I've made a purchase and wanted to say I'm not at all happy with the service. I bought a small 40$ harmonica. I asked the gentleman if it was definitely a C major harmonica, which he assuredly confirmed. Went home and immediately noticed one of the scales was incomplete, therefore making it unusable for me. The F note was missing for one of the 2 scales. That was by design, of course, but what was not - was the gentleman not letting me know before the purchase that it was not a full C major scale. I didn't see the accompanying flyer either, because I bought a new one, not the one I saw on the counter. Going back the next day he was unfriendly, and refused to offer a refund, because "i had already blown into the harmonica". That to me is just an excuse to refuse the refund, because modern day sanitization. would have easily solved that. It's not the price tag that bothers me, but having been deceived and having received poor customer service does. Wrote them an email, but never heard back. Avoid this shop unless you really need their services. read more

Do not be fooled by the size of Bonerattle, the selection of guitars, drums and other rad instruments in all price points is a thing to behold. Ideas brim in my head about my want of learning to play the drums and I queried the gentleman working the store about lessons and guitars and all sorts of things that I could. For the record, guitar lessons here are from professionally world renowned musicians Stephen Nikleva and Jimmy Roy, who have both worked with international artists and each has a very unique and amazing guitar style. Bonerattle is the sort of independent music store that a musician really wants to live near. They have the usual assortment of picks, sticks, and amps new and used, but you won't find a single fender or gibson on the wall. Instead, unique guitars like the Danelectro, one of my favorites, and dobro's hang like decor. What else... xylophones, autoharps, electronic cellos, trumpets, harmonicas, tiny pocket amps, individual guitar strings, timpani drums... a rotating assortment of instruments for that prog folk band trying to find their sound. And staff who know how to play them. And don't mind if you do. They also do cheap, effective, and fast repairs of all sorts, like when they fished my input jack out of my semi hollowbody guitar. I don't remember what it came to, but I remember not wanting to cry over the bill. Seriously, this store is one of the only reasons I'm jealous of the residents on Commercial. read more

Great staff and when I had to get some stripped screws out of my Peavey Bass pickups the price for the job was very reasonable. If I had more money, I'd clear out their percussion instruments. As it is I collect what I can when I drop in most sunday afternoons post brunch. read more

Great service & tech skills at this local fave. I've had my tube amp repaired here, got good advice buying a ukulele for my nephew ("it looks like auntie's guitar!"), and recently brought my electric guitar in for a repair, only to have the owner diagnose and fix it in about 2 minutes. Gratis! Bonerattle is a welcome respite from patronizing knowitalls I've encountered at the big shops. Best Guitar store in town! read more

There's nothing like walking into an independent instrument store with chain stores taking over. The selection isn't as big as Long and Mcquade or Tom Lee, but it is what it is. If you're into ukuleles, they've got a few of those too. If anyone has known this store long enough, could you tell me if it used to be on Squamish? I remembered seeing it there years ago and I was wondering if maybe they moved to Vancouver at some time. The selection of books and print music is also somewhat limited, but that's expected from a shop like this. As already mentioned, the staff don't mind if you try any of the instruments at all. Unlike at some chain stores where "they're hanging so high up for a reason!" If you're having any problems with an instrument, talk to Graham, the technician. He's very experienced and knowledgeable. read more

I've walked in a few times. It is a small store, however, it is well stocked and organized. I favor this than some of the more institutionalized sterile looking stores downtown (you know who you are). Customer service has always been awesome, prices are decent and the people working there are either musicians or have awesome general people skills and understand the art of music. read more

This is a small but well-stocked store with a focus on guitars. You won't find any Gibsons, Fenders or PRS' here. Instead, they offer models from companies such as Seagull, Cort, Jay Turser and Danelectro. My impression is that their inventory is aimed at those who want a good quality but *affordable* instrument. I also spotted some quaint, oil-can guitars that were very eye-catching. They are well-stocked with the usual plethora of guitar accessories such as effects pedals, strings, picks, straps, etc, etc, etc. The staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and a luthier is on duty to perform repairs, mods, etc on your guitar. Staff seem very knowledgeable about their stock. Ukulele section smaller than previous years due to poor currency exchange making US orders financially harder to stock. Great place for a starter acoustic instrument and tuning if needed. Exactly the kind of music shop you'd expect on chill and relaxed Commercial Drive. read more

I started going to this store as an alternative to the long commute it takes to get to Tom Lee. Though it has lesser selection than Tom Lee or Long & Mcquade, what you will find there is an interesting selection of quality goods, and even some locally made instruments. I have found some difficulty finding certain parts I need while building guitars, but the whole customer service factor makes shopping there easier in general. On occasion, I've been happy to find that the shopkeepers will carry second-hand, vintage hardware, which is always a plus. The usual lineup of shopkeepers are honest; they won't offload you on crap that you don't need, they are helpful, the store is very rarely crowded, or full of lineups. If you're in the area, and are in need of hardware, effects, or a new instrument, be sure to check this store out. read more

We recently moved to the neighbourhood and like to support the local businesses. Had great success picking up small instruments from the store and found the people really nice and helpful, so when my boyfriend wanted to get a factory defective fret fixed and new strings for my acoustic guitar, we didn't hesitate to take it there. Unfortunately, we were quoted $10 for the fix, but when my boyfriend picked it up the person working (not the same person who quoted $10) asked for $40 cash, gave no receipt. Not impressed, but not a huge concern. However, when I picked it up to play it the day it was picked up, I noticed that it had either been dropped or somehow damaged and had been glued back together. The staff member working never even mentioned the fact that he had broken my guitar! Now they want another $30 to fix what they broke. There are scratches and dings now, that weren't there before. Before taking the guitar to Bonerattle it was literally played about 10 times and was in near mint condition (except for the easy fix factory defect). Now it's broken and nowhere near new condition. I will never go to this store again and will be telling all of my friends and neighbours how dishonest they are. Seriously, who breaks a guitar, fixes it (poorly) and doesn't even tell you that they did it? I guess they were just hoping that we wouldn't notice...? We have many instruments that we play all of the time and would have been happy to support the local business, unfortunately we'll have to travel across town to the more trust-worthy Rufus Guitars. Bonerattle - SERIOUSLY disappointed in your service. I wouldn't recommend this store to anyone, unless you want to have your instruments broken and then be charged to have them fixed. I also think it's pretty shadey to ask for cash and give no receipt. read more

I brought my Larivee here for a major tune up (first one in 20 years!); bridge lifting off,pick up not working. I could not be happier....all problems fixed, (even ones I wasn't aware of, but were there), and my guitar hasn't sounded this good since I bought it. Amazing! Dude is awesome! I was prepared to drop a little cash on my new hobby. I decided to try banjo as I already play guitar. Looking at the banjo's and chatting with him a bit he told me to go for the cheaper option even though I told him I did not mind paying for quality. The one he sold me is of gold quality and came with a case. He told me it was the best bang for the buck and that it did not really make sense to spend 2 to 3 hundred when he this particular model that was equally good for a hundred bucks. One year later, still sounds good, stays in tune, I still s^$k at it. But bone rattle is awesome read more
