Been coming here for 3 years now, and the new owners are absolutely fantastic. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. Owners are very hospitable and helpful and kind. My family and I have also gone kayaking a few times while there, and the kayaks are all in great shape, the routes are well marked (I know they dealt with a lot of fallen trees this year but it's all been cleaned up). But, the kayaking from this location is the best IMO. Every other guest I've met here is also super nice and affable, so they seem to attract great people to stay here. Amazing rooms with clean, comfortable beds, each with their own full bath. A few yards from the river or a block from downtown, it just doesn't get better than this. We loved the staff, and it's always comfortable just hanging out around the property. Today was a day my family will never forget. Mark and Cheri and all of their staff were so incredibly helpful and accommodating. They helped us make my dad's dream of canoeing down the AuSable a reality. I can't thank them enough. Growing up, we had a cabin and property near Stephan Bridge. My brother and I spent our summers up here, I went down the AuSable for the first time when I was 6 months old. Our childhoods were literally spent on this river. The forest fire in 1990 completely destroyed our land and cabin, and my parents found another place to retire to on the sunrise shore. But Dad always pined for Grayling, because of the river. My dad's health has declined in recent years, but not his love of the river. For the last 5+ years he has said that he wanted to go down the AuSable again. Today, with a series of unexpected events and a little bit of luck, my brother and I were able to make this happen. But this only happened with the kindness and expertise from the fine folks at Borchers. They helped us safely get dad in the canoe, and made sure they were at the landing early to help us out of the water. I will forever have this incredible memory, and Borchers will forever have a loyal client. Choose Borchers! They care!! read more

WOW!!! Double WOW!!! Excellent, excellent experience. My wife and I had never visited the Upper Peninsula of Michigan before and decided to take a kayak trip down the Ausable River. There are several kayak & canoe rental locations in Grayling Michigan but we chose Borchers. We decided to take the 2 1/2 hour kayak journey and it was one of the best experiences we have had in a very long time! The entire staff was incredibly friendly that they absolutely set the bar for others to follow. We would highly recommend the journey. Bring a picnic basket and have lunch along the gorgeous river or do as we did and ate at one of the picnic tables near the office after we go back! read more

The pictures are from canoeing, but we spent the night with Borchers as well....and we chose wisely. This is a very well run, tidy, and personal B&B. You won't be disappointed with your stay here. Breakfast was very good as well. They also do a nice job with the whole Covid cleanliness deal, although we don't go too overboard with it ourselves. We did the 18-mile canoe trip as well and we loved it. We will be back some day and we would only stay here and rent equipment from here. read more

To the owner, I just wanted to reply to your comment about your guest mentioning allergies or special food request. Just so you know I asked the young man that checked me in about breakfast and he stated that it's always french toast and fruit, it's standard here, therefore it left me with no choice but to accept what was being served. I read other reviews and he was pretty much accurate in his observation on breakfast. Not trying to say anything bad, the reviews that I do are based on transparency and facts...i like to make sure I do my part in being as accurate as possible and take full accountability if I make a mistake. read more

My wife and I did a 2 1/2 hour canoe trip with the Borchers. We couldn't have been more pleased. The staff was very friendly and explained the river and what to watch for. They make a point to be at the pick-up location 15 minutes before you arrive and as we paddled up, they were there to meet us. They also operate a bed and breakfast and if the canoe and kayak livery is any indication, I'd recommend staying there as well. Nice people! read more

Four of us were vacationing in Northern Michigan and thought it would be fun to go on a canoe trip. We picked Borchers because of their reviews and we're not disappointed. The owner Ryan greeted us as we arrived and made us feel welcome. One of his crew, Devin, got us set up in two canoes and briefed us on the river, potential places to stop and picnic and spots to avoid. The river is beautiful, winding through the Grayling countryside. Our canoeing skills were a bit rusty, and we decided to stop after the first picnic spot. A quick phone call arranged that, and we were soon picked up at that spot. We will definitely come back to Borchers next time we're in the area! read more

Very pleasant staff. We arrived and rented three canoes for the 2.5 hour trip. It's been a long time since we have canoed but it came back quickly. Staff members reviewed landmarks and assisted everyone into their canoes. Staff were waiting at the pickup spot when we arrived. Great trip. Professional staff and good customer service. We love Borcher's - have for years. Once again, they have outdone themselves. We reserved online; got there in time; called from the car; and went on in. Everyone has a mask on; bathrooms are clean - not outhouses; and the staff is really nice and helpful. This is a great establishment. Close enough to Metro Detroit to avoid spending your weekend driving the entire time. The hosts are gracious and sincere, and the food is great. The price makes a fun game experience a good deal. The canoe "wranglers" are polite helpful and patient. Kayaking on the Au Sable is a wonderful experience, but my group has also enjoyed Borchers hospitality during winter adventures too. We need to book well in advance, they fill up quickly. read more

