A bakery right on 109 Street in the old Noorish location. I had never actually checked out the bakery until a family member brought these delicious cruffins to a dinner! The cruffins are filled with Boston cream-esque filing with chocolate icing and a raspberry on top. I was sold! I checked out Breadland a few times for their cruffin and tried a few other items, like the cinnamon bun, pizza flatbread and danishes. Unfortunately, I did not love any other of their baked goods, especially for the price. But the cruffin - worth it. Last time I checked it out, the cruffin was gone! They had stopped selling them, but they may come back. So TBD on the cruffin debacle. read more

The pesto spinach pizza pastry was so darn good. Sharp cheese accompanied by pesto packs a flavour punch. The pastry was buttery and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Felt like I had moisturizer on my lips after eating the thing but I do love me some grease so I wasn't at all put off by it. Lol Also picked up a loaf of the organic bread. Having only visited this location once, I have been rather impressed with the variety of organic whole grain items available as well as all the delicious varieties of sweets, savoury foods and more even rather late in the day. The staff person working at the counter was really friendly and helpful when I asked questions about the available items, and purchased my food. I really liked the fact that the staff person asked me if I wanted a receipt or not, if I wanted a bag or not, if I wanted things to stay or to go, if I wanted my bread sliced or not, and confirmed precisely what I wanted before I bought it. Food isn't cheap here, but unlike other Edmonton specialty bakeries, the fare is pretty much universally whole grain, and the bread selection isn't completely whittled down to nothing after the end of a weekday, even though it might only be open until 6pm. Good bread and snacks are worth paying a little bit. read more

I've been trying to modify my diet to eat less processed-white-flour-devoid-of-nutrients bread, so I was thrilled to discover Breadland close to home. They are located in Oliver Square West, next to the Second Cup, KVP, and London Drugs. They have a wide variety of organic loaves of breade baked fresh every day, including spelt grain, sprouted, multi seed, pumpernickel (haven't been there early enough to see it yet), challah, yeast-less, and my new favourite, kamut bread. Even my husband who dislikes whole wheat bread loves it. My understanding is that everything is made with a sourdough starter so everything I've tried has a faint sourdough taste, which I love. On Thursdays they take out loaves that were frozen immediately after baking, so that they are just like freshly-baked loaves, and sell them for a discount. I happened to be there on a Thursday and the kamut loaf I bought was just as good as any other day. They are open non-traditional bakery hours (until 5pm Saturdays for example, when I'd expect it to close earlier, but opens at 9am every day with the exception of being closed on Sundays - I always thought bakeries were open super early?) and there are usually 4-5 types of loaves left when I pop by at the end of the day. If you get a chance to go there on Saturday, be sure to pick up a fresh baguette! Even if it's not Saturday, they are still great - I was there on Monday once and they had baguettes leftover from Saturday on sale, and they were still so soft and fresh that I had to buy one. Delicious. They also have other ready-to-eat goodies like pizza and croissants. The croissant I had was flaky and buttery (and large!) though a little dried out, but that was my fault for eating it the next day. There is a small dine-in area of about 3 tables. They do take credit cards. They are a little more expensive than I'd like it to be but I'm paying for quality, and when I think about it, it's not much more than what I'd pay for a loaf of Wonderbread but this is much, much better. What appears like a cute local bakery with great sourdough bread and sweet pastries turned out to be a bit of a shock when I actually sat down for my lunch break. Going off the recommendation from a friend, who usually gets his, admittedly excellent, bread from here, I decided to give Breadland a shot myself. I was almost immediately put off by the strong Christian imagery of the music playing when I entered. I assumed it was just one song playing on the radio, but the station just kept going. Everyone is free to enjoy their beliefs, but it feels very intense to jam something this in people's faces in such a fashion, especially considering the widespread presence of LGBT+ positive spaces surrounding Breadland. Unfortunately, things got worse. While waiting for my order, I saw an employee, presumably the baker, walk up to the front desk cashier and show her a to-go cup with a dead mouse in it, laughing it off as if it were not a serious health concern. I decided to have my meal at the office instead. Overall, it is a shame that a cute cafe with a cute location and excellent food is tarnished by mind-bogglingly incompetent managerial decisions. Take the extra five minutes to go to a cafe on Whyte avenue instead. read more

