Cute 50s style motel right on St Pete's Beach. My family has been coming here for 40+ years. We have stayed at other locations around the area but this place triumphs any other experience we have had. They have a bar & grille called Sandbar Bills. They have AMAZING burgers. Locals come and eat here as well as guests from other resorts. They have a large outdoor seating so you can sit in the shade or the sun depending on what you are wanting that day. What a gem! We stayed here over night on an impulse, and we are so glad we did. My sister-in-law told us their bar's rum runners we're good, and that's all we heard before arriving. We hot a nice suite with mini kitchnett which was perfect for our family. It had two heated, clean pools, which our kids loved. We loved the Sandbar so close from the pool and in view of the beach! Don't judge a hotel by it's outside sign and front lobby area is what I learned on this trip. If I was driving on Gulf Blvd to find a hotel, I would have kept on driving past as this isn't the type of hotel I usually stay at. To say I was pleasantly surprised is a huge understatement. One of my friends recommended the Bon Aire as she and her husband have stayed numerous times and have enjoyed it. She kept telling me, "it's not fancy, so don't expect a lot." I agree, it isn't fancy, but it's just what I was looking for; a clean, comfortable place to stay for a quick weekend get-a-way with one of my girlfriends. We stayed for three nights - we were informed that we'd have to change rooms after the first night but would be able to leave our luggage with them. My ONLY complaint is not having a secure place to store our luggage. We were told to "just leave it in the lobby" unfortunately leaving a suitcase full of my personal belongings next to a map rack on the other side (where customers walk) near the exit door is not my idea of a safe holding place for luggage. People are walking in and out of the lobby all day. We weren't the only guests changing rooms that day (other suitcases sitting out) - so either they need to do a better job of booking rooms so this doesn't happen as frequently or have a locked area to put luggage. Even putting luggage in the back office or behind the front desk would have been a reasonable accommodation. It's something that I would expect from a hotel if they are asking guests to do this as the majority of us are flying in and don't have a car to put them in when we're waiting for our new room. The majority of the staff was awesome!! Had a couple issues with one employee at the front desk who I'll call "J" who was not at all friendly, very short, and on the rude side. However the rest of the staff at the front desk, housekeeping, and bartenders at Sandbar Bills were great! The staff especially at Sandbar Bill's were super friendly and the drinks were great as was the food and reasonably priced, which is something that doesn't always happen, especially in a touristy area. I loved how the hotel was literally steps away from the beach. This is my first time to St. Pete Beach but not Florida. I'm used to having to walk a long way to get to the sand, not here - it's amazing! Our second room was on the second floor which I would request again as many of the early risers were grouping up for their morning coffee (5:30am) right outside our first floor bedroom window and it got a bit noisy. This hotel is also within walking distance to Walgreens and Publix as well as cute and delicious restaurants and morning lattes All in all, I had a great time!! I highly recommend the Bon Aire. If you're looking for a beachy resort, and have no agenda, and want to stay in a family owned resort that takes you back in time, this is the place for you. I would have given it five stars if it wasn't for the lack of secure luggage storage. read more