This is a great place to stay if you're into canoeing or kayaking as it's right on the AuSable River and has a canoe/kayak livery on the grounds. Small six-room inn (2 rooms with private bath, 4 with shared bath) with a very friendly staff and great full breakfasts each morning. A lovely common room, wrap around porch and large yard offer lots of places to simply hang out or chill with friends after a day on the water. Opened in 1936 as a livery by the Borchers, adding the B&B in subsequent years, the place remains a family-owned and operated business after more than 75 years. Current owners, the Hunters, bought the place in the early 1990s. The inn is open year round and looks like a nice place to stay if you're headed to the Grayling area for winter as well (it's quite near Hartwick Pines and a number of other parks and forests for winter sports as well as warmer weather fun). Borchers really emphasizes providing a family-friendly and fun atmosphere for the livery, so they make sure everyone knows about river safety and responsibility. They are also very good about assisting those who need help getting into their boats and working with beginning canoeists and kayakers. The driver from Borchers literally arrived at the pick-up point within minutes of our arrival there, cheerfully took our picture when asked, loaded our boat onto the trailer and got us back to the starting point in less than a half hour's time. I'd love to visit during the winter and stay at the inn to try some cross-country skiing and winter photography in the area. Nice strong WiFi signal at the inn that made hooking up to my computer to listen to a playoff hockey game no problem. read more

This weekend, like every other weekend in the past, we were spoiled with the absolute BEST breakfast...which included DELICIOUS French toast, and Cheri's cherry crisp. Super happy they had cereal and milk for our daughter, super convenient. There's nothing but positive things to say about this family friendly, warm and cozy, home away from home B&B. Our family booked an 8 mile kayak trip with Borchers Livery on July 6, 2018 at 11:30a.m. We were very impressed with the level of professionalism from everyone on their staff from management down. We were treated with courtesy and friendliness from the begining when we paid to the pick-up down river. And there it became more apparent how professional their team is and was. A lot of others were coming out of the water at this 8 mile point. Sort of a mass exodus if you will. While employees from the other livery was literally THROWING kayaks, oars, canoes, and floatation devices off to the side to get their own equipment out and loaded. All while we were still in the direct area I might add. Borchers staff had arrived to pick us up a little behind schedule. Bit hey, things happen. Completely understandable. Borchers staff remained calm and offered direction, remained calm, and were loading their equipment up safely araound us and the other customers there standing by. The unprofessional example displayed by the other staff has sold me on ALWAYS going to Borchers in the future. I won't ever consider the other livery PERIOD! Their behavior was unsafe, unsatisfactory, and uncalled for. read more

We had a total of six kayaks and three of our own for our first family reunion at our River House here in Grayling. We decided to take our family kayaking as one of our adventures for the weekend. The staff at Borchers were amazing, they helped everyone in their vessels and worked with us on a pick up point since we did live on the river. This is a great, professionally staffed, and well-run livery. We rented two Jackson Riviera kayaks for the 4 hour trip down the Au Sable and were impressed from the get-go. The pre-trip orientation was clear and gave us all the necessary info; this livery takes seriously its obligation to keep wild drunks off the river. The Rivvies were nimble w/o being tipsy, and much more comfortable than either the sit-in beast or the skittish sit-on kayaks we rented on the Pere Marquette last year. Staff are very courteous and polite, and help you into and out of your craft, as well as the livery van. Facilities are clean and allow you to change and clean up a bit afterwards w/o having to rough it. The trip itself is a pretty tame one, but full of tricks requiring you to be alert nevertheless. Afterwards, we chatted w/ the owners and were glad to tip the "kids" handling the kayaks and us customers for their good work. Highest recommendation and the best MI river livery out of the several we've used over the years to date. read more

Staying at B&B for two nights in Canoe room. Two double beds, clean as a whistle with a window ac if it heats up. An open window with street traffic is okay with me. In room shower, toilet and sink. Beds are comfortable and cheerily decorated with pillows that sport fish buttons. Too cute! Staff is friendly and gracious. Breakfast will allow for 7am hook up with Kirkland warbler presentation at Hartwick Pines Park 15 minutes away. Canoes for rent on site. World class fly fishing area. Glad we are here. Free web access. Tv too. Bring your own shampoo tho. Lovely porch to sit and watch the water go by. Owners accommodate the schedule of the patrons, whether fly fishing or birding. read more
