I've visited Yarn and Thread Expressions three times now and every visit has been genuinely wonderful. The shop isn't open every day, and while part of me wishes it were, it actually makes catching it open feel like a treat. It turns a simple supply run into something I look forward to. My first visit was just to browse. I picked up a few skeins from the discontinued/orphan bin and some fun extras for a crocheter friend. The selection immediately stood out -- this isn't big-box store yarn. The fibers are higher quality and much more enjoyable to work with. On my second visit I purchased a beautiful wool/alpaca blend hank for fingerless gloves. Carol balled the yarn for me and then taught me how to split it into two equal balls for my project. The concept honestly confused me at first, but she explained that you divide by weight rather than yardage -- and suddenly it clicked. One of those "aha" moments you remember later. Shortly after, I returned for two more hanks of the same yarn. Carol again walked me through using the swift and ball winder. I even sat at the big studio table ripping out a glove... twice... while she patiently taught two young students to crochet. Watching her explain foundation chains and rows made it clear she isn't just a shop owner -- she's a gifted teacher. Most recently, I brought in gloves I was struggling to finish. She patiently explained the construction in a way my brain could actually process and showed me an alternate method that achieved the same result but was much easier to understand. That kind of support is priceless. Carol consistently shows kindness, patience, and deep knowledge of fiber arts. The shop also carries a huge variety of patterns for knitters and crocheters at every skill level. Parking can feel confusing the first time, but it's easy once you know: there's a lot behind the building -- enter via the driveway to the left of the neighboring house -- plus plenty of street parking. As long as the shop is open, I'll keep coming back. This place feels less like a store and more like a fiber community. read more

I'd give them 5 stars except I have come by several times when they are supposedly "open" and the door was locked. I was working on a blanket and ran out of a color with only 2 rows to go. I searched the big 3 craft stores and had no luck. This shop was my last hope and sure enough they had a matching color and weight. It was a little pricy for the small ball of yarn but what ya gonna do when you've almost completed a project. I decided to scratch off a bucket list item, knitting a sweater from an intermediate level pattern. Checked out a few places before wandering in to Carol Fuller's shop. Carol helped me find a pattern, choose an alternate yarn to the one suggested and here I am a few weeks later. She has tutored me in reading and adapting the sizing to fit with my body type, learning all the intricacies of cabling, increasing/decreasing and explaining so clearly how to proceed whenever I get stuck. This has turned into a wonderful past time and my sweater project is moving along quickly. Already thinking about my next project. I was in need of bulky yarn for an upcoming online class and there are sadly no local yarn stores near me anymore. We went looking and ended up in San Diego at this cute little shop. It was so inviting and comfortable inside. There was a group chatting and working away at the table and it so made me wish I lived nearby so I could join in on weekends. Great selection of Yarn! I love that shops like this still exist. It beats going to a craft store to get cheap acrylic yarn. I used to have to drive farther north to find a good yarn store but so glad I discovered one right here in La Mesa! I am a somewhat beginner knitter, so I love that the staff is so friendly and knowledgable. I was able to come here and get a friend a gift as well as find myself some yarn. They have so many cute patterns for inspiration and even a small section of samples they sell for cheap! They had hats, shirts, scarves and other samples for really really good prices. Carol is one of the kindest people you will ever meet! She greets you with a smile and warm hello every visit. Squeeky is a joy and obviously one of the main reasons I visit...the yarn is amazing but a ear scratch for Squeeky is really all you'll ever want. Speaking of the yarn the selection is amazing! Most yarns are very budget friendly but there are some very special yarns for those projects that deserve a bit of "extra"! Carole the knitting teacher is wonderful, she's helpful, knowledgeable and most importantly PATIENT! As a crocheter who dabbles now and again in knitting, Carole was immensely helpful in navigating that strange new world. Although COVID has drastically changed the shopping and get togethers, I hope that soon we will be able to come together again and enjoy all the ear scratches and yarn shopping again. This store just opened in La Mesa after being in Lemon Grove for years. I think it is more spacious and cheery, well-lit, more room for classes and instruction. Carol is very helpful in answering questions. The selection is good and the prices are fair. There is always something on sale or clearance for the budget minded and if she doesn't have what you need or not enough of it she will order it in for you. Great prices, great yarns, great service. The employees are all like a family and collectively know pretty much everything fiber. This store definitely has some of the best prices in San Diego and offers a variety of classes as well. I wish I had time to attend, but its a bit too far out of the way for me. They are very happy to order any products they don't stock and research all sources thoroughly. They will locate the best deals for you. Came into this place looking for some special knitting needles size 50. This shop is friendly with a huge table and there were a lot of people sitting around it knitting. They have daily classes here. I felt welcomed as soon as I walked through the door first by the adorable little poodle just wanting pets and love but then by the owner. I will be coming back here. The repair was made with comprehensive knowledge of pattern and wool. And was well done. The shop features extensive selection, good lighting, large tables, and a beautiful sense of community. I finally made it over to see the new space in La Mesa. If you have ever been to the previous location in Lemon Grove this place is 10 time bigger and more amazing! Much larger table for knitting at. It is definitely more spacious and encourages poking around and wandering. Of course if you want to be in and out Carol is always willing to help. I love that this place is close to me. Parking there is a bit weird as in it seems there is no where convenient to park. There is very limited on street parking, but I pulled in behind the building and there are some parking spaces there. Not sure if they are for the shop or not, but I didn't have a problem. read more

This is a wonderful place to shop for yarn and all things knitting/crocheting. I love the format of 2 hour lessons that can be taken whenever you can drop in. Patricia is very kind and a great teacher. During your lesson, you can sit and see what others are working on and it is a friendly environment that I enjoy being in. I discovered this store fairly recently and I love it! Definitely my favorite yarn store in the San Diego area. It is big and well-stocked and just has a nice vibe. They have a wide variety of non-wool yarns, which is great because I very rarely use wool (no need in this climate!). The employees are warm and helpful without being overbearing. Last Saturday I purchased Size 10.5, 6" DPNs. Unopened, I tried to exchange them for Sz 7, 6" today, to be told they don't exchange needles, only yarn. I was willing to forego the refund on the difference. I do try to frequent local businesses but this is nonsense. Today you lost yarn sales and a customer. Lovely little store. Staff is friendly and LOVE to help! The only thing I wish they had was a bigger selection of both chunky wool yarn AND a much bigger selection for acrylic blend yarns. Crocheting eats up a lot more yarn so acrylic is more cost efficient to use and I have to order online if I want more colors but I would rather support small businesses like this one! Love this place! Didn't know it existed until their neighbor Two Sisters and Ewe went bye-bye for good. Very quaint establishment with helpful nice ladies.
