I went here approaching 11am- and there was only one empty table- so it was quite busy! The music was low and the place was not as loud since most people were studying/ but there were some quiet conversations- so the ambience and vibes were a good halfway point between calm and lively. I ordered a vanilla latte with whole milk. As you can see, the latte art was very cute, and it was not like EXTREMELY hot- it was perfect sipping heat. Also very affordable! The muffin was ginormous, and yummy- had to split it with a friend. And I love that there was a toaster and a microwave to heat up any of your goodies! Will be back again! read more

Stopped by Bollos on Tuesday morning! Thankfully they have early hours and I was able to swing by right around 7. I parked on College Ave (metered parking doesn't start until 9am) and walked a short half block to the entrance. I was promptly greeted when I walked in and the lady working offered to answer any allergy questions. They specifically list out allergens and restrictions on each sign (gluten, nuts, vegan, etc). There is a plethora of fresh baked pastries to choose from as well as coffee. I had trouble deciding but opted for a GF peach scone and a GF strawberry banana muffin. The muffin was delicious and the scone was also pretty great, kinda dry...but that's just how most scones are! I'm sure this is a home-town favorite in Blacksburg. I'm not from Blacksburg. My daughter attends VT. I stopped in one morning for a coffee while waiting for her to meet me. I asked if I could sit and wait for her while enjoying a cup of coffee. I was told I could, "for a little bit." Meanwhile, there was one gentleman occupying a 4-seat table reading a book. Another table had a local lady with a book who was talking loudly with a standing gentleman about COVID-19. I ordered my coffee and a stale piece of carrot cake. I was graciously granted a seat in the corner to consume what I ordered, which I did rather quickly. Like I said, this place may be a local favorite. This place is a really nice little nook! I was under the false impression that sandwiches were made to order, when it was really more of a "grab a pre-made sandwich from the cooler" type of deal. That being said, it's still a stellar bakery. I've gone 3 times in the past week on my visit to Blacksburg, each time trying out something new and vegan. Sadly on the last day they didn't have any chickpea salad sandwiches, I was looking forward to trying them I tried these vegan pastry options; Blackberry Muffin, Raspberry Oat Bar, Pumpkin Brownie, Raspberry Chocolate Cake, and Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffin. They were all so good! I wish we had a Bollo's back home. The Blackberry Muffin was topped with those thick crunchy sugar crystals, the Raspberry Oat Bar was very sweet and one of my favorites. The Pumpkin Brownie was super fudgy in consistency and was really rich. I think the Raspberry Chocolate Cake was my all-time favorite; the frosting on the top was super chocolatey and thick, and the bottom was really sweet with all the fruit. The Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffin was my last purchase and tasted really good, very moist and not crumbly like some muffins can be. The top was a bit harder then the rest because of exposure to air and such but I didn't mind! I'm glad they left out the chunky sugar crystals for this one, it was fun on the blackberry muffin but chocolate and pumpkin need no sprinkles. I definitely recommend this to everyone who likes tasty treats! I also had a sip of their Ambrose tea and it was very fruity and sweet. The staff has always been nice to me. read more

I am so glad that I decided to try Bollo's cafe and bakery. I was looking for something that had vegan options so that my dad and brother could enjoy dessert as well. We walked in and the woman at the counter was busy talking to two bike riders, and she was filling their camelbaks. I found that to be a very nice gesture. After much debate, I chose to order an oat fudge bar. My dad got a vegan strawberry lime muffin. The woman working was very sweet and helpful. I wanted to like this bakery. I bought a loaf of bread labeled 'French'. It looked good but had no taste and chewing it was like eating a rubber tire. I had to throw the loaf in the trash. Pretty cool college-oriented coffee shop in Blacksburg not far from Virginia Tech's campus. It's small, however, and gets quite crowded. As in, small enough you have trouble perhaps weaving around seats patrons getting to your own table. However, they have a great selection of coffee drinks, pastries and other goodies (they had a very good pecan pie when I was there on a Saturday in November) and the staff is friendly. The shop is quite small and finding seating can be difficult during busy hours. However, I do appreciate that they are open later than most coffee shops in Blacksburg. I generally do my own baking, so it's rare when I like a bakery's offering well enough to buy it again, rather than recreating it at home. Bollo's muffins are one of the baked goods; I buy again and again. Particularly, their Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins, well until today. I don't know if it is COVID or the Holiday, but the muffin I had today was old and not discounted. Normally, Bollo's discounts older baked goods, and the customer gets what they pay for, and it is all above board. The muffin I bought today was supposedly baked today, only it was not. My muffin was old. Pumpkin chocolate chip does not age well; A rock is a more apt description of what I consumed. While these muffins are always hefty, freshly baked, they are never dry or tough, both were the case this morning. While I still like Bollo's Muffins in principal, and they are an excellent pairing to their locally-sourced dark roast coffee. I was very disappointed by today's experience. read more

