This is also Emy's Yarns! I found them on Google Maps while searching for places to buy yarn besides the bigger hobby stores. This is my new go-to! They have a wide variety of yarns from acrylic to nylon to merino, even novelty! They also have accessories such as buttons, among many others. Definitely check their great leather products out as well! As soon as I entered the shop, I was greeted by a sweet gentleman who then called his equally sweet wife to help me out with selecting yarns for a project. I could have definitely spent so much more, but I paid less than 50 for 6 or 7 skeins of yarn! Granted I didn't opt for the higher end kinds as I am just beginning again after years and years. I'm so glad that I found them, and I would not even think about going elsewhere. It's a crafter's paradise with a very homey feel. This place is amazing! You know that feeling of living somewhere your entire life and not knowing somewhere totally amazing exists? That feeling of discovery and excitement when you finally do come across it? I've passed by this building dozens of times and never gone in. It's a very unassuming building you wouldn't imagine the treasure trove that lies inside. I wasn't sure what to expect but as soon as I opened the door I was in heaven! I was immediately greeted and given a tour of the shop. They have nearly every brand of hand dyed yarn as well as some more classic brand names. None of that cheap stuff only the best of the best. All the staff was extremely friendly and cheap and if you sign up for their newsletter you can even get coupons! I bought so much yarn it was hard to walk away without buying even more. So I'll be out approximately $50 because I trusted the smooth talking "Mike". They'll promise you the moon before they get paid, but once they have your money, look out! Also, they go by LeatherTownUSA.com online even though their products are made in Mexico. If you're familiar with the cost of leather goods in Mexico, you'll see that LeatherTownUSA (Border Leather Corp) have about a 100% plus mark up on their products. These are the kindest people on the planet! I came for the Annual Yarn Crawl and came away with a basket full of yummy Noro yarn, cute patterns and swag- a pin, patterns, and . The owners are always onsite and so generous with hourly giveaways, and knitting tips. They always go all out with the decor too -this year they have a yarn license plate display frame to get your yarn crawl selfie. The store has garlands of yarn cupcakes and ice-cream cones hanging from the ceiling. There is always plenty of parking on the curb out front or in back. read more

Despite what other reviews may suggest, this store stocks a variety of leather and leather working supplies and NOT just yarn. I was attended to by Myer, a long-time employee. He answered all my amateur questions and provided great insight. This store has been in business for as long as Tandy as been in the area, if not longer. Today, Thursday, March 9, 2023, World renowned knitter, Jody Long, brought his trunk show to Emy's Yarns (inside Border Leather) 619-691-1657. What a wonderful day. I say "day" because it was listed as 10-12 but Mr. Long stayed way past the time and spoke with everyone. He is charming, very creative, and willing to share his unique ideas and knitting tricks with anyone who asks for information. Gloria and her husband provided a thoughtful buffet of sandwiches, fruit and veggies. Gloria and her staff take very good care of each customer who comes into the shop. The shop has all different prices of yarns and a large selection of yarns. There are completed projects displayed (that make you forget the pattern you brought in to search for yarns!!) and the staff can answer any questions you have if you get stuck on a pattern. Want honesty? Come here! I went in looking for a kit to learn how to do rivets. Unfortunately, they didn't have it. But as soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a very nice lady. She told me what section of the store to look at. Then a really nice, knowledgeable man recommended I go to Tandy Leather. What business does that?! Honest folks, that's who. He described to me what tools I would need, showed me different types of rivets and studs. 10 out of 10 for overall helpfulness. If you crochet, knit or already work with leather, come here! A whole wall of Malabrigo in different weights and colors They also carry an excellent variety of high quality needles (lots of Addi Rockets) and lots of notions and tools to assist all of your fiber projects. The leather selection is amazing. Remnants, small to large pieces in all kinds of gorgeous colors and full hides at very reasonable prices. I visited the yarn store portion as part of the San Diego Yarn Crawl 2014. Everyone was super friendly the moment I walked into the store. I was asked if I needed help finding something within the first few minutes of browsing. Great customer service! There's tons of yarn here and lots of variety from price to fiber to colors. I went into the second room where they had setup their Yarn Crawl tables and got a free little leather coin purse, stitch markers, and my choice of a knit or crochet pattern. I was there on the hour so I was entered into their hourly raffle. I ended up buying the Alpaca Yarn Company's Passi Shawl kit in a coral gradient. The accompanying pattern is very lovely and so are the colors! The gentlemen who handled the cash register also gave me a pretty leather heart keychain. Way better than the lame buttons other yarn shops were giving out. I also got a 15% off coupon for my next visit. I work in the area so I'll definitely be back and look around more in the leather and other yarn section (got sidetracked during this visit half way through the yarn area). read more

