Siebe Koopman.. the proud owner of Dutch Delicious.
    Bert J.

Even though I personally know the owner, Siebe Koopman, for many years, I am reviewing his store without bias. First and foremost, Dutch Delicious Bakery is the closest thing to being in Europe. When you first walk into the store, you get that feeling of being in Holland. At times I feel like a kid in a candy store with a dollar and just run around trying to figure out what I want ( everything ! ). Dutch groceries, deli meats, cheese, and best of all.. fresh pastries, cakes and breads. You can not get any fresher than this ! Every night Siebe ( owner ) and a baker are there making everything from scratch ! One of the additions he added was a Koffie Korner. A freshly made cup of coffee, add a pastry with it and only one thing comes to mind... heaven! There are treats as well .. a true Dutchman knows how much we love those " dropjes" ( drop-yus ). And thankfully this store has them. One of the things I really love is the sausage rolls. I simply loved eating them whenever I visited Holland so it is really nice to get the same thing here.. as Siebe knows well enough how much I love them. If you ever get a chance to visit the store.. I strongly suggest a few things that you have to buy : A fresh loaf of bread. A package of Honig Vegetable soup . Some pastries - made with REAL cream. Trust me .. you will be back !

Right close to Dang good so we dipped in to take home some slick treats! The store front is epic! Great things on the shelf's that I most certainly do not get commonly around here. Exactly what you would want to see on the floor space. It did not take long to get an idea of what we wanted to take home. Lots of great baked goods up by the front counter to make you hungry. The staff was great as well. Very nice and friendly. It's easy to tell that they are the type of people who really enjoy doing this kind of service. Makes for an easy shopping experience. As for the desserts we took home. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it at all. Very sweet and tasty. The one cake we took is all chocolate but has mandarine oranges in it. So damn good! If I was really medicated up, shopping here would be a bad idea I would blow an entire pay period on food! Love it, love the people. Worth a stop in for sure! Stay medicated

The Pastry is absolutely amazing. The staff is extremely friendly as well. I would recommend this bakery anytime.

Damn! They put soy in the chocolate from Holland too! This store is a piece of Holland right here in Edmonton. It's like a little Dutch grocery store complete with cheese and meat. I couldn't believe how many imported food items there were. They also had an entire rack of actual pairs of wooden shoes! They even had little keychains with wooden shoes. On the wall were some old black and white photos of windmills. Aside from the assorted baked goods and such, there was a young Dutch guy working there that made for nice eye candy.

One of my favourite bakeries in town! The staff here are always so friendly and patient, with lots of suggestions for the undecided. Today is King's Day, a Dutch holiday, so we were given small pieces of delicious cake and warm mini sausage rolls to celebrate (both were fabulous). The baked goods here are amazing. Love that you can taste the quality in the ingredients - real cream, real butter, real good! Prices are incredibly reasonable, staff are super friendly, and the treats are delicious. What more could you ask for?

I am really kicking myself for not finding this gem sooner! I lived in the neighbourhood for several years and never poked my head in. These folks have a lot of the traditional Dutch staples for sale in their little shop - including the wooden clogs! If you like the salty Dutch licorice, they have quite the selection. It reminds me a lot of K&K Foodliner, but Dutch instead of German. It is a bakery AND a deli so they have frozen meals available on the far west wall if you would like to try some Dutch food. I visited in late afternoon on a weekend so there wasn't much for ready-made available to buy in the deli. Dutch Delicious smells AMAZING when you walk in. My mouth immediately started to water. Even in the afternoon, they still had a great selection of pastries to offer. I went in looking for cinnamon buns, which they were out of but they had other tasty things as well. I chose the chocolate raspberry cake slice and a cinnamon pinwheel. The chocolate raspberry cake was really good. The raspberry was in the butter-creme, and I suspect real raspberries are used. I am not a fan of things that are sickly sweet. This cake was just right, not too dense. The cinnamon pinwheels are a messy affair to eat. You may want to actually use the bag they come in to catch all the crumbs. These are nice and cinnamon-y and the sugar coating is baked on so you don't get that everywhere too. So shame on me for not stopping in while I lived in the neighbourhood! I will certainly be back for more goodies and to try out some of the traditional Dutch foods offered by the deli.

Good coffee n good pastries here!

Altho they have a very limited seating, but it's a good place to have your afternoon coffee and/tea that goes soooo well with their homemade pastries and breads and cakes!!! Feel like home!! They have Dutch products/groceries from coffees, candies, shampoo etc

Amazing shop and bakery! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

The store is often busy with a line out the door, especially on Friday and Saturday after 9 a.m. Here's a few tips to be a better patron and have a better experience: Breads can be ordered online for quick in-store pickup. Some items are made daily, some on certain days only, it's all listed online. They will slice your bread in the store for you if you like. Come as close to opening as possible for best selection, especially on one-off days, e.g. - bagels made only on Wednesdays sell out quickly. They also have a lovely European and Canadian cheese selection! Consider browsing their current cheeses online, as there are many beautiful cheeses but no space to really ogle at them in the store. Come in prepared to avoid hovering for too long in the small customer space. There are a couple other regular non-bread items, like honey, traditional dijon, coffee beans, rillettes/terrine, French butter and recently a small selection of deli meat. One could almost make a mixed charcuterie plate after a quick visit here. Parking behind the business is tight but doable. Street parking is available within quick walking distance in the adjacent neighbourhood. Only d-bags park right out front on 99 Ave, thus blocking an entire lane of traffic. I've noticed it's usually mid-age women in expensive SUVs. Goes with the hood I guess. Eat high-quality bread and be happy!

