I've long dabbled in Magic the Gathering which has taken me from big stores to literal dungeon basements hidden by a trap door. Boldo's is closer to the second experience; it's on the smaller side, dark, and mysterious. The store has two floors, the first has their small selection of games and cards for sale while the second is overflow for their events. While it may not have the size and selection of other stores it does make up for it in charm and small local business. The people who run the events are knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate making it my preferred place when I'd play in leagues. Hungry? Ashort walk or drive from great good like Han's or Dogtown, you can satisfy your hankerings while doing a marathon of pre-release events. Boldo's is a neat spot for geeks in the center of Rochester. I had always heard that it was a treasure trove of old board games and that couldn't have been more true. Boldo's has out of print board games that can't be found in other local game shops, so make sure to stop in if you're looking for a "grail" game...they just might have it. They are also well stocked with the newest board games. They have a nice selection of Magic the Gathering cards and lots of RPG books as well. The inside of the store is quite dated and it's a bit tight on gaming space, so this may be more of a shopping destination than hang out and game. However there are tables upstairs and down so you can still get your game on. I'm really happy hobby shops like Boldo's are still around. It's fun to spend some time here looking at games you've never heard of and bringing some home to play. Next time you are in Rochester, you owe it to yourself to add Boldo's to the list. read more

The store has a diverse selection of games suited for ALL types of people and interests. I enjoy casual, simple and social games the attendee has recommended like Love Letters, flux and Avalon. The staff is passionate and knowledgeable about all ready games. They can give you more details and ask the right questions to find the shoppers interest. They also have a weekly schedule of activities open to all ages. Often there is a mix of adults, teens and adolescents in attendance. This is a neighborhood gem! What's not to like about a neighborhood Gaming store?! And I don't mean the electronic kind, I'm talking the needs-at-least-one-other-person-but-more-are-better-but-has-to-be-placed-in-person-face-to-face-kind. Whether you're into Magic, Warhammer, D&D, boardgames, or anything other type of IRL game they have it. I came here looking for a copy of Settlers of Catan, a german boardgame that I had recently become additcted to. Not only did they have it, they had both the 3rd edition and 4th edition copies of it plus some of the various expansion packs. They are a little pricey but if you are looking for something that's hard to find even online, they are the place to go. They also have leagues for Warhammer, Magic, and boardgames that are posted on their website. If you need to get a gift for someone who's in this scene and no nothing about it, no problem the staff is pretty knowledgeable and should be able to point you in the right direction. They don't have much parking and inside it's a bit of a jumble so before warned it's hard to find anything with out asking for assistance. I live near this establishment, I enjoy board games/ tabletop RPGs, I have money to burn. I've been there several times, all with disappointing results. Every time I've been here the individual working the counter was wrapped up in a computer game. Always acted like me being a customer interrupted them. A few times I walked out in frustration because of this. The place is dirty, unorganized, and filled with the most socially oblivious people I've ever met (the owner, Boldo himself, being the biggest eye sore in the place). My boyfriend made a specialty order for Dungeon Lords. Once the game arrived the package was quickly absorbed into the clutter and lost forever. The regulars/ employees are the type of people who give nerds a bad name. Bad manners (imagine Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons), body odors a normal person couldn't fathom, and inventory is stacked in hoarding piles with candy bar wrappers lining the floor. Save yourself the aggravation by making the drive to Millennium Games in Henrietta. read more

It's a touch out of the way, being that it is in Rochester and I pretty much hang out in Buffalo, but I like this store. They have a good selection of old and out of print games, as well as modern games. And just about everything is at least a few bucks off the cover price, which is cool. The place itself is still in the 80s-90s insofar as it's kind of a dank dungeon, not a lot of natural light, and the bathroom's pretty terrifying, but the people working have always been friendly and I've found some books that I was missing. Like, where else am I going to find Clanbook Tremere for less than the original shelf price? (Hint: not at Boldo's any more. I bought it.) So yeah, as far as gaming stores go, it's not a bad place to shop. read more

Fair selection of games, but the vast majority of them are suffering from severe amounts of shelf wear and torn shrink. Pricing is fair for the most part, but not for the damage to the game boxes. The place is very messy, with lots of scuzzy office chairs, old carpet, lots of clutter, and a visible back room that looks like a messy teenagers bedroom. Everything was covered in a layer of dust. Customer service was blah, the guy behind the counter was ready to help, but spent most of our visit watching something on his iPad. The place is pretty well hidden, stashed behind a large, overgrown front yard. read more

Stopped by here with my kids while I was visiting Rochester because we like to check out local Magic: The Gathering game stores. This is a small shop and pretty cluttered, but they have a good selection of singles and sealed product and are very friendly. Excellent prices (!!). read more

Went here last minute to purchase a birthday gift for my fiance. I didn't know what I wanted but I knew that they would have stuff he would enjoy. I gave the employee an idea and he helped steer me in the right direction and my fiance was really happy with the board game that was recommended. I didn't feel pressured into buying something really expensive (because in the situation I could have been easily persuaded to do so) . The cost of the game was very good in comparison to what I could have paid elsewhere (about a 5 dollar markup only), I would go here again for gifts to support this local establishment. read more

I agree with everything Robyn C said. The store is filthy and disorganized, the employees and regulars are equally slobbish and extremely rude and unprofessional. The main area in which I disagree with Robyn C is that Millenium is no better, in fact I'd almost say it's worse. Sure, it's clean and organized, but it doesn't smell any better and the crowd are just as bad as at Boldo's. Try Pair-A-Dice Games at the village gate. read more
