It saddens me to leave a negative review about Our Daily Bread, but my most recent experience was very disappointing. I have lived in Blacksburg my whole life and ODB has been a go-to bakery for most locals for a while. Serving a variety of pastries, cakes, breads, and offering lunch, brunch, and dinners. They have a lovely variety of options for customers to enjoy. The bakery primarily serves French pastries and caters to French cuisine at their meals. Although they offer more than just French inspired food. In the past, my family and I have enjoyed grabbing their cakes for celebrations and individual pastries from their pastries case. But recently, they have not been up to par and have left us very unsatisfied. The cakes have been dry and do not taste fresh at all. On my latest visit I tried a couple of things, all of which were cold, with dry, crumbly textures. It was evident to me that these pastries were not made day-of and had clearly sat in a fridge for at least one night (if not more). I found this to be extremely disappointing as ODB used to have a reputation of serving FRESH baked goods and pastries. I cannot attest for the hot food they serve during meal times, but the pastries and cakes have gone down hill. Over the winter break, I had their NY cheesecake bar (which I've gotten in the past and it was phenomenal) and it fell so short of what I remembered. It was lacking flavor and the crust at the bottom was dry. This past visit, I tried a Napoleon (also have had this before and really enjoyed it), a specialty cake, a scone, and a couple macarons and macaroons. The Napoleon was so cold and the puff pastry was super stale, it practically fell apart the second I tried to eat it. The specialty individual cake slice was also very cold and the cake wasn't moist at all. Again, indicating it was not fresh or made day-of. The scone was also a disappointment as it was dry and lacked any moisture. I thought the macrons and macaroons were fine though. While most of this was disappointing, the price didn't help either. Nothing was inexpensive and the quality was completely missing. So disappointing to leave this review as I used to enjoy coming here for sweet treats. It's sad to see that ODB is unfortunately not what it used to be. I will note that the service is very friendly and they do their best dealing with customers. Could have been more efficient, but I did go during a busier time. I hope they can turn things around, but until then I do not think I will be retuning soon. read more

I went here recently for a late brunch on a Saturday morning. It was fairly empty to my surprise. I ordered a southwest omelette but it was super bland. Please season your eggs! Arrived to find a clean dining area which was nice, the room was populated with locals as well. A good sign. I ordered a coffee, the crab cake Benedict and a side of sausage and hash browns. They got the order wrong twice, had to be sent back. The only thing they got right was the sausage which was mediocre The "Benedict" wasn't a Benedict at all ( no English muffin, just poached eggs on bad hash browns). Overall a regrettable experience, not worth the nearly 30 bucks. This sort of establishment would topple should a Waffle House enter town. Avoid like the plague. read more

We had a Spooky Salmon omelette and Halloweeny breakfast. So fun! The house brew coffee was tasty, but the Carmel latte was average. It's solid - the food was good, but service was only okay. It wasn't super busy around lunch time on a Saturday (of a holiday weekend) so I was surprised with the minor mishaps. Our Daily Bread is one of my favorite spots in Blacksburg. Every time I am in town I spend way too much money on bakery items to bring back to friends and family. The Stöllen available around Thanksgiving and Christmas time is so incredibly delicious and I look forward to getting some every year. They have a great collection of pastries that are all done well. Brunch is always so nice. They offer a special brunch menu every weekend in addition to all the typical breakfast items you could want. I usually get whatever comes with a homemade croissant and jam! The staff is always friendly and helpful. Ordering is done at the cash register. You receive a number and they bring your food and drinks to you. There is a separate line specifically for the bakery. It's a small dining area that stays full during brunch hours, but I've never had any trouble getting a seat. Sometimes local musicians play music inside or on the patio. read more

