Underdog - Just 1 of the many delish beers on offer at Underdog!

Down the stairs into a snug corner of happiness and goodness, underneath Brogan's on Dame Street,…read morelies the glory and genius of Underdog. A craft beer geek's happy spot (not to sound redundant) that radiates spiritual purity and wonderment. A splendid place to try some beers by breweries of whom you may never have heard previously, but will if you can find this pleasure, little treasure. We were fortunate as human individuals that our Airbnb was located two floors above Brogan's -- and three floors above Underdog. No need for taxis after a late-night drinking spree, we could just stumble up the flights of stairs to our Airbnb and pass out. When you research the bars and locations of the Airbnbs you're considering, you find yourself at an incredible advantage. But I digress. To locate, you need to find Brogan's, which is down the street from the Olympia Theatre. Once you enter the front door, immediately turn to your left and walk down the flight of stairs into the cellar. You will turn right and walk down a hallway and arrive at the bar the Underdog. To reiterate, they have a massive craft beer selection from breweries I had never heard before, located in Ireland, the UK, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, and other countries. My choices comprised The Wild Beer Company Tepache Sour; the Boundary Brewing Whose Idea Was This? Double IPA, and the Mikkeller Peter, Pale, and Mary (PPM) Pale Ale. The first two came from breweries from whom I've never heard before, while everyone knows about Mikkeller and their penchant for producing excellent craft beer from their location in Denmark. The Tepeche was quite remarkable -- a perfect balance of funky brett with a zesty spiciness and sweet pineapple. The Evercreech, Somerset, England-brewery put something together that was special. The Whose Idea Was This? was a tasty beer, full of happiness and life, with lots of grapefruit and other citruses that made the beer from the Belfast-based brewery (Boundary) burst with juicy goodness. The PPM from Mikkeller was solid and an excellent way to close the tab. Underdog has the definitive coolness factor where you need to know where you're going to find it. Amongst the myriad of bars, pubs, restaurants, supper houses, and the like in Temple Bar, Dublin City Centre, Underdog is a massive find. Their craft beer selection is tops and should be sought after for those who love a delicious craft beer that they've never tried before.

Yes, it was a bit of hike get to this temple of Guinness goodness, but I would gladly do it again... and will the next time I'm in town.

It's next to a huge graveyard and was established in 1833 so the gravediggers could have a place to talk and drink their favorite beverage. There are two sections one is for drinking and the other is for eating. The folks there were super friendly as we first had a pint of delicious beer then we wandered to the food side. The service was excellent as I had the potato soup which was delicious and cheap. My wife and daughter split the Irish rolls and they fell in love with them. It was a great experience and I would definitely highly recommend anyone in Dublin to visit this place. This place is for anyone looking to have a pint of reasonable priced beer and delicious reasonably priced food plus the allure of the graveyard and all of its many different gravestones.

As soon as you walk in, you'll feel the warmth and community energy of a Dublin pub: chatter, laughter, and the comforting clink of glasses create an inviting atmosphere that's lively but never overwhelming. My party of four made a reservation for a Monday night at 7pm, and I'm glad we did - the restaurant was almost full, and by around 8:30pm, it was absolutely packed! We were immediately led to our reserved table, which you can book through their website. The menu includes plenty of options for everyone, including fried appetizers, salads, traditional Irish fare, and lots of sides. They don't have an actual drink menu, but our server was more than happy to walk us through what they had on tap; my dad and brother enjoyed a pint of Guinness and a local Irish lager, respectively. In terms of dishes, two members of my party weren't hungry, so they split an order of the Wrights of Marino Smoked Salmon (€12.95) and the Traditional Beef & Guinness Stew (€16.95). The smoked salmon dish was quite a good deal for only €13 - it was a sizable portion of thin slices of lox paired with capers, a tangy horseradish cream, a fresh vegetable salad that wasn't overly dressed (as pub salads often are), and a thick slab of their signature Guinness Brown Bread (more on this later). The Beef & Guinness Stew was a thick, hearty bowl of stewed Irish beef, root vegetables, and a savory broth with a touch of that distinct malty flavor of Guinness. It was delicious on its own, but elevated when paired with the bread (though my brother may have been onto something with using it as a dip for his chips). Another member of my party ordered their Traditional Fish & Chips (€19.95), which was a large piece of battered cod served with a heaping pile of thick-cut chips (fries), a mixed leaf salad, pea puree, and a creamy tartar sauce. The fish was beautifully flaky and moist in the interior, with the crispy batter on the outside lending a lovely crunch without being overly oily. The chips were truly the best we've had in Ireland, with a delectable crisp exterior and a creamy, almost mashed-potato-like inside; perfect with the briny richness of the tartar sauce. We weren't huge fans of the pea puree (we've had better at other pubs), which was a bit bland, though it was a good palate cleanser for the dish. I chose the Traditional Irish Lamb Stew (€18.95), which was another large bowl of filling stew. This broth was a bit thinner than the Beef & Guinness Stew, and had complex flavors of herbs and the root vegetables. The portion of lamb wasn't huge, but the meat was of good quality: it was tender and not overly gamey, simmered to a pull-apart texture. I also ordered a large portion of their Guinness Brown Bread (€5.50) to share with the rest of the table; while I'd normally balk at paying almost €6 for 3 slices of bread, this is award-winning brown bread; thick slabs of oaty, malty bread with a touch of sweetness, lovely when slathered with creamy Irish butter. I do wish that the bread had been served hot, but that was easily fixed when dipped in the steaming stew. Lastly, we ordered the Apple Tart (€8.50) and Bread & Butter Pudding (€8.50) for dessert; the former was decent, with spiced apples in a flaky pastry, topped with vanilla ice cream and almonds, but the real star was the Bread & Butter Pudding: pillowy soft bread soaked in a rich yet not overly-sweet custard, strewn with cinnamon and raisins. A decadent way to end our meal! We truly enjoyed our time at the Celt - it's the sort of place where locals and visitors mingle easily, whether you're there for hearty pub fare, a pint, or live music. It's fairly priced for its central location and generous portions, and a stellar choice for casual meals, drinks with friends, or an authentic Irish pub night!

The Beef Stew and Mac & Cheese was just what we needed! The Beef Stew was super flavorful, dark in color, nice bite sized chunks of beef (and plenty of them), and then a mound (!) of mashed potatoes on top. It was divine! The Mac & Cheese with pulled pork had a sweet-ish profile. Homemade Mac & Cheese is the base, and then pulled pork (in a BBQ sauce) is layered on top. THEN they sprinkle cheese over the whole thing to give it a nice crunchy top. They have beer flights ("taster trays") of the draft beer, plus cans available and even "casks" (which isn't on tap, and once opened needs to be drunk!) Last, the folks who work here are really nice and they seem to attract a very nice clientele. Plus there are games. This seems like a pretty special place all around.

Beef and Stout Stew: Lots of nice stewy liquid to go with the mashed potatoes. The beef itself was moderately tender. Not tough, though not fall apart. Some great flavors. Fish and Chips: Pretty standard. Crispy fish batter, flaky interior. Crispy chips and fluffy potato inside. The mushy peas where a bit too grainy and not that mushy actually.
