Dutch Delicious, if you can't tell by the name, is a Dutch bakery (with some European and German influence) that dabbles in a bit of everything: fresh bread, deli meats, cheeses, pastries, coffee and imported products. I've actually been into their shop once before but having just ate lunch, ended up just browsing. Well, I was surprised but happy to accept an invitation from DD for a peek inside their shop and bakery where all the magic happens. I met Siebe, owner of Dutch Delicious along with one of his bakers, Elien. Both are very friendly, humble, down to earth individuals that have a huge passion and joy for baking. One thing that Siebe kept on stressing was the fact that they use real butter, whipped cream and butter cream. You know a place means business when they use quality ingredients. Best quote of the night goes to Elien - "bad for the hips, good for the lips." One really cool thing I learned was baking cultures. There was a white one (containing 10% rye). Dutch add them into their breads to give it a more complex, nuanced flavour. The other one was rye and had been cultivating for about 8 months. It smelled absolutely amazing. I'd buy a bottle... We moved outside to the main counter where you can see some of their bread offerings. It was end of the day so only a few loafs remained. We sampled: - 5 grain bread. Light, airy, this is bread that you're normally acquainted with/used to. - Dark rye was a completely different beast. Much "heavier" and you really have to chew it. Goes well with cheese. Another great quote - "there's nothing like a good aged cheese with artisanal bread". Preach, sister, preach. - This one was my favourite: I believe it was the Canadian raisin bread. GET IT. Moving on to the pastries, there is a lot of options to choose from. They also have cakes if you're looking to satisfy that sweet tooth. What I took home from talking with Sieb - everything is made fresh, in-house with real ingredients. No shortcuts are taken. They make sure things are done the "right way" which results in everything being quite labour intensive. The saying's true - hand made always tastes better. Non-pastry related but I also got to sample (last one I swear) one of their sausage rolls. Nice and flaky, again, you can taste the butter. The meat even had a nice je ne sais quo that I couldn't quite pinpoint until Siebe told me the secret ingredient. Yum. At this point, the tour was wrapping up but I was gifted a nice little to go package of goodies. Such a kind gesture. I had soccer practice to attend but checked afterwards to see what was in the box. - Ouwe Jongens cheese. I'm by no means a cheese connoisseur but this is a old style, strong flavoured hard cheese. This will likely last me awhile. - Raisin bread. Bring me back to my childhood, except I wish I was eating Dutch's version instead of Sun-Maid's crappy raisin bread. - The rye bread comes whole. Make sure you have a hefty bread knife to cut this bad boy. Otherwise, you'll be getting a good arm workout. Where to start? If you like pastries, you'll be in heaven. What I liked best was how everything tasted fresh and creamy without being too rich/sweet. I felt like I could eat another pastry right after devouring the first one. - Cream pastry ($2.89) - the cream pastry was delightful. Light and airy, the filling was just divine. Don't make me choose but I think this was my favourite. - Apple slice ($2.69) - another winner was the apple slice. Reminded me of a turnover but sooo much smoother. The addition of raisins gave it the perfect balance of sweetness. - Vanilla slice ($2.69) - vanilla slice, my mom thought this was like a mille feuille. Incredibly light, creamy, this is one of their most popular for a reason. - Mocha cake square ($2.49) and marzipan cake square ($2.49) - seriously, sooooo goood. I preferred the mocha over the marizpan square. Can't wait to go back and try a slew of new things next time. Thanks again Dutch Delicious and crew for the treats, hospitality and insight! read more

Even though I personally know the owner, Siebe Koopman, for many years, I am reviewing his store without bias. First and foremost, Dutch Delicious Bakery is the closest thing to being in Europe. When you first walk into the store, you get that feeling of being in Holland. At times I feel like a kid in a candy store with a dollar and just run around trying to figure out what I want ( everything ! ). Dutch groceries, deli meats, cheese, and best of all.. fresh pastries, cakes and breads. You can not get any fresher than this ! Every night Siebe ( owner ) and a baker are there making everything from scratch ! One of the additions he added was a Koffie Korner. A freshly made cup of coffee, add a pastry with it and only one thing comes to mind... heaven! There are treats as well .. a true Dutchman knows how much we love those " dropjes" ( drop-yus ). And thankfully this store has them. One of the things I really love is the sausage rolls. I simply loved eating them whenever I visited Holland so it is really nice to get the same thing here.. as Siebe knows well enough how much I love them. If you ever get a chance to visit the store.. I strongly suggest a few things that you have to buy : A fresh loaf of bread. A package of Honig Vegetable soup . Some pastries - made with REAL cream. Trust me .. you will be back ! read more

