mean that literally - she was actually punching me at one point. Hygiene was also an issue. From the constant sniffles, it sounded like she had a cold and even sneezed but kept right on going (here's hoping she sneezed into her elbow and not on her hands ... still, you should go wash your hands). The bed itself was not comfortable. Again, not expecting a ton out of a no-frills spot but I do prefer not to have particle board under the head rest digging into my cheek. When I checked the mirror afterwards, I had a lovely vertical indent going down my face. The interaction at the end left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. They're incredibly insistent that you pay the tip, if not the whole amount, in cash, which I can understand with very small businesses but I also would've appreciated a heads-up on the phone when I booked that using a credit card adds an extra $3.75 to the cost. Also, the manager was very pushy in asking for a 25% tip ($20 for a mediocre 60-minute $80 massage) and kept saying how most customers do $20 for an even $100. Regardless of how true that may be, a customer should be allowed to tip however much they want based on the experience they received, and, if it weren't for my desperation to take a shower and wash the germs off me, I would have stood firm. I've never had someone outright demand a higher tip and it was enough to make me never want to go back. Waste of $100.