This is a good local spot in Blacksburg. I had been here a couple of times as a student and enjoyed. Visiting as an alumni, it stills holds up well. The meat lovers omelette was really good. I forgot how packed their omelette are. It's a really good omelette though! They also have plenty of daily/weekly specials you can order. The service was a little off but I attribute that to it being the beginning of the semester and the employees still learning the job. Other than that, everyone was friendly and helpful. The ambiance is a little local cozy restaurant. In a town that keeps tearing down old buildings for new ones, it's nice to have cozy feeling places. Parking: it is located in a shopping center area, so there are a ton of parking spaces. No need to worry about this! Seating: this is something you may have to worry about. There isn't a ton of seating and a lot of people like to go here, so it can be hard to find tables for a large party. I would suggest to go when Tech students are on break and not on the weekends. Food: the food was really good! I enjoyed my omelette & waffle! It tasted like a home cooked meal. The chocolate waffle has a lot of childcare drizzled on top, so take caution when you order that. Crowded on a Sunday morning even at 10 am but thankfully was able to find a seat with the help of friends! The line gets long too, so probably had to wait 15 minutes until I could order something. I got one of their brunch specials - something with waffles and almonds and bourbon syrup. I also got their blackberry lemonade. For an $8 dish, that's such a good deal with two waffles! It's definitely filling, and the butter on the side helps so much with easing the sugary syrup. The dish was good, but way too sweet for my personal preference. The lemonade was super sweet too, I felt like they put a ton of sugar in it. Overall, the price point is worth it for brunch and I get the hype, but the items I got were way too sweet. We ordered a Tiramisu. When we went to pick it up, we were ignored by at least 4 employees, one of which was the manager. They acknowledged a customer by name, that was in line in front of us. Her order was not ready and they apologized, she replied with "go ahead and help the next person". Which they refused to do. She did this TWICE, with 2 different employees and each time the employee ignored us and continued to talk to her. The tiramisu was SUCH a disappointment! It is bland! The espresso flavor is barely noticeable and there are large dry patches of lady fingers throughout the entire cake. For Blacksburg, this place is okay. Anywhere else, it would be mediocre. The pastries are good. The omelets and other prepared breakfast meals are overly heavy and greasy. The service is the weakest link. For instance, servers haven't been trained how to prepare things 'for here' or 'to go'. They serve you cappuccino in a to-go cup when you ordered for here, or ask "on a plate or in a bag?" when you order a pastry "for here" - why would you want to eat out of a bag when you are sitting at a table? Bought a container of egg salad on the way out and loved it. Came back today hoping to buy some more but it was already sold out. Thankfully I stopped crying long enough to write this review. On this occasion I went with the Crab Cake and poached eggs over hashbrowns with hollandaise sauce. Loved it. Wife shared her omelette with spinach, turkey breast, cheese. The potential was great, but the bottom line was average. First time visiting after having this business on a place to try for quite some time. The location is Blacksburg off Main St., but it's pretty close to the Christiansburg line. Find them in a strip by a nail salon. Parking seems adequate and the lot tidy. The walk up revealed a patio with warmers not in use on my Saturday morning brunch. The interior space was a bit of a let down as I found it very ordinary. Tables add chairs jammed in, no wall decor that I recall. This equals an ambiance that's not welcoming to linger and enjoy. Live music was offered a ok if you enjoy honky tonk, country vibe. The counter with baked goods is to the left and was eye popping! Cakes, pastries and even macaroons were packed in the case ready for a weekend rush. They have a separate checkout for bakery. The staff woman I conversed with was nice and was happy to answer questions. The right side has a few of their breakfast items displayed on plates and the visual was welcoming . Tens of laminated menus were strewn all over the counter which was not so attractive to my eye. I gave it a glance before and then consulted with the super friendly cashier. I confirmed Eggs Florentine would be my choice as you rarely see it on a menu. I got a side of ham and cheese croissant that looked scrumptious in the case. I paired up with a house white chocolate latte. A number is given for you to put on the table. The dining room was pretty congested, but I did locate a seat. A lot of groups and families were present and the free standing tables make it easy to expand from a four to a six and even eight. There is only one booth that is by the door. A runner brought my coffee and it arrived first and came out in a cup and saucer the way I requested. However, it was a sloppy mess with coffee running down the side and a pool in the saucer. Quality control is severely lacking to let this occur. The taste did not fair much better with a hint of white chocolate. It was hot was about all I can say that's positive. My brunch order hit the table around 15 minutes after the order was placed. That's excellent considering the crowd. The visual of the eggs and croissant strong. The ham and cheese croissant was warm and pretty good. The Eggs Florentine was a let down. The dish was served warm, eggs cooked correctly, bread on the bottom crisp. A side of dry arugula salad odd, but fresh. The first bite of yoke eggs, bread and hollandaise was a bit uneventful. Not bad, just average. The hollandaise was runny and flavorless. This was so disappointing. After finishing I located the self bussing area in the rear. It's proximity was not good at all for traffic flow to the restrooms and nearby self serve coffee bar. However, it was clean and neat. I experienced the jam up and not pretty. I wanted to love, but it wasn't in the cards this time around. I'm willing to try again the next time in town. 3.5, rounding down. read more

Today's lunch options included a brie sandwich, quinoa stuffed mushrooms, quiche with brie and asparagus, lobster bisque and a chicken plate. All were pretty decent. I liked the quinoa mushrooms and brie sandwich the most. The service is quick but not particularly friendly, probably because it's always busy and they have to keep up with many orders and customers.