Right close to Dang good so we dipped in to take home some slick treats! The store front is epic! Great things on the shelf's that I most certainly do not get commonly around here. Exactly what you would want to see on the floor space. It did not take long to get an idea of what we wanted to take home. Lots of great baked goods up by the front counter to make you hungry. The staff was great as well. Very nice and friendly. It's easy to tell that they are the type of people who really enjoy doing this kind of service. Makes for an easy shopping experience. As for the desserts we took home. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it at all. Very sweet and tasty. The one cake we took is all chocolate but has mandarine oranges in it. So damn good! If I was really medicated up, shopping here would be a bad idea I would blow an entire pay period on food! Love it, love the people. Worth a stop in for sure! Stay medicated read more

Damn! They put soy in the chocolate from Holland too! This store is a piece of Holland right here in Edmonton. It's like a little Dutch grocery store complete with cheese and meat. I couldn't believe how many imported food items there were. They also had an entire rack of actual pairs of wooden shoes! They even had little keychains with wooden shoes. On the wall were some old black and white photos of windmills. Aside from the assorted baked goods and such, there was a young Dutch guy working there that made for nice eye candy. read more

Lots of fun European snack selections and a bakery front. When I stopped by, I wanted to purchase a sandwich - my first selection they didn't have and my second selection they only had part of the ingredients for... It was a bit of a bummer, especially since there was nothing on the menu to indicate that they were sold out. I also purchased some almond rolls and strudel while I was there. The pastry was nice - flaky and light. The filling was a bust for me though. I found them to be too sweet and artificial tasting. I think sweets lovers would enjoy them or they would go nicely with coffee to tone down the sweet. All in all, a nice shop and a good place to stop by if you are in need of a Dutch goods fix. read more

I am really kicking myself for not finding this gem sooner! I lived in the neighbourhood for several years and never poked my head in. These folks have a lot of the traditional Dutch staples for sale in their little shop - including the wooden clogs! If you like the salty Dutch licorice, they have quite the selection. It reminds me a lot of K&K Foodliner, but Dutch instead of German. It is a bakery AND a deli so they have frozen meals available on the far west wall if you would like to try some Dutch food. I visited in late afternoon on a weekend so there wasn't much for ready-made available to buy in the deli. Dutch Delicious smells AMAZING when you walk in. My mouth immediately started to water. Even in the afternoon, they still had a great selection of pastries to offer. I went in looking for cinnamon buns, which they were out of but they had other tasty things as well. I chose the chocolate raspberry cake slice and a cinnamon pinwheel. The chocolate raspberry cake was really good. The raspberry was in the butter-creme, and I suspect real raspberries are used. I am not a fan of things that are sickly sweet. This cake was just right, not too dense. The cinnamon pinwheels are a messy affair to eat. You may want to actually use the bag they come in to catch all the crumbs. These are nice and cinnamon-y and the sugar coating is baked on so you don't get that everywhere too. So shame on me for not stopping in while I lived in the neighbourhood! I will certainly be back for more goodies and to try out some of the traditional Dutch foods offered by the deli. read more

There's nothing better than the smell of walking into a bakery, and Dutch Delicious doesn't disappoint. The bakery offers traditional dutch baking along with standard bakery items. I've ordered buns in advance for family functions and have been pleased with their quality. Part of the store caters to Dutch novelties like wooden shoes, trinkets, candy, snacks and post cards. There are a few tables and chairs available so you can take a load off, have a coffee or beverage and enjoy your goodies. Dutch Delicious is a must stop at bakery. We had the opportunity to pop in on Friday afternoon and were excited to pick up some favourites. If we had more time, we would have grabbed some of the incredible looking baked goods and sat at the little cafe tables to enjoy. But we did pick up a few pastries to take with us, along with some frozen treats, licorice and cookies. Oh and cheese! Gouda! And meat! We love the experience here - the staff were super friendly and, as I love hearing a Dutch accent, made it my happy place. There are also a lot of gifts (slippers that look like klompen!) on site! We know where we'll be stopping in for our treats and gifts! We do wish though that they were open on Sundays but we appreciate that everyone deserves a day off. One of my favourite bakeries in town! The staff here are always so friendly and patient, with lots of suggestions for the undecided. Today is King's Day, a Dutch holiday, so we were given small pieces of delicious cake and warm mini sausage rolls to celebrate (both were fabulous). The baked goods here are amazing. Love that you can taste the quality in the ingredients - real cream, real butter, real good! Prices are incredibly reasonable, staff are super friendly, and the treats are delicious. My family & I stop by here often, and it's always something I look forward to! They have a good selection of Dutch treats (I usually go for the licorice & other candy- I'm an addict- and the honey cake), goods (like soccer jerseys, windmills and wooden clogs), a deli (aged gouda for the win), and a bakery (which makes awesome cakes, fresh bread & buns, rumballs, and cream puffs). They have a cafe there, though I haven't tried the coffee (I'm not a huge coffee drinker), but my family has & they think it's pretty good :) They've also got a bunch of Dutch grocery things, though to be honest I've never looked at them much, probably cos I'm too busy getting all the candy I can carry :P All the stuff here is really good. Also, I have to mention the staff here, cos they're awesome! I've never had a bad customer service experience here. The staff are always pleasant and friendly, and once (without going into details) they noticed my sister and I were having a really, really bad day, and so they went out of their way to be extra nice to us. That really stood out to me- to get good customer service is one thing, but to have staff actually be kind to you cos you're having a horrible day is something you don't see often, so I feel like it deserves a mention. So yeah, if you're looking for a great deli & bakery or want to try some Dutch treats, I'd definitely stop in here. It's a gem! read more