It doesn't get any better than this combination yarn and leather hide shop. They have so many different types of yarn from all over the world, at reasonable prices. A good majority of their leather hides are at $5 a sq ft. You probably can't beat that price anywhere around SD. I bought a leather hide, which is what initially brought me to this store. I've been traveling over 30 miles (one way) to take classes here. The people in the crochet class are wonderful ladies who are helpful with suggestions unrelated to crocheting (smiles). They have free coffee for the students. If you buy the yarn at their store the class is free! Luz, the crocheting teacher is patient and gets around to everyone who asks for assistance. Some of these ladies go there to crochet and socialize with other friends who also crochet. I've met and talked with the knitting teacher, Laura, who is very experienced at teaching as well as patient. I even got to meet and know a man who travels from Rosarito, Mexico to take knitting classes. I can't wait to finish my crocheting project so that I can dive in on knitting! I definitely recommend this shop, don't let hateful Yelp comments ruin your chance to have some fun, meet some nice people and learn how to crochet/knit. ;-) read more

Best place for yarn, EVER ! After visiting this place you will see how cheap and nasty Michael's and Walmart's selection of yarn is. Sure it's not 2.95 for a skien, but it's reasonable, and the variety of yarn is endless. The people there are friendly and love to help you should you have any questions. This store is fantastic! Everyone was really helpful, but also gave us plenty of space and time to just wander and look at everything. So many amazing yarn choices, and every needle and notion you could want. They had gorgeous knitting samples for inspiration and patterns to go with so many of the options. this is really a yarn shop. When I walked in there were a dozen ladies kibitzing over their knitting circle. No one looked up or offered to help, or said hello. They have some junky ready made leather belts that look as cheap as anything you'd buy from a vendor at the San Ysidro border crossing. They have plenty of yarns and knitting equipment for sale. I'd never return for anything leather from this outfit. Parking is tough in this neighborhood. I'd skip this joint. read more

Wow...I know this is a yarn/fabric store...but I left wanting to write a review so grand that it would garner ROTD status just to get the word out about this place. THAT GOOD! Back story: My dear little Zoey....the sweetest, most lovable, kiss friendly dog you will ever meet....LOVES to eat couches. I don't even think Cesar Millan could break her of this habit. So after going to Jo-Ann Fabrics and a handful of other stores nearby I got referred to UFO to find a match for the ivory leather I was in search of. They did not have a suitable match and referred me to another place nearby. ....BORDER Upon entering Border I was blown away but the amount a yarn selection that they had as well as accessories for knitting and that sort of stuff...I am no expert but it seemed impressive. I then went to the back area (where the fabric is) and was greeted by a small army of Tias knitting and eating at tables...WHOA....I guess they do this every weekend. They were all very nice and INSISTED I not leave until I made myself a plate and took some cookies with me...they didn't have to insist twice. Holy crap that food was good...but back to the review. One lady helping me took me to the leather remnants area where we sat and dug through piles of pieces. While I didn't find an exact match...I did get close enough where the difference wouldn't be instantly recognizable...especially on the side of cushions. They also have a HUGE selection of fabric by the foot/yard, but the remnants worked better for my purpose. I paid $20 (the lady included tax for me) for 2 pounds (they can charge by weight on remnants) of some damn good real leather. SCORE! Will be back for sure to get any fabric I need...and will make sure to go on a Saturday to get lunch as well! read more

