    Raisin brioche ($2.40)

Man, sometimes I miss Montreal and all their delicious boulangeries. Seems like there's one around every corner. Why's it so hard to find a good baguette in Edmonton? Je ne sais pas, mes amies. Well, I've been to Boulangerie Bonjour a couple times now and have to say it's impressed me. If you're looking for artisanal French breads, this is the spot in town. As with most bakeries in town, hours coincide with work hours but don't fret, they're open Saturdays! Be prepared for a line as I went once and it was busy. First trip, I stepped into the bakery around 4pm on a Wednesday afternoon and not surprisingly, their selection of bread was sparse. While I waited my turn, I browsed around and spotted some local vegetables (on sale), jams, and honey for sale. They also carry a variety of cheese from Quebec and Europe. Perfect for the cheese connoisseur. I spotted a couple other baked goodies that looked good. Next time. - Baguette ($3.50) the baguette had that crispy crunch on the outside and pillowy, chewy inside. I cut it into tiny slices, drizzled some olive oil on top and popped it into the oven for a few minutes. Amazing! Might be one of the best baguettes you can get in town. Great mouth feel. - Pain aux raisin ($5.50) - the pain aux raisin was fantastic. Rustic, delicious, this ain't your typical raisin bread. - Pain pailasson ($6.95) - I don't think I've ever had a pain pailasson before but this translate roughly to doormat. I guess that sort of makes sense if you look at it - it somewhats resembles that. This one was the priciest of all the loafs I bought. - Croissant butter ($2.75) - obviously, you have to try a croissant if you're going to a French bakery. Flaky, buttery, the croissant tears apart easily with your fingertips. Stop buying croissants at grocery stores and get them here if you care about things like taste, quality and real ingredients. - Raisin brioche ($2.40) - I wasn't expecting much as it just looks like a typical bun but looks can be deceiving. - Cranberry bread ($6.95) - I'm a sucker for anything with cranberry in it. I'm not sure if they make this every day but grab a loaf if you happen to get lucky like I did. So good! Another shot. Sometimes pictures just speak louder than words. - Sun dried tomato with kalamato olives ($5.95) - last loaf was the sun dried tomato with kalamato olives. You could really taste the freshness of the olives and the tomatoes gave the bread a slight tang. Another loaf I'd get again. Next time, I'm inquiring about their frozen pizza dough (YUM) - hopefully they still make it. Don't forget that it's cash or debit only. All I can say is, ALLEZ!

My only complaint is that Yelp won't let me give them more than five stars. Truly a great bakery.

It is on the pricier side, however you don't need to prep or clean up afterwards and we leave stuffed. You can also order more veggies and fruit for no extra charge. It was busy this evening but our server did a decent job checking in on us and refilling our pops and waters. Food was great. I like how you can have a variety of choices for cheese, chocolate and broth. We went with the coq au vin broth and the mojo broth. We enjoyed the 4 cheeses (which is their best one in my opinion) and the truffle. For dessert we tried the bananas foster and the cookies and cream chocolate dream. Everything was excellent. It is lovely inside but it was really loud because it was so full. Good for a special occassion.

To me, the quality of the experience is dependant on the service, and it was good. At least 3 different people provided service to our table for various purposes. Fonduing is fun, and requires collaboration. The vegetables, meats, fruit and dessert for dipping were fine. Lots of beverages to choose from and a decent wine selection.

Dutch Delicious, if you can't tell by the name, is a Dutch bakery (with some European and German…read moreinfluence) that dabbles in a bit of everything: fresh bread, deli meats, cheeses, pastries, coffee and imported products. I've actually been into their shop once before but having just ate lunch, ended up just browsing. Well, I was surprised but happy to accept an invitation from DD for a peek inside their shop and bakery where all the magic happens. I met Siebe, owner of Dutch Delicious along with one of his bakers, Elien. Both are very friendly, humble, down to earth individuals that have a huge passion and joy for baking. One thing that Siebe kept on stressing was the fact that they use real butter, whipped cream and butter cream. You know a place means business when they use quality ingredients. Best quote of the night goes to Elien - "bad for the hips, good for the lips." One really cool thing I learned was baking cultures. There was a white one (containing 10% rye). Dutch add them into their breads to give it a more complex, nuanced flavour. The other one was rye and had been cultivating for about 8 months. It smelled absolutely amazing. I'd buy a bottle... We moved outside to the main counter where you can see some of their bread offerings. It was end of the day so only a few loafs remained. We sampled: - 5 grain bread. Light, airy, this is bread that you're normally acquainted with/used to. - Dark rye was a completely different beast. Much "heavier" and you really have to chew it. Goes well with cheese. Another great quote - "there's nothing like a good aged cheese with artisanal bread". Preach, sister, preach. - This one was my favourite: I believe it was the Canadian raisin bread. GET IT. Moving on to the pastries, there is a lot of options to choose from. They also have cakes if you're looking to satisfy that sweet tooth. What I took home from talking with Sieb - everything is made fresh, in-house with real ingredients. No shortcuts are taken. They make sure things are done the "right way" which results in everything being quite labour intensive. The saying's true - hand made always tastes better. Non-pastry related but I also got to sample (last one I swear) one of their sausage rolls. Nice and flaky, again, you can taste the butter. The meat even had a nice je ne sais quo that I couldn't quite pinpoint until Siebe told me the secret ingredient. Yum. At this point, the tour was wrapping up but I was gifted a nice little to go package of goodies. Such a kind gesture. I had soccer practice to attend but checked afterwards to see what was in the box. - Ouwe Jongens cheese. I'm by no means a cheese connoisseur but this is a old style, strong flavoured hard cheese. This will likely last me awhile. - Raisin bread. Bring me back to my childhood, except I wish I was eating Dutch's version instead of Sun-Maid's crappy raisin bread. - The rye bread comes whole. Make sure you have a hefty bread knife to cut this bad boy. Otherwise, you'll be getting a good arm workout. Where to start? If you like pastries, you'll be in heaven. What I liked best was how everything tasted fresh and creamy without being too rich/sweet. I felt like I could eat another pastry right after devouring the first one. - Cream pastry ($2.89) - the cream pastry was delightful. Light and airy, the filling was just divine. Don't make me choose but I think this was my favourite. - Apple slice ($2.69) - another winner was the apple slice. Reminded me of a turnover but sooo much smoother. The addition of raisins gave it the perfect balance of sweetness. - Vanilla slice ($2.69) - vanilla slice, my mom thought this was like a mille feuille. Incredibly light, creamy, this is one of their most popular for a reason. - Mocha cake square ($2.49) and marzipan cake square ($2.49) - seriously, sooooo goood. I preferred the mocha over the marizpan square. Can't wait to go back and try a slew of new things next time. Thanks again Dutch Delicious and crew for the treats, hospitality and insight!