Wanted to branch out and find somewhere new to do work. Went not knowing what to expect and wasn't overly impressed. Instantly felt out of place and not welcomed when I walked in. You can tell there are regulars there and the workers have formed relationships with them which was neat to see but as a newcomer, did not feel at all welcomed. My friend asked a question about one of the teas there and the lady rudely said "I drink coffee" and hurried her along with her order. We ate our pastries and drank our tea and quickly left to go somewhere we knew we felt comfortable. The cha cha chai was really good and there is a large tea and coffee selection which was neat. I've been going to Bollos for the past 3 years. Yesterday I went in and ordered a House coffee carafe to go. When I went in to pick it up, the manager was yelling at the employee behind the counter for giving me a sleeve of 50 cups instead of 25. Her tone was along the lines of 'how can you be so stupid.' I wish I could remember what she actually said because it was horrible. It was extremely unprofessional, extremely disrespectful to the employee, and very uncomfortable as a customer to witness. It is a college town coffee shop. It is good at what it does. It's crowded and atmospheric. The music playing at any given moment represents the tastes of the barista on duty. There is local art displayed on the (exposed brick) walls. You'll get lectured on how to properly support small, local businesses if you try to pay with a credit card. It is full of regulars. Here's the secret: They have the best coffee in town. I am not kidding. The pastries are great. On top of all that, Bollos is also the best (indoor) people watching spot in Blacksburg. How can you fit in? Question: Do you ride a fixie? No? You don't know what a fixie is? It's ok, we can work around it. Here is what you do. Come in and order coffee. Keep coming back. Bring cash (no plastic accepted). You'll get to know people. Eventually the barista will remember your order. You'll figure out the best time of day to find a free seat. Better yet, you'll make a friend who you can get to scoot his books over and let you share his precious table no matter when you arrive. Insider tip: If you are a poor student and love lattes, order a cafe au lait. A suitable substitute for the latte you love, but the same price as a regular coffee. read more

One of the best independant coffee shops in town. The coffee is delicious, the people who work there are really friendly and the atmosphere is very welcoming. A nice place to get some work done (free wireless) and a great place to have a cup of coffee with friends. I always take friends here when they visit. My only complaint is that it's a rather small space. Perhaps it's crowded just because a lot of people frequent it, but sometimes, it can be hard to find a seat and that's the only reason why I don't give it 5 stars. Wonderful atmosphere and decor, with great coffee for a good price. I've been a regular for years now, decided to finally write up a real review. Bollo's is the best hangout spot in Blacksburg, a lovely little hole in the wall. I love sitting in the back reading and listening to the bakers' banter. The atmosphere and staff are what makes the establishment. Everybody I've met has been a genuinely friendly and pleasant person. The aesthetic is a draw for me, with few tables, wooden benches, painted brick walls, lovely art of the business, and posters & flyers promoting local events giving it a real and authentic feel.. The music is never playing too loudly, and is either set to the college radio station or something tasteful: you can tell they don't just set it to SiriusXM's "Coffee Shop" station. The coffees and teas are the cheapest in town (75¢ if you get a mug and take advantage of their refill policy) and generally very good: the coffee is refershingly un-burnt compared to another local coffee shop (you know the one) . The fancier drinks are overpriced, but that goes for every coffee shop. Pastries are handmade in the bakery in the back, and delicious. Best in town. I especially recommend the chocolate oat bars and grossly over-sized cinnamon rolls. Unfortunately, Aaron left, so no more raspberry preserve doughnuts. Lemon bars and cookies are good, muffins are about as good as muffins can be. Unfortunately, they've added a lot of gluten free items recently, so the delicious-looking muffin or cookie you're about to order may not be as good as it looks, but I can't fault them for trying to stay trendy (at least not in this instance). Be aware that it's cash only: no debit cards. Not sure about checks, but I'm not about to write out a $2 check so I doubt I'll ever find out. Also, many bike racks out front. read more

Super cool coffee shop! Really good drinks (the best I've had in blacksburg), friendly staff, and amazing baked goods. You can tell that they bake everything fresh and I've never been disappointed with anything I've tried. They have a good selection of vegan and vegetarian options which is nice. It has a little bit of a hipster vibe that turns some people off or maybe makes them feel out of place/unwelcome, but everyone (patrons and employees) are very kind and try to make people feel at home. My husband and I were exploring the town and wanted some coffee. Pros: cute location Cons: awkward staff, and crammed seating. I order their blended chai and it was very watery, then I ordered a blended mocha and it was like bitter chocolate milk. I think that they possibly have good ingredients but their recipes aren't good. Their proportions are off and that's why their blended drinks were very un appetizing. They might need more training.