I am not basing my review on the leather products this store sells but actually just the yarn selection they have in the store. WOW! There are yarns from all over the place, Italy, England, etc. There is just so much yarn to look at, it's like being a kid in a candy store. They also carry several varieties of yarn, such as bamboo, organic, alpaca, mohair, angora, you name it, they have it. Great selection and very nice and helpful staff. It was love at first sight! I had no idea there was a LYS in Chula Vista! The people were super helpful and gave some great tips and advice about the yarns, how much to get, etc. I love the selection of different kinds of yarn! And there are lots of knit and crocheted pieces displayed all over the place for which they offer free patterns with the purchase of the yarns they used to make those pieces. I could spend all day in there; I felt like a kid in a candy store! We bought our yarn, got the free patterns, and then we were given some freebies: a retractable tape measure, yarn markers, and a coin purse that I'll probably use to put said yarn markers in. All in all, it was a great experience, and I will be sure to come back any time I'm in town. Oh, and they ship also, so if there is any yarn I want, I can let them know and they'll ship it. In the back, they have some discount yarns, a couple of huge tables where a few people were learning how to knit, and an entire section of leather goods (hats, bags, etc.). I guess that's the "leather" in their name. If I lived locally, I'd definitely look into knitting/crocheting classes to learn new techniques and to meet other knitting and crocheting enthusiasts. read more

This store closes at 5pm; so I made a special trip to this store and got there at 4:40pm and the sign said "Open", but the door was locked. I saw someone inside, I knocked on the door and no one opened. Horrible customer service. They should've at least flipped the sign so customers don't have to get off the car on a rainy windy day just to find out the store closed early for no apparent reason. I think it's time for me to start looking for another leather store. This seriously gets me upset, what a waste of time. I would strongly suggest customers to stay away from theses type of unpredictable low customer service stores who don't even open the door during business hours to explain why they were closed. I don't usually give bad reviews but this got me upset bc it was a special trip on a rainy day. read more

Novelty yarns are so difficult to find these days and Border Leather is the only place I have found that offers a huge selection of such yarns and in excellent quality. The range of colors, textures and varied designs of yarns is surpassed by none other. I always find what I'm looking for, no matter how unique my designs may be at the moment. It's definitely worth the few miles to Chula Vista for yarns that complete my projects in beautiful colors and fibers. Also, if you don't see what you're looking for, just ask. I've lived in Chula Vista for a LONG time and have seen Border for years. I've never really felt the need to go in until I learned to Knit & Crochet. After failed attempts to find a decent place to get fabric and yarn in San Diego that wasn't a Wal-Mart or Micheal's, I remembered this store! Oh... Let me tell you, this is like a crafter's heaven. This place is BUSTING with merch. If you don't find it here, you're not looking hard enough! When I walked in I was kind of taken back by the shear volume of product in here. I came to this place out of desperation and the review by Melissa... One word - AMAZING!!! I have lived in CV for over 21 years and always go elsewhere in the County for my yarns... NOT ANYMORE - this store is a wonderful addition to the crafters in the area. The selection of yarns and hooks/needles is exceedingly good. and prices are reasonable. Did I say they offer a 15% discount? The décor is utilitarian yet functional. The true charm is the people! It was an usual Saturday - I counted 52 folks at this place! Have Cathy, the co-owner with her husband and her beautiful story of why the store exists. Her smile warms up a room! Her husband is as welcoming and charming. Then come the volunteer teachers - these ladies are fantastic. There is no charge for the classes - just buy the material, find a space, and they are there for you. Then all the students yearning to learn that new stitch to ensure their project is sheer perfection and hand-made - a snapshot of their heart. I was greeted by wonderful people, invited at the table to share not only a plate of food but also camaraderie, was bid adieu by at least 30 girls and left wanting more.
