    Uptown Parade

Sitting in one of the wine bars here, you kind of forget time. You forget place. You forget that you had too much to drink and you need to find your way home. Uptown Parade has loads of international food outlets, and some nice retail stores too. The vibe is energetic, and the streets are lively with people. You also have a choice of places...High Street, Forbestown, Market Market, Bonifacio Circle..... I highly recommend this place given the location and abundance of choices.

I live in BGC and I just moved from Singapore. We moved here because it's the closest thing to Singapore that you can get in Manila. This is in terms of cleanliness, safety, and green spaces. There is actually city planning done in BGC, which is great. There are loads of shops, cinemas, offices, residences, embassies, schools, and malls which are all walking distance. The traffic in the area is also better than in most parts of Manila. The streets are well lit at all times of day and there are marshals at almost every street corner. There are no spaghetti wires in sight, making it one of the most aesthetically pleasing places in the city. Now, there are loads of new developments in the area. So fingers crossed that in 5 or 10 years, this little oasis won't be as congested as other parts of the city.

After some research, I came across the fact that BGC actually used to be pretty empty. In just the span of around a decade, BGC turned into the biggest and prettiest lifestyle center in the whole country. That kind of just blows my mind. BGC's hot. Like, if you try taking a walk, you're probably not gonna see a single ugly patch of land unless you count the ones under construction. Even the trash cans have cute anime designs on them which sort of makes you feel compelled to throw away your trash. BGC is on its way to having everything. Every single business and every single retailer and every single company is putting up stuff here. You can have a job (in pretty much every industry out there), a condo, and a hundred shopping centers all in the same, fairly easy to navigate area that's really clean. It's just such a beautiful place, and I fully expect it to become the center for lifestyle in the next few years.

In my most recent run, I put on the anime OST playlist of Spotify and went off like I was being chased by a mecha around some stylized metropolis. BGC is literally my playground. Technically, it's a township / community (a small city within a relatively small city and in it, life is complete. There is so much to be happy about the urban planning of the place, but the thing I love about it the most is how it is conducive for some night running. In fact, this is where I'd covered my furthest distances. Unlike the other places I run in, this track does not condemn me to a perpetual loop. It is "exploratory," as my friend said. I am free to roam, take turns and change my path every session. So many interesting things to see, people to observe and details to entertain you as you workout. It greatly helped that the place was orderly that I very much could have been in any other (more progressive) Asian city. The pavement here is concrete and I do know it will eventually take a toll on my knees. And since I run in the sidewalks and generally on the gutter and the sides of the road, there is etiquette to be observed and pedestrian rules to uphold. (Which I do follow.) To their credit, they've built parks with tracks designed for running, namely Track 30th and Terra 28th and I usually kick start my session in the former and from there, just run freely around the compound, going around High Street, unto the Fort Strip, even reaching as far as the Burgos Circle / Mind Museum area and Turf. Rather than a fitness regimen, these are the times I understand how running is actually a lifestyle.

Stoplight during Valentine's! Didn't know they could do that haha

As much as I love classy, trendy Makati, I gotta say BGC is definitely giving it a run for its money. A lot of office buildings have popped up here in the past three or four years, and to cater to the new professionals in the area, so have a lot of great restaurants, bars, and shops. Everything here is high end and beautiful, but not intimidatingly so. In fact, it's a popular weekend spot for more well-off families because of the abundance of green spaces to play in and the ever-welcoming Mind Museum. Lots of art/music/food festivals are being held here, and when there are no events coming up, it's still a great place to food trip or go on a walking tour to see the various sculptures scattered around the streets. I'd compare BGC to the best of the world's cities, such as Singapore and Melbourne. This is what all of Metro Manila should look like.

Before moving to Orlando Suites, we lived in a small apartment near Hotel Benilde. I'd like to be very straightforward and tell you that we got robbed there. Thieves actually broke into our apartment and stole some of our stuff. I don't mean to scare anyone, Taft Avenue is still a pretty good place to stay in. There's still nothing wrong with being a little careful though. After the incident, my parents thought we should live in an apartment building with good security. This is why we are now staying in Orlando Suites. The place is a nice, 10-storey building with 8 residential floors, a pool and a function room on the third floor, a gym, tennis and badminton court, a pool table and a rooftop garden on the tenth floor. Pretty nice, huh? They also have bi-monthly pest control programs to ensure pest-free living. And if you're too lazy to clean your own unit, the maintenance team can do it for you for 250 pesos each. Lastly, the security team is amazing! There are at least 7-10 security guards in the building to protect you and would sometimes also help you with your bags and groceries, or getting a cab. So for those looking for a place in Taft, try Orlando Suites. I'll see you there!

It was a box, basically, and while you're sitting on the toilet, you can rest your forehead on the wall you're facing without undue stretching. It was that tiny. So when my sisters moved in with me to attend college in DLSU, I was thrilled. That meant a bigger apartment! My parents ended up choosing an apartment in Orlando Suites. Not only was it in a very central location, it was also only 10-stories high. My dad had a thing about tall buildings, which was a sound fear, since in a building this low, I won't die if the elevator was undergoing maintenance or something. It was also very secure, and after three years of living here, we were chummy with all the security guards. We even get invited to their Christmas parties. Aside from their roomy and airy apartments, they also offer dormitory-style residences for those who like to live with other people. It's sad that we may have to move soon -- this has been home for so long.

** HORRIBLE experience with Aqua Blue'ver NOT Aquabest **…read more Read my Yelp Review on Aqua Blue'ver to see why you should avoid using their service for purified water delivery. Affiliated numbers 0916-2501600 and 0921-5854425 and 02-835-5967. Based on an old FB post of someone's business cards, Aqua Blue'ver is located in South Cembo, Makati City. That post is where I got the other two numbers for the company. Prior to me adding them on Yelp and Google, they didn't have an online presence. Weird for a company who supposedly opened in 2002. Why the mix up? Thought I misheard Aqua Blue'ver manager when she said, "Aqua blue," especially since Aqua Blue'ver was unlisted on Google, Yelp, and Facebook and didn't have a company website. So, I thought she must have said Aquabest and left my one-star review for Aqua Blue'ver here. I'm back to correct my error. Luckily, Aquabest is other purified water delivery option at One Uptown Residences. Glad to give Aquabest a chance after repeated failed deliveries by Aqua Blue'ver. Giving them 4-stars as we start using their service. Updated: March 20, 2020

But have you ever seen how they have been handled by the water delivery guys? The risk of contamination in your drinking water is high during delivery. That's why I personally go to the water refilling station, bringing my 5-gallon water bottles for refill or having them exchanged for freshly filled up containers whenever there are stocks. For more than two years now, I buy my water from Aquabest in Finlandia. It's very near Batangas Street. Doing so, I've seen how they operate and I can say only one thing, they are clean. Since I started buying from this refilling station, I never had problems like weird tasting water or even diarrhea. I'm impressed that the water containers they use for other customers look new or just slightly used. This matters a lot to me because I don't want a banged up, dirty container sitting upside down on my water dispenser. This Aquabest is open from 8:00am until 7:00pm. If you want, they also deliver to homes and offices within Makati City.