Cinnamon knots are amazing! I live nearby the Dutch Bakery but have to ration my visits. I have yet to have something from here that isn't fresh and delicious! My daughter is in love with the marzipan cakes and the sugar bread! The service runs hot and cold. If you are lucky enough to get the owner, he is always smiling and eager to help out. A couple of the ladies working in the shop used to actually scare me a bit...but over time I have come to realize that it's just the way they are and if you want your baked goods then you need to get over that minor roadblock. read more

Such a gorgeous gem! Staff was very friendly and waited while we procrastinated a decision. Excellent pastry, not too sweet, excellent textures. My boyfriend who is german can be abit of a pastry snob, he even loved it. Hard not to draw comparisons btw this and the duchess bakery down the street. Obviously the decor is much fancier at the duchess, but for the value i would definitely pick this place. I just think its ridiculous to ever pay the duchess prices and wait in line for a limited selection. If you dont care about the appearances the dutch bakery is your place! read more

This place is fantastic. You have to buy the raisin bread, lightly toasted with real butter... heavenly. My grandfather / Opa, used to have a biweekly coffee and pastry excursion here. He would treat us all and we loved creating those fond memories. This place will always be in our hearts due to the warm and friendly staff and the great memories shared there. Always like dropping in here, great bakery. My wife is a huge fan of their Black Forest Cake, she says its the best in Edmonton. We are also big fans of the cherry hazel nut strudel, makes for a fancy breakfast the next day. I find the prices fair or cheap for a good quality bakery. Service is always friendly. This bakery is just a gem in the neighbourhood you walk in the staff are always welcoming, you can purchase very unique items while shopping in the store like Dutch spices, shoes, baking needs and they have a candy wall (which my kiddos love going to) from the candy wall you can then you walk to the cafe where you can have a sandwich made fresh and a delicious cup of koffie, you walk a few steps more you get a lovely selection of meat at the deli with a variety of cheese, sausage, and then you hit the bakery fresh bread, pastries all well priced, made in store (they have a FB page) and their sausage rolls are to die for! They have baking classes and they invite children from schools to learn how to bake, it's just a great business! I have been coming to this bakery since I was young and I am happy to be able to bring my children as it's such a treat walking into Dutch Delicious , you know your getting baking that comes from the heart! read more

This is the second time I've been here. The first time was several years ago when service was poor due to employee attitude and I wasn't wowed. Today I went there specifically looking for European products. I found plenty of what I wanted at the bakery counter. Ordering was very easy, although it gets crowded at the counter area when more than one person is trying to get a look at the products behind the glass. The service was superb today - very friendly and personable. Although I know of many European bakeries in Edmonton, I will definitely keep this one on my list, based on service and product quality. One of my friends introduced me to this amazing Dutch bakery and Deli in June 08. They've been in business now for 2 years, so it's fairly new. I love Dutch milk chocolate and bought some letters for Christmas - they go fast. I had the most delicious moist slice of Black Forest Cake there. The fresh HOMEMADE pastries and desserts are very reasonably priced and tastes so much better than grocery store brand and restaurants for half the price! They have lots of variety of candy and goodies to be had. The staff are friendly, helpful and love their jobs. There's even a couple little tables to sit and endulge and watch the world go by. The customers were friendly too. I have several friends and family that are Dutch and when they come to visit - I'm taking them there! I'm hooked! read more

This place is reminiscent of everything grandma (Oma)! I can buy the mints she gave us kids during church, the ingredients to make the soup and so much more plus the desserts are to die for, especially the Choc o lot cake. Bought an 8" Black Forest cake a few days ago. Extremely disappointed with the quality of the cake. It was dry! It never was as fresh as it could have been. This was a birthday cake and it did not go over very well. I'm not sure if they are trying to cut costs but this cake tasted like a grocery store bakery cake. No real bing cherries. If you found any maraschino cherries in the filling, it was sparse. Come on you can do better! A vanilla cake with custard filling was also bought and this cake was great. Very moist and delicious. What a shame for the BF though; I love supporting local small business. read more