This is the best bread bakery! They have so many options for people who choose gluten and wheat free. Everything is natural and they use organic cane sugar in all of there sweet pastries :) I'm so happy to have this spot in Edmonton and continue to visit multiple times a week to stock up on cinnamon buns/croissants/loaves, etc! I like their bread and their offerings of spelt, sprouted grain and rye. The service is very friendly. But I gotta say, twice I have purchased day-old items (with cheese and spinach) and twice I have gotten sick. These items are kept on the countertop when really by food-safe standards they should be refrigerated. They are quite buttery as well, and given Breadland products are organic with no preservatives, the chance of a bad pathogen taking hold is higher. I don't get sick from food often, so def a bad sign. Avoid the day-old pastries, don't make the mistake I made (twice!). Urgh. read more

I love Breadland - it's one of those places where you walk in and you feel like the owner is really a part of the business, like it's their home. The selection is decent - lots of beautiful fresh breads made with natural, "homemade" sourdough and everything is baked right there in the bakery. The bread itself, no matter what kind you buy, is the beautiful artisan kind - crispy and chewy and perfectly done. Breadland also offers a few different kinds of pastries, cinnamon buns, chocolate croissants and etc. They are big on whole-grain, unbleached flour and there is lots to choose from in the gluten-free, rice based breads, as well as breads that have yummy natural ingredients like spelt and various seeds. The prices are a little high, which I feel is worth it for the quality of bread, but it's still daunting to pay $10 for two loaves. The bakery also sells coffee and beverages, and features a little sit-in area if you feel like staying. read more

I've only visited the Breadland Organic Whole Grain Bakery (breathes) to buy gluten-free bread. I was told by a girl that cut my hair that they have the best gluten-free bread and buns she has ever tasted. She said they were so good, that she ate six buns in a row. I was excited, when I heard this, because Kinnikinnick's bread is not very good. It's like eating bricks, and it took me years to get used to it; not to mention, it only really tastes good when it's toasted. I've tried Breadland's arrowroot gluten-free buns. These are indeed very good. They are very soft and the outside is chewy, and they taste great with just about anything: butter, hummus, melted cheese, or peanut butter & jam. The only problem is that I can't eat them, because they give me really bad eczema on my face. I suspect it's all the yeast they put in it. The focaccia gluten-free bread they sell is also really good. This is like a thick flat bread that is flavoured with tons of herbs and I think some garlic too. It's so good, and although it contains yeast, I don't get eczema, so it must not be that much. These breads are very expensive though, so I only get them as a treat. read more

I happened upon this little bakery in Oliver while waiting to meet with someone over at the McDonald's and decided to pop in to see if they had hamburger buns in an attempt to save myself a trip over to Safeway. I got service immediately and was greeted by a very enthusiastic young woman. I did end up up purchasing a package based solely on the fact they smelt so darn good but was slightly shocked at the price. They are smaller than your typical grocery chain buns but the price jump obviously comes from the fact they are organic. Upon using them with our burgers however I was quite surprised with how much better they tasted then the prior mentioned grocery store chain buns so I must admit I am torn about my experience. If value and quantity is what is important to you then I recommend sticking with the big grocery stores but if you want something high quality and healthy and can handle paying a bit more these guys are a great choice. I will definitely come back for a coffee and individual baked good if I am in the neighborhood again but I don't think my wallet could handle regular purchases here. read more

I've spent the past three years poking my head into bakeries around town, hoping to find someplace that makes german rye bread with caraway seeds. I've often been told they don't make it, or that it's sold out, or that it's on the baking schedule for one weekend a month. I had almost given up when I decided to check out Breadland. I was at the registry, anyway, so why not? I didn't even look at everything they offered. I immediately asked the salesperson if their rye contained caraway, and she answered in the affirmative. I purchased a $5 loaf, squeeing all the while about having finally found real rye bread in Edmonton. I'm pretty sure the woman thought I was crazy. And the best news is that they make it every day. As soon as I got out the door, I had to gnaw off a piece to make sure it was true. IT WAS! Once my excitement had passed and I was able to evaluate the bread in an objective fashion, I decided it needed more caraway seeds. Otherwise, it was pretty damn good. Upon arriving home, hubs was really excited, too. We consumed the entire loaf in one evening. read more