The Bon-Aire is an amazing place. Whether as a couple or the whole family, this is the best place to stay. It has two heated pools, the best bar on the beach, and is right on the Gulf. We have stayed twice and have loved both stays. They offer rooms in various sizes. Some have full kitchens, while others have mini kitchens, but larger bathrooms. The food and Rum Runners at Sand Bar Bills bring in people from all over St. Pete Beach. The staff is also wonderful. One of the cleaners accidentally vacuumed over my phone charger cord, and they replaced it the same day. It will remind you of a 1970's motel but it is completely updated. I struggled to decide between 4 or 5 stars, but decided to round up from a 4.5 because the employees & management obviously care & try to do a good job here. FYI this is not a 5-star luxury hotel, so there needs to be managed expectations. It's a mid-century motor motel on a huge expanse of gorgeous beach, and they do a very good job of being what they are - a great little place for people to affordably enjoy time together in a clean, comfortable room at a property with a vintage vibe, located in a beautiful locale. We were there for a very quick trip, mid-covid, to do a college visit. The hotel was social distancing well, taking all precautions including requiring masks in the lobby, providing single-use pens, & limiting the overall number of guests, number of people in the lobby, and in the pool/public areas. The lady who checked us in was very helpful & friendly. She was encouraging & sweet to my daughter, which I appreciated so much. The grounds & exterior of the hotel are beautifully maintained. The parking areas are well lit & the landscaping is lovely. The place is so cute, painted white with turquoise doors/trim and darker blue accents. Very retro mid-century vibes, taking me back to my childhood when these places were just passing out of their heydays. My daughter said she felt like she was back in the 50s even though she doesn't know what that even was like. :D We loved the large, script neon signage in front and got a laugh out of the typical one letter being out - my daughter declared it to be fate because it looked like we were staying at the Bon Ire hotel, and Bon Ire is kinda what we do. We took a photo for posterity of the Good Anger hotel. We were in a studio room with 2 beds, mini fridge and microwave. It had a nice sized closet with plenty of hangers, and an electronic SAFE! I was pleased to find a hair dryer provided, as I'd forgotten mine. They also had a coffee maker with to-go cups, iron/ironing board, shampoo & conditioner, and one chair which we wedged against the door to the adjoining room for added peace of mind. We were pleasantly surprised by how comfortably we slept. This probably had something to do with the room being so clean that we couldn't even feel any sand on the tile floors. The furniture was basic & sparse, and there was no wall decor at all, but the beds were very comfortable & the pillows were perfect. We were towards the front of the hotel & heard a few loud trucks going by now & then, but otherwise it was quiet. The "through the wall" a/c unit kept the room nicely cool on two very muggy "feels like" 108 degrees days. It ran quietly and was angled so that it wasn't blowing directly onto the beds. We were grateful for the ceiling fan & utilized it day & night. The bathroom was very clean. Counter space was sparse. The shower had the best water pressure of anywhere I've ever bathed; it practically exfoliated!! There was a small, textured glass window in the bathroom, which thankfully didn't open. I would have preferred to have an exhaust fan, as it was necessary to shower with the door open to minimize the steaminess. Also if the door was left closed, the bathroom got hot quickly because it has no a/c of its own. The only thing I really didn't like about our room was all the entry points to the outside. There were two entry doors, three windows and a door to an adjoining room. I would have very much appreciated some kind of extra interior locks in addition to the deadbolts. However, these concerns didn't stop us from sleeping soundly & we had absolutely no security issues at all. The area as a whole feels very safe. There were no druggies, prostitutes, vagrants or ruffians anywhere. We saw only families, groups of friends, and couples enjoying themselves & using the property as it is designed. All the other guests were courteous & followed the rules, & the property was very quiet at night. Our car was safely parked outside the door of our room each night with no issues. Finally, there is a lot to do in the area. Publix & other grocery chains are only a sweaty walk down the road, and there is a Walgreens directly across the street. There are several fast food restaurants nearby, Chick-Fil-A, McD, and Dunkin to name a few. We enjoyed a stellar breakfast at Frog Pond Restaurant one morning, a fantastic Italian dinner at Buona one evening & a really delicious Greek dinner at Skidder's the next. We enjoyed smoked mullet for lunch at Ted Peters Smoked Fish Hut. We enjoyed the surprisingly good Imagine Museum of glass art, & perused the expensive, but not as good as expected, Salvador Dali museum. We are already making hopeful plans to return with the rest of our family for a lengthier stay. read more

