Inside were quirky people, talking about all kids of books and their favorite authors, who you could tell spent more time reading than interacting. Then I remember that was me... The have three separate chambers walled floor to ceiling with books of every genre. All the books are used paperback, which is more than awesome--they're creased and vintage, perfect for the bookshelf. They have an entire wall of Star Trek and Star Wars books; they have all of Tolkien's books (a major plus); and thousands of other. The place isn't big, but they pack in the books. And the prices are reduculously cheap: $3.00 for Lord of the Rings! Easy five stars here. Although on most occasions they have two to three books in a series and not all of them, and sometimes only carry one of an author. Otherwise, this is the coolest book shop in town. P.S. they don't take credit/debit cards so bring cash.

We were the only people in here on a Saturday afternoon. The owner was intently studying a real estate brochure at the front counter and actually squealed in surprise when we approached her with a book to buy. You get the impression from her reaction and from the boxes and piles of books everywhere that most people come here strictly to trade, sending the owner into an oppressive cycle of never turning a profit or making any space. It might explain the amusing notes scattered throughout the store: "Classics exchanged for classics only!" "No restroom - don't ask!", and my favorite, "Don't touch the light switch!" She seemed positively thrilled with our $3.50 purchase (maybe to run along to the brewery as soon as we left?).

Or if you just love visiting coffee shops, the coffee would be worth it! They have several little tables and chairs around where you can perch to do some work. [Out-of-Towner Review]…read more The name had me swooning before I even arrived. This independent bookstore is nestled in a non-descript shopping center with a variety of restaurants and shops. As I pulled into the parking lot, I didn't have many expectations. However, when I walked through the door, I was quickly proven incorrect! TYB is a cute, quaint bookstore that is filled with a great amount of books by genre and for a variety of readers. The staffer that was there was extremely helpful and happy to share some ideas for the book for me to purchase. I was in need of a book for my work travel, since I'd accidentally read my book too fast and did not bring up a backup book (rookie mistake). I perused the romance section, new releases, sale section, staff picks, and every nook and cranny of the bookstore. I finally settled on a new release, which was actually a signed copy -- bonus for me! I also snagged a really cute book for me (soon to be) nephew, as I've been building out his library as I've been building out mine with my independent book store visits! Overall, this is a great store for Birmingham, as they don't have a huge local bookstore options. If I'm back in the area, I'll definitely stop by and grab a book...or three! Half of my cosmology books came from this great little place. The owner keeps Times magazine from past years to let you see what was going on in the world when you were born. Each table is set in a different theme/era, and the music is set by the time (7pm is the 1970s). He takes requests at times. This place has a great atmosphere and is very open to all types of people. It is great to unwind and play borrowed board games and it is great to study quietly in the back. Best place to get away when you're studying.

You will go there once and return a few weeks later and it will look like a whole different store, which makes things difficult to locate. They also change what amount of a genre they have frequently. I use to come and they had DOZENS of classics in the penguin classic model. They would all be the little black penguin paper back, all together in one place. But now there are barely any classic novels on the shelves, and they no longer offer a large selection of the paperback penguin classics. They're all cloth bound, hardback, or leather. Which is pretty, but not super concert if you're not looking to drop 30-40 dollars on a book. They have a ton of YA books to choose from, but I rarely see many people wandering that aisle, it's usually the classic aisle that I see more people I have to squeeze through. Another issue is that the workers can get kind of annoying. I know they're just doing their job, and if they don't then they will probably get fired, but sometimes I will no joke have workers seeming to follow me throughout the store. One minute you're looking at Brontë and the next someone pops up, "Finding everything alright?". I get it, they can't help it but it gets a little strange. I was once in the section near the register looking at some of the Smithsonian books, and a worker was just lurking. Not stocking shelves, not arranging anything, just lurking. I had no idea why. She didn't even ask me anything, she was just watching me like a hawk. Surely she could trust I wouldn't steal anything-- those Smithsonian books weigh a ton! It was kind of creepy. This really is a good B&N though, only critique is the weird rearranging and harassment.
