Lots of locally made food is available. I like this place because it gives you an authentic taste of Vancouver and because it punches above its weight in terms of quality for the type of restaurant it is. The baked goods are sourced from reputable local bakeries. The main supplier used to be Purebread but seems to have switched to Swiss Bakery, which I was initially skeptical of because I feel like Purebread is hard to beat, but the Swiss Bakery chocolate pecan bar I got was quite good. The hot food bar (rotisserie chicken and various sides that can also be ordered on their own) is very good for pre-cooked food. The flavours are interesting and it feels like healthy food. The fresh-made sandwiches were also very good (especially the smoked salmon bagel sandwich), and the stuff from the grab-and-go fridge is probably also the best airport grab-and-go I've tried. The pizza was kind of a letdown. The crust was too dry and crispy, and the cheese was kind of oily. They used a blend of cheddar and mozzarella, and I think just mozzarella would've been better. I don't like to promote the big chains, but I think that Vino Volo has a better veggie pizza. The coffee and tea are pretty good! The coffee and chai is from Parallel 49th Roasters. I especially like the chai! The people working here are friendly most of the time. Sometimes you get a cashier who comes across as indifferent and mentally checked out. There's a decent amount of seating behind the shop area. Some of the tables have outlets. I see staff cleaning often.

I recently was very disappointed to see that the usual staff were not there...at the cashiers and was told that they are no longer working there! What a shock and after years and years of getting to know these people...suddenly they are gone. Also very irritating was the loud music. I was always confused by the previous music which had no rhyme or reason...nothing that you could even recognize but I managed to tune it out. Now it is even worse with...having to listen to "Like a Virgin" by Madona with the volume higher than before. Another small thing is that the mechanical horse and the railroad no longer operates or isn't there at all. Such a shame...the neighbourhood kids used to love it. This all may sound petty but in this day and age there are so many places to shop and I can say for myself...these two new events at Choices...staffers gone...and music issue are enough for me to stay away. Another sad loss...it is also evident at Save On foods in Kerrisdale as I am told it is owned by J. Pattison as well. So much for independent grocers.

I am over 80 years old and walking is difficult for me. I always use a cart and I usually fill it and I spent a few months training this store to keep their carts near the entrance however they have decided that about 45 minutes before the store closes they will take all the carts and put them a long ways away, so I have to walk to get them. I have mentioned this on many occasions they keep the gas the baskets for small clients right by the door until they're closed, but the people that buy larger baskets float, and that need the carts to be close at hand, have a difficulty, please solve.

That was very surprising and disappointing--especially for a major grocery store bakery. They suggested I call the next day to see if the cake might be available without a custom order. When I called, they said they did have an 8-inch Tiramisu cake available. I asked if they could hold it for me until 5 p.m., after my chiropractic appointment. However, I was told they could only hold it for one hour, and that if I didn't arrive by 1:30 p.m., they would release it. I even offered to provide a credit card number for a deposit to secure the cake, but they said they don't take credit cards for that purpose. I find it unreasonable that a customer can't place a simple cake order in advance due to being "full," and also that the store won't hold a cake for more than an hour--even when it's the same day and the store is still open. Life doesn't always allow for a rigid one-hour window, especially when you're trying to plan around other responsibilities. This experience was not what I expected from Whole Foods, and it added unnecessary stress to planning a special occasion. I hope their bakery department reconsiders their order and pickup policies to be more flexible and customer-friendly.

No idea why they moved out, but whatever. 88 has a couple of locations in Vancouver, but because I'm on the wrong side of the tracks, it's a jaunt to get those stores. They don't welcome my kind of riff raff presence either way, so here I came. Another Asian supermarket? Yes, but this one is a little different from all the other ones in Richmond. This one is more Pan Asian, instead of Chinese focussed. More so than T&T. Got be diverse, no? Malaysian Filipino Vietnamese Chinese Were the samplings I ascertained. I noticed that they have untrimmed beef flank. Not too many places sell this. The store is relatively new. There's a parking lot in the back that can get a bit crazy and busy. Rice World up the street has a crazier parking experience. It may get like this here too one day. I saw some very low prices on poultry. There's a hot food section for take out. This place reminds me a lot of Chong Lee Market in East Van So far so good. I think I'm coming back.

From Herban Farm in Pike Place, I got their Pike Place Herbs. When I was in Budapest, I went to the Great Market Hall and got two paprika tins and a taco seasoning blend from the spice shop there. So while doing a lap around Granville Island Public Market and seeing a spice stall with a huge variety of salts and spices, I had to stop by. And I had to restrain myself given how much bag space I had left. Jean-Pierre Coté will warmly greet you as you approach, giving you a rundown of what he has. All of the salts and spice blends are handmade, and the packaging is top notch, featuring the ingredients, a tasting note, and then recommendations on what to cook. They all come in a variety of sizes, from the small 28 gram tins, 50 gram sqaures, to 100 gram bags, 250 gram bags. It will take you some time to consider what you want, and I highly recommend you keep talking with Jean-Pierre about his selection. I was looking for blends I couldn't get anywhere else, and the ones he pointed out were: Turmeric saffron sea salt - hard to miss the bright yellow salt, which he points out you should add a pinch to your rice to really bring out a nice, Mediterranean flavor. I've done so, and it really does change up the flavor profile. English Garden salt seasoning - you most likely will pick up this mix of pink and purples and wonder what is in there. You really need to read this fascinating mix of ingredients featuring vanilla, potatoes, blueberries and a whole lot more, which he points out is amazing on everything from salads to tempura! Egyptian Style Seasoning - This spice blend really stole the show for me. I'm a big fan of cumin, but the hazelnut, coriander, mint and more really stands out. I was so exited by this once I made it home I found a great instant pot recipe for Egyptian lamb stew and I used this as the seasoning. WOW! I was eating it for 3 days (it was a big recipe), but the flavors did not disappoint. If you live in Vancouver or just visiting and love food, or know someone who does, I cannot recommend Maison Cote enough. You are sure to wow yourself or a loved one with one of his blends.