My husband and I found what we thought was a gem last October and it turned out to be extremely disappointing. When we looked at the property in October, It wasn't like the guy at the desk wanted us to stay he just happen to have the worst week of weather available so that's when he booked us. By the way he acted as if he couldn't care less as to whether we booked or not which doesn't come across well frankly. If you don't hear anything I say in this review, hear this; do not go to this area and expect good weather on the fourth week of January... it's definitely a crapshoot. Five days were cold and rainy and two days were cold and windy with no sun. You couldn't swim in the pool because it was too cold you couldn't go down to the beach because it was too cold and windy...But that is not why I'm giving this business a bad review. After staying for a week, Not a fan. I thought I would like this motel. I knew it was a motel and being on the beach I understood what the value was...I thought. After a week here, glad to leave and not return. 1. Don't bother getting the best room.... Not at all worth it. You are staying at a cheap motel. On a beautiful beach. View: our window was not clean. The view was blurry. The wooden blinds didn't operate. Very hard to open. 2. You will make your own bed 5 days out of 7. Hope your a great housekeeper....Do you know how when you use towels in the bathroom the pile up?? They say that if you put them out by 12 o'clock The motel will pick them up.the way they ask you to they will sit on your chair. They will not get picked up....for days. Finally you will have to find a bin somewhere on the property. 3. The staff (except for the front desk who do not have a choice) does not speak to anyone... they don't have to ....they have no obligation to say good morning,hello good night ....nothing. Don't expect them to acknowledge you in anyway. 4. The only highlight is the bar...they have very good food and good drinks and the staff is cheerful which I found a big surprise. Would I ever return here? heck no....but they don't really care because of their low prices they have their rooms booked till there's a downturn and when that happens I can guarantee that this place will be in trouble. Best kept secret on St. Pete beach. Currently getting work done so we couldn't stay there for our recent St. Pete trip but I wanted to write a review anyway. The hotel is old with character. It has a smaller feel to it as well. The rooms are basic and they don't pretend to be anything they aren't. Noise levels are reasonable and it's on the beach. I don't think you can find a better hotel on St. Pete beach for the money. Two pools and a killer outdoor bar with food. Good food too not cheap frozen food sold for a ridiculous amount. I'd even venture to say they have the best cheeseburgers anywhere. I'd almost go back to eating meat for them. You won't find a better hotel on St. Pete beach for the price. read more

Booked this hotel for a two night stay in June 2017. I was looking for a hotel that had a distinct "retro" feel that reminded me of places my grandparents would stay at in the 70's. I found a lot of good reviews on the Bon-Aire and based on the pictures online I decided this would be a good fit. We arrived just after 4:00pm and our room was ready for us. The desk staff were very helpful giving us suggestions on places to eat and things to do. Despite the hotel being full when we were staying there we never had a problem finding parking. Our room was in the center section with the pool that opened right onto the beach. The room was clearly renovated recently with fresh paint and a very clean look. The bathroom was especially well done, with new sink, toilet and a very attractively tiled shower. The king-sized bed was very comfortable and not too soft, which is a frequent problem I have with hotels. The room also had the biggest wall-mounted television I have ever seen in a hotel room. I didn't measure it, but I would guess at least 56" in size. The room also had a kitchenette that included a two burner stove, microwave, coffee pot and mini fridge. The coffee supplied with the room was appreciated and allowed us to enjoy coffee on the beach in the mornings. We also used the stove to reheat some leftovers from a local place. They included all pots, pans, dishes and utensils to make simple meals in you plan on staying there longer. Also appreciated were the beach towels, since I never remember to pack those when we travel. The grounds were very nicely landscaped and maintained. There are plantings everywhere that give the hotel a very nice look. While enjoying my morning coffee I observed the staff cleaning and preparing the grounds for day. The hotel opens right onto the beach and the hotel has provided beach chairs and a volleyball net for guests to use. The hotel does sit back a bit from the ocean, so you do have a bit of a walk to get to the water, but the all the white sand makes for a pretty view. The two pools are both heated and very nice. Sandbar Bill's in a small outdoor bar at the back of the hotel that sits right on the beach. It has a nice selection of food and drinks available. They are open until 10:00pm each night with food available to 8:00pm. You can sit at the bar or one of the many tables they have surrounding it. Prices were surprisingly reasonable for a place right on the beach. I was very happy with this hotel and recommend it to anyone looking for that "Retro Florida" experience. read more

Bon Aire Resort has been the summer destination for our family for over 10 years and it never disappoints! The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff is always friendly and accommodating, and the resort has amenities needed for a family of five (including three kids) to vacation happily (two pools, beach access, shuffle board, etc.). Over the past few years, updates have been made and include renovated rooms, electronic door access to rooms (w/ wristband key access), and a new beach front seating area. Plus, your within five feet of delicious, and reasonably-priced, food and drinks at Sandbar Bill's Bar & Grille. Two issues: 1. This resort is definitely not up-to-date with ADA compliant access to rooms, pools, etc. 2. The resort has a limited amount of parking spots and when you find one you have to squeeze in and cross your fingers not to bump the vehicle next to you. read more