Also, it gives highlight to an delicious food scene, which otherwise can be overlooked because of the area of town that Chinatown is located in. I really believe in the area, and even if it is not Chinatown Dining Week, I still go there often because the food is amazing (at numerous places on 96th street), and the families who have food establishments are really friendly, and care about they do. The staff here are friendly and care about what they do, (as all of the other locations on the street), but english is not their first language, so be patient! The women here running the bakery were fantastic, but we needed to do some charades to get what we wanted. Our fruit cocktail cake was only 20 bucks (for downtown dining week, it is slightly higher regularly), which is cheaper than many Costco cakes. It was so delicious. Light and fluffy, full of fruit and delectable whipped cream. I am not a super sweet fan, but I had three pieces of cake the first night. So lovely. They also have a tonne of other baked goods that are worth checking out. You should. Check out Chinatown. Check out the food. And check out the people that are in this resilient community.

I don't think I have had something here that I didn't think was ok to good. My issue the last time was that they add the prices in their head and didn't issue a receipt. They usually use a calculator but I don't recall if they ever give a receipt from the til. This time they didn't use and charged almost $30 for baked goods, which I think was a few dollars off. My suggestion is if you go, add up the items beforehand or ask for a receipt to ensure the price charged is what it should be.

I didn't quite know what to expect walking in, if it was more of a takeout bakery style or a sit down and enjoy sandwich and chicken eatery? Well, we got to try it out and 100% more of a take out shop than anything else. Similar setup to Handy with breads and desserts displayed on the center glass counter display with a few shelves on the side acting as a mini market, the backboard had a few food food items but nothing special. The space is roomier with plenty of seating, but with a feeling of more of a concrete room as opposed to being more welcoming as Handy. We left with a few Portuguese tarts and they were cold? She didn't offer to warm them up or anything either, so my cold tarts were pretty disappointing. Though the filling did taste really good. Maybe we need to visit again on a busier peak time for some better service? Not in a rush to try this place again though.

Popular Bakery is many things - including living up to its name. It is a bakery, grocery store,…read moresandwich shop, cafe, and hang out, all in one. Located on Alberta Avenue, Popular Bakery fits well into the multicultural atmosphere of the area as a Portuguese bakery and restaurant. One of the few places where one can sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy conversation with friends (except when community coffeehouse The Carrot is open), Portuguese Bakery sells fresh baked goods, sandwiches made to order, and a few hot entree items such as Portuguese flame-grilled chicken and pork. A cooler contains a variety of beverages, both domestic and imported from Portugal, and there are a few short aisles of groceries, again, mostly Portuguese. Despite being large and spacious, tables are precious few. I can imagine this place getting very full at lunch time, and doing a mostly take-out business. I was there around four in the afternoon, and the tables were around half full, mostly with older Portuguese men and women sitting around enjoying coffee and pastries, speaking in their mother tongue. My server was Portuguese, and I really felt like I had stepped into another culture - which is exactly what I want when I am visiting an ethnic establishment. I ordered a quarter chicken meal with french fries (my other choice was rice) and a salad (which comes with the meal). I was asked if I wanted my food served regular or spicy and I opted for regular. My food was brought out to me a few minutes later, and consisted of a large plate almost overflowing with chicken, fries, and salad. The salad was a mix of vegetables in a light, almost Italian style vinagrette with a bit of a salty kick to it. The fries were average, but crispy. I thought perhaps they might make their own here, but I was wrong. The chicken, however, was the star of the show. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, the meat was infused with a tangy season mix in oil, accented with salt and garlic. The grilled flavour of the chicken came through as well. Instead of giving me an entire dark or white quarter, I had a wing, a chunk of thigh, and two chunks of white meat. I enjoyed the variety, and it also made the meal easier to eat. For dessert, I decided to try one of the many tempting treats in the bakery's showcase. An egg tart is a standard Portuguese favourite of mine and they were here, but looked rather burned. Some of the other items, such as danishes, eclairs, and other pastries looked delicious, but a bit too much to follow the meal I had. I opted for what looked like a smaller dessert - a slice of caramel pudding. As soon as my server handed me the plate, I thought my arm would drop. It was heavy for such a small slice! I also had a cup of coffee to accompany my dessert and keep me occupied as I finished reading a book. The pudding reminded me of the filling of an egg tart, very firm in texture. The caramel part was probably the light syrup at the bottom of the slice, which tasted more like a lightly burned sugar than caramel. It was good, though, and it took me a while to fork my way through it. The big disappointment of the afternoon was the coffee. It was very, very average. However, it was also inexpensive. The price for a meal is in the $7-$10 range. The sandwiches are on fresh bread or rolls and include a variety of meats. There is also soup. I plan to come here again to have more chicken and try the rice. Portuguese Bakery closes daily at 6:00 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