A couple weeks ago I noticed this little bakery besides the Second Cup in Oliver, but it hadn't opened for the day. By luck today I drove by before class, and Breadland had opened so I popped in. The lady at the counter said it would be about 20 minutes for the rest of the bread to be ready. I wasn't looking for an entire loaf, just a little snack and coffee, which they had. The coffee was good, just a standard drip coffee - I did see there were several types of loose tea to. The dessert I had was quite yummy - like a big layered cookie with jam and covered in chocolate and dried coconut sprinkles. Yelpers I wish I could tell you what it was called, but I've totally forgotten. I think it started the a sch or a sche - either way it was good. Nice little bakery. I was most impressed with the service and attention I got when I shopped here. It was an unplanned visit - actually I hadn't really noticed it before and had some time so decided to check it out. I was very impressed that their food is also made without soy! This is becoming an increasingly intense issue for me because; 1. my allergy has worsened, 2. they've started putting soy in baked goods - even the grocery stores with bakeries right inside! I had a chocolate croissant which was awesome because it's extremely rare to find chocolate made without soy (which really gets on my nerves!!!). They also had some kind of marble bread on special that had a swirl of chocolate running through it. Very tempting indeed, but I resisted because I simply couldn't afford it. I am so disappointed that I feel I need to leave a negative review as I really do love this bakery and they have amazing products. I stopped in last Friday to grab my favourite Ham & Gruyere pastry but was turned away at the counter for not having a mask, whilst the entire room around me was full of people dining maskless and the provincial mandates had been dropped. After explaining I have an exemption, the staff member still refused to serve me. Not only was I disappointed, but I felt incredibly humiliated as it was my first time having this experience. After I left, I called the store to speak to the manager. I spoke with one of the staff who was incredibly lovely and assured me she would have the manager contact me as I had some questions about their policies. It is now Tuesday of the following week and have yet to hear from them. I have been a big fan of this bakery for many years now and have been recommending them to friends and family when they visit the city. I know this is such a weird time we are going through and we are all doing our best, but being turned away and then having no follow up has left me incredibly disappointed in their customer service. This is not your supermarket type bread store. At Breadland, you actually are purchasing bread made from 'scratch' with wholesome and natural ingredients and the products are made by very qualified and experienced bakers. They generally use 'organic' ingredients and tend towards staple ingredients such as spelt and use real 'sourdough'. I love the baguettes which are only made one day a week; Saturday. The baguette is lovely, it is chewy and has a taste reminiscent of the breads that I purchased in Europe. As well, their seeded bread loaf is awesome, it toasts beautifully and leaves you full. And lastly, the white bread is terrific on it's own or used in a grill cheese sandwich: just the best. Downside of Breadland - the bread and baked goodies are really expensive but I don't mind paying the price as I find that I am getting quality that is just not found in the so-called bakeries of grocery stores such as Safeway, Sobey's, Save-on, etc. As well, many times my bread of choice is not available because it was sold out or you need to come back in a couple of hours....which I won't since I don't live close by. The staff here have little personality but it is likely due to the outrageous hours that a baker lives by and they need a good sleep to enliven their demeanour. read more

This bakery is new to Oliver Square area, and already this place is extremely popular. The bread they bake here is made of spelt and kamut flour, which I never knew about before visiting this bakery. The person who assisted me, explained a lot about the organic ingredients used during the bread making process, and their health benefits. I am not allergic to soy and gluten, but I am always interested in trying additives-free and organic bread. I bought a pampernickel, a baguette and a loaf of rye bread which the gentleman at the counter offered to slice for me. Each was priced at around $5. Seems like a lot but once I got home and tasted what I bought, I realized that the price tag reflects the amazing quality. No wonder Breadland has royal customers! I have been going here for several years, and its time I wrote a review. I always buy the whole rye bread. Its hard to find fresh rye in Edmonton. The quality is always outstanding. I also get their whole wheat hamburger rolls, which are also excellent. The owners are very knowlegable, and skilled. They put much more whole rye flour in the bread. I also buy bread in Toronto and NY, and Breadland can match anything I buy in either of those places. read more