We're locals and wanted to book a one night hotel on the beach for our anniversary. I booked a room at Bon-Aire then 5 days before our expected check in the weather was calling for severe thunderstorms all day the day of our stay, so I called to ask if we could switch our reservation to another night or cancel. I was informed that they had charged my card the night I made the reservation and that room charges are non-refundable and not able to be changed within a two week window of scheduled check in. Mind you, this was not disclosed when I made the reservation nor is this policy on their website. When I addressed this with Bon-Aire staff I was told "you should have gotten an email" with the cancellation policy. I searched my email and there was nothing at all from the hotel. When I told them this, they repeated "you should have gotten an email." as if them forgetting to send the email made it ok for them to keep my money. We went in the pouring rain and other than location, this motel has nothing going for it. Pool area is locked until 10am, everything is outdated. You can hear complete conversations in the room next to you. I should have stayed home and just disputed the charge on my card since their "policy" of charging customers in full and not allowing cancellations isn't disclosed anywhere and I didn't authorize this use of my card. Lesson learned for me, but I hope this helps someone else decide not to make the same mistake I did. There are plenty of hotels on St. Pete Beach with better amenities, customer service, and business practices. Keep looking. read more

I'm really loving Bon-Aire Resort! As I'm typing this review, I'm actually sitting in my room on the 2nd floor, in the comfy large queen bed, with the TV on and the cold air blowing from the A/C. Besides the humming of the air conditioner, I can occasionally hear people talking, laughing and passing in the walkway. I enjoy hearing the occasional sounds of life from outside, it reminds me, on this beautiful Friday night, that people are close by, living and enjoying life. Here's what I love about Bon-Aire- the grounds are beautifully kept, landscaped with palms trees, plumeria trees and other tropical plants. It really adds to the beautiful backdrop of this place. Another thing I love is that it sits right on the beach, I mean you walk out of your room and within a few steps you are feeling soft white sand between your toes. This motel is older so if you're expecting modern and sleek, this is not the place for you. This place is low key with a vintage 50s quintessential old school Florida feel. This is a great place for families or young couples looking to experience a taste of relaxation with good old fashioned fun. At two stories tall, the motel is intimate without being overly crowded. They have two heated well maintained pools. The rooms aren't the largest, but mine was clean with a comfortable bed, clean, plush linens, and an ice cold blowing air conditioner (all the essentials in my book). Outside of each room on the walkway is a set of chairs perfect for people watching, relaxing or catching a beautiful Florida sunset. The woman working the front desk was super friendly and helpful, as was the young lady working the beachside bar. Speaking of beachside bar, this is a cool, popular little hang out for guests and locals alike. People walk right up off the beach for a cold beverage or to grab a bite to eat. I had a cheeseburger and it was delicious- they are hand made burger patties and grilled over charcoal! Besides the two heated pools, the beachside bar and grille, there is a volleyball net, a shuffle board, outdoor tables, lounge chairs that face the beach, and laundry on site. I really am loving this place- I feel safe, I don't feel out of place in some fancy, high end, uncomfortable, staged hotel. This is exactly what I was looking for- I have easy access to everything I need. I can open my front door or sit outside and enjoy the outdoors. No elevators, no big lobby, no oversized pool, no crowds. This is a great, genuine place to relax and unwind and just enjoy the beautiful Florida lifestyle. read more

This is a charming beachside motel from the 1950s. The basic rooms are very basic - no hair dryers, no free shampoo, etc. My room was decent and clean, but not exactly sparkling. It wasn't the kind of room I'd want to hang out in and relax; you stay here to enjoy St. Pete's Beach. The outside of the motel is in great condition. And it is really right ON the beach. It was at full capacity when I was there - many families and older couples come here annually to vacation. It's a family-owned motel, and everyone there was very friendly and genuine. read more

This is actually a review for Bon-Aire's "Sandbar Bill's Bar and Grille." If you've read any of my reviews you'll know I've been coming to this area for about 25 years now. However, only 14 of those have been as an adult, and only 11 of those have been during legal drinking age. The area so seriously lacks quality bars for outsiders but I understand the nature of the beast that is St. Pete Beach so I will stop the rant there. Moving on...as you walk on the beach you often wonder where the hell do I go to grab a decent sandwich and a beer around here. The beach itself is usually a 50-100 yard swath of blinding white sand so it makes it difficult to judge if that small cluster of cabana tops over yonder are tops of outdoor bars or tops of some tiny hotel with no such amenities. In addition, if are able to glean that it is a bar/grill establishment..is it worth going to? Tough choices after spending hours in the sun. To add to the issue do you want to spend an arm and a leg on something because you are not sure of all of the above, i.e. go to the Don's outdoor (beautiful) deck for drinks and grub. Sandbar Bill's is the answer to all of the above. The menu is straight up bar food. However, it is done well, with no real frills, and of a very reasonable price. Chances are you can't go wrong. Drinks: mad cheap. Patio: even during the height of tourist season I can always find a chair to watch the beach. It is large and user friendly. Staff: Each and every bartender I've had has been effecient and friendly...if not downright wonderful to deal with. Patrons: well...it is Florida so....you'll see the average knucklehead tourist often. Probably a knuckleheaded college group on occasion. The regulars of retirees who are 15 minutes in the sun away from becoming a leather handbag. basically the clientèle runs the gamut which I think actually makes for a great blend and keeps the stereotypes in check. Everyone is all doped up on Vitamin D and booze so enjoy the crowd and the view. This is always a stop for me whenever I am at the beach. Therefore that makes me a 3-4x/year regular I guess. Oddly enough we were recognized recently...I thought that was something special. Kudos to the good memory on the bartender. read more

This resort is Old Florida and such a nice change of pace from the large, impersonal resorts. The beach bar had better food than a lot of the beach restaurants. Really enjoyed our stay there. We were there with most of my family, all 120 of us. Took up like 26 rooms. It's a nice property with a good selection of rooms, literally right on the beach. Cabanas are nice, on site bar and grill is good with really good burgers and a Rum Runner that will sneak up on you and smack you silly. Staff are friendly and attentive, no free breakfast or shampoo but lots of clean towels, decent beds and clean rooms. They actually give you a real key and will charge you if you lose it. Not a bad thing. Charcoal grills around the cabanas for guest use, most rooms are efficiencies and there are some apartments too for big parties. We really did enjoy it and have booked for next year already. read more

I think this is one of the best hotel's to stay at on St.Pete Beach. Although it appears to be one of the older hotels on the beach as large skyscrapers are constructed down the beach adjacent to it, it's not one to overlook. It is older, but they've done a lot of updating and refurbishing in the past few years. Every time my family came from California they would stay here with their 8 children because it was one of the cheapest places on the beach. They have rooms with full kitchens and pull out sofas if needed. They have 2 pools that have been resurfaced recently (a quiet pool and a pool closer to the beach side) and a shuffleboard deck facing the ocean. Alongside the shuffleboard deck there is a tiki bar that's open and I know a lot of people that just head out there for that. The owner's of the hotel are super friendly, and I'd recommend this place to anyone that wasn't interested in dishing out 100s of dollars a night to go to a Hampton Inn or a chain hotel skyscraper on the beach. read more

For years my family trekked from Ohio to St. Pete Beach for spring break. My childhood memories of the Bon-Aire involve days by the pool, beach volleyball, virgin strawberry daiquiris and so much more. Now, 10 years later we've come back. I was worried that I build up my memories and that it was going to be a run down beachside motel. It isn't. They've underdone some interior renovations and the rooms are great, clean, and bright. The pool is just as I remember it, great for swimming or laying with a drink. The beach is clean and not 20 feet from the bar and pool. The bar, oh the bar. A couple pro tips: tables by the pool go quickly so claim them at or before the pool opens at 10. Wear shoes at the shuffleboard court, it isn't a rule, but you'll be glad you did. I am a native Floridian who has always lived near the Gulf of Mexico. I grew up spending time at the beach and enjoying the hospitality of small businesses, quite often family owned-and-run who cater to people looking for fun in the sun. The Bon-Aire Resort is a wonderful reminder of those establishments that contributed to my happy memories. Full of charm and character, our staycation to celebrate my 50th birthday was just about perfect. And if the weather had cooperated -- monsoon level storms in the evening took away the sunsets - it would have been perfect. Everything one could want or need for a low-key, relaxing, quality beach vacay was right there at your fingertips -- the sand and surf steps away from the hotel; two heated pools with plenty of lounge chairs for reading and sunning; a beach bar with cold beer, great burgers and really good potato salad; shuffleboard courts, volleyball nets and beachside pavilions which during our stay served as the locations for everything from late night chat sessions to a wedding. Our room/suite had a kitchenette, living room and bedroom -- great size, great updates and super clean. And the staff was outstanding -- from the friendly, welcoming front desk clerk to the gent who came and switched out the beeping battery in our smoke detector. All first-rate. This is not a high-tech, slick, bells-and-whistles filled place -- and that's a great thing. Our fellow patrons were all just as enamored with the Bon-Aire as we were. Our afternoon was spent hanging out in the pool and chatting with people from across the country, some of whom had just discovered this place and others who had been regular patrons for literally decades. When I was checking out, the staff called several people in the lobby by name. So impressive. I'm rather ashamed to say that this was my first experience at the Bon-Aire, having lived in St Petersburg my entire life. But I'm excited to say that it certainly will not be my last. read more

Best hotel on the beach. My wife's family has been coming here for 40+ years and we won't go anywhere else. This is my 4th visit in 6 years and I love the small feel. The 70s vibe reverberates throughout the entire establishment and is so welcoming. If you love poolside retreats and beachfront bars the Bon Aire Resort is for you. There is a great bar and restaurant called Sand Bar Bills with the best Cheeseburgers in the world. The staff of the hotel is amazing and kind and family owned since 1953. If you want the best place to stay for your St. Pete visit this is the place to be. read more

We stayed here for a week on vacation and I would absolutely 100% stay here again! The rooms are updated and clean! It is right on the beach, which you can't beat. Sandbar Bills is an outdoor bar right by the pool and the beach, super convenient! Family friendly, but also nice if you and your significant other want to get away. The room service was amazing, even laid a towel down right on the inside of the door so you wouldn't track sand all over your room. I don't think I would stay anywhere else when coming down to St. Pete Beach! Walgreens right across the street, right on Gulf Blvd so not far from the touristy life. All in all- awesome location, awesome staff, awesome bar, awesome rooms! read more

We wanted a quick 2 day vacation and called around and got a 2 night king room. We had really no expectations and were surprised. It is an old-style motel so don't expect a pristine setting. It was clean and well maintained but has minor worn spots. You really are right on the beach . Everyone was very pleasant and efficient the only real downside is the total lack of parking. But we realize this is a problem all along Gulf drive,however, it is very acute here. While listening to others that were there you can tell this is a real generational motel with people coming for many different years. read more

My family stayed here for 4 nights and it was a decent hotel on the gulf. The room overlooked two of the pools which was a great advantage for a handicap tenant who was unable to climb the stairs without an elevator. The main pool is located next to a shuffle board court and the tiki bar. The pool has 4 tables with umbrellas and numerous lounge chairs, which overlook the beach. The room we stayed in had tile floors which I enjoyed. Less germs and easy to clean for walking through with wet bathing suits-- some of the rooms have carpet which were being cleaned during our stay. The room was semi updated with 2 beds, a small fridge and closet that housed hangers, beach towels and extra linens. The three drawer dresser was turned sideways in the corner of the room and inaccessible due to being crammed between the wall and a bed. This seemed like a waste, but our suitcase fit on top nicely. There is a wall air condition unit which kept the room nice and cool. The bathroom is tiny, but updated. There is no way for a tall person to sit on the toilet with the door closed and there isn't a toilet paper holder, so it's likely your TP will get wet sitting on the sink. The office staff was superb!!!!! We had extra family members come to visit during the stay and it wasn't an issue to clear parking with the office each day and stay on the premises for a few hours. We appreciated their kindness and generosity for having a few extra cars. There is a Walgreen drug store literally across the street for any last minute forgotten items and a Gigi's Italian restaurant next to that. It made for a great quick meal without spending a ton of money at the hotel tiki bar.
